Abstract:Exploring new-type 2D magnetic materials with high magnetic transition temperature and robust air stability has attracted wide attention for developing innovative spintronic devices. Recently, intercalation of native metal atoms into the van der Waals gaps of 2D layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has been developed to form 2D non-layered magnetic TMDs, while only succeeded in limited systems (e.g., Cr2 S3 , Cr5 Te8 ). Herein, composition-controllable syntheses of 2D non-layered iron selenide nanosheets (25% Fe-intercalated triclinic Fe5 Se8 and 50% Fe-intercalated monoclinic Fe3 Se4 ) are firstly reported, via a robust chemical vapor deposition strategy. Specifically, the 2D Fe5 Se8 exhibits intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetic property, which is explained by the change of electron spin states from layered 1T'-FeSe2 to non-layered Fe-intercalated Fe5 Se8 based on density functional theory calculations. In contrast, the ultrathin Fe3 Se4 presents novel metallic features comparable with that of metallic TMDs. This work hereby sheds light on the composition-controllable synthesis and fundamental property exploration of 2D self-intercalation induced novel TMDs compounds, by propelling their application explorations in nanoelectronics and spintronics-related fields.

Abstract:Driven by applications in information technology, the search for new materials with stable, long-range magnetic ordering continues. Metalorganic magnets, involving the coordination of metal atoms with specific organic ligands, are a focus of intense research. These magnets offer customizable properties through synthetic adjustments to ligands or coordination chemistry. Here the synthesis, structural characterization, and magnetic properties of the 2D cyanocarbon magnet NiTCNE is reported. 2D-crystalline domains of this single-layered metalorganic network reach sizes exceeding 30 nanometers through co-deposition of the ligand TCNE (tetracyanoethylene) and Ni atoms on an Au(111) surface under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Non-contact atomic force microscopy visualizes the structure with atomic resolution. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism establishes the 2D NiTCNE as a ferromagnet, with a very high magnetic remanence, a coercive field of around 1 tesla and a Curie temperature between 10 and 20 kelvin. As metalorganic chemistry opens a large variety of routes of synthesis, we anticipate that this materials research paves the way to new magnetic nanomaterials for spintronics applications.

Abstract:A novel approach has been developed to synthesize magnetic nanoparticle and carbon nanotube (CNT) core-shell nanostructures, such as CoO/CNTs and Mn3O4/CNTs, by the nonaqueous solvothermal treatment of metal carbonyl on CNT templates using hexane as the solvent. The morphological and structural characterizations indicate that numerous cubic CoO or tetragonal Mn3O4 nanoparticles are deposited on the surfaces of the CNTs to form CNT-based core-shell nanostructures. It is revealed that the hydrophobic interaction between nanoparticles and CNTs in hexane plays the critical role for the formation of CNT-based core-shell nanostructures. A physical property measurement system (PPMS-9, Quantum Design) analysis indicates that the CoO/CNT core-shell nanostructures show weak ferromagnetic performance at 300 K due to the ferromagnetic Co clusters and the uncompensated surface spin states, while the Mn3O4/CNT core-shell nanostructures display ferromagnetic behavior at low temperature (34.5 K), which transforms into paramagnetic behavior with increasing temperature.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials have attracted significant attention for promising applications in energy-saving logic and robust memory devices. However, most 2D magnets discovered so far typically feature drawbacks for practical applications due to low critical temperatures. Herein, we synthesize ultrathin room-temperature (RT) magnetic Fe7Se8 nanoflakes via the space-confined chemical vapor deposition method. It is found that the appropriate supply and control of Se concentration in the reaction chamber is crucial for synthesizing high-quality nonstoichiometric Fe7Se8 nanoflakes. Cryogenic electrical and magnetic characterizations reveal the emergence of spin reorientation at ∼130 K and the survival of long-range magnetic ordering up to room temperature. The RT magnetic domain structures with different thicknesses are also uncovered by magnetic force microscopy. Moreover, theoretical calculations confirm the spin configuration and metallic band structure. The outstanding characteristics exhibited by Fe7Se8 nanoflakes, including RT magnetism, spin reorientation property, and good electrical conductivity, make them a potential candidate for RT spintronics.
Cyanide-bridged Single Molecule Magnet Based on a Manganese(iii) Complex with TTF-fused Schiff Base Ligand

