Abstract:Flexible wearable devices have achieved remarkable applications in health monitoring because of the advantages of multisignal collecting and real-time wireless transmission of information. However, the integration of bulky sensing elements and rigid metal circuit components in traditional wearable devices may lead to a mechanical and signal-conducting mismatch between wearable devices and biological tissues, thus restricting their wide applications in the human body. The excellent mechanical properties, conductivity, and high tissue resemblance of conductive hydrogel contribute to its application in flexible electronic sensors to monitor human health. In this work, a dual-network, temperature-responsive ionic conductive hydrogel with excellent stretchability, fast temperature responsiveness, and good conductivity was developed by introducing a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/ tannic acid (TA)/ Fe3+ cross-linked network into the N,N-methylene diacrylamide (MBAA) cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) (P(NIPAAm-co-AM)) network. Furthermore, the introduction of the PVP/TA/Fe3+ cross-linked network endowed the hydrogel with excellent stretchability and conductivity. By adjusting the molar ratio of TA and Fe3+ to 3:5, a hydrogel with a maximal stretching ratio of 720% and sensitive strain response (GF = 3.61) was achieved, showing a promising application in wearable strain sensors to monitor both large and fine human motions. Moreover, by introducing PNIPAAm with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST), the hydrogel may be used to monitor the environmental temperature through the temperature-conductivity responsiveness, which can be applied as a wearable temperature sensor to detect fever or tissue hyperthermia in the human body.
Evidence of an association between genetic variation of the coactivator PGC-1 b and obesity

Abstract:Background: Peroxisome proliferator activated receptor- c coactivator-1 b (PGC-1 b ) is a recently identified homologue of the tissue specific coactivator PGC-1 a , a coactivator of transcription factors such as the peroxisome proliferators activated receptors and nuclear respiratory factors. PGC-1 a is involved in adipogenesis, mitochondrial biogenesis, fatty acid b oxidation, and hepatic gluconeogenesis. Methods: We studied variation in the coding region of human PPARGC1B in Danish whites and related these variations to the prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes in population based samples. Results: Twenty nucleotide variants were identified. In a study of 525 glucose tolerant subjects, the Ala203Pro and Val279Ile variants were in almost complete linkage disequilibrium (R 2 =0.958). In a case– control study of obesity involving a total of 7790 subjects, the 203Pro allele was significantly less frequent among obese participants (p=0.004; minor allele frequencies: normal weight subjects 8.1% (95% confidence interval: 7.5 to 8.8), overweight subjects 7.6% (7.0 to 8.3), obese subjects 6.5% (5.6 to 7.3)). In a case–control study involving 1433 patients with type 2 diabetes and 4935 glucose tolerant control subjects, none of the examined variants were associated with type 2 diabetes. Conclusions: Variation of PGC-1 b may contribute to the pathogenesis of obesity, with a widespread Ala203 allele being a risk factor for the development of this common disorder.
Fabrication of Alginate‐p(sbma‐co‐aam) Hydrogels with Ultrastretchability, Strain Sensitivity, Self‐adhesiveness, Biocompatibility, and Self‐cleaning Function for Strain Sensors

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have attracted a myriad of interest due to their potential applications for human motion monitoring, personal healthcare diagnosis and so forth. However, fabrication of hydrogel-based strain sensors integrating with ultrastretchability, adhesiveness, strain sensitivity, biocompatibility, and self-cleaning function is still a challenge. Herein, a new type of semi-interpenetrating multifunctional hydrogels, which integrated all above practical features magically were prepared via a facile one-pot in-situ radical copolymerization method. Thereinto, [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA) and acrylamide (AAm) copolymers cross-linked byN,N '-Methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) served as the soft and functional matrix, whereas alginate was employed as the enhanced component. The transparent zwitterionic hydrogels had a max elongation and ionic conductivity of 1353% and 0.15 S/m, respectively. They could adhere onto various surfaces, including steel, glass, skin, and rubber. The repeatable adhesiveness, linear strain sensitivity within 0%-250% tensile strain and 0%-30% compressive strain provided remarkable working range and using stability. What's more notable was that the biocompatibility and self-cleaning function tested by MTT, live/dead assay, allergy patch tests, and plate colony-counting method imparted great possibility of practical application for strain sensors to hydrogels from a biological point of view.
Multistimuli-Responsive PNIPAM-Based Double Cross-Linked Conductive Hydrogel with Self-Recovery Ability for Ionic Skin and Smart Sensor.

