Abstract:Building on the theory of ecological imperialism in the context of the Peruvian guano boom, this analysis explores the metabolic rift in the human relation to external nature and the corresponding corporeal rift in the destruction of human bodily existence. Guano capitalists robbed Peru of the manure deposited by seabirds, while British imperialism introduced a system of racialized expropriation (the ‘coolie trade'), referred to by Karl Marx as ‘worse than slavery.’ Previous failures to understand this historical tragedy were due to the legal forms adopted, which categorized as semi-free labor what was in fact the social murder of the workers.

Abstract:In international academia,there are two interpretations-one optimistic and one pessimistic——about the rise of China.Against the background of the discourse on China's rise,the author analyzes the past,present,and characteristics of Chinese-African relations from the perspective of continuity and change.The author argues that diplomatic leadership established the foundation for Chinese-African relations,with equality as the soul,mutual benefits as the core essence,and the standardization mechanism as the guarantee for sustainable development.Finally,the author criticizes three popular views about Chinese-African relations and points out the new challenges facing Chinese-African cooperation.

Abstract:This study explores the largely neglected long-term effect of cultural brokerage on local community cultures and international business. We argue that communities with a rich history of cross-cultural exchange between locals and foreigners developed a local culture that continues to influence international business today. Drawing on a matched sample of 68 colonial cities and 80 neighboring cities in China, we connect local variation in central domains of cultural brokerage—trade and missionary activities in the late 19th and early 20th century—with foreign production today. Our results demonstrate the long-term implications of socially-built cultural capacities on local strategies of action and challenge the dominant legalistic approach in colonial heritage research.

Abstract:The institutional coauthorships between LAC and China were fertilized through their participation in global leadership related projects. The institutions in each region diverged from their initial position: LAC to the periphery and China to the center. Institutional communities have become more compact and their links with external communities have diminished. The entry of new institutions has increased, especially in the last six years. Chinese institutions exhibited at the time a leading role as social bridges. A Colombian institution later took over this role. Australia is consolidating its position as the geography with the most intermediary institutions.

Abstract:At least officially, the Chinese government showed little to no interest in the Asia-Pacific region. We also know very little about Chinese state interference except for attempts to fight against piracy in the Southeast Asian waters. This article will consequently address and survey a neglected aspect of China’s maritime history, namely China’s (indirect) relationship with the Viceroyalty of Peru, its capital Lima (= Ciudad de los Reyes), and its port of Callao, and with the ‘silver centre’ in the Spanish Indies—the Villa Imperial (= Potosí), in the hinterlands of the Viceroyalty of Peru. These active, but at first sight less obvious and frequently neglected parts of the trans-Pacific trade, I would like to call ‘the other New World’. The article introduces a variety of micro-historical bottom-up insights into connections between two places that at first sight seem related to each other only through the shipments of huge quantities of silver from the Cerro Rico in Potosí via Acapulco and Manila to China, in exchange for Chinese silks and porcelains, looking specifically at some micro networks, contraband, informal, accidental, and undesired exchanges. It offers preliminary results and a general framework and survey of trade connections, routes and information on the variety of Chinese products that reached Peru.

Abstract:Abolition forced planters in the post-Civil War US South to consider new sources and forms of labor. Some looked to Spanish America for answers. Cuba had long played a prominent role in the American imagination because of its proximity, geostrategic location, and potential as a slave state prior to the Civil War. Even as the United States embraced abolition and Cuba maintained slavery, the island presented Southern planters with potential labor solutions. Cuban elites had been using male Chinese indentured workers (“coolies” or colonos asiáticos ) to supplement slave labor and delay the rise of free labor since 1847. Planters in coastal Peru similarly embraced Chinese indentured labor in 1849 as abolition neared. Before the Civil War, Southerners generally had noted these developments with anxiety, fearing that coolies were morally corrupt and detrimental to slavery. However, for many, these concerns receded once legal slavery ended. Planters wanted cheap exploitable labor, which coolies appeared to offer. Thus, during Reconstruction, Southern elites, especially in Louisiana, attempted to use Chinese indentured workers to minimize changes in labor relations.