Abstract:Reaction of [Mn(TTF-salphen)][OAc] (TTF-salphen 2− =2,2′-((2-(4,5-bis(methylthio)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-1,3-benzodithiole-5,6-diyl)bis(nitrilomethylidyne)bis(phenolate)dianion) and the cyanometalate building blocks [ n -Bu 4 N][(Tp)Fe(CN) 3 ] (Tp − =Tris(pyrazolyl)hydroborate) or [ n -Bu 4 N][Ru(salen)(CN) 2 ] (salen 2− = N , N ′-ethylenebis(salicylideneimine)dianion) resulted in the formation of two redox-active complexes, the dinuclear heterometallic complex [(Tp)Fe(CN) 3 Mn(TTF-salphen)·CH 3 OH] ( 1 ) and the one dimensional complex [Ru(salen)(CN) 2 Mn(TTF-salphen)] n ( 2 ). Both complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography and solid state electrochemistry, in addition to static and dynamic magnetic measurements. Antiferromagnetic couplings are found to be operative between metal ion centers bridged by cyanide in both complexes. Complex 1 exhibited field-induced SMM behavior with an energy barrier of 13.8 K. The introduction of the redox-active TTF unit into cyanide-bridged complexes with interesting magnetic properties renders them promising candidates for the construction of new hybrid inorganic-organic materials.
A Cyanide-Bridged FeCo5 Square-Pyramidal Single-Ion Magnet

Abstract:The reaction of mononuclear [Co-II(Me(6)tren)Cl](+) precursors and diamagnetic [Fe-II(CN)(6)](4-) building blocks affords a cyanide-bridged hexanuclear FeCo5 complex featuring square-pyramidal architecture. The dc magnetic susceptibility data and theoretical calculations reveal that the complex exhibits a well-isolated S = 15/2 ground state composed of c-coupled S = 3/2 Co2+ ions. The ac magnetic susceptibility data further reveal that the complex exhibits slow magnetic relaxation under an applied field due to the presence of considerable easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of the five Co2+ ions. As far as is known, complex FeCo5 is the first square-pyramidal hexanuclear single-ion magnet.

Abstract:Two novel isostructural cyanide‐bridged hexadecanuclear complexes with the general formula {[Fe(CN)6]6[M{en(Bn)py}]10}2+ [M = Fe (12+), Ni (22+)] have been synthesized. The structural analyses disclose the presence of multivalent Fe centres with different spin states in complex 12+ whereas all the Fe centres share a conserved oxidation state in complex 22+. The DC magnetic study revealed antiferromagnetic interactions between the adjacent metal centres and ferrimagnetic behaviour in 12+. On the other hand, ferromagnetic interactions were observed in complex 22+ due to nearly orthogonal orientation of the interacting orbitals and poor spatial overlap as observed in BS‐DFT calculations.

Abstract:3d transition metal chalcogenides have attracted much attention due to their unique magnetic properties. Although various Cr, V, and Fe-based chalcogenides have been fabricated recently, the limited Curie temperature (T C) still hinders their practical application. Based on the structural and magnetic advantages of MFe2O4 and Fe3Se4, we developed a one-pot solution synthesis method for the fabrication of NiFe2Se4 nanostructures with structural continuity, to facilitate the investigation of their magnetic properties. Notably, the morphology of NiFe2Se4 can be controlled from nano-rods to nano-platelets by controlling the growth direction. The coercivity (H C) of NiFe2Se4 with nano-cactus structure exhibits a maximum of 12.77 kOe at 5 K. The coercivity of ferrimagnetic NiFe2Se4 nano-platelets can be further adjusted to 1.52 kOe at room temperature. These results show that the magnetic properties of NiFe2Se4 can be significantly modified by controlling their morphologies. We also extend the method to the synthesis of CoFe2Se4 nano-cactus with an ultrahigh coercivity of 17.85 kOe at 5 K. Obviously, the synthesis strategy and their excellent magnetic properties of MFe2Se4 have sparked interest in ternary transition metal selenides as potential hard magnetic materials.