Abstract:Multistimuli-responsive conductive hydrogels have been appealing candidates for multifunctional ionic skin. However, the fabrication of the multistimuli-responsive conductive hydrogels with satisfactory mechanical property to meet the practical applications is still a great challenge. In this study, a novel poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-sodium acrylate)/alginate/hectorite clay Laponite XLS (PNIPAM-SA/ALG/XLS) double cross-linked hydrogel with excellent mechanical property, self-recovery ability, temperature/pH-responsive ability, and strain/temperature-sensitive conductivity was fabricated. The PNSAX hydrogel possessed a moderate tensile strength of 290 kPa at a large elongation rate of 1120% and an excellent compression strength of 2.72 MPa at 90%. The hydrogel also possessed excellent mechanical repeatability and self-recovery ability. Thus, the hydrogel could withstand repetitive deformations for long time periods. Additionally, the hydrogel could change its transparency and volume once at a temperature of 44 °C and change its volume at different pHs. Thus, the visual temperature/pH-responsive ability allowed the hydrogel to qualitatively harvest environmental information. Moreover, the hydrogel possessed an excellent conductivity of 0.43 S/m, and the hydrogel could transform large/subtle deformation and temperature information into electrical signal change. Thus, the ultrafast strain/temperature-sensitive conductivity allowed the hydrogel to quantitatively detect large/small-scale human motions as well as environmental temperature. A cytotoxicity test confirmed the good cytocompatibility. Taken together, the hydrogel was suitable for human motion detecting and environmental information harvesting for long time periods. Therefore, the hydrogel has a great application potential as a multifunctional ionic skin and smart sensor.
High performance dual strain-temperature sensor based on alginate nanofibril/graphene oxide/polyacrylamide nanocomposite hydrogel

Abstract:The advanced wearable sensors are required to integrate the properties with prominent mechanical properties, superior sensitivity, and multiple stimuli sensing. Herein, a high performance dual strain-temperature sensor was designed based on alginate nanofibril/graphene oxide/polyacrylamide nanocomposite hydrogel. Alginate nanofibril network induced by salting-out provided the high energy dissipation and high ionic conductivity for the hydrogel, and graphene oxide endow the hydrogel with high thermal sensitivity. Owing to the multiple synergic effects, the hydrogel exhibited high-performance mechanical properties with superior stretchability of 3370% and high toughness of 8.87 MJ/m3. The hydrogel presented a superior temperature sensitivity of 2.0%/°C, but also was also applied as a high-performance strain sensor with high gauge factor (GF=4.2), wide workable range (0.02–2000%), fast response time (∼2.5 s) and long-time stability. Based on the good mechanical properties and high stimuli response to strain and temperature, the hydrogel sensor could be a potential candidate material for human-machine interaction, artificial prosthetics, and electronic interconnects.

