Abstract:The notions of a ''weak group entwining structure'' and an ''invertible weak group entwining structure'' are introduced. Furthermore, the relationship between them and group corings is also investigated. It turns out that (weak) group entwining structures and (weak) group entwined modules can be viewed as group corings and comodules over group corings, respectively, which generalizes the recent work of Brzezinski (2002) and Brzezinski et al. (2006).

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:We prove Turner's conjecture, which describes the blocks of the Hecke algebras of the symmetric groups up to derived equivalence as certain explicit Turner double algebras. Turner doubles are Schur-algebra-like `local' objects, which replace wreath products of Brauer tree algebras in the context of the Broué abelian defect group conjecture for blocks of symmetric groups with non-abelian defect groups. The main tools used in the proof are generalized Schur algebras corresponding to wreath products of zigzag algebras and imaginary semicuspidal quotients of affine KLR algebras.

Abstract:A conjecture of Marton, widely known as the polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa conjecture, was recently proved by Gowers, Green, Manners and Tao for any bounded-torsion Abelian group $G$. In this paper we show a few simple modifications that improve their bound in $G=\mathbb{F}_2^n$. Specifically, for $G=\mathbb{F}_2^n$, they proved that any set $A\subseteq G$ with $|A+A|\le K|A|$ can be covered by at most $2K^C$ cosets of a subgroup $H$ of $G$ of cardinality at most $|A|$, with $C=12$. In this paper we prove the same statement for $C=9$.

Abstract:We present necessary and sufficient conditions under which the sum of two group invertible elements in a ring is group invertible. As applications, we establish the existence of group inverses of certain 2 × 2 block-operator matrices over a Banach space. These generalize the known results, e.g., Zhou, Chen and Zhu ( Comm. Algebra 48 (2020), 676–690) and Benítez, Liu and Zhu ( Linear Multilinear Algebra 59 (2011), 279–289).

Abstract:We prove two single-parameter q -supercongruences which were recently conjectured by Guo, and establish their further extensions with one more parameter. Crucial ingredients in the proof are the terminating form of the q -binomial theorem, a Karlsson‚ÄďMinton-type summation formula due to Gasper, and the method of "creative microscoping" developed by Guo and Zudilin. Incidentally, an assertion of Li, Tang and Wang is also confirmed by establishing its q -analogue.

Abstract:The main purpose of this note is to establish an effective version of the Grunwald--Wang Theorem, which asserts that given a family of local characters $\chi^{v}$ of $K_{v}^{*}$ of exponent $m$ where $v \in S$ for a finite set $S$ of primes of $K$, there exists a global character $\chi$ of the idele class group $C_{K}$ of exponent $m$ (unless some special case occurs, when it is $2 m$) whose component at $v$ is $\chi^{v}$. The effectiveness problem for this theorem is to bound the norm $N (\chi)$ of the conductor of $\chi$ in terms of $K$, $m$, $S$ and $N (\chi^{v})$. The Kummer case (when $K$ contains $\mu_{m}$) is easy since it is almost an application of the Chinese Remainder Theorem. In this note, we solve this problem completely in general case, and give three versions of bound, one is with \GRH, and the other two are unconditional bounds. These effective results have some interesting applications in concrete situations. To give a simple example, if we fix $p$ and $l$, one gets a good least upper bound for $N$ such that $p$ is not an $l$--th power mod $N$. One also gets the least upper bound for $N$ such that $l^{r} \mid \phi (N)$ and $p$ is not an $l$--th power mod $N$. Some part of this note is adopted (with some revision) from my unpublished thesis (2001) (\cite{Wang2001}).

Abstract:Let $V$ denote a vector space over two-element field $\mathbb F_2$ with finite positive dimension and endowed with a symplectic form $B.$ Let ${\rm SL}(V)$ denote the special linear group of $V.$ Let $S$ denote a subset of $V.$ Define $Tv(S)$ as the subgroup of ${\rm SL}(V)$ generated by the transvections with direction $\alpha$ for all $\alpha\in S.$ Define $G(S)$ as the graph whose vertex set is $S$ and where $\alpha,\beta\in S$ are connected whenever $B(\alpha,\beta)=1.$ A well-known theorem states that under the assumption that $S$ spans $V,$ the following (i), (ii) are equivalent: (i) $Tv(S)$ is isomorphic to a symmetric group. (ii) $G(S)$ is a claw-free block graph. We give an example which shows that this theorem is not true. We give a modification of this theorem as follows. Assume that $S$ is a linearly independent set of $V$ and no element of $S$ is in the radical of $V.$ Then the above (i), (ii) are equivalent.

