Abstract:Multidimensional constellation shaping of up to 32 dimensions with different spectral efficiencies are compared through AWGN and fiber-optic simulations. The results show that no constellation is universal and the balance of required and effective SNRs should be jointly considered for the specific optical transmission scenario.

Abstract:We propose Four-Dimensional (4D) energy limit enumerative sphere shaping (ESS) of $M$-QAM signaling to minimize rate loss and improve the transmission performance over non-linear WDM optical-fiber systems. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional ESS by $0.19$~bit/4D-symbol in achievable information rate over a $205$-km single-span link and a WDM transmission of five polarization-division-multiplexed channels with $400$-Gbit/s net rate per channel. We also study the achieved performance over several shaping block lengths and show that the achieved gains do not scale well over multi-span systems.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate improved intra-channel nonlinearity tolerance of the root M-shaped pulse (RMP) with respect to the root raised cosine (RRC) pulse in spectrally efficient 128 Gbit/s PDM-16QAM coherent transmission systems. In addition we evaluate the impact of dispersion map and fiber dispersion parameter on the intra-channel nonlinearity tolerance of the RRC pulse and the RMP via both simulation and experimentation. The RMP is shown to have a better nonlinear tolerance than the RRC pulse for most investigated scenarios except for links with zero residual dispersion percentage per span or the zero dispersion region of a fiber. Therefore, the RMP is suitable for extending the maximum reach of spectrally efficient coherent transmission systems in legacy links in addition to currently intensively studied standard single mode fiber (SSMF) based dispersion unmanaged links.

Abstract:Enhanced equalization phase noise (EEPN), generated from the uncompensated dispersion experienced by laser phase noises, can cause serious damage to the transmission quality of optical fiber systems. In this work, the performance of a wideband Nyquist-spaced long-haul nonlinear optical fiber communication systems suffering from EEPN is investigated and discussed through split-step numerical simulations and analytical models based on the perturbation analysis, in the cases of digital nonlinearity compensation (NLC) and electronic dispersion compensation (EDC). The efficiency and the accuracy of the analytical models were validated via simulations, considering the different symbol rates and modulation formats. The performance of the C-band transmission was comprehensively studied based on the model. Our results reveal that the growth of symbol rates and transmission distances aggravates the distortions in the C-band system.
Intra-channel Nonlinear Effects in High Speed Optical Transmission System

Abstract:Intra-channel nonlinear effects impose a major limitation to system performance in high speed optical transmission.These effects,which are usually referred to intra-channel four-wave mixing(IFWM) and cross-phase modulation(IXPM),may cause amplitude and timing jitter and lead to serious transmission penalties.The paper discussed causes and several factors of intra-channel pulse interaction.Analysis and numerical simulation derive conclusions as follows:To suppress intra-channel nonlinear effects,phase modulation is superior to amplitude modulation,and post-compensation of dispersion is superior to pre-compensation,especially for large launched power.In addition,the duty cycle of pulse has an optimum value for a certain launched power.

Abstract:Phase pre-modulation is investigated to overcome the impacts of sensitivity reduction and chromatic dispersion in high-speed and long-distance fiber transmission systems. The bit-synchronous phase pre-modulation imposed on non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signals at the transmitter can reshape the NRZ pulse to return-to-zero (RZ) waveform and hence improve the eye opening. Experiments are performed to measure the spectra, eye diagrams and power penalties of conventional NRZ signals and phase-pre-modulated NRZ signals under different modulation depth and dispersion. Results of 10 Gb/s transmission show that the phase-pre-modulated NRZ signals have a power penalty lower than 1 dB with the absolute value of link dispersion less than 1000 ps/nm, exhibiting higher sensitivity and lower dispersion-induced penalty than conventional NRZ signals. This modulation scheme relaxes the requirements to optical signal-to-noise ratio and dispersion management, extends the transmission distance and is easy to implement.

Abstract:In this paper, we briefly review high spectral efficiency optical superchannel transmission with Nyquist pulse shaping. Afterwards we present the principle of coherent optical Nyquist single carrier (SC) systems with frequency domain channel estimation and time domain equalization (FDTDE) with nonlinear compensation scheme coordinated. With this technique, Terabit polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 32 quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) superchannel with Nyquist pulse shaping is generated and transmitted experimentally.