Abstract:Hydrogels play an important role in the design and fabrication of wearable sensors with outstanding flexibility, high sensitivity and versatility. Since hydrogels lose and absorb water during changes in humidity and temperature, it is critical and challenging to obtain hydrogels that function properly under different environmental conditions. Herein, a dual network hydrogel based on tannic acid (TA) reinforced polyacrylamide (PAM) and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) was constructed, while the introduction of the green solvents Solketal and LiCl endowed the hydrogel with greater possibilities for further modification to improve the water content and consistency of the mechanical properties over 30-90 % RH. This composite hydrogel (PTSL) has long-term stability, excellent mechanical strength, and freezing resistance. As strain sensors, they are linear over the entire strain range (R2 = 0.994) and have a high sensitivity (GF = 2.52 over 0-680 % strain range). Furthermore, the hydrogel's exceptional electrical conductivity and freezing resistance are a result of the synergistic effect of Solketal and LiCl, which intensifies the contact between the water molecules and the colloidal phase. This research could address the suitability of hydrogels over a wide range of humidity and temperature, suggesting great applications for smart flexible wearable electronics in harsh environmental conditions.

Abstract:Flexible sensors based on conductive hydrogels have shown surprising potential in the field of electronic skin and human–computer interaction. However, pure water in the hydrogel will inevitably freeze at low temperature or evaporate quickly in dry environment, resulting in the failure of hydrogel as a flexible sensor. Here, inorganic ions (Li+ and Cl−) and glycerol were introduced into the polyacrylamide/sodium carboxymethylcellulose (PAM/CMCNa) composite hydrogel networks through the strategy of solvent replacement. The optimized hydrogel had a quite large elongation at break of 2000%, and a breaking strength of more than 0.14 MPa. The synergistic effect of inorganic ions and glycerol enabled the hydrogel to maintain a good flexibility in a wide temperature range of −20–45°C, which could meet the work needs of the hydrogel in high temperature or extremely cold environments. The hydrogel showed a very wide working range of 1000%, a fast response time of 150 ms, and a high stability and repeatability of 500 cycles during strain sensing detection. Besides, the hydrogel could capture the large and subtle body movements accurately and stably. Therefore, this hydrogel may be applied as in wearable sensing devices used in extreme environments.

Abstract:Hydrogel sensors are peculiarly attractive in flexible wearable electronics due to the stretchability and strain-responsive ability. However, flexible sensors (e.g. electronic skin) in practice require to perceive both strain and pressure concurrently and repeatedly, which put forward an imperative demand for multi-model and durable hydrogel sensors. Additionally, freezing intolerance is also an urgent problem to be addressed for low-temperature applications of hydrogel sensors. Herein, we constructed a wearable multi-model hydrogel sensor featuring with sensitive and large-range strain and pressure detection capacity, together with long-term stability and wide operating temperature range, based on a resilient, anti-fatigue and freezing-tolerant chitosan-poly (hydroxyethyl acrylamide) double-network (CS-PHEAA DN) hydrogel, which was fabricated via post-cross-linking CS-PHEAA composite hydrogel into Na(3)Cit solution. The ions simultaneously furnished the hydrogel with superior mechanics (stretchability, supercompressibility, excellent resilience and remarkable fatigue resistance), prominent ionic conductivity and low temperature tolerance. Impressively, the assembled hydrogel sensor exhibited preeminent sensitivity and cycling stability on detecting multi-type and large-range deformation (elongation, compression and bend), pressure and various human motions even at low temperatures. Remarkably, the fabricated hydrogel/aluminum hybrid combination serving as a flexible sensor maintained mechanical advantages, sensitive sensing capacity and good durability within a wide temperature range. This work provides a feasible method to construct anti-freezing, durable and multi-mode hydrogel sensors with high sensitivity and large-range detection capacity and paves a way for versatile applications in electronic skin, human-motion detection and intelligence device.
Superior low-temperature tolerant, self-adhesive and antibacterial hydrogels for wearable sensors and communicators

