Abstract:Multistimuli-responsive conductive hydrogels have been appealing candidates for multifunctional ionic skin. However, the fabrication of the multistimuli-responsive conductive hydrogels with satisfactory mechanical property to meet the practical applications is still a great challenge. In this study, a novel poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-sodium acrylate)/alginate/hectorite clay Laponite XLS (PNIPAM-SA/ALG/XLS) double cross-linked hydrogel with excellent mechanical property, self-recovery ability, temperature/pH-responsive ability, and strain/temperature-sensitive conductivity was fabricated. The PNSAX hydrogel possessed a moderate tensile strength of 290 kPa at a large elongation rate of 1120% and an excellent compression strength of 2.72 MPa at 90%. The hydrogel also possessed excellent mechanical repeatability and self-recovery ability. Thus, the hydrogel could withstand repetitive deformations for long time periods. Additionally, the hydrogel could change its transparency and volume once at a temperature of 44 °C and change its volume at different pHs. Thus, the visual temperature/pH-responsive ability allowed the hydrogel to qualitatively harvest environmental information. Moreover, the hydrogel possessed an excellent conductivity of 0.43 S/m, and the hydrogel could transform large/subtle deformation and temperature information into electrical signal change. Thus, the ultrafast strain/temperature-sensitive conductivity allowed the hydrogel to quantitatively detect large/small-scale human motions as well as environmental temperature. A cytotoxicity test confirmed the good cytocompatibility. Taken together, the hydrogel was suitable for human motion detecting and environmental information harvesting for long time periods. Therefore, the hydrogel has a great application potential as a multifunctional ionic skin and smart sensor.

Abstract:Flexible wearable devices have achieved remarkable applications in health monitoring because of the advantages of multisignal collecting and real-time wireless transmission of information. However, the integration of bulky sensing elements and rigid metal circuit components in traditional wearable devices may lead to a mechanical and signal-conducting mismatch between wearable devices and biological tissues, thus restricting their wide applications in the human body. The excellent mechanical properties, conductivity, and high tissue resemblance of conductive hydrogel contribute to its application in flexible electronic sensors to monitor human health. In this work, a dual-network, temperature-responsive ionic conductive hydrogel with excellent stretchability, fast temperature responsiveness, and good conductivity was developed by introducing a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/ tannic acid (TA)/ Fe3+ cross-linked network into the N,N-methylene diacrylamide (MBAA) cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) (P(NIPAAm-co-AM)) network. Furthermore, the introduction of the PVP/TA/Fe3+ cross-linked network endowed the hydrogel with excellent stretchability and conductivity. By adjusting the molar ratio of TA and Fe3+ to 3:5, a hydrogel with a maximal stretching ratio of 720% and sensitive strain response (GF = 3.61) was achieved, showing a promising application in wearable strain sensors to monitor both large and fine human motions. Moreover, by introducing PNIPAAm with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST), the hydrogel may be used to monitor the environmental temperature through the temperature-conductivity responsiveness, which can be applied as a wearable temperature sensor to detect fever or tissue hyperthermia in the human body.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have attracted a myriad of interest due to their potential applications for human motion monitoring, personal healthcare diagnosis and so forth. However, fabrication of hydrogel-based strain sensors integrating with ultrastretchability, adhesiveness, strain sensitivity, biocompatibility, and self-cleaning function is still a challenge. Herein, a new type of semi-interpenetrating multifunctional hydrogels, which integrated all above practical features magically were prepared via a facile one-pot in-situ radical copolymerization method. Thereinto, [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA) and acrylamide (AAm) copolymers cross-linked byN,N '-Methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) served as the soft and functional matrix, whereas alginate was employed as the enhanced component. The transparent zwitterionic hydrogels had a max elongation and ionic conductivity of 1353% and 0.15 S/m, respectively. They could adhere onto various surfaces, including steel, glass, skin, and rubber. The repeatable adhesiveness, linear strain sensitivity within 0%-250% tensile strain and 0%-30% compressive strain provided remarkable working range and using stability. What's more notable was that the biocompatibility and self-cleaning function tested by MTT, live/dead assay, allergy patch tests, and plate colony-counting method imparted great possibility of practical application for strain sensors to hydrogels from a biological point of view.
A temperature responsive adhesive hydrogel for fabrication of flexible electronic sensors

