Abstract:In the paper, we investigate internal states on involutive monoidal t-norm based algebras, which are algebraic semantics of the logic of left-continuous t-norms with an involutive negation and their residua. The resulting class of algebras will be called IMTL-algebras with internal states or state IMTL-algebras. First, we discuss some properties of internal states and obtain relationships between states and internal states on IMTL-algebras. Moreover, we prove that if an IMTL-algebra L is termwise equivalent to an MV-algebra, then an internal state on L taken in the IMTL-setup coincides with the notion of an internal state in the MV-setup. Secondly, we introduce and characterize maximal state filters and prime state filters in state IMTL-algebras. Using them, we prove that subdirect representation theorems of pre-simple state IMTL-algebras and state pre-linear state IMTL-algebras. Furthermore, we characterize subdirectly irreducible state IMTL-algebras, which is faithful. Finally, studying some topological structures on the set Spec(tau)[L] of all prime state filters and the set Max(tau)[L] of all maximal state filters in a state IMTL-algebra, respectively, we conclude that Spec(tau)[L] is a compact T-0 topological space and Max(tau)[L] is a compact Hausdorff topological space. In particular, we introduce pure state filters in state IMTL-algebras and characterize stable open sets in Spec(tau)[L]. Also, we obtain that Spec(tau)[L] with the stable topology is a compact topological space but not T-0.

Abstract:Among the class of residuated fuzzy logics, a few of them have been shown to have standard completeness both for propositional and predicate calculus, like Gödel, NM and monoidal t-norm-based logic systems. In this paper, a new residuated logic NMG, which aims at capturing the tautologies of a class of ordinal sum t-norms and their residua, is introduced and its standard completeness both for propositional calculus and for predicate calculus are proved.

Abstract:A schematic extension NMŁ of F.Esteva and L.Godo's Logic MTL is introduced in this paper. Based on a new left-continuous but discontinuous t-norm, which was proposed by S.Jenei and can be regarded as a kind of distorted nilpotent minimum, the semantics of NMŁ is interpreted and the standard completeness theorem of NMŁ is proved. The fact that the maximum and the minimum are definable from the negation and implication in NMŁ and NM is discovered, which also leads to a modification of the NM axiom system.

Abstract:We investigate involutive commutative residuated lattices without unit, which are commutative residuated lattice-ordered semigroups enriched with a unary involutive negation operator. The logic of this structure is discussed and the Genzten-style sequent calculus of it is presented. Moreover, we prove the decidability of this logic.

Abstract:Monotonicity-based inference is a fundamental notion in the logical semantics of natural language, and also in logic in general. Starting in generalized quantifier theory, we distinguish three senses of the notion, study their relations, and use these to connect monotonicity to logics of model change. At the end we return to natural language and consider monotonicity inference in linguistic settings with vocabulary for various forms of change. While we mostly raise issues in this paper, we do make a number of new observations backing up our distinctions.

Abstract:We make a probabilistic analysis related to some inference rules which play an important role in nonmonotonic reasoning. In a coherence-based setting, we study the extensions of a probability assessment defined on $n$ conditional events to their quasi conjunction, and by exploiting duality, to their quasi disjunction. The lower and upper bounds coincide with some well known t-norms and t-conorms: minimum, product, Lukasiewicz, and Hamacher t-norms and their dual t-conorms. On this basis we obtain Quasi And and Quasi Or rules. These are rules for which any finite family of conditional events p-entails the associated quasi conjunction and quasi disjunction. We examine some cases of logical dependencies, and we study the relations among coherence, inclusion for conditional events, and p-entailment. We also consider the Or rule, where quasi conjunction and quasi disjunction of premises coincide with the conclusion. We analyze further aspects of quasi conjunction and quasi disjunction, by computing probabilistic bounds on premises from bounds on conclusions. Finally, we consider biconditional events, and we introduce the notion of an $n$-conditional event. Then we give a probabilistic interpretation for a generalized Loop rule. In an appendix we provide explicit expressions for the Hamacher t-norm and t-conorm in the unitary hypercube.

Abstract:By introducing a new family of partitions into the n-cube [0,1]n, the problem of characterizing truth tables of formulas in the nilpotent minimum logic is solved and their normal forms are presented. So far, only this kind of fuzzy truth functions have normal forms among all fuzzy propositional calculi which are based on left-continuous but discontinuous t-norm.

