Abstract:Bistable behaviors are experimentally investigated in an active fiber-optical parametric oscillator by adjusting open-loop losses and pump powers. Optical bistability can be obtained at the switch-off state and the modulation depth of 16dB is achieved.

Abstract:Parity-time (PT) PT ) symmetry provides a new technique for the manipulation of oscillation modes in the field of microwave photonics. In this paper, we conceive and experimentally demonstrate a simple PT-symmetric all-optical microwave oscillator (AOMO) based on a single polarimetric loop, overcoming the challenges of manipulating gain and loss and mutual coupling ratio and perfect control of the geometry in the dual-loop configurations. We also uncover the analytics of the PT-symmetry condition in an AOMO with a detailed nonquantum description. By controlling the polarization rotation angle of the PT-symmetric structure, two mutually coupled loops with balanced gain and loss are easily conceived, enabling the proposed AOMO to operate in the single mode. The optical-optical feedback modulation and oscillatory frequency selection are implemented using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect, respectively. Benefiting from the SOA's cross-gain modulation, the SBS-based frequency selection, and the PT- symmetric breaking, dual-wavelength optical signals can be achieved with wideband tunability, very low beating phase noise, and high stability. In the experiment, we successfully generated an oscillating signal tuning from 3 to 30 GHz, and the measured phase noise reached - 103.2 dBc/Hz at 10 GHz and - 90.69 dBc/Hz at 30 GHz at 10-kHz offset frequency.

Abstract:We demonstrate active mode locking of a fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO). By inserting an amplitude modulator (AM) into a continuous-wave pumped FOPO loop, intracavity loss is varied periodically. When the modulation frequency of AM coincides with the harmonics of longitudinal modes spacing of the loop cavity, stable 10-GHz pulse train can be obtained. By adjusting the intracavity filter, the wavelength of the pulse train can be tuned over 21 nm.

Abstract:We propose a novel multi-wavelength fiber optical parametric oscillator (MW-FOPO) based on a ring cavity. A highly nonlinear fiber and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed by two 3-dB optical couplers are used as the gain medium and the comb filter, respectively. Multi-wavelength lasing of the MW-FOPO with an ultra-narrow wavelength spacing of about 0.08 nm is achieved. The output spectrum of the MW-FOPO covers a wavelength regime from 1510 nm to 1615 nm (for lasing wavelengths with the power that exceeds -60 dBm). The stability of the MW-FOPO is discussed and experimentally demonstrated. A comparison of the output spectra between the MW-FOPO and the multi-wavelength Erbium-doped fiber laser is also presented.

Abstract:We report the experimental observation of optical bistable switching in a combined distributed-feedback/Fabry–Perot structure. The sample had a high switching contrast with almost zero reflectivity in the on-state. A turnoff time as short as 4 ns was measured. The threshold power for bistability was about 2 mW. Bistable switching with the memory effect and a potential application for all-optical signal regeneration were demonstrated.

Abstract:A fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) is an effective way of generating new wavelength lasers in non-conventional wavelength bands, but the complex nature behind it is challenging for both theoretical and experimental studies. Luckily, dispersive Fourier transformation, which has been emerging in recent years, provides us with a good method of demystifying this complexity. In this letter, we capture and report, for the first time, the instantaneous dynamics of the initiating process in a fiber optical parametric oscillator. We directly observe that the initiating process experiences three stages. The FOPO fully establishes the parametric oscillation during nearly 2000 round-trips, i.e., nearly 93 $\mu \text{s}$ . In the meantime, the spectrum of the amplifier spontaneous emission noise gradually narrows down and evolves into the characteristic spectrum of the parametric oscillation. In order to start parametric oscillation, the pump power needs to exceed a certain threshold, after reaching which the power of the residual pump decreases while the signal and idle light grow. As we expect, due to the four-wave mixing effect, the signal and idle light are completely synchronous. Moreover, the stability of the oscillation is very sensitive to a slight fluctuation of the pumping pulses.

Abstract:Ultrafast optical bistability was observed in a planar optical waveguide made with a 2,9,16,23-tetraoctadecanoylamido-substituted vanadyl phthalocyanine-doped polystyrene film. Input-output curves with hysteresis characteristics were measured with laser pulses of 60-ps pulse width at 532 nm. The switchup and switchdown times were less than 10 and 20 ps, respectively. Abstract:High-power and widely tunable continuous-wave optical parametric oscillators (cw OPOs), as mature radiation sources in the mid-infrared range, are limited by their frequency fluctuation. We built a cw OPO working at the near- and mid-infrared ranges and discuss the extent to which its frequency stability is affected by the mechanical temperature and the air pressure of the cavity. In addition, we artificially provoked mode hops by changing the above two factors to analyze the thermal-induced refractive index variation of the crystal. An inequality between the spacing of the hops and the free spectrum range (FSR) was observed. The wavelength stability of the cw OPO was guaranteed passively, and the longest mode-hopping-free time exceeded 13 h through sealing the cavity and thermal control. Further analysis of factors affecting frequency drift is critically essential for the reliability of cw OPO, particularly in environments outside the laboratory, and may provide a new method for high-precision tuning wavelengths.

Abstract:We report an all-optical switch based on two-pump four-wave mixing in fibers. The switched signal is not shifted in frequency in this scheme. For different signal wavelengths, the pump wavelengths and powers can be optimized to achieve the best performance. The principle of how to design the switch is discussed in detail. A high extinction ratio of -60 dB is obtained when the pump parameters are optimized by a genetic algorithm that exhibits good convergence property and high computing efficiency. The effect of zero-dispersion wavelength fluctuations along the fiber on the switch is analyzed.