Abstract:Flexible electronics are playing an increasingly important role in human health monitoring and healthcare diagnosis. Strong adhesion on human tissue would be ideal for reducing interface resistance and motion artifacts, but arising problems such as skin irritation, rubefaction, and pain upon device removal have hampered their utility. Here, inspired by the temperature reversibility of hydrogen bonding, a skin-friendly conductive hydrogel with multiple-hydrogen bonds was designed by using biocompatible poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), phytic acid (PA), and gelatin (Gel). The obtained PVA/PA/Gel (PPG) hydrogel with temperature-triggered tunable mechanic could reliably adhere to skin and detect electrophysiological signals under a hot compress while be readily removed under a cool compress. Furthermore, the additional advantages of transparency, breathability, and antimicrobial activity of the PPG hydrogel ensure its long-time wearable value on the skin. It is both environmentally friendly and cost saving for the waste PPG hydrogel during production can be recycled based on their reversible physical bonding. The PPG hydrogel sensor is expected to have good application prospects to record electrophysiological signals in human health monitoring.

Ultrafast Self‐Healing, Superstretchable, and Ultra‐Strong Polymer Cluster‐Based Adhesive Based on Aromatic Acid Cross‐Linkers for Excellent Hydrogel Strain Sensors

Abstract:Instant, simultaneous oxidation and polymerization approach is developed to prepare polymer cluster based hydrogels with aromatic acids as supramolecular cross‐linkers. The optimized hydrogel displays excellent mechanical and electrical performance including ultrafast self‐healing, superstretchability, high uniformity, and conductivity, which satisfactorily serves as strain sensors with high sensitivity and temperature tolerance even under water. Synthetic hydrogel strain sensors rarely exhibit a comprehensive combination of mechanical properties such as ultra‐stretchability, ultrafast self‐healing, and high sensitivity. Herein, seven small molecule enhanced mechanical behaviors of polymer‐cluster based hydrogels are demonstrated. The oxidized polyethyleneimine/polymeric acrylic acid (ohPEI/PAA) hydrogels with aromatic formic acids as supramolecular cross‐linkers are prepared by simultaneous formation of ohPEI polymer clusters and PAA upon the addition of ammonium persulfate. The optimized hydrogel adhesive exhibits comprehensive excellent properties, such as high extensibility (up to 12 298%), real‐time mechanical self‐healing capability (<1 s, 93% efficiency), high uniformity, underwater adhesivity, and water‐sealing ability. The proper binding strength of hydrogel and skin (47 kPa) allows the hydrogel to be utilized as highly sensitive (gauge factor:16.08), highly conductive (2.58 mS cm−1), and underwater strain sensors. Specially, the adhesive strength of the adhesive to wood after dehydration is extremely high, reaching up to 29.59 MPa. Additionally, when glycerol is introduced, the obtained gel maintains the physical properties even at harsh‐temperature conditions (−40 to 80 °C). It presents that multiple and hierarchical non‐covalent interactions including multiple hydrogen bonding interactions, π–π stacking, electrostatic interactions, and dipole–dipole interactions of polymer clusters, allow for the energy dissipation and contribute to the excellent performance of the hydrogel.