Abstract:Magnetic anisotropic nanocomposites have attracted tremendous interests, due to their unexpected properties originating from the interactions of the interfaces except for the intrinsic features. In this work, we develop a facile solution chemistry synthesis method to prepare the one-dimensional (1D) Co-Fe3O4 heterostructures with hard magnetic property. Interestingly, the Fe precursor firstly decompose and nucleate individually, and then grow on the surface of the hexagonal closed-packed (hcp) Co nanorods (NRs) upon prolonging heating time at higher temperature, which is different from the general seed-mediated growth model. The distribution density of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of the Co NRs can be varied with the addition of Fe source, modulating the values of coercivity and saturation magnetization for the Co-Fe3O4 heterostructures. The as-synthesizedCo-Fe3O4 heterostructures maintain the hard magnetic properties with a coercivity value more than 2.5 kOe as well as a saturation magnetization value up to 128.3 emu g−1, indicating the preservation of the anisotropy of the hcp Co NRs.
Half-metallic Ferromagnetism in Synthetic Co9Se8 Nanosheets with Atomic Thickness.

Abstract:Controlling the synthesis of atomic-thick nanosheets of nonlayered materials is extremely challenging because of the lack of an intrinsic driving force for anisotropic growth of two-dimensional (2D) structures. In that case, control of the anisotropy such as oriented attachment of small building blocks during the reaction process will be an effective way to achieve 2D nanosheets. Those atomic-thick nanosheets possess novel electronic structures and physical properties compared with the corresponding bulk samples. Here we report Co(9)Se(8) single-crystalline nanosheets with atomic thickness and unique lamellar stacking formed by 2D oriented attachment. The atomic-thick Co(9)Se(8) nanosheets were found to exhibit intrinsic half-metallic ferromagnetism, as supported by both our experimental measurements and theoretical calculations. This work will not only open a new door in the search for new half-metallic ferromagnetic systems but also pave a practical way to design ultrathin, transparent, and flexible paperlike spintronic devices.
Free-standing 2D Non-Van Der Waals Antiferromagnetic Hexagonal FeSe Semiconductor: Halide-Assisted Chemical Synthesis and Fe2+ Related Magnetic Transitions.

Abstract:The scarcity of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic nanostructures has hindered their applications in spintronics, which is attributed to that most magnetic materials exhibit non-van der Waals (nvdWs) structures and it is hard to reduce their thickness to 2D nanostructures. Thus it is necessary to develop a promising strategy for free-standing 2D magnetic nvdWs nanostructures. We have achieved free-standing 2D nvdWs hexagonal FeSe with a thickness of 2.9 nm by the reaction between the oleylamine-Se complex and Fe2+ with the assistance of Cl-, where the synergetic effects of Cl- and -NH2 lead to anisotropic growth. Inspiringly, the 2D hexagonal FeSe exhibits intrinsic antiferromagnetic order rooted in Fe2+ and semiconducting nature. In addition, the temperature variation would result in the chemical environment changes of Fe2+, responsible for the temperature-dependent magnetic transitions. This work promotes the potential applications of 2D hexagonal FeSe and the preparation of other 2D nvdWs materials.

Abstract:By the coordination assembly of a redox photoactive functional motif and a cyanide-bridged moiety, a cyanide-bridged MnII−FeIII compound with large photoinduced magnetic change at room-temperature due to photoinduced electron transfer was obtanied. This compound also shows unprecedented radical-quenched spin glass in molecule based magnets.

Abstract:The engineering of switchable moleculeswith dramatic magnetic change is currently among themost active areas in chemical research. Here, two cyanide-bridged mixed-valence {(Fe4Fe4II)-Fe-III} cubes were prepared, both of which, interestingly, exhibited reversible thermally inducedmetal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) behavior between {(Fe4Fe4II,HS)-Fe-III,LS} and {Fe(II,LS)4Fe(4)(III,HS)} configurations with the transition temperature (T1/2) of 274 and 230 K, respectively. These cubes provided a rare example of discrete homometallic complexes exhibiting the reversible MMCT rather than spin cross-over behavior. In stark contrast to the heterometallic Fe/Co system, in which the charge transfer (CT) and spin transition (ST) processes occur simultaneously, the detailed structural and Mossbauer spectroscopy analyses confirmed the CT property without involving ST. In addition, both of these cubes showed excellent redox flexibility in solution with seven quasi accessible electronic states. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have so far been highlighted for their potential roles in catalysis, gas storage and separation. However, the realization of high electrical conductivity (>10−3 S cm−1) and magnetic ordering in MOFs will afford them new functions for spintronics, which remains relatively unexplored. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of a two-dimensional MOF by solvothermal methods using perthiolated coronene as a ligand and planar iron-bis(dithiolene) as linkages enabling a full π-d conjugation. This 2D MOF exhibits a high electrical conductivity of ~10 S cm−1 at 300 K, which decreases upon cooling, suggesting a typical semiconductor nature. Magnetization and 57Fe Mössbauer experiments reveal the evolution of ferromagnetism within nanoscale magnetic clusters below 20 K, thus evidencing exchange interactions between the intermediate spin S = 3/2 iron(III) centers via the delocalized π electrons. Our results illustrate that conjugated 2D MOFs have potential as ferromagnetic semiconductors for application in spintronics.