Abstract:Hydrogel-based sensors have drawn wide attention in the fields of medical monitoring, electronic skin, human-machine interfaces, and so forth. So far, although the research of hydrogel-based sensors has made great progress, there are still some problems hindering their further developments, such as poor mechanical flexibility, inadequate anti-freezing capability, and weak self-adhesive and antibacterial properties. Herein, a multipurpose hydrogel (GG/PAAm/PA/LiCl) is facile prepared by the thermally-initiated radical polymerization method. The natural guar gum (GG) and chemically cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAAm) chains based dual-network structures endow the hydrogel with excellent stretchability (2102%) and tensile strength (117 kPa). Meanwhile, the hydrogel exhibits extraordinary low-temperature tolerance due to the synergistic effects of phytic acid (PA) and lithium chloride (LiCl), which can basically maintain its original mechanical properties even after being stored at -50 °C for 15 days. Moreover, the introduction of natural biomolecule PA has also contributed to the superior self-adhesive property and prominent antibacterial activity. Furthermore, as a strain sensor with wide sensing range (5-500%) and remarkable signal stability (800 cycles at 200% strain), which displays attractive application prospects in rehabilitation training monitoring and information transmission. Owing to the outstanding anti-freezing capability, the hydrogel-based sensor is also capable of precisely sensing the bending movements of a prosthetic finger in an extreme weather condition of -50 °C. This work provides a new horizon to develop extraordinary freezing-tolerant hydrogels with multiple properties for future wearable electronics and artificial intelligence.

Abstract:Hydrogels with prominent flexibility, versatility, and high sensitivity play an important role in the design and fabrication of wearable sensors. In particular, these flexible conductive hydrogels exhibit elastic modulus that is highly compatible with human skin, demonstrating the great potential for flexible sensing. However, the preparation of high-performance hydrogel-based sensors that can restrain extreme cold conditions is still challenging. Herein, a novel anti-freezing composite hydrogel with superior conductivity based on polyacrylamide (PAM), LiCl, and PEDOT:PSS coated cellulose nanofibrils (PAM/PEDOT:PSS/CNF) is constructed. The addition of CNF increased the hydrogen bonding sites of the molecular chains in the micro, thus improving the mechanical strength and the conductivity of the hydrogel in the macro. The hydrogels achieve a high tensile strength of 0.19 MPa, compressive strength of 0.92 MPa, and dissipation energy of 41.9 kJ/m 3 . Otherwise, LiCl increases the interactions between the colloidal phase and water molecules, endowing the hydrogels with excellent freezing tolerance. Specifically, the optimized hydrogel of 45 % LiCl exhibited stable mechanical properties at −40 °C. Finally, the composite hydrogel was used to assemble flexible sensors with high sensitivity of 10.3 MPa −1 , which can detect a wide range of human movements and physiological activities.

Abstract:Hydrogel-based wearable sensors have gained great interest on account of their huge application in human-machine interfaces, electronic skin, and healthcare monitoring. However, there are still challenges in designing hydrogel-based sensors with high stability in a wide temperature range, superior adhesion, and excellent sensitivity. Herein, sensors based on oxidized sodium alginate (OSA)/polyacrylamide (PAm)/polydopamine-Ti3C2TX (PMXene) /glycerol/water (Gly/H2O) organohydrogels were designed. The organohydrogels exhibited excellent mechanical properties (elongation at break of 1037%, tensile strength of 0.17 MPa), predominant self-healing ability (self-healing efficiency of 91%), as well as high sensing stability in a wide temperature range (from -20 to 60°C). The introduction of PDA (polydopamine) and viscous glycerin (Gly) provide organohydrogels with superior adhesion. Organohydrogels sensors demonstrated high sensitivity (Gauge Factor, GF = 2.2) due to the combination of ionic and electron conduction. Sensors could stably detect human movement under different strain levels at high and low temperatures, providing a new solution for wearable sensors in extreme conditions.