Abstract:This paper reports on a high-repetition-rate dual signal-wave (DSW) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating at the 1.5μm band with tunable wavelength intervals from 2.5nm to 69.1nm. Two periodically poled crystals, a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with multiple gratings and a single grating MgO-doped PPLN (PPMgOLN), are cascaded in the same OPO cavity to generate dual signal-waves by using quasi-phase-matched (QPM) technique. The pump source was a Q-switched diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 50kHz. At an incident pump power of 3W, an average output power of 169.6mW at 1489.2nm and 1558.3nm has been achieved.

Abstract:The development of fiber optical parametric oscillators (FOPO) based on highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber is reviewed in this paper. Firstly, the background and motivation are introduced, and it is pointed out that the FOPO is promising to act as optical source in non-conventional wavelength bands. Subsequently, the context focuses principally on the problem of inherent multiple-longitudinal-mode characteristic of FOPO and the corresponding solutions to it. The primary technique is by locking the phase of multiple longitudinal modes. The first reported actively mode locked FOPO is also presented in this article. However, it is not probable to realize passively mode locked FOPO because of the random phase dithering of the pump required for suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering. Furthermore, a regeneratively mode locked FOPO is demonstrated, which can generate wide band tunable radiation in nonconventional wavelengths. Besides mode locked FOPO, the single-longitudinal-mode FOPO is also introduced. Finally, potential future directions are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the nonlinear optical bistability (OB) in a symmetrical multilayer structure. This multilayer structure is constructed by embedding a nonlinear three-dimensional Dirac semimetal (3D DSM) into a Fabry–Perot cavity composed of one-dimensional photonic crystals. The OB phenomenon stems from the third order nonlinear conductivity of 3D DSM. The local field of resonance mode could enhance the nonlinearity and reduce the thresholds of OB. This structure achieves the tunability of OB due to the fact that the transmittance could be modulated by the Fermi energy. It is found that the OB threshold and threshold width could be remarkably reduced by increasing the Fermi energy of the 3D DSM. Besides, we also found that the OB curve depends heavily on the angle of incidence of the incident light, the structural parameters of the Fabry–Perot cavity, and the position of the 3D DSM inside the cavity. After parameter optimization, we obtained OB with a threshold of 106 V/m. We believe this simple multilayer structure could provide a reference idea for realizing low-threshold and tunable all-optical switching devices.

Abstract:The actively mode-locked fiber laser has two kinds of instability. It is proposed a novel method to overcome the short term instability by exploiting nonlinear polarization rotation. The long term instability is removed by feedback used to control fiber cavity length. It is made the actively mode-locked fiber ring laser operation stabily for more than 8 times. The pulse width was 10ps, the spectrum width was 0. 317nm, the product of time-bandwidth was 0. 403, wavelength was 1535-1564nm, the tunable range was 39nm.

Abstract:The stable operation of a high-repetition-rate dispersion-tuned harmonically mode-locked fiber-optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) is demonstrated for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The experimental results match well with the theory. By introducing large cavity dispersion, the round-trip delay can vary with wavelength. Thus the cavity can be synchronized with the modulation frequency of an external clock passively. The FOPO can be tuned simply by adjusting the modulation frequency. A stable 10-GHz pulse train is obtained over 6-nm tuning range for each of the signal and idler.

Abstract:Synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) provide ultra-fast light pulses at tuneable wavelengths. Their primary drawback is the need for precise cavity control (temperature and length), with flexibility issues such as fixed repetition rates and marginally tuneable pulse widths. Targeting a simpler and versatile OPO, we explore the inherent disorder of the refractive index in single-mode fibres realising the first random OPO - the parametric analogous of random lasers. This novel approach uses modulation instability (χ(3) non-linearity) for parametric amplification and Rayleigh scattering for feedback. The pulsed system exhibits high inter-pulse coherence (coherence time of ~0.4 ms), offering adjustable repetition rates (16.6-2000 kHz) and pulse widths (0.69-47.9 ns). Moreover, it operates continuously without temperature control loops, resulting in a robust and flexible device, which would find direct application in LiDAR technology. This work sets the stage for future random OPOs using different parametric amplification mechanisms.

Abstract:Parity–time (PT) symmetry has been intensively exploited in optoelectronic oscillators (OEOs), enabling mode selection in mutually coupled feedback loops. However, two mutually coupled feedback loops are usually established to achieve a spatial PT-symmetric architecture, which increases system complexity and instability. Here, we propose and experimentally prove a PT-symmetric OEO based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). The PT symmetry is implemented in an overlapping spatial loop in which the gain and loss are realized based on SBS gain and SBS loss, respectively. By adjusting the pump power and the polarization states of the probe and pump lights, the gain and loss can be balanced, thus achieving stable single-mode oscillation. In experiment, a 9.66 GHz microwave signal with a side-mode suppression ratio of 41 dB is generated. At 10 kHz offset frequency, the single-sideband phase noise reaches as low as −120.1 dBc/Hz. This demonstration opens new avenues to enhance mode selectivity in an OEO and can potentially be integrated on a chip.

Abstract:We demonstrate the suppression of parametric instability in an 80-meter-long Fabry-Perot cavity through optical actuation in an electro-optical feedback loop. The suppression of the high-order mode is achieved by injecting a high-order mode with the same frequency and opposite phase. The beat note signal between the fundamental and high-order mode in the transmission of the cavity is filtered, amplified, and applied to an electro-optical modulator to create a sideband at the high-order mode frequency. Misalignment of the injection couples a small part of this sideband to the high-order mode of the cavity. The paper presents a theoretical analysis and an experimental demonstration of parametric instability suppression for an instability that would normally ring up with a parametric gain of approximately 2.5. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.102006 © 2024 American Physical Society
