Abstract:Bamboo charcoal is one of solid products of bamboo,and its microstructure and morphology were studied by X-ray diffraction analysis(XRD),infrared microscopy(IR),scanning electronic microscopy(SEM) and EDS.The results show that bamboo charcoal was of amorphous carbon structure with some graphite crystals and could keep the original morpha of bamboo,but it showed some collapses.The high special surface area of bamboo charcoal resulted from the mini-pores on the cell wall,and the canal wall showed graphite structure with the shape of layers.The main elements of bamboo charcoal were carbon and oxygen and it also included many mineral elements,such as K,Si etc.All of the above studies are helpful the further research of functional bamboo charcoal.

Abstract:Bamboo is a natural fiber composite with layered structure. Millions of years of evolution have endowed bamboo with the most effective structure in nature. The ingenious microstructure provides bamboo with excellent mechanical properties. Bamboo culm is composed of the cortex, a middle layer, and a pith ring. The cortex refers to the area starting from the periphery of the culm wall to the vascular bundles. The present study obtained the two-dimensional (2D) microstructure of bamboo cortex cells by optical microscopy and characterized the three-dimensional (3D) structure through high-resolution X-ray microtomography (µCT). The 2D anatomical parameters of cortex cells were measured to verify the reliability of cortical cell classification in 3D models. Based on the analysis, the bamboo cortex cells were classified into four layers: epidermis layer, hypodermis layer, transitional layer, and parenchyma layer. The total volume of the reconstructed area of interest in μCT was 7.85 × 106 µm3, in which the total pore volume of bamboo cortex was 2.84 × 106 µm3, the average pore volume of bamboo cortex was about 1.54 × 103 µm3. Thus the porosity was 36.1%, and the relative density was 0.639. Studies on bamboo anatomical structure, especially three-dimensional digital characterization, will enrich the bamboo microstructure database. Besides, the three-dimensional structure of the bamboo cortex revealed in this study can provide a reference for optimizing composite material hierarchy and biomimetic design.

Abstract:Significant difference in microscopic structure of cocoon filaments from three silkworm varieties which shows extremely fine,coarse or normal size of silk were obseved in the present paper by scanning electron microscope.Results attained in this study showed that the hybrid Xinmiao×Mingri was not only much thicker in filament size but also better in tensile strength,which were confirmed by the physical properties of raw silk and fabric test.

Abstract:Fibers are used in many forms in engineering applications–one of the most common being used as reinforcement. Due to its renewable short natural growth cycle and abundance of bamboo resources, bamboo fiber has attracted attention over other natural fibers. Bamboo fiber has a complex natural structure but offers excellent mechanical properties, which are utilized in the textile, papermaking, construction, and composites industry. However, bamboo fibers can easily absorb moisture and are prone to corrosion limiting their use in engineering applications. Therefore, a better understanding of bamboo fiber is particularly important. This paper reviews all existing research on the mechanical characterization of bamboo fiber with an emphasis on the extraction and treatment techniques, and their effect on relevant properties. The chemical composition of bamboo fibers has also been thoroughly investigated and presented herein. Current applications and future opportunities for bamboo fibers in various fields have been presented with a focus on research needs. This work can serve as a reference for future research on bamboo fiber.

Abstract:Bamboo fiber cell walls are crucial mechanical load-bearing units in plants, significantly influencing their physical and mechanical properties. This study explored the multi-layered structure and microfibril orientation of typical moso bamboo fiber with two broad layers. The microfibrils in the primary cell wall exhibited a disordered mesh-like structure with a microfibril angle (MFA) of 90°. The alternating narrow and broad layers in the secondary walls constituted the growth cycle layer together. Within this structure, the microfibrils were oriented in both Z-helices and S-helices. In the narrow layers, the MFA transitioned gradually from outer to inner layers, ranging from approximately 70° to 30°. Conversely, the broad layers had smaller MFA, ranging from about 5° to 20°. Finally, a typical model of multi-layered microfibril orientation of 4-year-old moso bamboo fiber cells was proposed.

Abstract:The mechanical property and abrasive wear of natural bamboo were studied.The tensile strength,elastic modulus,fracture elongation and impact toughness of natural bamboo increased with the content of the fiber.The tensile strength of the longitudinal grain is 29 times higher,elastic modulus 1.2 times higher and fracture elongation 13 times higher than that to the cross grain.The tensile and impact fracture of the longitudinal grain have obvious fiber pull-out characteristics.The tensile and impact fracture of the cross grain have cleavage fracture characteristics,presenting a typical brittle fracture.Bamboo fiber has higher wear resistance than the matrix,the main damage characteristics of the worn surface is micro-ploughing and micro-cracking.The wear resistance of natural bamboo increased with the content of the fiber.

