Abstract:Two novel thiophenes, grijisyne A (1), and grijisone A (2), were isolated from the crude ethanolic extract of the roots of Echinops grijissi Hance. Their structures were determined by spectral methods, especially 2D NMR spectra. All the isolated compounds were tested for their anti-tumor activities against three human tumor cell lines, HL-60, K562, and MCF-7.

Abstract:Three compounds were isolated from Phyllanthus niruri Linn. One effective method, improved dry column liquid chromatography for isolating these compounds, was applied on a silica gel column. It is a combination of conventional dry column chromatographic and flash chromatographic techniques. Structures of those obtained compounds were elucidated by means of spectral techniques including IR, MS, and 1D NMR and 2D NMR. Compound 1 was elucidated as 2,3,5,6-tetrahydroxybenzyl acetate. Compound 2 , 2,4,5-trihydroxy-3-(4,6,7-trihydroxy-3-oxo-1,3-dihydroisobenzofuran-5-yl)-benzoic acid methyl ester, was given the name phyllangin, and compound 3 was named corilagin. Compounds 1 and 2 are new compounds.

Abstract:Three new tetramic acid derivatives, tolypocladenols A1, A2, and B (1-3), a new pyridone alkaloid, tolypyridone A (4), and a new coumarin derivative, 3,8-dihydroxy-4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-6-methylcoumarin (5), together with four known compounds (6-9) were isolated from the endolichenic fungus Tolypocladium cylindrosporum, which inhabits the lichen Lethariella zahlbruckneri. Structures of these compounds were determined by comprehensive analysis of spectroscopic data and single-crystal X-ray diffraction determination. Bioassay of the isolated compounds found that pyridoxatin (7) was cytotoxic to human cancer cells by induction of G0/G1 cell cycle arrest and apoptosis.

Abstract:Two new quinoline alkaloids ( 1 – 2 ) together with twenty-two known alkaloids ( 3 – 24 ) were isolated and identified from Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz. Compounds 6 – 7 , 9 , 11 , 15 – 16 , 19 and 24 were isolated from D. dasycarpus for the first time. The structures of all compounds were characterised by spectroscopic methods (1D, 2D NMR and HRESIMS). The anti-proliferative activity was mediated by the arrest of three human cancer cell lines (SW982, HepG2 and A549) of all the compounds that were evaluated by CCK-8 assay.

Abstract:Three new hetisine type C 20 -diterpenoid alkaloids, named as trichophorines A–C ( 1–3 ), were isolated from Delphinium trichophorum , together with nine known alkaloids ( 4–12 ). Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data (1D, 2D NMR, single-crystal X-ray, and HR-ESI-MS). All compounds were evaluated for the inhibitory activities against LPS induced NO production in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells, and none of them showed considerable inhibitory activity.

Abstract:Four new compounds ( 1 – 4 ) were isolated from the whole plants of two species of Delphinium , including two C 20 -diterpenoid alkaloids, umbrodines A and B ( 1 and 2 ), and a dibenzoxazepinone, umbrolide A ( 3 ) from Delphinium umbrosum Hand.-Mazz. and a C 20 -diterpenoid alkaloid, kingiadine ( 4 ) from Delphinium kingianum Bruhl. ex Huth. Ten known diterpenoid alkaloids were also isolated. Their structures were elucidated via HR-ESIMS, IR, and NMR data. Lycoctonine ( 11 ) and delectinine ( 12 ) exhibited appreciable cardiac activity. Furthermore, 11 and 12 showed cardioprotective effects against doxorubicin-induced toxicity in H9c2 cells, with the maximum protection rates of 61.63% and 51.18%, respectively. Graphical

Abstract:Delphinium grandiflorum , one of the well-known Delphinium species, contains diverse bioactive diterpenoid alkaloids (DAs), which promoted a systematic phytochemical study on this plant. As a result, two new DAs, namely 16-demethyl tuguaconitine ( 1 ) and 6- O -acetyl-16-demethyldelsoline ( 2 ), together with one known analogue pseudophnine A ( 3 ) were obtained from the whole herbs of D. grandiflorum . Their structures were elucidated by use of extensive spectroscopic analysis (HR-ESIMS, IR, 1D and 2D NMR). Additionally, the inhibitory effects of these obtained individual compounds were also evaluated in vitro for lung cancer cell line (A549), liver cancer cell line (SMMC-7721), and breast cancer cell line (MCF-7). The results of cytotoxic activities showed that only compound 2 exhibit weak inhibitory effect on SMMC-7721 and MCF-7, and their IC 50 values were 37.4 and 33.1 μM, respectively. However, compound 1 and 3 had no obvious cytotoxic activities (IC 50 >80 μM).

Abstract:Eleven triterpenoids were isolated from the fruits of Phellodendron chinense Schneid, and their structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis. The results show that four new tirucallane-type triterpenoids 1, 2, 5, and 6 and seven known compounds 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 were isolated. Structurally, compound 6 was uncommon; it has a chlorine atom instead of a methyl group at the C-20 position. The cytotoxicities of the compounds was evaluated against the in vitro proliferation of four human tumor cell lines HEL, K562, MDA, and PC3 using adriamycin as the positive control. Compound 1 showed a similar cytotoxicity as the positive control; compounds 3 and 10 showed moderate cytotoxicities compared to the control (P<0.05). This indicates that these compounds have great potential for the development of new antitumor drugs.

