Abstract:Pulsars are extremely useful object for research in various astrophysics fields. With the increasing requirement of high sensitivity of the received pulsar signals, a wide bandwidth and a high time resolution digital backend are needed. This paper presents a 1.2 GHz wide-bandwidth digital backend for pulsar observation. A hardware platform with small size and low power consumption is designed to perform the real time pulsar signal processing. An EV8AQ160 chip is used to sample dual polarization input signals from the antenna at 2.4G sampling rate simultaneously, and then the signal is sent to a XC6VLX240T FPGA to perform real time signal processing. In order to resolve the contradiction between high data rate of the sampled signal and operating frequency limitation of FPGA, the input data from each ADC channel is divided into 8 data streams with fs/8 data rate and a real-time parallel FFT algorithm is used to do channelize processing. After that, the data is processed in a power calculation module to acquire power parameters, and then an accumulation module is used to reduce the output data amount. At last, the channelized data is sent to computer by a gigabit Ethernet interface to the data storage computer. Three observation mode are realized. The smallest time resolution could be 10 us in high temporal resolution observation mode, and the smallest frequency could be 9.15 KHz in high frequency resolution observation mode. This equipment has been verified in pulsar observation and gives a clear outline of the pulsar signal. The successful observations demonstrate the ability of the device to observe Pulsars.