Abstract:Bamboo based composite materials are widely used for structural components in building and textile industries. The structural hierarchy across different scales could enhance the strength and toughness of bamboo for load-bearing applications. Firstly, chemical components of bamboo fibril are described, and bamboo fibril specimens are fabricated through chemical solution processing; Secondly, functionally graded mechanical properties of macroscopic bamboo fibers are studied with tensile experiments, and relations between graded mechanical properties and microstructures are explored; Afterwards, hierarchical microstructure characterization of bamboo across different scales are performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mechanical properties of bamboo fibrils are tested using homemade in-situ micro-tension setup. The results indicate that the elastic modulus, ultimate strain and strength of bamboo fibers are: 5.952 GPa, 0.0136 and 81.13 MPa respectively. The Young's moduli, ultimate strains and fracture strengths of the five fibril samples located in (10.478, 12.285) GPa, (0.0172, 0.0217) and (181.87, 230.50) MPa, respectively. These experimental results suggest that the modulus and ultimate strength of bamboo fibril are higher than that of bamboo fibers which are attributed to several main factors including the ages of the bamboo, bamboo species, multi-lamella structures of the fibrils, geometry differences of fibrils, etc.

Abstract:It explored a method of classified extraction, which is a physical-chemical combination, for preparing bamboo technical fiber. It can improve the utilization of bamboo fiber. Fiber morphology, fiber fineness, tensile characteristics, etc. of bamboo fiber were investigated. The external bamboo fiber contained higher amount of lignin and solvent extractive and lower amount of hemicellulose and noncellulose than the internal bamboo fiber. The degree of crystallinity, fineness, and tensile property of external bamboo fiber was also higher than internal bamboo fiber. Then it analyzed the relationship between fiber structure and properties.

Abstract:The microstructures of a whangee (a kind of bamboo) were observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). It showed that the whangee is a kind of natural cellular biocomposite consisting of countless bamboo cells. The bamboo cells are columnar and all of them are parallel with the surface of the bamboo. The observation also showed that the walls of the bamboo cell are a kind of fiber-reinforced biocomposite with bamboo fiber-spiral mcirstructure. Based on the SEM observation, a kind of biomimetic composite with the fiber-spiral structure was fabricated. The fracture toughness of the composite was investigated and compared with that of the conventional composite with parallel-fiber structure. It showed that the fracture toughness of the biomimetic composite is markedly larger than that of the conventional composite.

Abstract:Bamboo is a natural bio-composite that has outstanding mechanical properties. Fibers are the structural building block of bamboo. Understanding the effect of fiber area on tensile properties of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens Mazei ex. H. Lebaie) will shed light on natural efficient design of bamboo. In this paper, fiber area and tensile properties of bamboo were tested on four bamboo slices, and a relationship found between fiber area and tensile properties. The results indicated that fiber volume increased exponentially in the radial direction from the inside to the outside of the culm wall. Bamboo tensile strength and MOE were linearly proportional to the fiber area. Fiber area also influenced bamboo fracture modes.

Abstract:Although bamboo has been used structurally for millennia, there is currently increasing interest in the development of renewable and sustainable structural bamboo products (SBPs). These SBPs are analogous to wood products such as plywood, oriented strand board and glue-laminated wood. In this study, the properties of natural Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) are investigated to further enable the processing and design of SBPs. The radial and longitudinal density gradients in bamboo give rise to variations in the mechanical properties. Here, we measure the flexural properties of Moso bamboo in the axial direction, along with the compressive strengths in the axial and transverse directions. Based on the microstructural variations (observed with scanning electron microscopy) and extrapolated solid cell wall properties of bamboo, we develop models, which describe the experimental results well. Compared to common North American construction woods loaded along the axial direction, Moso bamboo is approximately as stiff and substantially stronger, in both flexure and compression but denser. This work contributes to critical knowledge surrounding the microstructure and mechanical properties of bamboo, which are vital to the engineering and design of sustainable SBPs.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduced a bamboo longitudinal flattening technology and analyzed the effects of the softening–flattening process on the physical and mechanical properties of moso bamboo. This is a newer bamboo processing technology that can enhance the utilization and reduce pollution compared with traditional bamboo-based products. Results showed that the parenchyma cells distorted and compacted due to the flattening process. The hemicellulose and cellulose content decreased, while the content of lignin presented an increasing tendency. As expected, the dimensional stability of moso bamboo enhanced due to the decrement of hemicellulose. The softening–flattening process positively contributed to the micro-mechanical properties of treated bamboo specimens. For example, the hardness and modulus of elasticity of the untreated bamboo sample increased from 0.58 and 15.7 GPa to 0.8 and 17.5 GPa, respectively. In addition, the changes in cellulose crystallinity and mechanical properties were also investigated in this paper. The cellulose crystallinity increased from 37.5% to 43.2%, significantly. However, the modulus of rupture of the flattened bamboo board decreased from 9000 to 7500 MPa due to the grooves made by the flattening roller. The MOE of flattening bamboo board showed the same decreasing tendency.

