Abstract:There exits a weak zone in the friction stir welded (FSW) joint of Al-Li alloy, which location depends on the welding parameter and has an essential effect on the joint strength. Experimental results show that when rotating speed is 800rpm and welding speed is smaller than 160mm/min, the HAZ adjacent to the HAZ/TMAZ interface is the weak zone of the FSW joint. Welding parameters have a significant effect on the microstructures in the weak zone: the sizes of subgrains and precipitates decline, and the densities of the dislocation and the dominating strengthening precipitate increase with the increase in welding speed, resulting in tensile strength being increased with welding speed. When welding speed is greater than 160mm/min, the defect appears on the advancing-side WNZ/TMAZ interface, leading to joints strength being weakened severely, and the WNZ/TMAZ interface is the weak zone of the FSW joint. Tensile tests shows that the joint strength arrives at the maximum 393MPa at nu = 160mm/min.
