Abstract:A wavelength tunable, dark pulse, and bright pulse-switched dual-wavelength fiber ring laser is reported. Through adding high nonlinear optical fiber as a nonlinear medium in the fiber ring cavity, the double-wavelength dark-bright pulse pair can be formed. The separation of dark-bright pulse pair can be achieved by polarization beam splitter. The dark pulse and bright pulse with orthogonal polarization correspond to different wavelengths, respectively. Then, via tunable optical filter and polarization controller to filter out the wavelength we need and adjust the polarization, we achieved the interconversion of dark pulse and bright pulse in the same wavelength and the tunableness of wavelengths of dark pulse and bright pulse in our laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate a nonlinearity optimization method by altering distribution of passive fibers in a dissipative-soliton mode-locked fiber laser to level up output parameters. In the numerical simulation, we found that the passive fiber segment after gain fiber characterizes the highest average B-integral among fiber segments. By reducing the length of this fiber section and keeping the total passive fiber length as constant, the output pulse energy can be effectively scaled up while maintaining a short dechirped pulse duration, resulting in boosting peak power. With this method, 37-nJ pulses are generated from a dissipative-soliton mode-locked cladding pumped ytterbium-doped single-mode fiber laser in the experiment. The pulse can be dechirped to 66 fs with 350 kW peak power. Moreover, the pulse pedestal is suppressed by a vector-dispersion compressor.
Broadband Noise-Like Pulse Generation at 1 Μm Via Dispersion and Nonlinearity Management.

Abstract:We demonstrate that optical microfibers integrated in Yb-doped fiber lasers boost broadband noise-like pulse (NLP) generation via dispersion and nonlinearity management, with an optical spectrum spanning from below 1000 nm to beyond 1600 nm when the diameter of the optical microfiber is 1.2 µm. Numerical simulations show that dispersion and nonlinearity management provided by the optical microfiber is responsible for the broadband NLP generation. Furthermore, it is shown experimentally that dispersion and nonlinearity management via optical microfibers can also bring the highest optical rogue waves along with the broadest optical spectrum.
Bright-Dark Pulse Pair in a Passively Mode-Locked Fiber Laser Based on Thulium-Doped Fiber

Abstract:A dual-wavelength bright-dark pulse pair has been experimentally demonstrated in a mode-locked fiber laser based on thulium-doped fiber (TDF). By appropriately adjusting the polarization state, the dual-wavelength bright-dark pulse pairs with fundamental frequency of 20.56 MHz can be successfully obtained under the pump power ranging from 150 to 500 mW. The largest pulse energy is 2.84 nJ, and the conversion efficiency exceeds 10%. The generation mechanism of the bright-dark pulse pair in the cavity is primarily attributed to the cross-phase modulation (XPM) induced by the interaction of the bright soliton and dark soliton locating at different wavebands. Additionally, the dynamics of the bright-dark pulse pair is influenced by the polarization effect. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a bright-dark pulse pair laser employing TDF as the saturable absorber (SA). Its superiority for mode-locking has been fully proved, making it enormous potential in the fields of ultrafast lasers and nonlinear optics. Furthermore, this pulsed laser may offer a novel path for the development of high-power fiber lasers.

Abstract:Multiple pulses with broadband spectrum generation are experimentally obtained in passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber ring lasers based on nonlinear polarization rotation, which is achieved by incorporating a length of highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber in the laser cavity. The temporal and spectral dynamic behaviors of multipulse bunching states are demonstrated. The maximum spectral width and flatness are attained when the continuous-wave component is suppressed under appropriate polarization states and pump powers.

Abstract:In comparison to bright pulses, better stability and not susceptible to losses, making dark pulses accessible for applications in such fields as signal processing, optics sensing and quantum communication. Here we investigate the dual-wavelength domain-wall (DW) dark pulse generation in a graded-index multimode fiber (GIMF) based anomalous dispersion single-mode fiber (SMF) laser for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. By optimizing intra-cavity nonlinearity and pulse polarization, the mode-locked states can evolve each other between bright pulses, dark pulses and bright-dark pulse pairs. The evolution mechanism among them may be relevant to the coherent mode superposition, spectral filtering, and mode selection in SMF-GIMF-SMF hybrid-fiber modulation device that affect the pulse formation and evolution in the temporal, frequency, and space domains respectively. These results provide a valuable reference for promoting the further development of the nonlinear optics and ultrafast optics, in which ultrafast photonic device, with low cost, simple manufacture as well as wide adaptability, as novel pulsed generation technique, plays vital role.

