Abstract:To take full advantage of moso bamboo processing waste, bamboo cellulose nanowhiskers were isolated from bamboo residues using sulfuric acid hydrolysis. Changes in bamboo cellulose at different stages of processing, as well as the roles of acid concentrations (55 wt% and 65 wt%) and hydrolysis times (1 h to 5 h) on the characteristics of nanowhiskers were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (TGA-FTIR), synchrotron radiation wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), composition analysis, and Brunauer-Emmett Teller (BET) analysis. Both rod-like and network-like nanowhiskers were observed. Alkaline pretreatment removed impurities and part of the hemicellulose. Cellulose content increased to nearly 85%, and specific surface area improved as well after bleaching. Nanowhiskers had an average length of 455 nm, diameter of 12 nm, and an aspect ratio of about 37. Cellulose I was the dominant composition in bamboo cellulose; the transformation of cellulose Iα to cellulose Iβ was observed. Nanowhiskers presented greater crystallinity and crystallite size than those of cellulose without hydrolysis, but lower thermal stability. These bionanowhiskers might be used as reinforcements in nanocomposites.

Abstract:The variation of cellulose microfibril orientation within the bamboo has been confirmed to be one of the critical factors exerting a strong influence on the mechanical properties of bamboo fibers, which is regarded as the response of the cell wall to the internal and external stimulus. In this paper, the radial gradient variation of the cellulose supramolecular structures of bamboo culm was systematically studied by XRD and the linear polarized confocal Raman microspectroscopy to deepen the understanding of the origin of bamboo micromechanics and its functionally graded properties. XRD analysis indicated that bamboo yellow (By) had the isotropic crystallite arrangements, while bamboo timber (Bt) and bamboo green (Bg) displayed preferred orientation of crystals. Moreover, both the crystallinity and crystallite sizes notably grew from the inner By to the Bg. At cell wall level, the variations in the distribution of microfibril orientation were visualized by Raman imaging, with the fiber secondary wall areas adjacent to compound middle lamella displaying higher Raman intensity. Furthermore, Raman band ratio ( I 1095 / I 2939 ) was used to predict the microfibril angle (MFA) in different cell wall types and morphologically distinct cell wall layers semi-quantitatively. The results showed that the ratio was the highest in parenchyma, followed by narrow layer of fiber wall, and the lowest in the broad layer, which indicated the high MFA in the parenchyma. Interestingly, the ratio decreased along the successive and alternating broad and narrow lamellae of fiber wall, in accordance with cell wall micromechanical trend.

Abstract:The cell wall mechanical properties are an important indicator for evaluating the overall mechanical properties of natural bamboo fibers. Using the nanoindentation technique, the variation of the mechanical properties of the fiber cell wall of Bambusa pervariabilis culms with different ages and different positions (both radial and longitudinal) was studied. Moreover, x-ray diffraction (XRD) was employed to measure the microfibril angle (MFA), and the correlation between the MFA and the mechanical properties of the fiber cell wall. The results showed that there was a remarkable difference in the fiber cell wall mechanical properties at different ages and at different radial and longitudinal positions. However, at different ages and at different positions, the absolute value of variation of MFA was less than 1° and was very minor. Furthermore, there was no significant correlation between the fiber cell wall mechanics and MFA, indicating that the mechanical property of the fiber cell walls might be synergistically affected by many factors.