Abstract:This paper is a survey on recent results of new series of non-congruent numbers which can be acquired by traditional arithmetic theory of elliptic curves plus a result from algebraic graph theory. More precisely, we start from the following two facts: (1) A square-free positive integer n is a non-congruent number if and only if the rank of the group E(n)(Q) of rational points of the elliptic curve E(n) : y(2) = x(3) - n(2)x is zero. (2) If the 2-Selmer groups S(n) and (S) over cap (n) of the elliptic curve E(n) and its dual curve (E) over cap (n) : y(2) = x(3) + 4n(2)x have minimal sizes |S(n)| = 1 and |(S) over capn| = 4, then rank(E(n)(Q)) = 0. Selmer groups can be determined by the data of locally solvability conditions of the homogenous spaces of elliptic curves E(n) and (E) over cap (n). The next step is to organize the data into carefully constructed graphs so that the Selmer groups have minimum if and only if the graphs have specific "odd" property. By a result in algebraic graph theory, an odd graph can be described by the rank of the Laplace matrix of the graph over F(2). Thus, by computing the rank of a certain matrix over F(2), we can determine all n such that S(n) and (S) over cap (n) have minimum, in which case n is a non-congruent number. After explaining this method and related concepts, we describe the results on new series of non-congruent numbers obtained in this way and illustrate them by examples.
On Converse Theorems for Hilbert Modular Forms Assuming Unramified Twists

Abstract:We prove two results on converse theorems for Hilbert modular forms over totally real fields of degree $r>1$. The first result recovers a Hilbert modular form (of some level) from an $L$-series satisfying functional equations twisted by all the unramified Hecke characters. The second result assumes both the 'unramified' functional equations and an Euler product, and recovers a Hilbert modular form of the expected level predicted by the shape of the functional equations. Our result generalizes the current converse theorems for $\mathrm{GL}_2$ in the case of Hilbert modular forms in that we completely remove the assumptions on ramified twists.

Abstract:We establish a correspondence between inverse sumset theorems (which can be viewed as classifications of approximate (abelian) groups) and inverse theorems for the Gowers norms (which can be viewed as classifications of approximate polynomials). In particular, we show that the inverse sumset theorems of Freiman type are equivalent to the known inverse results for the Gowers U^3 norms, and moreover that the conjectured polynomial strengthening of the former is also equivalent to the polynomial strengthening of the latter. We establish this equivalence in two model settings, namely that of the finite field vector spaces F_2^n, and of the cyclic groups Z/NZ. In both cases the argument involves clarifying the structure of certain types of approximate homomorphism.

Abstract:A conjecture of Rosenberger says that a group of the form $\langle x,y|x^p=y^q=W(x,y)^r=1\rangle$ (with $r>1$) is either virtually solvable or contains a non-abelian free subgroup. This note is an account of an attack on the conjecture in the case $(p,q,r)=(2,4,2)$. The results obtained are only partial, but nevertheless provide strong evidence in support of the conjecture in the case in question, in that the word $W$ in any counterexample is shown to satisfy some strong restrictions. The exponent-sums of $x$ and $y$ in $W$ must be even and odd respectively, while its free-product (or syllable) length must be at least 68. There is also a report of computer investigations which yield a stronger lower bound of 196 for the free-product length.

Abstract:In [11] Sklinos proved that any uncountable free group is not $\aleph_1$-homogenenous. This was later generalized by Belegradek in [1] to torsion-free residually finite relatively free groups, leaving open whether the assumption of residual finiteness was necessary. In this paper we use methods arising from the classical analysis of relatively free groups in infinitary logic to answer Belegradek's question in the negative. Our methods are general and they also applications in varieties with torsion, for example we show that if $V$ contains a non-solvable group, then any uncountable $V$-free group is not $\aleph_1$-homogenenous.