Abstract:Currently, flexible and conductive hydrogels have become promising materials for wearable strain sensors. However, adhering to skin seamlessly without any adhesive tape or bandage still remains a challenge. Moreover, the transparency of hydrogel was highly desired for satisfying the diverse requirement of electronic devices. Here, an adhesive polyacrylamide hydrogel driven by amino acids was designed by using lysine. The lysine-mediated hydrogel exhibited excellent adhesive behavior for diverse material substrates (e.g., metal, stainless steel, plastic, glass, rubber, silica rubber) and even for skin. The maximum peeling strength of hydrogel on aluminium could achieve 202.2 N/m, which exceeded that of PAAm hydrogel with 36.4 N/m. Intriguingly, by introducing lithium chloride into the system, the adhesive hydrogel exhibited high conductivity (0.0736 S/cm), transparency (92%) and freezing-resistant property (-31.8 degrees C). Moreover, the hydrogel-based strain sensor could be sensitive to both large activities (e.g., joint bending) and tiny motions (e.g., swallowing, speaking and breathing). This work provided an inspiration for the design of novel adhesive and conductive hydrogels as flexible strain sensors.

Abstract:Currently, conductive hydrogels have received great attention as flexible strain sensors. However, the preparation of such sensors with integrated stretchability, transparency, and self-healing properties into one gel through a simple method still remains a huge challenge. Here, a fully physically crosslinked double network hydrogel was developed based on poly(hydroxyethyl acrylamide) (PHEAA) and κ-carrageenan (Car). The driving forces for physical gelation were hydrogen bonds, ion bonding, and electrostatic interactions. The resultant PHEAA-Car hydrogel displayed stretchability (1145%) and optical transparency (92%). Meanwhile, the PHEAA-Car hydrogel exhibited a self-healing property at 25 °C. Additionally, the PHEAA-Car hydrogel-based strain sensor could monitor different joint movements. Based on the above functions, the PHEAA-Car hydrogel can be applied in flexible strain sensors.

Abstract:The design of polyelectrolyte hydrogel with unique tensile and adhesive properties which can be applied across disciplines has gradually become a popular trend. However, the phenomenon of global warming and the emergence of extreme weather, it still faces some urgent problems that should be solved, such as the optimal utilization of polyelectrolyte hydrogel across a wide range of temperatures. Herein, a wide temperature sensitivity and conductivity hydrogel based on sodium alginate, acrylamide and N-isopropylacrylamide was constructed, which exhibited excellent adhesion and temperature conductivity. It is worth noting that after the inclusion of CaCO3 and NaCl in the hydrogel, the hydrogel showed excellent tensile properties (fracture strain >2000 %). Within a wide temperature range (-15-50 °C), it exhibits exceptional electrical conductivity (2.75 S ∗ m-1) and sensitivity (GF = 8.76 under high strain). This innovative intelligent polyelectrolyte hydrogel provides suitable strategy for flexible sensors, smart wearable devices and medical monitoring equipment.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have attracted widespread attention because of their integrated characteristics of being stretchable, deformable, adhesive, self-healable, and conductive. Herein, we report a highly conductive and tough double-network hydrogel based on a double cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAAM) and sodium alginate (SA) network with conducting polypyrrole nanospheres (PPy NSs) uniformly distributed in the network (PAAM-SA-PPy NSs). SA was employed as a soft template for synthesis of PPy NSs and distribution of PPy NSs uniformly in the hydrogel matrix to construct SA-PPy conductive network. The PAAM-SA-PPy NS hydrogel exhibited both high electrical conductivity (6.44 S/m) and excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength of 560 kPa at 870 %), as along as high toughness, high biocompatibility, good self-healing and adhesion properties. The assembled strain sensors showed high sensitivity and a wide sensing range (a gauge factor of 1.89 for 0-400 % strain and 4.53 for 400-800 % strain, respectively), as well as fast responsiveness and reliable stability. When used as a wearable strain sensor, it was able to monitor a series of physical signals from human large-scale joint motions and subtle muscle movements. This work provides a new strategy for the development of electronic skins and flexible strain sensors.