Experimental Research on Standardized Bamboo Culm Components for Developing Prefabricated Bamboo Building

Abstract:Bamboo culm structures are useful for areas with limited access to structural wood, especially for remote bamboo forest areas. This study focuses on developing standardized bamboo culm components for the prefabricated bamboo building, which is potential to replace timber components made of dimension lumber used in modern timber buildings. The basic material properties of Moso bamboo and bamboo culm elements were investigated. Test results show that the main mechanical properties of bamboo culm are comparable to some coniferous wood, such as TC-13A grade (in Chinese standard). Several types of simple and reliable connectors were designed for connecting bamboo culms, attempting to provide standardized bamboo culm elements. The prefabricated shear wall elements were designed with bamboo culms as studs and glubam lumber as perimeter frame for regulate the dimension. Three shear wall models were tested under monotonic and cyclic lateral loading. It was found that the lateral resistance capacity of bamboo culm shear wall is about 64% of that of the similar lightweight wood frame shear walls. Three specimens of bamboo culm trusses were also tested to obtain the design capacity of the roof system. Based on the experimental test results, a prototype single-story building was designed and constructed to assess the feasibility of the constructional details. Carbon dioxide emission analysis revealed the environmentally friendly advantages of this type of bamboo building.
[Revealing the Cell Structure and Formation of Bamboo with Confocal Raman Microscopy].

Abstract:Parenchyma cell (PAC), transition tissue between parenchyma cell and fiber cell (TC) and fibre cell (FC) of bamboo were studied by confocal Raman microscopy in this paper. Partial least squares regression was applied to establish a quantitative differentiation model for the three types of cells. The result showed that the determination coefficients (R-2) of calibration and validation were respectively 0. 810 and 0. 800, and the root mean square error (RMSE) were respectively 0. 323 and 0. 332. What's more, three raman bands of 1 095, 1 319 and 1 636 cm(-1), verified to the characteristic peaks of pectin, hemicellulose and lignin, were found to be the important bands for the differentiation. Subsequently, these three raman bands were used to establish a multiple linear regression (MLR) model, and the determination coefficients (R-2) of calibration and validation of the model were respectively 0. 644 and 0. 643, and the root mean square error (RMSE) were respectively 0. 442 and 0. 443. This result showed that there existed obvious difference among the three types of cells in these three raman bands. Finally, the raman spectral signal processed by wavelet transform to eliminate baseline were used to chemical imaging analysis. These results showed a rather large microfibril angle between cellulose fibrils and fibre axis, which contributed to higher modulus and hardness of cells. Hemicellulose and cellulose have similar distribution in the raman chemical image, due to the connection of hemicellulose and cellulose microfiber through hydrogen bond and the closely combination under the action of van der Waals force. The cell corners (CC) and compound middle lamella (CML) were heavily lignified, and a gradual decrease of lignification from the outer layer to the inner layer of the three cells indicate that lignification was first occurred at the CC and CML, and the lignification was not fully completed.
Quantitative Visualization of Weak Layers in Bamboo at the Cellular and Subcellular Levels

Abstract:Weak layers in bamboo, which are prone to the generation of cracks or are the preferred routes for crack growth, govern the machining processes and applications of bamboo. Weak layers are avoided during storing but are utilized during splitting and slicing. Gaining an understanding of the weak layers is a priority that will allow for the determination of whether to avoid or utilize them. In this study, scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the weak layers at the cellular and subcellular levels. A nanoindentation instrument and a Raman microscope were used to quantitatively characterize the mechanical properties and chemical components of these weak layers. The results show that among the three types of bamboo cells, vessel cells were the most vulnerable to damage, while fiber cells were the least susceptible to damage. The weak layers at the subcellular level were compound middle lamella (CML), thin layers of cell walls, and pits. The average storage modulus values were as follows: 13.7 GPa for CML, 17.0 GPa for pits, 20.6 GPa for thin layers, and 25.3 GPa for thick layers. Compared with the thick layers, the maximum decrement of cellulose content was 51% in CML and 41% in thin layers. With the lowest cellulose content, CML was the likeliest subcellular structure in which cracks propagated. The hardness of the pits was lower than that of the adjacent non-pit areas. The mechanical properties of bamboo increased by targeted modification of the weak layers. This work demonstrates a comprehensive investigation into weak layers of bamboo and quantitatively visualizes their mechanical and chemical properties.