Abstract:Synchrotron radiation absorption based and phase-contrast X-ray tomographic microscopy techniques are applied for observation and identification of the 3D features of bamboo fiber and parenchyma cells at micro-scale. The results revealed the 3D features within the fiber-reinforced bamboo. As to the 3D microstructure, the fiber and the parenchyma cells matrix are reconstructed, respectively. The 3D reconstruction will reveal necessary 3D geometrical and material parameters for better understanding the mechanical and biological functions of bamboo and provide new research ideas for relevant mechanism and the design of hierarchical structure of composite material.
A comparative study on the crystalline structure of cellulose isolated from bamboo fibers and parenchyma cells

Abstract:Bamboo, with a high cellulose content comparable to that of wood, is a potential feedstock for biofuel and nanocellulose production. Mechanically isolated bamboo fibers and parenchyma cells exhibited remarkable differences in enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency as reported in a recent comparative study. It was assumed that cellulose microfibrils in bamboo fibers and parenchyma cells differ in their supramolecular structures. In the present study, X-ray diffraction and solid-state CP/MAS<sup>13</sup>C NMR studies indicated that, the two types of cells showed similar cellulose crystallinity index. The cellulose from bamboo fibers and parenchyma cells also exhibited differences in microfibril sizes, with lateral sizes of ca. 26.0–41.3 Å and ca. 22.7–39.3 Å for bamboo fibers and parenchyma cells respectively. It was further found that cellulose chains in bamboo fibers were more closely packed, supported by its smaller d-spacing than that of parenchyma cell cellulose. In addition, FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy revealed that there was a higher Iβ content in fibers than parenchyma cells. These differences in the crystalline structure of cellulose should be related to the lower recalcitrance to chemical degradation of parenchyma cells compared to bamboo fibers.

Abstract:Bamboo is a natural biological composite with superior mechanical strength and toughness. What is the secret recipe that Mother Nature uses to fabricate bamboo? Here we report discovery of cobble-like polygonal cellulose nanograins with a diameter of 21–198 nm in the cell wall of bamboo fibers. These nanograins are basic building blocks that are used to construct individual bamboo fibers. Nanoscale mechanical tests were carried out on individual fiber cell walls by nanoindentation. The nanograin-structured bamboo fibers are not brittle in nature but somewhat ductile. The bamboo fiber reinforcing mechanisms are discussed with reference to the hierarchical structure and mechanical properties of individual bamboo components.

Abstract:Bamboo is a natural biomass material with excellent properties such as antibacterial and deodorising properties. With the concept of green ecology gaining popularity, bamboo is also being used in a wide range of industries in various forms. With reference to cotton, linen and other plant fibres commonly used in the textile industry today, bamboo is proposed to be made into spun and twisted bamboo fibre bundles through a twisting process and then made into textile bamboo yarns through a certain textile process. The process is divided into three steps: first, the bamboo is delignified, then the bamboo is thinned into bamboo fibre bundles, and finally, the bamboo is twisted into bamboo fibre bundles using home-made equipment. By comparing the chemical composition, mechanical strength and microstructure of the twisted bamboo fibre bundles with those of the original bamboo fibre bundles, the effect of the twisting treatment process on the properties of the bamboo fibre bundles was analysed. The experimental results showed that the tenacity, elongation at break and stiffness of the twisted bamboo fibre bundles were significantly improved compared to the original bamboo fibre bundles. In conclusion, the twisted bamboo fibre bundles have good tenacity and strength and are a potential new material for textile yarns. (c) 2021 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