Abstract:Well-known principles of induction include monotone induction and different sorts of non-monotone induction such as inflationary induction, induction over well-founded sets and iterated induction. In this work, we define a logic formalizing induction over well-founded sets and monotone and iterated induction. Just as the principle of positive induction has been formalized in FO(LFP), and the principle of inflationary induction has been formalized in FO(IFP), this paper formalizes the principle of iterated induction in a new logic for Non-Monotone Inductive Definitions (ID-logic). The semantics of the logic is strongly influenced by the well-founded semantics of logic programming. Our main result concerns the modularity properties of inductive definitions in ID-logic. Specifically, we formulate conditions under which a simultaneous definition $\D$ of several relations is logically equivalent to a conjunction of smaller definitions $\D_1 \land ... \land \D_n$ with disjoint sets of defined predicates. The difficulty of the result comes from the fact that predicates $P_i$ and $P_j$ defined in $\D_i$ and $\D_j$, respectively, may be mutually connected by simultaneous induction. Since logic programming and abductive logic programming under well-founded semantics are proper fragments of our logic, our modularity results are applicable there as well.
Normal proofs and tableaux for the Font-Rius tetravalent modal logic

Abstract:Tetravalent modal logic (T ML) was introduced by Font and Rius in 2000; and it is an expansion of the Belnap-Dunn four{valued logic FOUR, a logical system that is well{known for the many applications it has been found in several fields. Besides, T ML is the logic that preserve degrees of truth with respect to Monteiro's tetravalent modal algebras. Among other things, Font and Rius showed that T ML has a strongly adequate sequent system, but unfortunately this system does not enjoy the cut-elimination property. However, in [16], it was presented a sequent system for T ML with the cut{elimination property. Besides, in this same work, it was also presented a sound and complete natural deduction system for this logic. In the present work, we continue with the study of T ML under a proof-theoretic perspective. In first place, we show that the natural deduction system given in [16] admits a normalization theorem. In second place, taking advantage of the contrapositive implication for the tetravalent modal algebras introduced in [17], we define a decidable tableau system adequate to check validity in the logic T ML. Finally, we provide a sound and complete tableau system for T ML in the original language.These two tableau systems constitute new (proof-theoretic) decision procedures for checking validity in the variety of tetravalent modal algebras.

Abstract:In [Ban97] a connection among rough sets (in particular, pre-rough algebras) and three-valued Łukasiewicz logic Ł3 is pointed out. In this paper we present a temporal like semantics for Nilpotent Minimum logic NM ([Fod95, EG01]), in which the logic of every instant is given by Ł3: a completeness theorem will be shown. This is the prosecution of the work initiated in [AGM08] and [ABM09], in which the authors construct a temporal semantics for the many-valued logics of Gödel ([Göd32], [Dum59]) and Basic Logic ([Háj98]).

Abstract:Lawvere showed that generalised metric spaces are categories enriched over $[0, \infty]$, the quantale of the positive extended reals. The statement of enrichment is a quantitative analogue of being a preorder. Towards seeking a logic for quantitative metric reasoning, we investigate three $[0,\infty]$-valued propositional logics over the Lawvere quantale. The basic logical connectives shared by all three logics are those that can be interpreted in any quantale, viz finite conjunctions and disjunctions, tensor (addition for the Lawvere quantale) and linear implication (here a truncated subtraction); to these we add, in turn, the constant $1$ to express integer values, and scalar multiplication by a non-negative real to express general affine combinations. Quantitative equational logic can be interpreted in the third logic if we allow inference systems instead of axiomatic systems. For each of these logics we develop a natural deduction system which we prove to be decidably complete w.r.t. the quantale-valued semantics. The heart of the completeness proof makes use of the Motzkin transposition theorem. Consistency is also decidable; the proof makes use of Fourier-Motzkin elimination of linear inequalities. Strong completeness does not hold in general, even (as is known) for theories over finitely-many propositional variables; indeed even an approximate form of strong completeness in the sense of Pavelka or Ben Yaacov -- provability up to arbitrary precision -- does not hold. However, we can show it for theories axiomatized by a (not necessarily finite) set of judgements in normal form over a finite set of propositional variables when we restrict to models that do not map variables to $\infty$; the proof uses Hurwicz's general form of the Farkas' Lemma.