Abstract:Bamboo is a natural biological composite with superior mechanical strength and toughness. What is the secret recipe that Mother Nature uses to fabricate bamboo? Here we report discovery of cobble-like polygonal cellulose nanograins with a diameter of 21–198 nm in the cell wall of bamboo fibers. These nanograins are basic building blocks that are used to construct individual bamboo fibers. Nanoscale mechanical tests were carried out on individual fiber cell walls by nanoindentation. The nanograin-structured bamboo fibers are not brittle in nature but somewhat ductile. The bamboo fiber reinforcing mechanisms are discussed with reference to the hierarchical structure and mechanical properties of individual bamboo components.

Abstract:Bamboo is a fiber-reinforced bio-composite with superior structural behavior. The hollow structure as well as the gradient distribution of bamboo fiber is the embodiment of the superior bamboo construction. To validate this, tensile tests were performed on bamboo test specimens. The volume fractions of bamboo fiber and parenchymatous ground tissue along the radius of the culm wall were scanned and calculated. The elastic moduli of bamboo fiber and parenchymatous ground tissue were estimated, according to the linear equations obtained by regression analysis. With the equivalent volume, a numerical hollow model and solid model were built to make comparative analysis on their mechanical behavior. For the purpose of verifying the advantage of fiber gradient distribution, models, which were composed of fiber and parenchymatous ground tissue with different fiber distributions, were built for comparative analysis. Results show that under the condition of using the same material, the hollow structure as well as fiber gradient distribution of bamboo possess excellent mechanical performance of bamboo structure.

Unveiling the mechanisms of Moso bamboo's motor function and internal growth stress

Abstract:Bamboo, a renewable resource with rapid growth and an impressive height-to-diameter ratio, faces mechanical instability due to its slender structure. Despite this, bamboo maintains its posture without breaking in its battle against environmental and gravitational forces. But what drives this motor function in bamboo? This study subjected Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) to gravitational stimulation, compelling it to grow at a 45° angle instead of upright. Remarkably, the artificially inclined bamboo exhibited astonishing shape control and adjustment capabilities. The growth strain was detected at both macroscopic and microscopic levels, providing evidence for the presence of internal stress, namely growth stress. The high longitudinal tensile stress on the upper side, along with a significant asymmetry in stress distribution in tilted bamboo, plays a pivotal role in maintaining its mechanical stability. Drawing upon experimental findings, it can be deduced that the growth stress primarily originates from the broad layers of fiber cells. Bamboo could potentially regulate the magnitude of growth stress by modifying the number of fiber cell layers during its maturation process. Additionally, the microfibril angle and lignin disposition may decisively influence the generation of growth stress.
Unveiling the Structural Characteristics of Lignin and Lignin-Carbohydrate Complexes in Fibers and Parenchyma Cells of Moso Bamboo during Different Growing Years

Abstract:Understanding and recognizing the structural characteristics of lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCCs) and lignin in different growth stages and tissue types of bamboo will facilitate industrial processes and practical applications of bamboo biomass. Herein, the LCC and lignin samples were sequentially isolated from fibers and parenchyma cells of bamboo with different growth ages. The diverse yields of sequential fractions not only reflect the different biomass recalcitrance between bamboo fibers and parenchyma cells but also uncover the structural heterogeneity of these tissues at different growth stages. The molecular structures and structural inhomogeneities of the isolated lignin and LCC samples were comprehensively investigated. The results showed that the structural features of lignin and LCC linkages in parenchyma cells were abundant in β-O-4 linkages but less with carbon-carbon linkages, suggesting that lignin and cross-linked LCC in parenchyma cells are simple in nature and easily to be tamed and tractable in the current biorefinery. Parallelly, the different ball-milled samples were directly characterized by high-resolution (800 M) solution-state 2D-HSQC NMR to analyze the whole lignocellulosic material. Overall, the scheme presented in this study will provide a comprehensive understanding of lignin and LCC linkages in fibers and parenchyma cells of bamboo and enable the utilization of bamboo biomass.
Effect of Fiber on Tensile Properties of Moso Bamboo