Abstract:Optical domain–wall (DW) solitons have attracted considerable attention for their special applications in wavelength-division multiplexing and signal processing in optical communications. In this study, we construct a dispersion-managed fiber laser with a composite filtering effect composed of nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) filtering and Lyot filtering for achieving dual-wavelength domain–wall dark–bright pulses. Our optical-domain dark–bright pulse is characterized by even, though it has two optical wavelength components, still has the same repetition frequency. The phenomenon of dual-wavelength dark and bright pulses occurs by adjusting the composite filtering, and the dark and bright pulses can be separated by continuing the filtering. Our work presents a novel approach to achieve dual-wavelength domain–wall dark–bright pulses.

Abstract:We demonstrate the dark pulse emission in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-Based fiber ring laser with net abnormal dispersion. By means of the polarization-dependent property of SOA, the laser is mode-locked by using nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) technique. Stable bright pulses and dark pulses are observed through changing the current of the SOA and altering the polarization states. The dependence of both the polarization states and the current of SOA on the formation of dark pulses in the cavity have been carefully investigated, revealing that the output average power of the measured dark pulse is far greater than that of the bright pulse under the same current. Moreover, the evolution process from bright pulse to dark pulse has been studied, showing the role of the extinction ratio of PCs in the transition process. The polarization dependent and bistability properties of SOA and the extinction ratio of PCs are dominant for the dark pulses generation, giving a further evidence of the generation of dark pulses in different laser cavity.

Abstract:We report dark–bright pulse pair generation from the ytterbium doped fiber laser mode-locked by cascaded nonlinear multimode interference (MMI) effect under an all-normal dispersion configuration. The MMI is implemented in a step index single mode–multimode–single mode fiber structure. The combination of two MMI structures, acting like a saturable absorber, has been used for stable mode-locking operation in the resonator. By adjusting the polarization controller attached to one of the MMI structure, stable dark–bright pulses are observed at fundamental, second and third harmonic repetition rates. The optical spectrum of the dark–bright pulses is doubly peaked at 1036.6 and 1040.6 nm with a spectral width ∼0.7 nm. The width of the dark pulses varied from 72 to 50 ns and that of the bright pulses from 30 to 14 ns when the pump power is increased from 102 to 170 mW at the fundamental repetition rate mode-locking. The darkness of the dark and intensity of bright pulses increase with the pump power. Dark and bright pulses in the pair are resolved by placing a polarizing component confirming their vector nature.

Abstract:Dual-comb generation with bidirectional fiber ring laser is highly prospective for its compactness and coherency. In this paper, we propose a dual-ring hybrid mode-locked fiber laser for dual-comb generation. The dual-ring laser contains elements of hybrid mode-locking for each sub-ring individually, while sharing the bidirectionally pumped erbium-doped fiber (EDF). The hybrid mode-locking is realized by transmission semiconductor saturable absorber (SESA) and nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE). With the help of two three-port optical circulators, non-ideal reflection of two SESAs are eliminated. Accordingly, two series of short pules are generated in each sub-ring with different direction individually. Experimental observations and analyses demonstrate that dual comb of about 300 kHz difference in repetition rates are generated by inserting a 10 cm cavity length difference between the two sub-rings. With the help of hybrid mode-locking and large power bidirectional pumping, the mode-locking of dual combs are stable and self-starting.

Abstract:We have demonstrated the dual-wavelength domain-wall pulse operation in an Er-doped mode-locked fiber laser based on single-mode fiber (SMF)–graded index multimode fiber (GIMF)–SMF as the saturable absorber for the first time. The domain-wall dark–bright pulse pairs exhibited two peaks, which were located at 1604.6 and 1606 nm. The pulse repetition rate was maintained at 16.5 MHz throughout the dark–bright pulse pairs operation. Besides, dark–bright pulse pairs operation was demonstrated at a relative stability with the signal to noise ratio of 55.3 dB. Moreover, the dark–bright pulse pairs could be converted into bright–dark pulse pairs by adjusting the polarization state, which has potential advantages for the development of wavelength division multiplexing and optical fiber sensing technology.