Abstract:Probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) offers a significant performance improvement over uniform signaling. It was recently discovered that long blocks are not required to achieve maximum shaping gain when transmitting over the nonlinear fiber channel because short-length PCS effectively mitigates fiber nonlinear interference (NLI). The reason for this behavior is that short-length PCS implicitly induces some temporal properties in the shaped transmit sequence that are beneficial for the fiber-optic channel. To achieve robust data-aided digital signal processing of high-order QAM, periodic quaternary phase shift keying pilots are typically inserted into the high-order QAM transmit sequence. In this work, we investigate in simulations the effect of such pilot-aided signaling on NLI mitigation. Albeit modifying the temporal properties of the shaped transmit sequence, a pilot rate of 1/32 is found to not alter the beneficial effects of short-length PCS. The operation meaning of this finding is that even with pilot-aided signaling, long PCS block lengths are not required for maximum shaping gain.

Abstract:This work presents an approximate differentiable model for fiber channels that is suitable for short-distance optical communication systems with moderate nonlinear effects. The study investigates the impact of quantization and dispersion on the signal by utilizing a differentiable quantization function. A deep complex neural network was constructed using the PyTorch platform, and the optimization of the signal waveform shaper was performed. The optimized waveform shape successfully learned the characteristic features of quantitative noise under dispersion. At the end of the paper, the joint influence of the quantization process and the dispersion process is studied, and the statistical characteristics of the quantization noise are analyzed. The neural network structure proposed in this paper is of great significance for studying the interaction between quantitative effects and dispersion effects.

Abstract:We show that short-length probabilistic shaping reduces nonlinear interference in optical fiber transmission. SNR improvements of up to 0.8 dB are obtained. The shaping gain vanishes when interleaving is employed and not undone before transmission.

Abstract:Residual IQ skew in a coherent transmitter severely degrades the performance of long-haul coherent optical communication systems. The impairment is particularly detrimental for a high baud-rate system using quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). Furthermore, Nyquist pulse shaping increases the spectral efficiency for WDM systems. However, sharp roll-off of Nyquist pulse shaping further reduces the tolerance to residual IQ skew. Thus, certain trade-offs between spectral efficiency and roll-off factor should be made to improve the tolerance of residual IQ skew. We experimentally studied this trade-off and determined the optimal roll-off factor, channel spacing, receiver bandwidth, and equalizer length. The results serve as a guideline for high baud-rate coherent WDM systems.

Abstract:Transmitter IQ skew severely degrades the performance of coherent optical communication systems, especially for high baud-rate and higher order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) systems. Utilizing Nyquist pulse shaping can increase the spectral efficiency of WDM systems, while sharp roll-off of Nyquist pulse shaping further reduces the tolerance to residual IQ skew. Thus, there is a tradeoff between WDM system spectral efficiency and its tolerance to residual IQ skew. In this talk, we review the impact of Nyquist pulse shaping on the tolerance to residual IQ skew. The roll-off factor, channel spacing, receiver bandwidth and equalizer length are optimized given certain residual IQ skew. We further discussed the potential application scenarios and the methodologies to apply this technique. The results serve as guideline for high baud-rate coherent long-haul optical communication systems.

Abstract:As we know, probabilistic shaping (PS), as a typical one of modulation format optimization technologies, becomes a promising technology and attracts more and more attention, because of its higher transmission capacity and lower computation complexity. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated a reliable 8 Gbaud-rate delivery of polarization multiplexed PS 16-QAM single carrier signal in a MIMO radio-over-fiber system with 20-km SMF-28 wire link and 2.5-m wireless link at 60 GHz. The BER performance of PS 16-QAM signals at different baud rate was also evaluated. What is more, PS 16-QAM was also experimentally compared with uniform 16-QAM, and it can be concluded that PS 16-QAM brings a better compromise between effectiveness and reliability performance and a higher capacity than uniform 16-QAM for the radio-over-fiber system.
