Abstract:A novel wireless and implantable neural modulation device called NanoNeuroRFID is introduced. Neuronal recording via this device is based on direct magnetic field detection and wireless data communication with external receiver is through electromagnetic waves. Conventional state-of-the-art antennas have a size of greater than one-tenth of the wavelength and are so massive for brain implantation. Magnetoelectric (ME) antenna, the core component of the NanoNeuroRFID, however, is an acoustically actuated ultra-compact antenna and could be thousands of times smaller than wavelength of working frequency [7]. It is shown that low frequency and low loss brain implantation is feasible with a 100×200 µm 2 ME antenna and as a result, Path Loss (PL) of a certain channel from Grey Matter to external scalp is reduced substantially compared to using a commensurate-size conventional antenna which has a much higher operational frequency.
