Abstract:High-temperature tensile ductility in fine-grained pure Al2O3 is limited owing to rapid grain growth and resultant severe cavitations during deformation. In this paper nano-sized Al2O3-20mol%ZrO2 (3Y) powders were synthesized by heating of ethanol-aqueous salt solutions. Subsequently, zirconia-dispersed alumina nanocomposite was obtained by hot-pressing sintering in vacuum. Constrained extrusion was adopted to form a turbine-compressor blade model. The results demonstrate that the desired microstructure is achieved through the addition of 20mol% of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (YTZ), which acts as a second-phase pinning agent. The microstructure of as-sintered material indicates to be a typical intra/inter granular nanocomposite. At temperature range of 1650 degreesC to 1700 degreesC the material shows good deformability, hence, ceramic blade models can be achieved successfully. At this higher temperature the maximum extrusion pressure is lower than 25MPa, and the punch speed is about 0.25mm(.)min(-1). The flowing trace in extruded ceramic composites, which is often occurred in deformed metals, is firstly observed. The factors behind these abnormal characteristics of the ceramic composite are (1) the intra/inter granular nanocomposite of the material (2) the nucleation and growth of internal cavities are eliminated in extrusion (3) the enhanced deformation temperature.