Abstract:In the latest 30 years of studies of Chinese Scholars on Sino-African relations show:the origin of studies on Sino-African relations,main Achievements of the studies,references materials,normal and internal publications and etc.The achievements about the studies on ancient transportation history(including histories of African Chinese and overseas Chinese) between China and Africa are abundant.Chinese Studies on contemporary African studies still face with great challengers for the reasons of rapid development of Sino-African cooperation and strong reflection from west on Sino-African relations.Chinese Scholars should promote and improve the equality of studies on Africa.The author expresses his optimistic future on studies of Sino-African relations with the new development of cooperations between China and Africa.

Abstract:In the past ten years, trade and economic relations between China and Latin America have seen fast development. Latin America has not only become an important trading partner for China, but also the main destination for Chinese investments and the principal overseas contract market of China. In the current international economic environment, and with regards to the new circumstances faced by Chinese and Latin American economy, investment, trade and finance have become the three “engines” boosting Sino-Latin American cooperation more and more significantly. China’s investment in Latin America is not only guided by policies and mechanisms (planning and guidance), but also supported by abundant capital (cooperation fund), as well as the three-party cooperation framework between the Chinese government, quasi-official organizations and enterprises. As Chinese enterprises “go global” and invest in Latin America, they should make the necessary preparations as well as engage in necessary risk prevention.

Abstract:This is a historical survey on the evolution of the Chinese community in Jamaica. Giving a general review of the present study of the subject, the author tries to probe the origin, adaptation, integration and identification of the Chinese in Jamaica. Exploring the Chinese transition from agricultural laborers to petty entrepreneurs, the author uses community institutions to frame his argument and puts a special emphasis on the role of the Chinese Benevolence Society in the development of the community. Dealing with the economic activities and social life of the Chinese, the author argues that the Chinese in Jamaica tried to get involved in the activities of local society and the process of integration was approaching to the end when Jamaica won its independence in 1962.
The Impact of Labor Standards on International Trade: A Chinese Perspective

Abstract:This paper first compiles some of the representative literature exploring the relationship between labor standards and international trade, and explores the different attitudes of developed and developing countries on the linkage between labor standards and international trade, and on this basis, analyzes the impact of labor standards on international trade based on China's perspective. The paper argues that labor standards, which are predominantly promoted by Western countries with a focus on workers rights, have a dual nature and exert various effects on the development of international trade. It is not desirable for Chinese enterprises to take a passive attitude of resistance in the face of challenges. Only by implementing social responsibility management into all levels of the enterprise organization structure, transforming the certification pressure into competitive power, and changing the one-sided view of foreign countries on China's labor standards can we win a favorable position in the fierce international competition and a greater space for the development of Chinese enterprises.

Abstract:The rapid development of the international mineral trade has provided a solid material foundation for economic developments worldwide. Accompanying mineral international trade, there is a huge amount of carbon emission transferred from importing countries to exporting countries, which masks the true distribution of global carbon emission and blurs the lines about the responsibility for preserving the environment. Aiming to explore the embodied carbon emissions, we construct an embodied carbon emissions network of copper concentrates and refined copper international trade (ECCR) for each year during the sample period from 2007 to 2014. We analyze structure features of ECCR international trade. There exists a large amount of potential transfer of carbon emissions. The external dependency on copper concentrates of China is not so high. The trade volume shows that China, Germany and the United States are net importers, Chile, Peru and Zambia are net exporters. Moreover, the trade volumes of main countries change within a narrow range. Considering that the changes of ECCR international trade, energy policies or emergencies are main factors to resources-oriented countries, sudden global economic events are main factors to importers. Combined with the economy of every country, we also analyze the embodied carbon intensity, which are significantly different of distinct type’s countries. Furthermore, the evolution rule of embodied carbon intensity of some developed countries is similar to some developing countries.

