Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact silicon polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted contradirectional couplers (GACCs). Over 30-dB extinction ratios and less than 1-dB insertion losses are achieved for both polarizations. The proposed PBS exhibits tolerance in width variation, and the polarization extinction ratios remain higher than 20 dB for both polarizations when the width variation is adjusted from + 10 to -10 nm. Benefiting from the enhanced coupling by the GACCs, the polarization extinction ratio can be kept higher than 15 dB and the insertion loss is lower than 2 dB for both polarizations when the coupling length varies from 30.96 to 13.76 μm.

Abstract:A high-performance silicon-based polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally by using an improved structure with cascaded bent directional couplers. The measured extinction ratio (ER) is >35dB and the excess losses (EL) is <0.35dB around the central wavelength for both polarizations. The present PBS has a compact footprint of similar to 6.9 x 20 mu m(2). The measured bandwidths for an ER of >20dB, >25dB and >30dB are similar to 135nm, similar to 95nm and similar to 70nm, respectively, while the measured EL is <1dB and <0.5dB in a bandwidth of similar to 140nm and similar to 85nm, respectively. The fabrication tolerance of the core-width variation is as large as +/- 40nm, which makes the fabrication very easy. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A novel polarisation beam splitter (PBS) with a high extinction ratio in a broad band has been proposed and realised by cascading a bent directional coupler and a low-loss transverse-magnetic (TM)-pass polariser based on a subwavelength grating. The realised PBS has a footprint as small as 3 x 22.5 mu m, a high extinction ratio (> 20 dB) and a low excess loss (similar to 1 dB) are obtained over a broad band of similar to 60 nm for both transverse-electric and TM polarisations.

Abstract:Compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted couplers is proposed by utilizing contra-directional coupling between two corrugated strip waveguides. The co-directional coupling in the device is greatly suppressed by the designed asymmetric structure. The phase matching condition is only satisfied for TE polarization at the central wavelength of 1550 nm by a spatially periodic refractive-index perturbation. Due to the contra-directional coupling, the device breaks the limit of the precise control of the coupling strength and length. The simulation results show that the presented PBS, with a coupling length of only 19 μm, has a broad working bandwidth (∼40 nm) for a crosstalk below -12 dB. A large fabrication tolerance (±40 nm) for the waveguide width is also achieved.

Abstract:A polarization beam splitter (PBS) is proposed and realized for silicon photonic integrated circuits with a 340-nm-thick silicon core layer by introducing an asymmetric directional coupler (ADC), which consists of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanowire and a subwavelength grating (SWG) waveguide. The SWG is introduced to provide an optical waveguide which has much higher birefringence than a regular 340-nm-thick SOI nanowire, so that it is possible to make the phase-matching condition satisfied for TE polarization only in the present design when the waveguide dimensions are optimized. Meanwhile, there is a significant phase mismatching for TM polarization automatically. In this way, the present ADC enables strong polarization selectivity to realize a PBS that separates TE and TM polarizations to the cross and through ports, respectively. The realized PBS has a length of similar to 2 mu m for the coupling region. For the fabricated PBS, the extinction ratio (ER) is 15-30 dB and the excess loss is 0.2-2.6 dB for TE polarization while the ER is 20-27 dB and the excess loss is 0.3-2.8 dB for TM polarization when operating in the wavelength range of 1520-1580 nm. Abstract:A compact and ultrabroadband polarization beam splitter (PBS) utilizing a hybrid plasmonic Y-branch (HPYB) on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform is proposed and numerically demonstrated. The HPYB consists of a vertical hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW) and a horizontal HPW formed by silicon (Si) and silver (Ag) strip waveguides sandwiched with a silicon dioxide (SiO2) layer, in which the vertical and horizontal hybrid plasmonic modes (HPMs) are excited by the input transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes, respectively. The HPMs are split into different ports and coupled back to TE and TM modes to implement the polarization splitting function. A simplified and compact HPYB is robust for the HPMs' generation. The structure is wavelength insensitive since the HPMs' excitation is weakly correlated to the optical wavelengths. The simulation results show that the HPYB-based PBS has a compact footprint of $5 \times 1.8\ \mu\text{m}^2$ and an ultralarge working bandwidth of 285 nm, with the polarization crosstalk <; -10 dB and the worst-case TE (TM) mode insertion loss of -1.53 (-2.35) dB. The device also exhibits a large fabrication tolerance of 210-nm variation (from -100 to 110 nm) to the waveguide width for both polarizations.

