Abstract:<p>The 'Cambrian Explosion' describes the rapid increase in animal diversity and abundance, as manifest in the fossil record, between ~540 and 520 million years ago (Ma). This event, however, is nested within a far more ancient record of macrofossils extending at least into the late Ediacaran at ~571 Ma. The evolutionary events documented during the Ediacaran–Cambrian interval coincide with geochemical evidence for the modernisation of Earth's biogeochemical cycles. Holistic integration of fossil and geochemical records leads us to challenge the notion that the Ediacaran and Cambrian worlds were markedly distinct, and places biotic and environmental change within a longer-term narrative. We propose that the evolution of metazoans may have been facilitated by a series of dynamic and global changes in redox conditions and nutrient supply, which, potentially together with biotic feedbacks, enabled turnover events that sustained multiple phases of radiation. We argue that early metazoan diversification should be recast as a series of successive, transitional radiations that extended from the late Ediacaran and continued through the early Palaeozoic. We conclude that while the Cambrian Explosion represents a radiation of crown-group bilaterians, it was simply one phase amongst several metazoan radiations, some older and some younger.</p>

Abstract:Abstract The Cambrian Explosion by nature is a three-phased explosion of animal body plans alongside episodic biomineralization, pulsed change of generic diversity, body size variation, and progressive increase of ecosystem complexity. The Cambrian was a time of crown groups nested by numbers of stem groups with a high-rank taxonomy of Linnaean system (classes and above). Some stem groups temporarily succeeded while others were ephemeral and underrepresented by few taxa. The high number of stem groups in the early history of animals is a major reason for morphological gaps across phyla that we see today. Most phylum-level clades achieved their maximal disparity (or morphological breadth) during the time interval close to their first appearance in the fossil record during the early Cambrian, whereas others, principally arthropods and chordates, exhibit a progressive exploration of morphospace in subsequent Phanerozoic. The overall envelope of metazoan morphospace occupation was already broad in the early Cambrian though it did not reach maximal disparity nor has diminished significantly as a consequence of extinction since the Cambrian. Intrinsic and extrinsic causes were extensively discussed but they are merely prerequisites for the Cambrian Explosion. Without the molecular evolution, there could be no Cambrian Explosion. However, the developmental system is alone insufficient to explain Cambrian Explosion. Time-equivalent environmental changes were often considered as extrinsic causes, but the time coincidence is also insufficient to establish causality. Like any other evolutionary event, it is the ecology that make the Cambrian Explosion possible though ecological processes failed to cause a burst of new body plans in the subsequent evolutionary radiations. The Cambrian Explosion is a polythetic event in natural history and manifested in many aspects. No simple, single cause can explain the entire phenomenon.

Abstract:The reconstruction of the phylogenetic tree of animals (TOA) has long been one of the central interests in biological and paleobiological sciences. We review the latest results of paleontological and stratigraphical studies on the Ediacaran–Cambrian sequences mainly from South China for revising the TOA in accordance with modern genome biology. A particular focus is given to the pattern of animal diversification based on the fossil first appearances of high-rank clades chiefly in phylum-level. The results show an abrupt divergence of lineages during the Ediacaran–Cambrian transition; however, the appearances of metazoan phyla were obviously diachronous, with three major phases recognized herein. The first phase is marked by the appearances of basal metazoan phyla in the latest Ediacaran. Very few unequivocal bilaterian clades were present at this phase. The second phase occurred in the Terreneuvian (Cambrian Stages 1–2), represented by the occurrences of many lophotrochozoan lineages. This phase also involves the appearances of calcified basal metazoan lineages, and possibly, those of contentious ecdysozoans in the latest Terreneuvian, but no deuterostome has been known from this age. The third and also the largest phase occurred in the Cambrian Stage 3, which involve all the three supraphylogenetic clades of the Eubilateria. A number of lophotrochozoan lineages, the bulk of ecdysozoans, and all deuterostome phyla, appeared for the first time in this phase. Since there is no unambiguous evidence for bilaterians in the Ediacaran, the Cambrian explosion sensu stricto was an abrupt diversification of bilateral lineages in a short time of ca. 25millionyears across the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary. Next critical issues in research include high-resolution chrono- and chemostratigraphic analyses, correlations between biotic events and environmental perturbations, physiological approach to the biological connotation of biomineralization, and exploration for the lost mid-oceanic biota and environments, which are crucial in understanding the entire picture of the Cambrian explosion.