Abstract:Flexible and stretchable strain sensors can be applied for human health monitoring and disease diagnoses via the output of multiple biophysical signals. However, it is still a challenge to fabricate short-peptide-based strain sensors. Here, we prepared a novel polymer-dipeptide double-network hydrogel with excellent stretchability, responsiveness, and stability. The poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) gel, by cross-linking, maintains mechanical and flexible properties, and the fluorenyl methoxycarbonyl-diphenylalanine (Fmoc-FF) network, by non-covalent interactions, is helpful for energy dissipation. With increasing tensile or compression strains, the PAA/Fmoc-FF hydrogel exhibited a high mechanical strength and fast recovery. Moreover, as the presence of KCl improves the electronic conductivity, the hybrid gel exhibited a cyclic strain-stress performance, which is the foundation of a strain sensor. Based on that, its application as a motion sensor was demonstrated by monitoring the movements of human joints, such as the forefinger, wrist, elbow, and knee. Consequently, the hybrid polymer-peptide gel could be an ideal candidate for wearable sensors in the future.

Abstract:The skin‐inspired multifunctional conductive hydrogels prepared by convenient one‐step covalent cross‐linking method enhanced by dynamic RS─Ag interactions with highly sensitive dual‐sensing of temperature and strain exhibited extremely high mechanical properties, excellent self‐healing, decomposition, and self‐adhesion. The hydrogel demonstrated the most various simulation of human skin's physicochemical properties and sensing capabilities. Developing smart hydrogels with excellent physicochemical properties and multi‐sensing capabilities for various simulation of human skin's functions still remains a great challenge. Here, based on simple and convenient one‐step covalent cross‐linking method enhanced by dynamic RS‐Ag interactions, a skin‐inspired multifunctional conductive hydrogel with desirable physicochemical properties (including high stretchability, self‐adhesion, self‐healing, decomposition and removability) is developed for highly sensitive dual‐sensing of temperature and strain. Benefiting from the synergistic action of multiple hydrogen bonds, RS‐Ag bonds and S‐S bonds, the gel exhibited a novel thermosensitive mechanism. The prepared hydrogels exhibited extremely high mechanical properties (maximum tensile strength of 0.35 MPa, elongation at break nearly 1800%, compressive stress over 4.43 MPa), excellent self‐healing (96.82% (stress), 88.45% (temperature), 73.89% (mechanical property)), decomposition (the molecular weight after decomposition is below 700) and self‐adhesion (enhanced contact with the material interface). In addition, this conductive hydrogel could also simultaneously achieve highly sensitive temperature‐sensing (TCR: 10.89) and stress‐sensing (GF: 1.469). As a proof‐to‐concept, the hydrogel displayed superior capability for simulation of human skin to perception of touch, pressure and ambient temperature simultaneously, indicating promising applications in the fields of wearable devices, personal health care, and human‐machine interfaces.

Abstract:The development of wearable devices, soft robots, and electronic skin requires strain sensors that integrate multiple functionalities, such as being stretchable, self-healing, and biocompatible. In this work, we prepared a fully aromatic polyamic acid salt (PAAs) hydrogel using a novel and simple approach. This study describes an environmentally friendly and green synthetic method for synthesizing. The obtained PAAs hydrogel exhibits excellent stretch ability and has an elongation rate of about 1350%. It can also rapidly complete self-healing and return to the original mechanical strength without needing any external stimuli. In addition, the PAAs hydrogel has excellent temperature responsiveness. When used as a strain sensor, the PAAs hydrogel has a sensitive electrical resistance response even after 200 cycles and adhesiveness to various surfaces, especially human skin. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to prepare a high-performance polyimide (PI) precursor hydrogel that can be used as a raw material for PI aerogel. Because of its superb overall performance, low preparation cost, efficient preparation, and environmentally friendliness, the PAAs hydrogel is highly suitable for use as sensitive strain sensors for applications in motion detection.
Stretchable, Self-Healing, and Bioactive Hydrogel with High-Functionality N,N-bis(acryloyl)cystamine Dynamically Bonded Ag@polydopamine Crosslinkers for Wearable Sensors