Abstract:A high-performance polarization beam splitter (PBS) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on the 220-nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The proposed PBS consists of a sub-wavelength grating (SWG) assisted adiabatic directional coupler (ADC) and a simple filter at the through port of the ADC. The SWG structures embedded in the ADC can suppress and enhance the optical field evolutions of the fundamental TE and TM modes (referred to as TE and TM modes in short), respectively, thus enhancing the separation of these two modes. The simple filter composed of four Euler bends is used to further improve the polarization extinction ratio (PER) of the TM mode while maintaining low insertion loss (IL) for the TE mode. The simulated results show that our proposed PBS possesses the high performance of IL < 0.3 dB and PER > 30 dB for both the TE and TM modes over the bandwidth of 1.46- $1.625~\mu \text{m}$ , which covers the most important S, C, and, L bands for optical communications. The experimental results show that the fabricated PBS has excellent performance of IL < 0.8 dB and PER > 24.5 dB over the bandwidth of 1.53- $1.61~\mu \text{m}$ .

Abstract:A silicon-based polarizing beam splitter (PBS) working at the 2 μm wavelength band is proposed and demonstrated experimentally by using a bent directional coupler assisted with a nano-slot waveguide. The nano-slot width is chosen as 180 nm so that the present PBS can be fabricated with MPW foundries. In theory, the designed PBS has extinction ratios (ERs) of >15 dB and >30 dB for TM- and TE- polarizations in the wavelength range of 1825-2020 nm, respectively. For the fabricated PBS, the excess losses (ELs) are low (∼0.5 dB) while the measured results show the ERs are >15 dB and >20 dB for TM- and TE-polarizations in the wavelength band of 1860-1980 nm.

Abstract:A novel compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on a silicon nitride-silica-silicon horizontal slot waveguide is numerically proposed, to the best of our knowledge. In the slot waveguide, the transverse electric (TE) mode propagates through the silicon layer, while the transverse magnetic (TM) mode is confined in the slot region. By utilizing an asymmetric directional coupler (DC) and bent directional coupler (bent DC) consisting of a slot waveguide and a thin silicon waveguide, PBSs with 14.6 μm (DC) and 5.2 μm (bent DC) coupling regions are obtained. Without cascading other structures, the DC PBS shows a low insertion loss (IL) of 0.4 (0.2) dB and high extinction ratio (ER) of 31.56 (24.61) dB for a TE (TM) port around 1.55 μm, while the IL and ER of the bent DC PBS are 0.4 (0.15) dB and 35.83 (21.74) dB, respectively. The proposed PBSs also have a good fabrication tolerance and broad bandwidth (>40 nm) for an ER of >20 dB.

Abstract:A short polarization beam splitter (PBS) is presented based on an asymmetrical evanescent coupling system, which consists of a narrow input waveguide, a narrow output waveguide, and a wide middle optical waveguide between them. The width of the waveguides is designed so that the phase-matching condition is satisfied for the TM fundamental (TM0) mode in the narrow input/output waveguide and the first higher order TM (TM1) mode in the wide middle waveguide. Meanwhile, there is a significant phase mismatch for the case with TE polarization. Therefore, for the launched TE polarized light, almost no coupling happens when it goes through the coupling region and finally the TE polarized light is output from the through port. For the launched TM0 mode in the narrow input waveguide, it is completely coupled to the TM1 mode in the wide middle waveguide by choosing the optimal length of the coupling region. Furthermore, the TM1 mode excited in the wide middle waveguide is then coupled to the TM0 mode in the narrow output waveguide through the evanescent coupling between them. A short (similar to 25 mu m long) PBS is designed based on silicon-on-insulator nanowires, while the gap width is chosen as large as 300 nm to make the fabrication easy. Numerical simulations show that the present PBS has a good fabrication tolerance for the variation of the waveguide width ( more than +/- 20nm) and a broadband (similar to 50 nm) for an extinction ratio of >15 dB.

Abstract:The polarization beam splitter (PBS) is an essential component in the polarization diversity circuit to overcome the strong polarization dependence of silicon nanophotonic devices. Among various PBS structures, the asymmetrical directional couplers (ADCs) are most commonly used due to the best overall performances. However, it is still challenging to realize an on-chip silicon PBS with a small footprint, low loss, high extinction ratio, and, especially, broad bandwidth, simultaneously. The working bandwidth is limited for ADCs, since the wavelength difference will introduce deviations to both the effective indices and the coupling strength, which would distort the phase-matching property and the optimal coupling length. In this paper, an on-chip silicon PBS is proposed and demonstrated using "effective medium anisotropy" instead of "configuration asymmetry" to break the bandwidth bottleneck. The metamaterials with engineered anisotropy and dispersion are utilized to form a hetero-anisotropic slab. For TM polarization, the slab performs as a multi-mode interference coupler, while for TE polarization, the slab performs as two isolated waveguides. The fabricated PBS shows low loss <1 dB, high extinction ratio >20 dB, and a record working bandwidth >200 nm, with a footprint as small as 12.25 x 1.9 mu m(2).

