Abstract:Here, the influence of main intermediate acidic productions of different sources on two-phase fermentation system from kitchen wastewater was investigated. The same concentrations of main volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from different sources, self-produced acids (SPAs) contained in the supernatant of methanogenesis reactor (MR) and external acids (EXAs) compounded with chemical reagents, were replenished into hydrogen-producing reactor (HR) to adjust pH and avoid VFAs accumulating in the HR as part of supernatant discharged from HR. Compared with the control samples (CONs) results, the biogas yield of the HR was reduced by 39.5% in EX experiments (EXs), but was increased by 15.2% in SP experiments (SPs). While the biogas yield of the MR were increased by 48.5%, 62.9%, respectively, in SPs and EXs. VFAs generation was similar as the source of acids changed. Higher concentrations of acetate and proprionate acid were produced in SPs than in EXs, while comparatively lower concentrations of these compounds were produced in CONs in both HR and MR. Therefore, supernatant recycling is effective for preventing VFA accumulation in the HR and increasing methane production in the MR and H-2-producing bacteria degraded SPs easier than EXs. However, supernatant recycling without pretreatment resulted in methanogen influx and decreased the H-2 percentage in the headspace by 10% in the HR.