Abstract:With the growing demand for wearable electronics, designing biocompatible hydrogels that combine self-repairability, wide operating temperature and precise sensing ability offers a promising scheme. Herein, by interpenetrating naturally derived carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel matrix, a novel hydrogel is successfully developed via simple coordination with calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ). The chelation of CMC and Ca 2+ is applied as a second crosslinking mechanism to stabilize the hydrogel at relatively high temperature (95 °C). In particular, it has unique heat-induced healing behavior and unexpected tunable stiffness & transparency. Like the sea cucumber, the gel can transform between a stiffened state and a relaxed state (nearly 23 times modulated stiffness from 453 to 20 kPa) which originates from the reconstruction of the crystallites. The adjustable transparency enables the hydrogel to become an excellent information hiding material. Due to the presence of Ca 2+ , the hydrogels show favorable conductivity, anti-freezing and long-term stability. Based on the advantages, a self-powered sensor, where chemical energy is converted to electrical energy, is assembled for human motion detection. The low-cost, environmentally friendly strategy, at the same time, complies to the "green" chemistry concept with the full employment of the biopolymers. Therefore, the proposed hydrogel is deemed to find potential use in wearable sensors.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogels are promising candidates for fabricating wearable sensors for human motion detection and disease diagnosis, and electronic skin. However, most of the existing ionic conductive hydrogel-based sensors primarily respond to a single-strain stimulus. Only a few ionic conductive hydrogels can respond to multiple physiological signals. Although some studies have explored multi-stimulus sensors, such as those detecting strain and temperature, the ability to identify the type of stimulus remains a challenge, which limits their applications. Herein, a multi-responsive nanostructured ionic conductive hydrogel was successfully developed by crosslinking the thermally sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-ionic liquid) conductive nanogel (PNI NG) with a poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate-co-ionic liquid) (PSI) network. The resultant hydrogel (PNI NG@PSI) was endowed with good mechanical stretchability (300%), resilience and fatigue resistance, and excellent conductivity (2.4 S m-1). Furthermore, the hydrogel exhibited a sensitive and stable electrical signal response and has a potential application in human motion detection. Moreover, the introduction of a nanostructured thermally responsive PNIPAAm network also endowed it with a sensitive and unique thermal-sensing ability to timely and accurately record temperature changes in the range of 30-45 °C, holding promise for application as a wearable temperature sensor to detect fever or inflammation in the human body. In particular, as a dual strain-temperature sensor, the hydrogel demonstrated an excellent capability of distinguishing the type of stimulus from superposed strain-temperature stimuli via electrical signals. Therefore, the implementation of the proposed hydrogel in wearable multi-signal sensors provides a new strategy for different applications, such as health monitoring and human-machine interactions.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels are ideal materials for preparing wearable strain sensing devices due to their flexibility and stretchability. However, most hydrogels exhibited poor freezing resistance and weak water-holding ability, thus hindering the working range of hydrogel-based sensors in extreme environments. Here, a conductive hydrogel featuring conspicuous anti-freezing and water retention abilities was prepared by integrating amylose (AMY) into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/glycerol/NaCl hydrogel. AMY possessed amounts of hydroxyl groups, which could interact with PVA and glycerin via hydrogen bonds, enhancing the toughness of the hydrogel. Meanwhile, based on the strong hydrogen bonding between glycerol and water molecules, the hydrogel displayed water-retaining property after 7 days of storage in an open environment. The synergistic action of NaCl and glycerol prevented the crystallization of the water at low temperatures, endowing the hydrogel with outstanding conductivity and stretchability at -20 °C. Furthermore, the hydrogel-based wearable strain sensor exhibited excellent sensitivity (GF=2.55), fast response/recovery time, good durability and biocompatibility, which accurately detected joint movements and physiological signals at room temperature or under extreme conditions. Therefore, the conductive hydrogels would possess significant application prospects in health detection, disease diagnosis, and artificial intelligence.

Abstract:Abstract The problem of recursive state estimation for a class of distributed parameter systems with an integral quadratic constraint in Hilbert spaces is addressed. Based on solving the linear tracking problem for time-varying systems in Hilbert spaces, necessary and sufficient conditions for robust state estimation problem involving construction of the set of all possible states at the finite interval time with given output measurements and integral quadratic constraints are derived.
A Multifunctional, Self-Healing, Self-Adhesive, and Conductive Sodium Alginate/Poly(vinyl alcohol) Composite Hydrogel as a Flexible Strain Sensor.