Abstract:Bamboo is a natural bio-composite that has outstanding mechanical properties. Fibers are the structural building block of bamboo. Understanding the effect of fiber area on tensile properties of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens Mazei ex. H. Lebaie) will shed light on natural efficient design of bamboo. In this paper, fiber area and tensile properties of bamboo were tested on four bamboo slices, and a relationship found between fiber area and tensile properties. The results indicated that fiber volume increased exponentially in the radial direction from the inside to the outside of the culm wall. Bamboo tensile strength and MOE were linearly proportional to the fiber area. Fiber area also influenced bamboo fracture modes.
Micromechanical Modeling in Determining the Transverse Elastic Moduli and Stress Distributions of Bamboo

Abstract:In order to enhance the understanding of the microstructural characteristics of bamboo culm within transverse directions, two micromechanics models, Halpin–Tsai (H–T) equations and Mori–Tanaka (M–T) model, are introduced to generate the homogenized moduli in the transverse direction, which cannot be easily predicted using the traditional rule of mixtures that was mostly adopted in the previous literatures. A multi-scale framework is then created by connecting the micromechanics models with structural analysis of bamboo culm cross section, which is treated as concentric composite cylinders composed of fiber vascular bundles and ground tissue with different volume fractions that usually increase from inner periphery to outer periphery. Finally, several numerical examples are illustrated to prove the availability of the present micromechanics models in calculating homogenized moduli and practicing bamboo structural analysis. It has been found that the H–T equations and M–T model usually predict well-matched homogenized moduli, leading to similar stress distributions along the radial direction under symmetric loading boundary conditions. In general, both micromechanics models provide easy predictions of homogenized moduli for future numerical and experimental research of bamboo cross sections.

Abstract:Bamboo is predominantly composed of parenchyma and fibers, with parenchyma constituting approximately 52% of the bamboo culm wall. The bamboo fibers function as the primary load-bearing elements, its structure and performance have been studied in detail. However, investigations concerning the structure and mechanical properties of parenchyma tissue remain limited. Consequently, this study focuses on the comprehensive characterization of the three-dimensional (3D) structure of bamboo parenchyma. Additionally, the study encompasses the evaluation of tensile and compressive properties of parenchyma tissue, along with an analysis and discourse on failure mechanisms. Parenchyma cells can be categorized into two types: long cells, accounting for approximately 89.37%, and short cells. The measured tensile strength and elastic modulus of the parenchyma tissue are 48.81 MPa and 706.48 MPa, respectively. The propagation of cracks leading to tensile failure predominantly occurs along the middle lamella, accompanied by partial penetration through cell walls. Concerning parenchyma tissue compression, three discernible stages can be identified: the elastic stage, plateau stage, and densification stage. The axial load-bearing capacity of parenchyma tissue exceeds that of the tangential and radial orientations. Axial compressive strength and elastic modulus of the parenchyma are measured at 18.82 MPa and 5.24 GPa, respectively. Compression failure modes in parenchyma tissue encompass compression bending and cell fracture, shear failure of the middle lamella, and detachment and debonding of the cell wall. The comprehensive structural and mechanical parameters derived from this investigation provide valuable insights for the development of numerical models and understanding the various mechanical properties of bamboo.