Abstract:As signposted by the fossil record, the early Cambrian period chronicles the appearance and evolutionary diversification of most animal phyla in a geologically rapid event, traditionally termed the Cambrian Explosion.The uniqueness of this event pleads for a cause, and over the years, numerous biotic and abiotic factors have been offered as possible triggers.Many such explanations, however, either fail to correspond in time or do not provide a functional mechanism to explain the evolutionary pattern of animal diversification.We support the notion that a series of requisite biotic and abiotic events ushered in the Cambrian Explosion, wherein each event was necessary for the implementation of later events but did not guarantee their occurrence.The evolution of the terminal Ediacaran vermiform fauna was integral in the construction of the Eltonian pyramid, fostered an escalation of ecosystem engineering and macropredation, and represented a turning point in benthic ecosystems from those governed primarily by competition for space and resources to those also shaped by these novel pressures.
The Avalon Explosion: Evolution of Ediacara Morphospace.

Abstract:Ediacara fossils [575 to 542 million years ago (Ma)] represent Earth's oldest known complex macroscopic life forms, but their morphological history is poorly understood. A comprehensive quantitative analysis of these fossils indicates that the oldest Ediacara assemblage-the Avalon assemblage (575 to 565 Ma)-already encompassed the full range of Ediacara morphospace. A comparable morphospace range was occupied by the subsequent White Sea (560 to 550 Ma) and Nama (550 to 542 Ma) assemblages, although it was populated differently. In contrast, taxonomic richness increased in the White Sea assemblage and declined in the Nama assemblage. These diversity changes, occurring while morphospace range remained relatively constant, led to inverse shifts in morphological variance. The Avalon morphospace expansion mirrors the Cambrian explosion, and both events may reflect similar underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:The Cambrian radiation is characterized by the emergence of diverse bilaterian animal phyla and the establishment of complex marine ecosystems. The Guanshan Biota records an unusual ecological transition from trilobite- to brachiopod-dominated communities during Cambrian Stage 4. This community transition is accompanied by direct evidence of in situ biological interactions such as durophagous predation and kleptoparasitism. Here we describe new material from the Guanshan biota, focusing on an association of palaeoscolecidomorphs and brachiopods with parasitic tube worms that occur on microbedding planes. The bedding plane assemblages are dominated by the organophosphatic brachiopod Neobolus wulongqingensis encrusted with kleptoparasitic tube-dwelling worms, along with infaunal palaeoscolecidans. Taphonomic and sedimentological evidence indicates that these specimens are commonly preserved in life position, and thus the association between individuals represent potential biological interactions. This case study reveals that ecosystems during the early Cambrian exhibited a welldeveloped system of tiering and a complex trophic network, easily distinguished from the simple communities typical of precursor deposits in the Ediacaran. Brachiopods forming extremely dense concentrations on the sea floor are effectively acting as ecosystem engineers, not only to stabilize the soft-substrate seafloor, but also act as an alternative substrate for the oldest empirically demonstrated kleptoparasites. The in situ biological interactions preserved in the Guanshan Biota are critical for filling gaps in our knowledge of ecosystem complexity in the Cambrian.(c) 2022 The Authors. Abstract:The Cambrian explosion ultimately resulted in the critical transition from microbially dominated ecosystems in the Precambrian to metazoan-dominated ecosystems in the Phanerozoic. However, the temporospatial pattern of ecosystems during the Cambrian explosion is poorly understood largely because our current knowledge is biased in metazoan evolution and redox conditions, and thus insufficient to reconstruct an ecosystem that is an integrative entirety of biotic and abiotic components. Therefore, we proposed a facies-dependent integrative approach as a working hypothesis toward a more comprehensive understanding of ecosystem evolution during the Cambrian explosion. The basis is to collect data from a rock unit with a consistent facies (or a biota) in five aspects: biodiversity, ecological network, climate, environmental trio (living, taphonomic and sedimentary conditions), and biogeochemical cycles. On the basis the temporospatial pattern can be built by tracking the spatial heterogeneity and tracing the temporal variability. Although the scenario is a general solution, not obligately applicable to the Cambrian explosion, and needs tremendous amount of work, it is a practical way, probably the only way, to understand such a global event with great complexity.

