Abstract:This study aimed to understand the environmental knowledge (EK) of the residents of Hong Kong. A territory-wide survey was administered to investigate the subjective and objective EK of the respondents as well as their means of receiving information about the environment. The results indicated that Hong Kong's residents have a comparatively low level of EK, with a mean environmental knowledge score of 3.35 out of 8. The youngster (15-24 years old), students, and employed individuals reported more extensive EK than the older and unemployed respondents, thus suggesting that the younger generation and employed individuals have increased opportunities to receive EK through various channels. A weak positive correlation was identified between subjective and objective EK, thus implying that the residents of Hong Kong could not accurately evaluate their own level of EK. The results indicate that traditional media plays a significant role in disseminating EK. Digital media, such as websites and digital social networks, were also determined to be influencing factors in disseminating environmental messages to the younger generation.
Culture, Social Class, and Independence-Interdependence: the Case of Chinese Adolescents

Abstract:Social class demarcates sociocultural environments differing in the relative abundance and scarcity of resources, which in turn differentially afford independent and interdependent psychological processes. The relationships between social class and psychological processes are well documented in Western populations but less so elsewhere. Examining such a relationship is particularly important in China, with its unique historical and sociocultural issues surrounding social class. This research examined the relationship between social class and independence–interdependence among Chinese adolescents (N = 1184). Findings were consistent across a diverse array of psychological processes implicated by independence–interdependence: Participants with well‐educated parents experienced more socially disengaging emotions and a higher level of self‐esteem, and were more inclined toward dispositional attribution and focused attention, compared to participants with less well‐educated parents. These findings highlight the cross‐cultural commonality in the relationship between social class and independence–interdependence.
Social Work Development Trends in Hong Kong: Implications for Social Work Education

Abstract:This chapter examines the trends of social work development in Hong Kong and its implications to social work education. The tremendous changes of the political and social arena in Hong Kong had great influences to social work development trends during the past two decades. In facing the lack of long-term welfare planning, increase in public accountability, change of operation mode and governance of non-government organizations, development of social work has undergone various changes. The changes include (1) the rise of managerialism in social welfare settings; (2) the budding of short-term project-based service deliverables under an integrative service model; (3) growing diversity of practice approaches; (4) development of multi-level intervention models; (5) multidisciplinary collaboration; (6) changes of client-practitioner relationships; and (7) growing attention to evidence-based practice. The changes of social work development have insightful impacts on social work education, particularly on the theory-practice relationships, dual foci of social work mission, upholding professionalism of social work, and collaboration between academics and non-government organizations. The current social work development trends of Hong Kong in the past decades may give social workers, educators and scholars some insightful speculations on the future social work development in Hong Kong.

Abstract:Hong Kong is a colonial society facing political change with its reversion to control by the People's Republic of China in 1997. In order to assess changing intergroup perceptions, a questionnaire was constructed around elements central to Taifel's social identity theory. This questionnaire was administered to British and Chinese high school students in Hong Kong before and after the signing of the Sino-British accord. Although no phase effects were found, extensive differences were detected between the two groups along the commonly perceived factors of (a) identification with the ingroup, (b) intergroup differentiation, (c) resistance to change, and (d) satisfaction with the status quo. These differences were discussed in terms of cultural dynamics, especially Chinese avoidance of conflict, and political logic, especially Hong Kong's future role as mediator of modernization for China.

Abstract:This paper tracking the logistic framework of Drive-Response-Influence-State, brings forward an information resources measurement system which covering 9 indicators. Then it applies the statistics tool SPSS12.0 to carry out principal components analysis among 31 provinces and districts in Chinese mainland in the year from 2000 to 2005.The outcome of measurement shows that it is according with districts development actuality on the whole. Finally, it points out that people should take importance on exploitation and utility of information resources in future, so as to promote harmonious development among different regions.

Abstract:Family wellbeing is studied worldwide. However, there is a dearth of studies on the wellbeing of families in Chinese societies such as Hong Kong, nor is there any socially relevant and culturally unique instrument for measuring such wellbeing. This paper reports the validity and reliability of an instrument that was developed to assess the wellbeing of Hong Kong Chinese families. Through a comprehensive literature review, interviews with service users from a diversity of backgrounds, consultation meetings with experts on families and related issues, and a pilot study, the framework of a family wellbeing index was developed. Using data from 1343 participants collected via a cross-sectional telephone survey, we employed exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis to develop the factorial structure of the tool. Six domains, six subdomains, 23 single-question indicators, and 26 questions were constructed. The six domains were family solidarity, family resources, family health, social involvement, social resources, and work-life balance. The internal consistency of the overall index was 0.904. The scale had a significant predictive effect on the subjective appraisal of the current and future status of the wellbeing of a family, which provided initial evidence of convergent validity. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis confirmed that the construct of the tool encompassed different domains. This study is significant because it provides directions for future studies on family wellbeing and insights for social policy formulation and social service development.

