Abstract:Mg-9Al-1Zn-5RE (wt% with RE = Y, Nd, La, Ce or Pr) has been characterised as melt-spun, after heat treatment at 100 to 400 degrees C and, for RE = La or Nd, after consolidation by extrusion at 230 to 340 degrees C. Microstructure as-spun comprised fine grained alpha Mg with AL(11)RE(3) or Al2RE dispersoids. Precipitation of Mg17Al12 on heat treatment was confined to 200 to 300 degrees C, only Al11RE3 or Al2RE being precipitated at 350 or 400 degrees C, hardening increments as a results of the RE addition being 30 to 60% as-spun and after heat treatment at temperatures up to 300 degrees C. Extrusion of canned Mg-9Al-1Zn-5La ribbons at 230 degrees C and 25:1 reduction ratio resulted in UTS of 487 MPa and 0.2% proof strength of 434 MPa with 6.5 per cent elongation to fracture, as a result of the fine grain size (0.3 +/- 0.1 mu m retained in the alpha Mg matrix. It is concluded that fine alpha Mg matrix grain size stabilized by an ultrafine rare earth aluminide dispersoid is the crucial factor in accounting for the superior strength and stability of this class of alloy compared with similarly processed AZ91.