Abstract:Hydrogels present attractive opportunities as flexible sensors due to their soft nature and tunable physicochemical properties. Despite significant advances, practical application of hydrogel-based sensor is limited by the lack of general routes to fabricate materials with combination of mechanical, conductive, and biological properties. Here, a multi-functional hydrogel sensor is reported by in situ polymerizing of acrylamide (AM) with N,N'-bis(acryloyl)cystamine (BA) dynamic crosslinked silver-modified polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles, namely PAM/BA-Ag@PDA. Compared with traditional polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel, the BA-Ag@PDA nanoparticles provide both high-functionality crosslinks and multiple interactions within PAM networks, thereby endowing the optimized PAM/BA-Ag@PDA hydrogel with significantly enhanced tensile/compressive strength (349.80 kPa at 383.57% tensile strain, 263.08 kPa at 90% compressive strain), lower hysteresis (5.2%), improved conductivity (2.51 S m-1) and excellent near-infrared (NIR) light-triggered self-healing ability. As a strain sensor, the PAM/BA-Ag@PDA hydrogel shows a good sensitivity (gauge factor of 1.86), rapid response time (138 ms), and high stability. Owing to abundant reactive groups in PDA, the PAM/BA-Ag@PDA hydrogel exhibits inherent tissue adhesiveness and antioxidant, along with a synergistic antibacterial effect by PDA and Ag. Toward practical applications, the PAM/BA-Ag@PDA hydrogel can conformally adhere to skin and monitor subtle activities and large-scale movements with excellent reliability, demonstrating its promising applications as wearable sensors for healthcare.
Highly Stretchable, Self-Healable, Freezing-Tolerant, and Transparent Polyacrylic Acid/Nanochitin Composite Hydrogel for Self-Powered Multifunctional Sensors

Abstract:To fulfill the current challenges in the hydrogel applications in wearable sensors including low sensitivity, lack of self-healing ability, and non-transparency, we synthesized a polyacrylic acid/nanochitin composite hydrogel with dual cross-linking networks for highly stretchable, transparent, self-healing, and anti-freezing sensors via an eco-friendly method. Dynamic metal-coordination bonds between Al<sup>3+</sup> and carboxyl groups and the hydrogen bonds contributed to the excellent self-healing efficiency of the hydrogel (97%). The dual cross-linking networks provide the composite hydrogel with 400 kPa tensile strength. The hydrogel-based sensors could detect multiple external stimuli, demonstrating a high gauge factor of 2.36 with the strain range of 0–500% and an ultrabroad temperature detection range (−35 to 50 °C). Significantly, the composite hydrogel demonstrates an ultrasensitive thermal response with a sensitivity of 252 %/°C during the cooling process. Moreover, the composite hydrogel was also assembled into a triboelectric nanogenerator to act as a self-powered pressure sensor. Drying-enhanced Polyvinyl Alcohol-Polyacrylic Acid Double-Network Hydrogel and Its Application in Flexible Strain Sensors