Abstract:Toona ciliata , a member of the Meliaceae family, is valued for its high-quality timber and medicinal potential in treating various ailments. In this study, two triterpene isomers were isolated and characterised as an inseparable mixture from its chloroform extract using chromatography and spectroscopic techniques. Despite rigorous/extensive attempts to separate these isomers, they co-crystallised in a consistent 67:33 ratio, as verified by X-ray crystallography. The structure was further confirmed by ESI-MS, HRMS, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, DEPT 90, DEPT 135, COSY, NOESY, HSQC, and HMBC. Additionally, four more compounds were isolated successfully, out of that lutein and dyscusin C found for the first time from this plant.

Abstract:Three new dihydrophenanthrenes, retusiusine D (1), retusiusine E (2), retusiusine F (3), and a new phenanthrene retusiusine G (4), together with two known dihydrophenanthrenes 4,7-dihydroxy-2,3-methylenedioxy-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene (5) and epemeranthol-A (6) were isolated from the tubers of Bulbophyllum retusiusculum. Their structures were established on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analyses. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited potent cytotoxic activities against SMMC-7721 and weak cytotoxic activities against HL-60. Compound 4 showed moderate cytotoxic activity against SMMC-7721 and MCF-7.

Abstract:Amestolkins A (1) and B (2), two previously undescribed phthalides sharing the same planar structure of (1, 5-dihydroxyhexyl)-7-hydroxyisobenzofuran-1(3H)-one were isolated from Talaromyces amestolkiae. Their absolute configurations were elucidated by comprehensive analyses of spectroscopic evidences in high-resolution electrospray mass spectra (HRESIMS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) combined with electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and NMR calculations. 1 and 2 showed anti-neuroinflammatory activity by inhibiting the gene expressions of proinflammatory factors including C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL-2), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6), as well as attenuating the excretion of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in BV-2 microglial cells at the concentration of 30 μM.

Abstract:Three new indole alkaloids, named talatensindoids A‐C (1‐3), together with two known biogenetically related indole alkaloids tryptamine (4) and L‐tryptophan (5) were isolated from the Talaromyces assiutensis JTY2 based on the guidance of OSMAC approach. The structures of these indole alkaloids were determined by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses. The absolute configuration of 3 was confirmed by X‐ray crystallographic analysis. Compound 1 represent the rare example of a chlorine‐substituted indole alkaloid from natural products. The inhibitory activity of compounds 1‐5 against two phytopathogenic fungi and three phytopathogenic bacteria was evaluated. Compound 1 exhibited broad spectrum antibacterial activities.

Abstract:Twenty compounds were isolated from the pollen of Typha angustifolia L. using refluxing methanol. These compounds included seven flavonoids (1–7), four glycerolipids (8–11), three alkaloids (12–14), three steroids (15–17), two carboxylic acids (18, 19) and one cerebroside (20). The structures of the compounds were determined by NMR spectroscopy and the spectroscopic data were compared to previously reported data. Compound 17 was isolated from the pollen of T. angustifolia L. for the first time in this study and compounds 8–11 and 16 were discovered in the family Typhaceae for the first time. The chemotaxonomic significance of these compounds isolated from T. angustifolia L. was discussed.

Abstract:Two compounds (1 and 2) have been isolated from the stem bark of Dysoxylum binectariferum (Roxb.) Hook. f. ex Bedd. Compound 1 is rohitukine [5,7-dihydroxy-2-methyl-8-[4-(3-hydroxy-1- methyl)-piperidinyl]-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one], a known compound that has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities. Compound 2 is a new alkaloid, named rohitukine N-oxide, the structure of which was elucidated on the basis of spectral evidences and comparison with the 1H NMR data of rohitukine.

Abstract:Tetracyclic triterpenoids (named as altissimanins A–E, 1–5) and a terpenylated coumarin (denominated as altissimacoumarin G, 6), along with fifteen known compounds (7–21) were isolated from the bark of Ailanthus altissima. Structures of compounds 1–6 were established by spectroscopic methods and chemical transformations. Altissimanin A (1) is a tirucallane-type triterpenoid bearing an uncommon oxetane ring in the side-chain, while altissimanins D (4) and E (5) are two unprecedented dimers each consisting of one tirucallane-type and one dammarane-type triterpenoid moiety. All the isolates were evaluated for their cytotoxic effects against a small panel of human cancer cell lines.

Abstract:Three new dihydrophenanthrenes were isolated from the whole plant of Elatostema tenuicaudatum collected in Vietnam. These compounds were identified as 2,3,5-trihydroxy-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene ( 1 ), 2-methoxy-5-hydroxy-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene 3-O- β -D-glucopyranoside ( 2 ), and 2,5-dihydroxy-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene 3-O- β -D-glucopyranoside ( 3 ). Their structures were determined by HR-ESI-MS and 1D, 2D NMR spectroscopy. Furthermore, the inhibitory activities of these compounds against nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide-activated RAW264.7 cells were evaluated. Compound 1 exhibited significant inhibition of NO production, with an IC 50 value of 15.8 ± 1.2 μM. This study represents the first report on the chemical compositions and biological activities of E. tenuicaudatum .

Abstract:Aim To study the chemical constituents of Cypripedium tibeticum. Methods Compounds were isolated by repeated silica gel chromatography and purified on Sephadex LH-20 and structures were determined by spectral analysis. Results Cypritibetquinones A and B were isolated from the ethyl acetate residue and their structures were determined as 7-hydroxy-2-methoxy-1, 4-phenanthraquinone ( 1 ) and 7-hydroxy-2,10-dimethoxy-1,4-phenanthraquinone ( 2 ), respectively, by extensive spectral analyses. Conclusion Cypritibetquinones A and B are two new phenanthraquinones.