Abstract:Since Darwin’s time the total number of recorded fossils has grown enormously, and so has their importance as documents of the real history of the organic world. Many previously missing links in the documentation of the course of evolution have been found. The discovery of some of them had been predicted by comparative anatomists and embryologists. Some fossils are truly transitional between major existing groups so that their classification in the framework of established systematics is difficult. Fossils enable us to trace the evolution of vertebrates as far back as the Ordovician when the first fragmentary fish bones appear in the record. We have no reason to assume that vertebrates originated much before that time. Invertebrate fossils are abundant, so much so that they provide in many instances statistically significant samples. Evolutionary lineages have been established on the basis of collections made from successive strata, as well as by general comparisons of fossil representatives of different genera, families and higher taxa. The interrelationships of cephalopods, of decapod crustaceans, the origin of asteroids, the evolutionary lineages of many groups of bivalved molluscs, even of insects, are well documented by significant fossils. But when we ask such questions about the relationships between the classes of the coelenterates, or the arthropods, or when we try to find the ancestors of the brachiopods, or of the echinoderms, we get little, if any, more enlightenment from the study of fossils than from the investigation of living animals. We can follow these groups of animals down through the Palaeozoic strata into the Cambrian where most though not all phyla of the invertebrates are represented. When we reach the Lower Cambrian the record is diminished and Pre-Cambrian rocks are considered, as a general rule, to be unfossiliferous.

Abstract:The Ediacaran–Cambrian transition and the following Cambrian Explosion are among the most fundamental events in the evolutionary history of animals. Understanding these events is enhanced when phylogenetic linkages can be established among animal fossils across this interval and their trait evolution monitored. Doing this is challenging because the fossil record of animal lineages that span this transition is sparse, preserved morphologies generally simple and lifestyles in the Ediacaran and Cambrian commonly quite different. Here, we identify derived characters linking some members of an enigmatic animal group, the cloudinids, which first appeared in the Late Ediacaran, to animals with cnidarian affinity from the Cambrian Series 2 and the Miaolingian. Accordingly, we present the first case of an animal lineage represented in the Ediacaran that endured and diversified successfully throughout the Cambrian Explosion by embellishing its overall robustness and structural complexity. Among other features, dichotomous branching, present in some early cloudinids, compares closely with a cnidarian asexual reproduction mode. Tracking this morphological change from Late Ediacaran to the Miaolingian provides a unique glimpse into how a primeval animal group responded during the Cambrian Explosion.
Disparity, Decimation and the Cambrian "explosion": Comparison of Early Cambrian and Present Faunal Communities with Emphasis on Velvet Worms (Onychophora).

Abstract:The controversy about a Cambrian "explosion" of morphological disparity (followed by decimation), cladogenesis and fossilization is of central importance for the history of life. This paper revisits the controversy (with emphasis in onychophorans, which include emblematic organisms such as Hallucigenia), presents new data about the Chengjiang (Cambrian of China) faunal community and compares it and the Burgess Shale (Cambrian of Canada) with an ecologically similar but modern tropical marine site where onychophorans are absent, and with a modern neotropical terrestrial onychophoran community. Biovolume was estimated from material collected in Costa Rica and morphometric measurements were made on enlarged images of fossils. Cambrian tropical mudflats were characterized by the adaptive radiation of two contrasting groups: the vagile arthropods and the sessile poriferans. Arthropods were later replaced as the dominant benthic taxon by polychaetes. Vagility and the exoskeleton may explain the success of arthropods from the Cambrian to the modern marine and terrestrial communities, both in population and biovolume. Food ecological displacement was apparent in the B. Shale, but not in Chengjiang or the terrestrial community. When only hard parts were preserved, marine and terrestrial fossil deposits of tropical origin are even less representative than deposits produced by temperate taxa, Chengjiang being an exception. Nutrient limitations might explain why deposit feeding is less important in terrestrial onychophoran communities, where carnivory, scavenging and omnivory (associated with high motility and life over the substrate) became more important. Fossil morphometry supports the interpretation of "lobopod animals" as onychophorans, whose abundance in Chengjiang was equal to their abundance in modern communities. The extinction of marine onychophorans may reflect domination of the infaunal habitat by polychaetes. We conclude that (1) a mature ecological community structure was generalized during the Cambrian, and even biodiversity and equitability indices were surprisingly close to modern values; (2) the morphological diversity and geographic distribution of onychophorans indicate a significant pre-Cambrian evolutionary history which does not support the "explosion" hypothesis; (3) disparity among phyla was not as important as the explosion-decimation model predicts, but in the case of onychophorans, disparity within the phylum was greater than it is today and its reduction may have been associated with migration into the sediment when large predators evolved.
The C-value enigma and timing of the Cambrian explosion

Abstract:The Cambrian explosion is a grand challenge to science today and involves multidisciplinary study. This event is generally believed as a result of genetic innovations, environmental factors and ecological interactions, even though there are many conflicts on nature and timing of metazoan origins. The crux of the matter is that an entire roadmap of the evolution is missing to discern the biological complexity transition and to evaluate the critical role of the Cambrian explosion in the overall evolutionary context. Here we calculate the time of the Cambrian explosion by an innovative and accurate "C-value clock"; our result (560 million years ago) quite fits the fossil records. We clarify that the intrinsic reason of genome evolution determined the Cambrian explosion. A general formula for evaluating genome size of different species has been found, by which major questions of the C-value enigma can be solved and the genome size evolution can be illustrated. The Cambrian explosion is essentially a major transition of biological complexity, which corresponds to a turning point in genome size evolution. The observed maximum prokaryotic complexity is just a relic of the Cambrian explosion and it is supervised by the maximum information storage capability in the observed universe. Our results open a new prospect of studying metazoan origins and molecular evolution.