Abstract:Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based hydrogels, are generally prepared by freeze-thaw cycling methods. However, water loss and shrinkage of the gel over time should be prevented during the freeze-thaw cycles. Herein, a polyvinyl alcohol-polyacrylic acid (PVA-PAA) double-network hydrogel was fabricated through the strategy of ''freezing-drying-swelling" (FDS) cycle, where the moisture retention was unnecessary. By a freezing-drying treatment, the formation of PVA crystalline domains and hydrogen bonds in freezing step was further improved by the drying treatment, and subsequently enhanced the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. The FDS hydrogel with the cross-linker content of 0.1% and one FDS cycle (FDS-0.1-1) could reach the ultimate tensile stress as high as 1.1 MPa with high stretchability of 648% strain. Thanks to the combination of PAA and conductive ions, the FDS-0.1-1 hydrogel strain sensor possessed excellent conductivity with a wide strain monitoring range of 0-250%, high sensitivity with a gauge factor (GF) up to 3.985, a fast response (75 ms) and excellent long-term stability without any decay for 5000 cycles of continuous loading-unloading between 0 and 100% strain. Besides, the FDS hydrogel strain sensor can be used for real-time monitoring various movements of the human body, including large movements (finger, wrists, elbows, and back of the neck) and subtle motions (smile and swallow). Abstract:Skin-like body sensors have important applications in soft-bodied intelligent robots, electronic skins, and medical health monitoring. Accurate sensing of pressure and temperature are two core elements of skin-like sensors that mimic skins. Skin-like sensors convert sensed external stimuli such as pressure and temperature into electrical signals, enabling visual monitoring of external environmental stimuli. However, there are very limited reports on hydrogels-based and dual stimuli-responsive (strain/temperature) sensors. To this end, we report a highly flexible strain/temperature dual stimuli-responsive sensor based on poly(acrylamide) (PAAM) hydrogels. Our prepared conductive ionic hydrogels are endowed with the ability to undergo phase changes at different temperatures by introducing inexpensive and stable sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) thermotropic phase-change units, which can turn from opaque to transparent within 10 s when temperature is increased, and to opaque again when temperature is decreased. In this study, we have succeeded in producing a dual-responsive multifunctional ionic conductive hydrogel (SN-PAAM) that is responsive to temperature/strain dual stimuli and has excellent mechanical properties: high tensile strength (581 kPa), extra long elongation (1,836%), high sensitivity (GF = 1.62 to 2.46), and short response time (120 to 130 ms). To the best of our knowledge, these combined functions are not achievable with conventional strategies. Therefore, the hydrogels developed in this research could have good prospects for different applications such as flexible wearable devices, skin-like sensors, visualization of bionic skins, dual response interactive devices, and in the field of anti-counterfeiting and encryption.

Abstract:Nowadays, conductive hydrogels show significant prospects as strain sensors due to their good stretchability and signal transduction abilities. However, traditional hydrogels possess poor anti-freezing performance at low temperatures owing to the large number of water molecules, which limits their application scope. To date, constructing a hydrogel-based sensor with balanced stretchability, conductivity, transparency, and anti-freezing properties via simple methods has proven challenging. Here, a fully physically crosslinked poly(hydroxyethyl acrylamide)–glycerol–sodium chloride (PHEAA–Gl–NaCl) hydrogel was obtained by polymerizing hydroxyethyl acrylamide in deionized water and then soaking it in a saturated NaCl solution of glycerol and water. The PHEAA–Gl–NaCl hydrogel had good transparency (~93%), stretchability (~1300%), and fracture stress (~287 kPa). Owing to the presence of glycerol and sodium chloride, the PHEAA–Gl–NaCl hydrogel had good anti-freezing properties and conductivity. Furthermore, the PHEAA–Gl–NaCl hydrogel-based strain sensor possessed good sensitivity and cyclic stability, enabling the detection of different human motions stably and in a wide temperature range. Based on the above characteristics, the PHEAA–Gl–NaCl hydrogel has broad application prospects in flexible electronic materials.

Abstract:A strand entangled supramolecular polyacrylic acid/polyaniline (PAA/PANI) hydrogel is developed via a "doping then gelling" strategy. The designed high‐density electrostatic interaction between PAA and PANI chains endows the PAA/PANI hydrogel with ultra‐stretchability (2830%) and rapid self‐healing properties, thus achieving high strain sensitivity (GF = 12.63) for precisely monitoring human movements. Hydrogel electronics have attracted growing interest for emerging applications in personal healthcare management, human‐machine interaction, etc. Herein, a "doping then gelling" strategy to synthesize supramolecular PANI/PAA hydrogel with a specific strand entangled network is proposed, by doping the PANI with acrylic acid (AA) monomers to avoid PANI aggregation. The high‐density electrostatic interaction between PAA and PANI chains serves as a dynamic bond to initiate the strand entanglement, enabling PAA/PANI hydrogel with ultra‐stretchability (2830%), high breaking strength (120 kPa), and rapid self‐healing properties. Moreover, the PAA/PANI hydrogel‐based sensor with a high strain sensitivity (gauge factor = 12.63), a rapid responding time (222 ms), and a robust conductivity‐based sensing behavior under cyclic stretching is developed. A set of strain sensing applications to precisely monitor human movements is also demonstrated, indicating a promising application prospect as wearable devices.