Abstract:: This study reports new types of passive mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser (EDFL) based on a segment of doped fiber saturable absorber (DFSA) with Tm/Ho-doped fiber (THDF), Yb-doped fiber (YDF), and Er-doped fiber (EDF). By employing THDF-SA, a bright pulse sequence with a fundamental repetition rate of 17.86 MHz was obtained. In addition, various mode-locked output states, including dark pulses, dark–bright pulse pairs, bright–dark pulse pairs, and second-harmonic pulses, were obtained through polarization modulation and gain modulation, and the orthogonality of dark–bright pulses in both polarization directions was verified. Furthermore, using EDF-SA and YDF-SA, dark pulses and dark–bright pulses were obtained. A comparison of the three experiments revealed that THDF-SA effectively reduces the mode-locked threshold and improves the average output power. Compared with bright pulses, dark pulses offer several advantages such as resisting noise, increasing propagation speed, and suppressing nonlinear scattering (such as pulse-intrinsic Raman scattering); thus, the EDFL can find broad application in long-distance transmission, precision measurement, and other fields.

Abstract:Adopting an optical ring laser as the optical source, and a dispersion shifted fiber as the nonlinear medium, utilizing the nonlinear effect of optical fiber, the supercontinuum spectrum signal was generated. The spectrum width is over 40 nm, after filtered by the F-P cavity and tunable filter, 12 ultra-short optical pulses with different wavelengths were obtained successfully. The wavelength separation is 3.5 nm and the repetition rate in 2.5 GHZ.

Abstract:We report on the observation of different pulse formation dynamics in a nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE)-based broadband erbium-doped fiber laser when the net cavity group-velocity dispersion (GVD) is managed to be close to zero. The fiber laser can generate pulses with a single wavelength or dual wavelengths by adjusting the waveplates. When the laser operates in dual-wavelength emission, the output pulses corresponding to the two wavelengths exhibit Gaussian- and parabolic-like waveforms, respectively, indicating that the laser can simultaneously operate in stretched-pulse and self-similar regimes. The generation of dual-wavelength emission with different pulse waveforms can be attributed to an overdriven NPE switch acting on a chirped broadband pulse and different dispersion mechanisms. These findings provide a good foundation for comprehensively studying pulse formation dynamics in laser cavities.

Abstract:Bidirectional mode-locked lasers are an ideal light source for dual-comb technique for their system compactness and common noise cancellation. Here, we report an all-fiber bidirectional mode-locked laser based on nonlinear multimode interference. Asynchronous pulse trains in different directions with a repetition rate difference of 7 Hz are obtained. Besides, we record the pulse trains and spectra at different pump powers. In our experiment, the counter-propagating pulse (CPP) trains can operate in different states, such as the counterclockwise (CCW) direction works in single pulse while the clockwise (CW) direction works in multi-pulse or harmonic mode-locking. We believe that the work will provide a new platform for studying the dynamic characteristics of bidirectional mode-locked lasers.

Abstract:A new mechanism to induce polarization hole burning effect in Er-doped fiber ring lasers is presented. By using this effect, incorporating with the counter-propagation of the two light beams, the inhomogeneous in the gain medium broadening was significantly increased, and thus a stable dual-frequency Er-doped fiber ring laser operating in single longitudinal mode and single-frequency was demonstrated. Frequency spacing was tunable from 0.47GHz to THz.

Abstract:We develop dual-wavelength 2-mu m fiber lasers with coupled cavity configurations based on fiber Bragg gratings and study their output performance and emission dynamics. Efficient cavity-coupling management leads to different dual-wavelength operation regimes. Over 3 W of output power is realized at both 1942 and 2020 nm, and a power ratio of the 1942 nm to the 2020 nm laser emissions can be tuned from 24.9% to 237.6%. This first achieved 2-mu m fiber laser system with binary-wavelength emission and flexible power ratios can find applications in various areas.

Abstract:We demonstrate the double-Brillouin-frequency spaced multiwavelength generation at room temperature by using a simple ring Brillouin-erbium fiber laser. The Brillouin pump is pre-amplified before entering the single-mode fiber, the odd Stokes and even Stokes are amplified in two opposite directions. All amplification provided by a home-made bi-directional operation erbium-doped fiber may achieve high intensity of Brillouin Stokes that leads to the homogenous gain saturation. Twelve even Stokes and thirteen odd Stokes with a wavelength spacing of 0.172 nm (20 GHz) are simultaneously obtained for 6 dBm Brillouin pump power and 120 mW pump power at 980 nm. The influence of different Brillouin and erbium-doped-fiber pump powers on multiwavelength and tuning range are investigated in detail.

Abstract:A novel configuration was demonstrated to realize dual-wavelength operation in an erbium-doped fiber ring laser by incorporating a pair of multiplexer/demultiplexer. The repetition rate of each channel can be separately changed by adjusting a delay line associated with that channel in the cavity without changing the radio frequency. Dual-wavelength pulses at 2.5 and 5 GHz respectively were simultaneously obtained with pulse widths of 17.7 and 13 ps.