Abstract:The Cambrian “explosion” is a unique episode in Earth history, when essentially all the animal phyla first appear in the fossil record. A variety of environmental, developmental (genetic), and ecological explanations for this complex and somewhat protracted event are reviewed, with a focus on how well each explains the observed increases in disparity and diversity, the time of onset of the radiation, its duration, and its uniqueness. The increase in disparity (the origin of the phyla) and diversity are best understood as being the result of the interplay of the combinatorial bilaterian developmental system and the increase in the number of needs the first bilaterians had to meet as complex ecological interactions developed. The time of onset is constrained by the evolution of the environment, whereas its duration appears to be controlled primarily by rates of developmental innovation. The uniqueness of the event is either due to ensuing developmental limitation, to ecological saturation, or simply to the exhaustion of ecologically viable morphologies that could be produced by the nascent bilaterian developmental system.

Abstract:The emergence of complex patterns of organization close to the Cambrian boundary is known to have happened over a (geologically) short period of time. It involved the rapid diversification of body plans and stands as one of the major transitions in evolution. How it took place is a controversial issue. Here we explore this problem by considering a simple model of pattern formation in multicellular organisms. By modeling gene network-based morphogenesis and its evolution through adaptive walks, we explore the question of how combinatorial explosions might have been actually involved in the Cambrian event. Here we show that a small amount of genetic complexity including both gene regulation and cell-cell signaling allows one to generate an extraordinary repertoire of stable spatial patterns of gene expression compatible with observed anteroposterior patterns in early development of metazoans. The consequences for the understanding of the tempo and mode of the Cambrian event are outlined.

Abstract:A finer record of biodiversity We have pressing, human-generated reasons to explore the influence of environmental change on biodiversity. Looking into the past can not only inform our understanding of this relationship but also help us to understand current change. Paleontological records depend on fossil availability and predictive modeling, however, and thus tend to give us a picture with large temporal jumps, millions of years wide. Such a scale makes it difficult to truly understand the action of environmental forces on ecological processes. Enabled by a supercomputer, Fan et al. used machine learning to analyze a large marine Paleozoic dataset, creating a record with time intervals of only ∼26,000 years (see the Perspective by Wagner). Abstract:The Cambrian explosion has long been a basic research frontier that concerns many scientific fields.Here we discuss the cause-effect links of the Cambrian explosion on the basis of first appearances of animal phyla in the fossil record,divergence time,environmental changes,Gene Regulatory Networks,and ecological feedbacks.The first appearances of phyla in the fossil record are obviously diachronous but relatively abrupt,concentrated in the first three stages of the Cambrian period(541–514 Ma).The actual divergence time may be deep or shallow.Since the gene regulatory networks(GRNs)that control the development of metazoans were in place before the divergence,the establishment of GRNs is necessary but insufficient for the Cambrian explosion.Thus the Cambrian explosion required environmental triggers.Nutrient availability,oxygenation,and change of seawater composition were potential environmental triggers.The nutrient input,e.g.,the phosphorus enrichment in the environment,would cause excess primary production,but it is not directly linked with diversity or disparity.Further increase of oxygen level and change of seawater composition during the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition were probably crucial environmental factors that caused the Cambrian explosion,but more detailed geochemical data are required.Many researchers prefer that the Cambrian explosion is an ecological phenomenon,that is,the unprecedented ecological success of metazoans during the Early Cambrian,but ecological effects need diverse and abundant animals.Therefore,the establishment of the ecological complexity among animals,and between animals and environments,is a consequence rather than a cause of the Cambrian explosion.It is no doubt that positive ecological feedbacks could facilitate the increase of biodiversity.In a word,the Cambrian explosion happened when environmental changes crossed critical thresholds,led to the initial formation of the metazoan-dominated ecosystem through a series of knock-on ecological processes,i.e.,"ecological snowball"effects.