Abstract:The Analects of Confucius are classic works of ancient Chinese Confucian school, which contains a lot of culture-loaded words. And James Legge, Gu Hongming and Arthur Walley’s English translation of Analects is widely spread and highly recognized. Therefore, this paper will take Lectures on China’s Traditional Political Thoughts as an example to study the translation of culture-loaded words in three translated versions of The Analects of Confucius from the eco perspective. Relying on the Chinese ideological and cultural terminology Library under the project of “Chinese ideological and cultural terminology communication project”, this paper mainly combs and sums up the culture-loaded words in The Analects of Confucius respectively translated by James Legge, Gu Hongming, Arthur Waley. Based on the perspective of eco translatology, this paper makes a comparative study on translation methods of different schools from the perspectives of language, culture and communication, so as to improve the academic preciseness and accuracy of the translation.

Abstract:The Chinese version of Writing Culture, which has had far-reaching influence over the past two decades, is to be published. The translator tries to summarize the development of ethnography in the three periods so as to help readers understand the academic status of this book in the evolution process from amateur ethnography to scientific ethnography and to rethinking ethnography. This paper also introduces the compiling process of this book from an academic seminar to a finished colloquia, and specially recommends Robert Thornton's paper Classification as Rhetorical Trope in Ethnographic Writing that is missed in the colloquia.
Ancient Chinese economic thought and the French academic context of the 1930s: Li Zhaoyi’s doctoral thesis

Abstract:The article examines the contribution of the Chinese researcher of the first half of the 20th century Li Zhaoyi to the study of the impact of ancient Chinese thought on the economic doctrine of the French physiocrats. An interpretation of the schools of Taoism, Confucianism and Legalism as carriers of the idea of natural law, which became fundamental for physiocrats, is highlighted as a key feature of Li Zhaoyi’s academic concept. The interpretation of the Chinese teachings on morality, ritual, the way-Tao, and the law-Fa as different understandings of natural law was aimed at demonstrating the Chinese influence on the European thought of the Enlightenment. A distinctive feature of Li Zhaoyi’s research was the use of European concepts, primarily anarchism and individualism, to discuss the specifics of ancient Chinese thought through comparisons with the ideas of J.J. Rousseau, P.A. Kropotkin, M.A. Bakunin, M. Stirner. The increasing attention to the legacy of Li Zhaoyi in modern China is due to the growing interest in the problem of the recognition of Chinese concepts by the global academic community. Li Zhaoyi’s name was mentioned by well-known economist J.A. Schumpeter. The influence on the French physiocrats was a rare case of China’s contribution to the development of world economic science that is expected to provide inspiration for future intercultural interactions. It is concluded that the official policy of introducing “philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics” to the outside world will help to maintain interest in the history of China’s influence on European thought.

Abstract:The 'Going Out' strategy that China began in 1999 escalated to a global level with the 'Belt and Road Initiative' in 2013. However, the lack of a clear international framework for corporate accountability accentuates the risks of human rights' affectation by Chinese corporations, considering their controversial performance in Latin America. This article engages with the scholarly framework of international norm localization to analyze the enactment of Chinese business and human rights standards and their concrete application. This assessment relies on an extensive review of academic and policy research and the analysis of social conflicts around one of the largest copper mines in the region, Las Bambas, located in the highlands of Peru. The case shows that the main problem is not the lack of incorporation of business and human rights standards into national laws and the guidelines of companies' home regulators, but the different ways they are interpreted by social actors on the ground. Local communities are not passive receptors of those norms but norm makers who appropriate them and provide new meanings in line with their self-determination. Chinese and national authorities and firms, therefore, need to engage with those norms from the perspective of local people.

Abstract:China’s foreign policy has exerted some influence on the development of Latin America cooperatively as communication between the two sides deepens. This paper first analyzes the foundations of China-Latin America cooperation from internal and external factors. The internal factors mainly refer to China and Latin America’s willingness and choice tendency. External ones are considered from factors outside the two sides, such as the extra-regional country and historical factors. Secondly, this essay will detailedly illustrate their overall cooperation through four fields: economics, politics, culture, and the new development model - green development, which are also the essential manifestations of China’s foreign policy in affecting international politics in Latin America. Lastly, this essay will have a concise conclusion: China interacts with Latin American countries through cooperation, which also means that cooperation is the main form of interaction and the core of China’s foreign policy towards Latin America.
