Abstract:Applications have been made of the Bloch wave theory to the Bragg case of high energy electron diffraction for a perfect extended surface and for an inclined surface including a regular ordered array of surface steps. A general discussion is given to the boundary problems concerning the difficulties arising from the deficiency in the number of boundary conditions for solving the reflection diffraction problem uniquely, and also from the restriction imposed by the original assumption that the crystal potential ceases suddenly at the external vacuum-crystal interface. The problem has been addressed by referring to a symmetric two beam Bragg case. A method for incorporating the influence of surface potential and structure has been proposed.

Abstract:A slab method for dynamical RHEED calculations from the surface of a semi-infinite crystal is developed. This method is based on an old idea of McRae [Surf. Sci. (1968), 11, 479-491], who proposed that in LEED Bloch waves characterizing the bulk crystal may be obtained by diagonalizing the scattering matrix associated with a repeating bulk crystal slab. However, a direct implementation of this idea for dynamical RHEED calculation may result in divergent results. It is shown that this problem may be overcome by the method of Bethe potentials and the results obtained using the method of combined McRae and Bethe potentials are in good agreement with exact dynamical RHEED calculations.

Abstract:Bloch wave equations for the multiple beam cases in reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) are derived from the integral equation by forward- and back-scattering Green function operators. A linearization is achieved through separation in a forward- and a back-scattering component for each beam. This leads to a set of fundamental equations similar to the transmission case, but with a non-Hermitian matrix, and the beams may be entered as either forward-, back-scattered, or both. The number of beams needed to be included in RHEED calculations is thus reduced, and so are the computing time and computer space required. The systematic row case, corresponding to reflections from planes parallel to the crystal surface, is treated in detail and illustrated by calculations of dispersion surfaces and rocking curves for Au(001). Symmetry relations for the systematic row and between reciprocal rows are discussed and illustrated.

Abstract:A computing method for the forward dynamical scattering calculations which has been successfully applied to the Bragg case of high energy electron diffraction is described. This method is based on the physical optics theory of dynamical diffraction of Cowley and Moodie and is used for calculations of reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) diffraction amplitudes and the reflection electron microscopy (REM) image intensities for the extended surface of a perfect crystal and also for a crystal surface with a defect. The physical basis of the method and some practical computing considerations are described.

Abstract:The electromagnetic modeling of practical finite periodic structures is a topic of growing interest. Due to the truncation of infinite periodic structures, surface waves will be excited and localized near discontinuous interfaces leading to the edge effect. In this work, surface waves are numerically extracted and their magnitudes and decay rates are analyzed for different materials and geometries. Based on the exponential decay of the surface wave, a novel method is developed by connecting the solution to the large finite array problem with that to a relatively small one to achieve low complexity and memory consumption. The method numerically reconstructs propagating Bloch waves and surface waves according to the Bloch-Floquet theorem of periodic structures and translation invariant properties of semi-infinite periodic structures, respectively. Numerical examples are shown for near-field distributions and far-field radiation patterns. The results obtained from small finite periodic structures capture the edge effect and agree well with the results by the rigorous element-by-element approach.

Abstract:Surface resonance scattering in RHEED is shown to result from Bloch wave degeneracy, which gives singular Bloch wave excitations and an anomaly in the surface reflected beam amplitudes. The minimum condition for the resonance to occur is that two reciprocal lattice rods are involved, and the involvement of bound states of atomic planes parallel to the surface is not necessary. The concept of Bloch wave degeneracy has been applied to explain resonance scattering occurring either in the selvedge or/and in the substrate. When the diffraction condition has been so chosen that the diffraction processes are dominated by two reciprocal lattice rods, the total electron wave function is shown to be highly localized at the surface. In a general case when many reciprocal lattice rods are involved, the total electron wave function may or may not be localized, depending on the diffraction condition

Abstract:The general matrix formulation developed in a previous paper for calculating dynamical electron diffraction from an assembly of crystal slabs and reflection from surfaces of semi-infinite bulk crystals is used to investigate the effects of surface layers scattering on RHEED reflected beam amplitudes. The general computing procedure is illustrated by reference to a symmetric two-beam and a general four-beam Bragg case. Applications are made to crystal systems containing relaxed or reconstructed surface layers.