Abstract:Hydrogel-based wearable devices have attracted tremendous interest due to their potential applications in electronic skins, soft robotics, and sensors. However, it is still a challenge for hydrogel-based wearable devices to be integrated with high conductivity, a self-healing ability, remoldability, self-adhesiveness, good mechanical strength and high stretchability, good biocompatibility, and stimulus-responsiveness. Herein, multifunctional conductive composite hydrogels were fabricated by a simple one-pot method based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), sodium alginate (SA), and tannic acid (TA) using borax as a cross-linker. The composite hydrogel network was built by borate ester bonds and hydrogen bonds. The obtained hydrogel exhibited pH- and sugar-responsiveness, high stretchability (780% strain), and fast self-healing performance with healing efficiency (HE) as high as 93.56% without any external stimulus. Additionally, the hydrogel displayed considerable conductive behavior and stable changes of resistance with high sensitivity (gauge factor (GF) = 15.98 at a strain of 780%). The hydrogel was further applied as a strain sensor for monitoring large and tiny human motions with durable stability. Significantly, the healed hydrogel also showed good sensing behavior. This work broadens the avenue for the design and preparation of biocompatible polymer-based hydrogels to promote the application of hydrogel sensors with comfortable wearing feel and high sensitivity.

Abstract:Due to their promising applications in health monitoring, wearable flexible sensors based on hydrogel have gained considerable attention as modern medicine advances. However, it is still challenging for hydrogel-based wearable flexible sensors to be integrated with high stretchability, multifunctionality, and biocompatibility. Herein, we designed novel flexible multifunctional sensors based on ionic conductive double-network (DN) hydrogels composed of poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (P(AM-co-AAc)), sodium alginate (SA), and calcium chloride (CaCl2) by simple two-step method of copolymerization and soaking. Abundant carboxyl groups on SA and P(AM-co-AAc) chains and their capacity to bind with Ca2+ were utilized to design a double network, providing the hydrogels with high stretchability and toughness. Ca2+ endowed the hydrogels with enhanced conductivity and sensitivity, while P(AM-co-AAc) enabled the hydrogels to respond to multi-stimuli. The SA/P(AM-co-AAc)/Ca2+ hydrogels presented outstanding mechanical properties (elongation at break of 2626%, tensile strength of 372 kPa), great sensitivity (gauge factor up to 7.1), and excellent durability (1000 stretching-releasing cycles). It could detect human movements, touch, physiology (temperature and sweat), pH changes, and organic solvents. Besides, the hydrogel sensors displayed great biocompatibility. Therefore, this work extends the design and preparation of highly stretchable and multifunctional hydrogels to facilitate the applications of skin-friendly wearable sensors.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The integration of dual strain-temperature sensing properties into a sensor remains a huge challenge. Sensors prepared with the strain/temperature-sensitive electrically conductive materials achieve the performances, however, the poor stretchability and opacity limit the application. Herein, an ionic-conductive composite hydrogel was prepared via radical polymerization by adding LiCl and glycerol. The hydrogel with superior flexibility and transparency displayed excellent strain-sensitivity of 17.3 in a wide strain range of 1973%. Furthermore, due to the strong ionic hydration and the formation of the strong hydrogen bond interaction, the antifreezing hydrogel showed excellent temperature-sensing performances in a range of -30∼80 °C, which exhibited a superior thermal-sensitivity of 5.51 %/°C and a high resolution of 0.2 °C in the range of 36.5∼40 °C. The excellent dual strain-temperature sensing performances make hydrogels promising candidates for flexible sensors with multiple functions and expand the application in human-machine interface and soft robot.