Abstract:Since the handover, policymakers in Hong Kong have faced the daunting task of determining the educational roles of two major international languages (Putonghua and English), as well as a vibrant local language (Cantonese), which is the mother tongue of around 90% of the city's predominantly Chinese population. Their response to this unprecedented challenge has been to set the ambitious goal of developing students’ ability to read and write Chinese and English and to speak Cantonese, Putonghua, and English. At the same time, however, they are pursuing policies that in some respects run counter to this commendable if ill-defined aim. This article examines the background to and rationale for the promotion of biliteracy and trilingualism and reviews recent research into the government's major language-in-education initiatives since 1997, namely, the adoption of a compulsory mother-tongue policy at junior secondary level, the recent fine-tuning of this controversial policy, and the use of Putonghua as the medium of instruction in Chinese subjects at primary and secondary levels.

Development and validation of a positive youth development scale in Hong Kong

Abstract:The development of the Chinese Positive Youth Development Scale (CPYDS) is outlined in this paper. The CPYDS assesses 15 aspects of positive youth development, including bonding, resilience, social competence, emotional competence, cognitive competence, moral competence, behavioral competence, self-determination, self-efficacy, spirituality, positive view of the future, positive self-identity, prosocial involvement, prosocial norms, and recognition for positive behavior. Based on a Well Adjustment Group (N=162) and a Poor Adjustment Group (N=264), the present findings showed that the CPYDS and its subscales possess acceptable internal consistency. Except the Self-Efficacy Subscale, the CPYDS total and subscale scores were able to discriminate the two groups. While the CPYDS total and subscale scores were positively related to thriving, wellness assessment and life satisfaction measures, they were negatively related to substance abuse, delinquency, and behavioral intention to engage in problem behavior. The present findings provide support for the reliability and validity of the CPYDS to assess positive youth development in the Chinese culture.

Abstract:Despite the mounting evidence supporting the effectiveness of short-term study abroad programs (such as Service-Learning programs) on university students' development, few studies have been conducted to explore the impact of short-term study in China programs on young people from Hong Kong. This study employed a qualitative design method to examine the impact of three types of short-term study programs in China—summer school, cultural tour, and service-learning—on Hong Kong university students' development and to explore both the facilitators of, and the barriers to, the impact of the programs. A total of 42 students from 17 short-term study in China programs were interviewed individually. Results showed that all three types of short-term study in China programs were perceived by participants as having a positive impact on their intercultural competence as well as their perceptions of, and attitudes toward, the Nation and Chinese people. Participants of service-learning programs also demonstrated enhanced global citizenship. However, these programs did not have any significant impact on their perceived identities as Hong Kong or Chinese citizens. Individual and program factors that facilitated or impeded the student's gains from the programs were identified. These findings provide pioneer evidence for the positive impacts of short-term study in China programs on Hong Kong local university students and for the improvement of the current programs as well as the development of new programs in the future.

Abstract:Attentions had been heavily paid to social indicators building in many countries in the post of the Second World War.As the developments of social indicators,which originated from post-war USA,a "social indicator movement" had arisen.Although it had not lasted for a very long time,with its influence disappeared in the late 1970s,however,the similar efforts had been continuing,which including our Chinese scholar's efforts.The authors believe that the summary and review of the "social indicator movement" and the scholar' comments on it will offer important reference and enlightenment for our ongoing efforts.
Comparing the Use of Spatially Explicit Indicators and Conventional Indicators in the Evaluation of Healthy Cities: A Case Study in Shenzhen, China.

Abstract:Various indicator systems have been developed to monitor and assess healthy cities. However, few of them contain spatially explicit indicators. In this study, we assessed four health determinants in Shenzhen, China, using both indicators commonly included in healthy city indicator systems and spatially explicit indicators. The spatially explicit indicators were developed using detailed building information or social media data. Our results showed that the evaluation results of districts and sub-districts in Shenzhen based on spatially explicit indicators could be positively, negatively, or not associated with the evaluation results based on conventional indicators. The discrepancy may be caused by the different information contained in the two types of indicators. The spatially explicit indicators measure the quantity of the determinants and the spatial accessibility of these determinants, while the conventional indicators only measure the quantity. Our results also showed that social media data have great potential to represent the high-resolution population distribution required to estimate spatially explicit indicators. Based on our findings, we recommend that spatially explicit indicators should be included in healthy city indicator systems to allow for a more comprehensive assessment of healthy cities.
Differential emphases on modernity and confucian values in social categorization: the case of hong kong adolescents in political transition