Abstract:The Bethe potentials method which takes account of the effect of weak beams on the strong beams has been incorporated into dynamical RHEED calculations. It is shown that this method works in RHEED geometry and is particularly efficient for dealing with high order zero-order Laue zone beams, beams of higher-order Laue zones and evanescent beams which lie far away from the Laue circle and which are difficult to include in conventional dynamical RHEED calculations. Numerical examples are given for RHEED from an Ag(001) surface, and the results show that the method of Bethe potentials provides an efficient and accurate way of evaluation of RHEED intensities, speeding up computations many times.

Abstract:The multislice method of calculating dynamical diffraction is based on the physical optics theory of Cowley and Moodie, which has been shown is equivalent to the quantum theory, back scattering being neglected. This method is capable of the calculation of RHEED diffraction amplitudes and the REM image simulation provided that the surface structure and surface potential have been properly modeled. The procedure for RHEED and REM calculations used her,e is basically the same as the conventional multislice calculation. The periodic continuation assumption has been employed to include the desired model surface (Fig. 1). A large dimension normal to the surface must be used so that there is no interference between these extended unit cells. The choice of the specimen thickness depends on the competition between the requirements for short computing time and larger model surface required to simulate the real equilibrium diffraction processes.

Abstract:Approximate methods have been examined in the context of dynamical reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) calculations using two-dimensional Bloch waves. These approximate methods include Bethe potentials, the utilization of the block structure of the scattering matrix and the perturbation treatment of anomalous absorption effects. It is shown that the use of Bethe potentials provides a very efficient and accurate means for dealing with evanescent waves and numerical examples show that the use of Bethe potentials speeds up the calculations typically more than 15 times. The other two methods examined are less powerful and the improvement in computation efficiency varies from 30 to 60%. It is found that in general the perturbation method for dealing with anomalous absorption effects does not work with high precision.

Abstract:The physical nature of the sharpness and weakness of surface superlattice spots in reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and the validity of the kinematical approximation for analyzing the intensities of the superlattice spots are examined, using a Bloch-wave formulation of the dynamical theory of RHEED. It is found that although it is adequate to treat surface superlattice diffraction kinematically within the selvedge, a kinematical analysis of RHEED intensities of superlattice spots is not in general valid, unless some criteria are satisfied. These include a projection approximation for the superlattice in the selvedge, a glancing incidence such that no diffracted beams other than the incident and specularly reflected beams are excited in both the selvedge and the underlying bulk crystal.

Abstract:The Bohmian trajectory method is employed to study electron diffraction in crystalline materials. It provides a fresh understanding of the process of electron diffraction, including traveling channels of electrons and formation of diffraction patterns. By combining it with the Bloch wave method, the electron trajectories can be calculated more efficiently than the traditional wave-packet propagation algorithm. Meanwhile, we propose a momentum expectation approach which is a good approximation method with even higher computational efficiency. Both methods result in intuitive and accurate electron trajectories for the simulation of the electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) pattern. Excellent agreement has been obtained between the simulated trajectory distributions and the experimental EBSD pattern from Mo (001) at 20 kV, where the Kikuchi patterns and higher order Laue zone rings are characterized.

Abstract:Detailed dynamical calculations for reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) from surfaces growing by molecular beam epitaxy have been made to investigate the technique of growth interruption and surface recovery kinetics. A birth-death growth model and a systematic reflection approximation to RHEED have been used. It is found that whilst the RHEED intensity oscillation behaviour is very sensitive to the incident glancing angle, the shape of the intensity recovery curve is insensitive to the diffraction condition. It is further shown that the RHEED intensity recovery curves bear a resemblance to the corresponding surface-roughness recovery curves. Sensible quantitative studies of recovery can therefore be made by analysing the RHEED intensity recovery curves. A similarity between the surface recovery and RHEED intensity recovery has been established.

Abstract:Reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) is a powerful tool for characterizing crystal surface structures. However, the setup geometry leads to distorted and complicated patterns, which are not straightforward to link to the real-space structures. A program with a graphical user interface is provided here to simulate the RHEED patterns. Following the Ewald construction in the kinematic theory, we find out the exact geometric transformation in this model that determines the positions of diffraction spots. The program can deal with many forms of surface structures, including surface reconstructions or domains. The simulations exhibit great agreement with the experimental results in various cases. This program will benefit the structure analysis in thin film growth and surface science studies.