Abstract:Bamboo is a natural fiber composite with layered structure. Millions of years of evolution have endowed bamboo with the most effective structure in nature. The ingenious microstructure provides bamboo with excellent mechanical properties. Bamboo culm is composed of the cortex, a middle layer, and a pith ring. The cortex refers to the area starting from the periphery of the culm wall to the vascular bundles. The present study obtained the two-dimensional (2D) microstructure of bamboo cortex cells by optical microscopy and characterized the three-dimensional (3D) structure through high-resolution X-ray microtomography (µCT). The 2D anatomical parameters of cortex cells were measured to verify the reliability of cortical cell classification in 3D models. Based on the analysis, the bamboo cortex cells were classified into four layers: epidermis layer, hypodermis layer, transitional layer, and parenchyma layer. The total volume of the reconstructed area of interest in μCT was 7.85 × 106 µm3, in which the total pore volume of bamboo cortex was 2.84 × 106 µm3, the average pore volume of bamboo cortex was about 1.54 × 103 µm3. Thus the porosity was 36.1%, and the relative density was 0.639. Studies on bamboo anatomical structure, especially three-dimensional digital characterization, will enrich the bamboo microstructure database. Besides, the three-dimensional structure of the bamboo cortex revealed in this study can provide a reference for optimizing composite material hierarchy and biomimetic design.

Abstract:Bamboo is an appealing source of engineering materials due to its renewability and sustainability. However, the traditional method of processing bamboo splits using four-side planing leads to a very low utilization rate of bamboo materials. Additionally, the non-uniform structure of the bamboo culm wall results in a concentration of higher density towards the outer part and a gradual decrease towards the inner part. To address these issues, this study proposes an effective and environmentally friendly method that combines flattening and densification to modify the heterogenous structure and enhance the properties of natural bamboo. Natural bamboo splits with a moisture content of 70 % were compressed by 44 % along the radial direction of culm wall for 20 min at temperatures of 170 °C and 190 °C, respectively. The gradient characteristics of modified bamboo including microstructure, density, and mechanical properties were investigated for the first time to explore the effect of flattening and densification on the heterogenous bamboo material. After modification, the parenchyma tissues were collapsed, the fiber bundle fraction increased, and the differences in lumen size and fiber fraction between the outer and the inner parts of bamboo splits decreased. The density of the inner part of bamboo splits was tremendously increased to over 1.0 g/cm 3 and was consistent with that of the outer part. The tensile and bending properties across the gradient were significantly improved, and the weaker section was reinforced and possessed a strength equivalent to the sturdy part of natural bamboo. Furthermore, the tensile and bending properties of full-thickness bamboo splits were improved, and the change in stress distribution led to a stable structure replacing the previously vulnerable structure.

Abstract:The present work is aiming at the elucidation of the tensile behaviour and fracture performance of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens Mazei ex H. de Lebaie) by means of digital speckle correlation method (DSCM) and microscopic techniques. Results indicated that fibres play a major role in longitudinal tension and impeding crack radial propagation. Hybrid I-II failure mode was observed, i.e., crack opening (in tensile stress) and shear sliding (in shear stress). According to microscopic fracture characteristics, fibres extraction and stretching, filament formation in parenchyma with fibres bridging, interface debonding and the helix fracture of fibres happened in tension, which created more interfaces and dissipated more energy. The graded composite structure of bamboo provides intrinsic and extrinsic toughening mechanisms which contribute to improved toughness and physical properties.
Structural and Chemical Analysis of Three Regions of Bamboo (Phyllostachys Edulis)

Abstract:This study focuses on three different regions of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis): an inner layer (IB), middle layer (MB), and outer layer (OB), to comprehensively characterize the structural features, chemical composition (ash, extractives and lignin contents), and the lignin monomeric composition as determined by analytical pyrolysis. The results show that bamboo presents a gradient structure. From the IB to OB, the vascular bundle density and fiber sheath ratio increase, the porosity decreases (from 45.92% to 18.14%), and the vascular bundle diameter–chord ratio increases (from 0.85 to 1.48). In terms of chemical composition, the ash, extractives, and acid-soluble lignin content gradually decrease from IB to OB. The holocellulose content follows the trend: MB (66.3%) > OB (65.9%) > IB (62.8%), while the acid-insoluble lignin content exhibits the opposite trend: IB (22.6%) > OB (17.8%) > MB (17.7%). Pyrolysis products reveal the diversity of carbohydrates and lignin derivatives, with a lignin monomeric composition rich in syringyl and guaiacyl units and lower amounts of H-units: the IB has an H:G:S relation of 18:26:55, while 15:27:58 is the ratio for the MB and 15:40:45 for the OB; S/G ratio values were, respectively, 1.22, 1.46, and 0.99. A comprehensive analysis highlights significant gradient variations in the structure and chemistry of bamboo, providing robust support for the classification and refinement methods of bamboo residues for potential applications.

