Forestry Education Towards Ecological Civilization

Abstract:China has determined to construct ecological civilization, according to the recent government reports. It is a natural product of historical records, existing problems and future trends. To keep pace with the time and advanced countries, forestry education in China is beginning to transform from the traditional cultivation and utilization of resources to the energy conservation and sustainable development. The recent achievements of our lab in forestry education were reviewed in this chapter. The construction and reformation of forestry disciplines, introduction of new subordinate disciplines and comprehensive multi-disciplinary crossing development as well as multi-channel international exchanges are fundamental toward the realization of ecological civilization. Remarkable progresses in the ecological-concerned forestry disciplines provide a good ecological and environmental education platform for cultivating individual's consciousness and improving the public awareness. The co-development of forestry disciplines and individuals is advocated in forestry education in China. The importance of the individual's ideaistic regeneration and the improvement of public awareness can not be overestimated as well. It is urged to carry out scientific researches bearing in mind the harmony between humanity and nature, including the topics of carbon cycling mechanisms, ecological amelioration of saline-alkali soils, biological invasion and conservation and etc. On basis of the physiological characterizations, the spatial pattern dynamics of forest plants and the relationship to the environmental factors as well as the eco-cultivation, eco-production and eco-utilization, nonlinear ecological model, ecological technology method and theory of plant life cycle forms were proposed. These models show a good explanation to the complicated ecological problems and reveal profoundly their inherent ecological mechanisms, thus contributing the in-depth understanding of ecological civilization. In addition, the explorations by the scientific researches inform us how to harmoniously develop between humanity and nature and realize the ecological civilization. In this way, a harmonious society will be established in China, which we believe is the goal of forestry education.