On rearrangement inequalities for T-norm logics

Abstract:The rearrangement inequality states that the sum of products of permutations of 2 sequences of real numbers are maximized when the terms are similarly ordered and minimized when the terms are ordered in opposite order. We show that similar inequalities exist for multi-valued logic with the multiplication and addition operation replaced with various T-norms and T-conorms respectively. For instance, we show that the rearrangement inequality holds when the T-norms and T-conorms are derived from Archimedean copulas.

Abstract:There are standard logics DTC, TC, and LFP capturing the complexity classes L, NL, and P on ordered structures, respectively. In [4] we have shown that LFP_{inv}, the ``order-invariant least fixed-point logic LFP,'' captures P (on all finite structures) if and only if there is a listing of the P subsets of the set TAUT of propositional tautologies. We are able to extend the result to listings of the L-subsets (NL-subsets) of TAUT and the logic DTC_{inv} (TC_{inv}). As a byproduct we get that LFP_{inv} captures P if DTC_{inv} captures L. Furthermore, we show that the existence of a listing of the L-subsets of TAUT is equivalent to the existence of an almost space optimal algorithm for TAUT. To obtain this result we have to derive a space version of a theorem of Levin on optimal inverters.

Abstract:To formalize patterns of information increase and decrease, Van Benthem (1996) proposed modal information logic (MIL), a modal logic over partial orders. In MIL, points are interpreted as information states and least upper bounds, when existent, as informational sums. A natural counterpart to this logic is the modal logic of minimal upper bounds (MIN), interpreting minimal, rather than least, upper bounds as informational sums. This paper presents the logic MIN, and in the main result, it is shown that the modal language cannot distinguish the two interpretations: a formula is valid in MIN if and only if it is valid in MIL. Leveraging the work of [11], as corollaries, an axiomatization of MIN and a proof of decidability are obtained.

Abstract:Nilpotent minimum algebras (NM-algebras) are algebraic counterpart of a formal deductive system where conjunction is modeled by the nilpotent minimum t-norm, a logic also independently introduced by Guo-Jun Wang in the mid 1990s. Such algebras are to this logic just what Boolean algebras are to the classical propositional logic. In this paper, by introducing respectively the Stone topology and a three-valued fuzzy Stone topology on the set of all maximal filters in an NM-algebra, we first establish two analogues for an NM-algebra of the well-known Stone representation theorem for a Boolean algebra, which state that the Boolean skeleton of an NM-algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of all clopen subsets of its Stone space and the three-valued skeleton is isomorphic to the algebra of all clopen fuzzy subsets of its three-valued fuzzy Stone space, respectively. Then we introduce the notions of Boolean filter and of three-valued filter in an NM-algebra, and finally we prove that three-valued filters and closed subsets of the Stone space of an NM-algebra are in one-to-one correspondence and Boolean filters uniquely correspond to closed subsets of the subspace consisting of all ultrafilters.

Abstract:<p>MLL proof equivalence is the problem of deciding whether two proofs inmultiplicative linear logic are related by a series of inference permutations.It is also known as the word problem for star-autonomous categories. Previouswork has shown the problem to be equivalent to a rewiring problem on proofnets, which are not canonical for full MLL due to the presence of the twounits. Drawing from recent work on reconfiguration problems, in this paper itis shown that MLL proof equivalence is PSPACE-complete, using a reduction fromNondeterministic Constraint Logic. An important consequence of the result isthat the existence of a satisfactory notion of proof nets for MLL with units isruled out (under current complexity assumptions). The PSPACE-hardness resultextends to equivalence of normal forms in MELL without units, where theweakening rule for the exponentials induces a similar rewiring problem.</p>

Abstract:A modal nonmonotonic logic is presented based on an experiential modal semantics on typicality and exception. The syntactic and semantics of modal nonmonotonic logic are provided and the completeness theorem and the theorems relating it to major nonmonotonic logics are proved. It directly formalizes the intuition of nonmonotonic reasoning. Among other things, it provides us a first-order extension of default logic and autoepistemic logic, and simultaneously has the capability of circumscription to infer universal statement. It has important applications in logic programming and deductive data base. As a result, it provides a uniform basis for various nonmonotonic logics, from which the correspondent relationship among major nonmonotonic logics can coincide.