Abstract:In this paper, a polarization beam splitter using a pixelated directional coupler is proposed, designed, and experimentally demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator platform. According to the phase matching, structural parameters for the coupling region consisting of a straight waveguide and a pixelated waveguide are carefully selected by using direct-binary-search optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, and thus the input fundamental transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes can be effectively separated from each other in an ultra-compact coupling length. The coupling length of our designed device is only 6 pm. Experimental results reveal that, the measured polarization extinction ratio is greater than 14.22 dB and the corresponding insertion loss is smaller than 1.36 dB within a bandwidth from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-electric polarization, while the measured polarization extinction ratio and insertion loss are respectively larger than 14.47 dB and lower than 1.53 dB from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-magnetic polarization.

Abstract:An ultra-broadband polarization beam splitter (PBS) with low excess loss (EL) and a high extinction ratio (ER) is proposed and demonstrated for the case with 340 nm thick silicon-on-insulator waveguides. Here the PBS is realized by using cascaded adiabatic dual-core tapers, which consist of a strip core and a subwavelength-grating core. For the designed PBS, which has a 33.6 µm long mode-evolution region, the ELs are ${ \lt }{0.3}\;{\rm dB}$<0.3dB, and the ERs are ${ \gt }{20}\;{\rm dB}$>20dB for both TE and TM polarizations in an ultra-broad bandwidth of ${ \gt }{270}\;{\rm nm}$>270nm (1400-1670 nm) in theory. For the fabricated PBS, the measured bandwidths for achieving ERs of ${\sim}{20}$∼20 and ${\sim}{25}\;{\rm dB}$∼25dB are 240 and 220 nm, while the 1 dB bandwidth is as large as 230 nm, which are the largest bandwidths reported to date, to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract:A novel ultra-short polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on a bent directional coupler is proposed. The bent directional coupler has two bent optical waveguides with different core widths, which is designed to have phase-matching for TM polarization while there is a significant phase-mismatch for TE polarization. Therefore, the TM polarized light can be coupled from the narrow input waveguide to the adjacent wide waveguide while the TE polarization goes through the coupling region without significant coupling. An ultra-short (<10μm-long) PBS is designed based on silicon-on-insulator nanowires and the length of the bent coupling region is as small as 4.5μm when choosing the gap width as 200nm (large enough to simplify the fabrication). The numerical simulations show that the present PBS has a good fabrication tolerance for the variation of the waveguide width (more than ±60nm) and a very broad band (~200nm) for an extinction ratio of >10dB.

Abstract:An ultra-short (similar to 10 mu m long) polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on an asymmetrical bent directional coupler (DC) is demonstrated experimentally by using silicon-on-insulator nanowires. The bent DC is designed to cross-couple TM polarized light completely while there is almost no coupling for TE polarization. Grating couplers are introduced at both ends of the PBS for efficient coupling to single-mode fibers. The measurement results show that the extinction ratios of the fabricated ultra-short PBS are higher than 10 dB for both polarizations in a broad wavelength range. Abstract:In this paper, a novel polarization beam splitter (PBS) is proposed. The silicon-based subwavelength grating (SWG) is successfully applied to the asymmetric directional coupled PBS, and the research shows that its performance has improved in many aspects. By carefully optimizing structural parameters, the transverse electric (TE) polarization is in a reflected state in the SWG, which effectively weakens the coupling strength, while the transverse magnetic (TM) polarization is almost unaffected. Simulation results show that the bandwidths of TE polarization and TM polarization are 200 nm (1450–1650 nm) and 141 nm (1450–1650 nm) in the extinction ratio of >20 dB, respectively, while the insertion loss is <0.5 dB and <1.3 dB, respectively. The PBS is very robust to the process production. With the manufacturing error exceeding 20 nm, the performance is only reduced by 0.6 dB, effectively solving the problem of complex preparation process.

Abstract:A compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) is presented for the case with a 340-nm-thick silicon core layer by using an asymmetric evanescent coupling system. It consists of a narrow input waveguide, a narrow output waveguide, and a wide middle waveguide betweenthem. In this design, the widths of these three waveguides are chosen optimally, so that the phase matching condition is satisfied forthe fundamental (TM0) mode in the narrow input/output waveguide and the first higher order (TM1) mode in the wide middle waveguide. Meanwhile, there is moderate phase mismatch for TE polarization. Then, the length of the coupling region is also optimized, so that the launched TE0 mode gets out from the through port while the launched TM0 mode is coupled completely to the cross port with the assistance of the first higher order (TM1) mode in the wide middle waveguide. The designed PBS has a compact footprint of 38 x 3.5 mu m(2). In theory, the designed PBS works very well with a low excess loss (< 0.5 dB) and a high extinction ratio (> 15 dB) in a broad band of 1510-1570 nm. For the fabricated PBS, the extinction ratios are> 10 dB and> 20 dB in the wavelength range of 1535-1610 nm, for TM and TE polarizations, respectively.