Abstract:This study investigated if modernity and Confucian values were ingroups positively valued distinctiveness for Hong Kong adolescents with different social identities. Participants (236 Hong Kong adolescents) filled out a questionnaire which tapped social identity and intergroup perception. They also participated in a card-sorting activity in which they decided if any of 20 attributes (e.g., advanced, respecting collective will) could be used to characterize a specific ethnic–social group (e.g., mainland Chinese, Hongkongers, Americans). Multidimensional scaling performed on the card-sorting data resulted in a two-dimensional solution. Emphasis on Dimension 1 (modernity) correlated with positive perception of Hong Kong and Hong Kong people while emphasis on Dimension 2 (Confucian values) correlated with positive perception of China and Chinese. In addition, compared to adolescents who identified themselves as Chinese or Chinese-Hongkongers, those who identified themselves as Hongkongers or Hongkonger-Chinese placed more emphasis on modernity and less on Confucian values. The results were discussed with reference to Taj fels theory of social identity.
Effective health promoting school for better health of children and adolescents: indicators for success

Abstract:Background: Improvement of health literacy, health behavioural change, creating a supportive physical and social environment to be more conducive to health should be the focus of child and adolescent public health. The concept of Health Promoting School initiated by World Health Organization aims to move beyond individual behavioural change and to consider organisational structure change such as improvement of the school's physical and social environment. The aim of this study is identification of the key indicators for successful implementation of Health Promoting School by analysing the findings of the school health profile based on the structured framework of Hong Kong Healthy School Award Scheme and the health status of students investigated by the Hong Kong Student Health Survey. Methods: This is a retrospective correlation study. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was utilised to analyse for significant improvement of school health profile measured at baseline (n = 104) and among those schools implemented the Hong Kong Healthy School Award Scheme (n = 54). Those indicators showing statistical significance were chosen to be part of the core indicators reflecting effective Health Promoting School. Each of those selected core indicators was then correlated with the related student health outcomes measured by the Hong Kong Student Health Survey Questionnaire to further identify the core indicators. Results: A total of 20 core indicators among all the six Key Areas of Health Promoting School (6 indicators under action competencies, 2 under community link, 2 under physical environment, 2 under social environment, 4 under healthy school policies, 1 under services of school health protection) have been identified with the method mentioned above. Conclusions: This study has identified the indicators with most significant impact on a wide range of health related outcomes. Those are key indicators for motivating positive change of the schools and students. They can be considered as school performance indicators to help schools embarking their Health Promoting School journey as another key education objective.

Abstract:This monograph provides an overview of the language situation in Hong Kong from a historical perspective. Hong Kong has evolved in the past 167 years from a small fishing port to an international financial centre which forms part of a financial network hailed by Time Magazine as Ny.Lon.Kong (i.e. New York-London-Hong Kong). Hong Kong has gone through changes of sovereignty twice, once in 1842 as a Chinese territory ceded to Britain after the first Opium War, and a second time in 1997 as a British colony returned to China. It is a micro polity with no natural resources except its deep harbour. Economically, Hong Kong has gradually developed from a fishing port when British settlement began in 1841, to an entrepôt during 1945–1950s, to a manufacturing hub during 1960–1970s, to an international financial centre since the 1980s. The historical, political and economic development has had a great impact on the language situation in Hong Kong. Its language community started with two separate monolingual groups: one consisting of local Chinese speaking Cantonese and other Chinese dialects, and the other composed of British colonists speaking English. Because of language spread and language shift as a result of political, economic and social changes, the monolingual group of Chinese speakers has become trilingual, speaking Cantonese, English and Putonghua, whereas the monolingual group of English speakers has expanded to include native speakers of such other English varieties as American English, Australian English, Canadian English, Indian English and Singaporean English. In addition, there is a large group of minorities composed of bilingual speakers of English and a south Asian language. Although the development of language use is a natural process, it can be influenced by the government's language policy and planning. In 1997 there was a major political change, and Hong Kong, a capitalist city that practised a free economy for 155 years, was handed back to a socialist regime in China and now functions as a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (PRC) under the ‘One Country Two Systems’ policy. Hong Kong's prospects for a changing language situation depend on its political and economic development as well as PRC's policy.