Controllable magnetic anisotropy and ferroelasticity in superconducting FeSe monolayer with surface fluorine adsorption

Abstract:Controllable magnetization in atomically thin two-dimensional magnets is highly desirable for developing spintronics. For FeSe monolayer, its magnetic ground state is not yet fully understood, and the potential in constructing high-speed and advanced devices remains unknown. Using density functional theory calculations, we confirm the spin ordering of monolayer FeSe to be dimer texture. With Fluorine (F) adsorption (F/FeSe), the system exhibits a coverage dependent magnetic anisotropy and multiferroicity which can be attributable to the Jahn-Teller effect, being the benefit to potential spintronic applications. Intriguingly, an inherent coupling between magnetism and ferroelasticity in the most energetically favorable F/FeSe system is proposed. Our study thus not only provides a promising way to control the spintronic properties and construct multiferroics, but also renders F/FeSe an ideal platform for magnetism studies and practical high-performance multifunctional devices.

Abstract:THE rational design of molecular compounds that exhibit spontaneous magnetic ordering might enable one to tailor magnetic properties for specific applications in magnetic memory devices1–4. In such materials synthesized previously5–17, however, the underlying weak magnetic interactions are incapable of maintaining ordering at ambient temperatures. One remarkable exception is a compound derived from vanadium and tetracyanoethylene18, but the material is amorphous and fragile, and consequently the molecular interactions responsible for its striking properties are not understood. Here we demonstrate another route to the synthesis of a room-temperature organometallic magnet, in which we combine a hexa-cyanometalate [M(CN)6]q− with a Lewis acid Lp+ If L and M are transition-metal ions, then the orbital interactions in the resulting compound can be described by well understood principles21–24, and it is therefore possible to choose the metals to tune the compound's magnetic properties–in particular, the magnetic ordering (Curie) temperature Tc (refs 21–26). We have synthesized a room-temperature magnetic material (TC = 315 K) that belongs to the Prussian blue family of compounds27 (where M is chromium and L is vanadium), demonstrating that transition-metal hexacyano complexes are promising components for the construction of molecule-based high-Tc magnets.

Abstract:Low-dose electron diffraction has been instrumental in determining the crystal structures of two compounds with metal-radical coordination frameworks {[Mn II 2 (NITIm) 3 ]CF 3 SO 3 .CH 3 OH} n (1) and {[Mn II 2 (NITImMe 2 ) 3 ]ClO 4 } n ( 2 ). The compounds crystallize as nanocrystals upon addition of triflate ( 1 ) and perchlorate ( 2 ) anions and coordination of manganese(II) with bis-chelate nitronyl nitroxide radicals NITImH ( 1 ) and NITImHMe2 ( 2 ) which are respectively 2-(2-imidazolyl)- and 2-(4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-yl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-3-oxide-1-oxyl. The two compounds have layered crystal structures in which cationic 2D metal-radical coordination polymers {[Mn II 2 (NITIm) 3 ] + } n ( 1 ) and {[Mn II 2 (NITImMe 2 ) 3 ] + } n ( 2 ) are separated by layers of triflate ( 1 ) or perchlorate ( 2 ) anions. Magnetic measurements evidence a ferrimagnetic behavior within the 2D metal-radical sheets due to alternating antiferromagnetically coupled spins (SMn 2+ = 5/2 and Sradical = 1/2). Both compounds exhibit a long-range 3D ordering of weak-ferromagnetic type due to spin canting with Curie temperatures Tc = 45 K ( 1 ) and 40 K ( 2 ). This is associated with a field-induced metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic coupling of 2D metal-radical sheets. Studies of the crystal structures allows to rationalize how the molecular structure of nitronyl nitroxide radicals and of the counter-anions along with crystal packing affect the magnetic behavior related to interlayer distance and framework flexibility. These results are striking evidence that electron crystallography is a unique tool to solve structures of metal-organic compounds crystallizing as nanocrystals even with components too sensitive to typical electron doses. Overcoming the crystal size barrier, it allows the validation of chemical synthesis and the establishment of magneto-structural relationships fostering new advances in the design of molecule-based magnets.