Analyzing the structure of bamboo culms using computer vision and mechanical simulation

Abstract:Bamboo culm is a natural material characterized by a graded structure of vascular bundles in the radial direction and a regular distribution of bamboo nodes in the axial direction. To investigate the adaptation of bamboo culm structure to its natural environment, the bamboo culm structure was analyzed using a vascular bundle identification model, complemented by mechanical simulations. The results showed a certain pattern in the macroscopic dimensional characteristics of bamboo from the base to the top: the outer diameter decreased linearly; the internode length initially increased before decreasing; the length-to-diameter ratio gradually increased; and the wall-to-cavity ratio initially decreased before increasing. In response to external forces, bamboo exhibited strong stability, which was attributed to the thin and hollow wall as well as parabolic distribution of bamboo nodes. Along the axial direction, vascular bundle numbers linearly decreased, while the ratio of fiber sheath tissue and the distribution frequency of vascular bundles increased from the base to the top. In the radial direction, the length and area of vascular bundles tended to increase before decreasing, while the width tended to increase, leading to a decreasing length-to-width ratio. Overall, the radial variation pattern of vascular bundles showed nonsignificant variations at different heights.

Abstract:Abstract Structural organization of the plant cell wall is a key parameter for understanding anisotropic plant growth and mechanical behavior. Four imaging platforms were used to investigate the cell wall architecture of Miscanthus sinensis cv. internode tissue. Using transmission electron microscopy with potassium permanganate, we found a great degree of inhomogeneity in the layering structure (4–9 layers) of the sclerenchymatic fiber (Sf). However, the xylem vessel showed a single layer. Atomic force microscopy images revealed that the cellulose microfibrils (Mfs) deposited in the primary wall of the protoxylem vessel (Pxv) were disordered, while the secondary wall was composed of Mfs oriented in parallel in the cross and longitudinal section. Furthermore, Raman spectroscopy images indicated no variation in the Mf orientation of Pxv and the Mfs in Pxv were oriented more perpendicular to the cell axis than that of Sfs. Based on the integrated results, we have proposed an architectural model of Pxv composed of two layers: an outermost primary wall composed of a meshwork of Mfs and inner secondary wall containing parallel Mfs. This proposed model will support future ultrastructural analysis of plant cell walls in heterogeneous tissues, an area of increasing scientific interest particularly for liquid biofuel processing.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Although short bamboo nodes function in mechanical support and fluid exchange for bamboo survival, their structures are not fully understood compared to unidirectional fibrous internodes. Here, we identify the spatial heterostructure of the bamboo node via multiscale imaging strategies and investigate its mechanical properties by multimodal mechanical tests. We find three kinds of hierarchical fiber reinforcement schemes that originate from the bamboo node, including spatially tightened interlocking, triaxial interconnected scaffolding and isotropic intertwining. These reinforcement schemes, built on porous vascular bundles, microfibers and more-refined twist-aligned nanofibers, govern the structural stability of the bamboo via hierarchical toughening. In addition, the spatial liquid transport associated with these multiscale fibers within the bamboo node is experimentally verified, which gives perceptible evidence for life-indispensable multidirectional fluid exchange. The functional integration of mechanical reinforcement and liquid transport reflects the fact that the bamboo node has opted for elaborate structural optimization rather than ingredient richness. This study will advance our understanding of biological materials and provide insight into the design of fiber-reinforced structures and biomass utilization.