Abstract:It was discovered through a questionnaire and interview survey of 570 students, 37 teachers, and 82 parents in six primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong, China, that: (1) each school has the right to choose teaching materials, and the legacy of former colonial education in related to teaching materials and teachers is serious; 90% of schools are public and government-funded schools that adopt traditional Chinese in teaching materials and Cantonese as a medium of instruction; other 10% of schools are private schools use English teaching materials and English as a medium of instruction; (2) There are few introductions to Chinese culture and the Chinese Mainland in broad language textbooks; students' everyday language is predominantly Cantonese. All schools offer one class hour of Chinese Putonghua every week, and students with fewer Putonghua class hours have a lower level. (3) While 63% and 74% of students and parents agreed to include Chinese culture and socialist fundamental principles in the instructional materials, only 30% of teachers agreed. (4) Nearly half of Hong Kong students and nearly half of their parents aspire to go to the Mainland for study or jobs. (5) Television and electronic media are the primary sources of information for teachers, students, and parents regarding the growth of the motherland's Mainland. Due to the high stress of daily life, few people have visited the Mainland, and 90% of them are looking forward to the opportunity to visit the Mainland for free. Article visualizations:

Social Development with Public Value: An International Comparison

Abstract:Abstract Social development around the world has been stunted by the lack of a comprehensive understanding and definition of public value. Public value theory can provide guidance, and inform a universal standard for social development. However, it is difficult to define and measure public value due to its philosophical complexity. Public values are driven by various economic, political, and social forces, and can be created by many stakeholders including enterprises, governments and non-governmental organisations. Government is central to human society and is primarily responsible for inclusive social development, which requires setting and maintaining public values orderly and synchronously according to the plurality of views held by those in society. Social development failure may occur when some key public values are ignored. This study uses thirty economic, social, and political indicators to measure public value, and the results demonstrate strong correlations among them. Through a principal component analysis and a cluster analysis, these thirty indicators can be reduced to four principal components. The first one, which represents economic value, can explain 65.8% of the total information, identifying that economic value is playing a fundamental role among plural public values. Countries are clustered and their development neighbors are identified in order to compare countries with similar levels of development. Public value theory can help to understand the advantages and disadvantages of different countries, and advance the social and economic progress steadily and authentically.

Abstract:Social sustainability, the social pillar of sustainable development, has had increasing influences in recent years. It pursues the realisation of human well‐being and focuses on satisfying human needs and improving the quality of life. Unfortunately, there is a lack of social sustainability research in the aged care sector. The definition and indicators for social sustainability in aged care projects in the Chinese context are unclear, let alone the status of its realisation. This study aimed to establish a social sustainability indicator framework for aged care projects in China. Two focus group meetings and two online Delphi surveys were conducted to finalise and evaluate the indicators. Three stakeholders, 10 social impacts, and 21 indicators were identified. The realisation status of 19 indicators needs to be improved, nine of which need special attention. The indicator framework established in this study will be an effective tool to enhance the understanding and measure the social sustainability of aged care projects. As the world's most populous country, China's experience can provide insights to other countries. Moreover, the findings have implications for understanding the social sustainability of other public service projects with social impact.

Debating National Identity in Postcolonial Cities: A Comparison of Civic Education Textbooks in Hong Kong and Macau

Abstract:Civic education has long been viewed as a political tool to construct identity in nation-states. This view, however, is complicated by the cases of Hong Kong and Macau. As former colonies and current autonomous regions of China, the two cities went through decolonisation without becoming nation-states. Does this status affect Hong Kong's and Macau's identity discourses? Are civic textbooks tools to construct or deconstruct a Chinese/national identity? What explains the two cities' different identity discourses? Going beyond the civic-ethnic binary, this article argues that identities in 'postcolonial territorial autonomies', such as Hong Kong and Macau, should be analysed through a multilevel framework of identity/state-society interactions, reflecting the local, national and global forces at play. The interactions of these forces shape Hong Kong's layered identity, Macau's ambiguous identity and the two cities' contradictory attitudes towards colonial legacies. This study contributes to a relational and interactional rethinking of national identity and decolonisation.

Abstract:This study developed indicators of age-friendliness for communities in Taiwan that conform to international standards by referring to the World Health Organization Checklist of Essential Features of Age-Friendly Cities and Taiwan's existing indicators. The first stage of the research was based on the WHO's framework and involved a literature review to identify candidate indicators. In the second stage, experts' opinions were collected through a modified Delphi method, and the indicators were screened and revised on the basis of their importance, community enforceability, and generality. The third stage focused on practical feasibility. External parties were invited to offer their opinions regarding the indicators, which were adjusted accordingly. After three rounds of review and re-examination based on the modified Delphi method, the final set of indicators comprised five core indicators and five optional indicators. These indicators can be used to monitor various aspects of communities and determine their age-friendliness.