The Derivation of Bloch Waves in the Reflection Case: Analytical Solutions and Numerical Calculations

Abstract:The Bloch wave description of electron diffraction was originally derived with reflection experiments in mind, but has since been applied mainly to the transmission case, where the neglect of back scattering leads to an eigenvalue equation for the anpassung, γ, and eigenvectors (Bloch waves). In the reflection case such an approximation can not be made, γ will appear in second order. A general solution was formulated in terms of 2N Bloch waves which are obtained as non-orthogonal eigenvectors of a non-Hermitian matrix by Colella and Moon. Due to this added complexity there has been little discussion of Bloch wave solutions and properties pertaining to reflection electron diffraction – most calculations are based on integration procedures normal to or parallel to the surface.We have studied the derivation of Bloch wave solutions in the reflection case by starting from the equation for scattering ,using one greens function operators for forward scattering (Z>Z’)

Abstract:The general formalism of the optical potential method has been applied to the problem Of reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) from the rough surface of a crystal. For the case where short-range disorder dominates an explicit analytical expression for the effective absorption potential has been obtained, and procedures for evaluating this potential have been developed which utilize the conventional approaches and computer routines developed earlier for transmission high energy electron diffraction (THEED). This potential has been combined with dynamical RHEED calculations for a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growing surface. It is found that under certain circumstances the optical potential due to the roughness of the MBE growing surface has an appreciable effect on the shape of the corresponding RHEED rocking curve.

Abstract:A practical computing procedure has been developed for calculating RHEED from MBE growing surfaces. A generalized birth-death growth model has been used to describe MBE growth, and the diffraction from MBE growing surfaces is treated dynamically. Our method is shown to be able to reproduce almost all features of measured RHEED intensity oscillations from low-index surfaces.

Abstract:A method based on the Fast Fourier Transform is proposed to obtain the dispersion relation of acoustic waves in heterogeneous periodic media with arbitrary microstructures. The microstructure is explicitly considered using a voxelized Representative Volume Element (RVE). The dispersion diagram is obtained solving an eigenvalue problem for Bloch waves in Fourier space. To this aim, two linear operators representing stiffness and mass are defined through the use of differential operators in Fourier space. The smallest eigenvalues are obtained using the implicitly restarted Lanczos and the subspace iteration methods, and the required inverse of the stiffness operator is done using the conjugate gradient with a preconditioner. The method is used to study the propagation of acoustic waves in elastic polycrystals, showing the strong effect of crystal anistropy and polycrystaline texture on the propagation. It is shown that the method combines the simplicity of classical Fourier series analysis with the versatility of Finite Elements to account for complex geometries proving an efficient and general approach which allows the use of large RVEs in 3D.

Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements

Abstract:The boundary element method (BEM) is presented to calculate the band-structure of three-dimensional fluid/fluid and solid/solid phononic crystals first time. The frequency-independent fundamental solutions are used as weight functions for deriving integral equations in a unit cell, which can avoid the related nonlinear eigenvalue problems. The dual reciprocity method is employed to handle the domain integral terms, thereby achieving dimensionality reduction. To overcome the drawback of dense matrices in BEM, the boundary physical fields are approximated by using the tensor product B-spline wavelet on the interval and wavelet coefficients. Small entries in system matrices, which are yielded by the vanishing moment property of wavelets, are dropped through the truncation technique. By combining Bloch's theorem and interface continuity conditions, we acquire the generalized eigenvalue equations of depending on an angular frequency. The band-structure can be determined by looping through Bloch wave vectors of interest and solving the eigenvalue equations. Comparing to the finite element method, the present method holds a decided advantage in computational accuracy and efficiency. The sparse system matrices obtained using the truncation technique not only reduce the memory requirements, but also have little impact on the required results.

Abstract:Reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) has become well established as one of the most powerful and versatile techniques for growth and surface studies of semiconductor films prepared by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). In particular the technique of RHEED intensity oscillations has been used routinely to calibrate beam fluxes and alloys composition and to control the thicknesses of quantum wells and superlattice layers.Although several interpretations have been proposed for the strong oscillations in RHEED intensity during MBE growth, full dynamical calculations have been done only for an artificial surface consisting of a periodic array of surface steps. The enormous amount of computation involved prevents the dynamical theory being applied to a more realistic epitaxically growing system. In this paper we report a simple and practical method for calculating dynamical RHEED from MBE growing surfaces.We first consider epitaxial growth on a low-index surface. The growth is simulated by using a perfect layer growth model and a diffusive growth model.