Abstract:The relationship between the Earth environment and the biotic explosion in early Cambrian (ca.541 -5 10,Ma) is one top geobiological issue.Here,we systematically summarized three major hypotheses for the relationship between the atmosphere-ocean oxygen level and the biotic evolution in early Cambrian,including that (1)increasing oxygenation of at-mosphere and ocean caused the Cambrian explosion,(2)the emergence and evolution of lives resulted in oxygenation of atmosphere and ocean,(3)the atmosphere-ocean oxygen level and the evolution of lives are not interrelated.Although each hypothesis is supported by specific evidences,these hypotheses show significantly inconsistent with partial ocean chemistry records in early Cambrian and investigations of lives in modern ocean analogues.In addition,the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of early Cambrian life evolution is not considered in these hypotheses.By synthesizing these major hypotheses with available data on Cambrian tectonic activities,terrestrial fluxes,ocean chemistry and life evolution patterns,we dis-cussed the possible relationship between the Earth environment and the biotic radiation in early Cambrian.We found that an interactions and co-evolution relationship instead of those simple unidirectional relationships emphasized by above three hypotheses should exist between the Earth environment and the biotic radiation in early Cambrian.
THE ORIGIN AND CAMBRIAN EXPLOSION OF ANIMALS:FOSSIL EVIDENCES FROM CHINA

Abstract:Earth experienced major biological and environmental revolutions during the Precambrian Cambrian transitional interval,notably,the advent and successive Cambrian explosion of animals following the termination of an extreme "Snowball Earth" before 635 Ma.In past 30 years,numerous exquisitely preserved fossil biotas (e.g.the Weng’an and Chengjiang biotas) have been discovered from the well-developed and-exposed sedimentary successions of South China,offering an unsurpassed opportunity to decipher the process of the origin and Cambrian explosion of animals.The present paper briefly reviewed all these fossil biotas,their preservations and environments.Except for the Cambrian Chengjiang,Guanshan and Kaili faunas with the characteristic "Burgess Shale-type" preservation,the following fossil Lagerstttten are unique taphonomic windows,including:1) the early Ediacaran Weng’an biota with the "Doushantuo-type" preservation of phosphatised embryos;2) the early Ediacaran silicified acritarchs and embryos from the Doushantuo cherts;3) the Ediacaran Lantian,Miaohe,Wenghui and Wulingshan biotas with the "Miaohe-type" preservation of carbonaceous imprints of macroscopic fossils;4) the late Ediacaran Gaojiashan biota with large pyritized tubular fossils;5) the Kuanchuanpu fauna with preservation of phosphatised embryos and larvae;and 6) the early Cambrian "Niutitang-type" sponge faunas in black shales.Integrated analyses of all biotas in space and time,we conclude that 1) no unambiguous animal fossils before Ediacaran;2) animal life experienced episodic four radiations and four extinctions across the Precambrian Cambrian transitional interval.The earliest animals emerged as cryptic microfauna during the early Ediacaran,and large complex animals exemplified by the Ediacaran and Gaojiashan biotas appearred during the late Ediacaran.The early Cambrian Meishucun fauna with various small shelly fossils represents the first explosive radiation of bilaterians and biomineralization of animals.The morphospace and ecospace of animals reached their peaks during the Qiongzhusian (～520 Ma) which are evidenced by numerous exquisitely preserved Cambrian biotas,such as the Chengjiang fauan and sponge faunas.In addition,fossils evidence from South China indicates that animals show an onshore-offshore pattern during their early evolution,and first colonization of animals occurred in the Qiongzhusian.

Abstract:Cambrian Explosionis one of the most important events in the history of biological evolution,unparalleled diverse fossil fauna appeared abruptly in an interval not more than 20 million years at the beginning of the Cambrian.This event laid the foundation for the evolution of Phanerozoic organisms.It is generally accepted that the soft-bodied Ediacara biota is afailedexperiment at the evolution of life,and there is no clear genetic relationship with the Phanerozoic organisms.Based on a comprehensive review of Neoproterozoic tubular fossil records,especialy on a more systematic identification and morphological restoration of a large number of tubular animal fossils in the Gaojiashan biota such as Cloudina,Sinotubulites,Conotubus,Gaojiashania,Shaanxilithes,and possibly Anabarites.It is proposed that in the Ediacaran Period,corresponding to the evolution of the typical Ediacaran soft-bodied biota,there was a large radiation of tubular animals in the evolutionary history of early lifes at the end of late Neoproterozoic.They are complex in morpho-types,diverse in bodyplans,varied in sizes and lifestyles,representing a major biological innovation in Earth′s life,some of which have been pioneers of the Cambrian Evolutionary Fauna.In this paper,the biodivercification event is called theTubular animal radiation,which opens the prologue of the evolution of Phanerozoic life.
