Abstract:This study evaluated the protective effect of red wine ingestion on the liver morphological variation in male Sprague-Dawlery rats. 70 male Sprague-Dawlery rats were put in 7 groups: wine (3 groups), alcohol (3 groups) and control group. Rats were individually housed in wire cages and maintained at 26 degrees C in an animal room with a 12 h-light/dark cycle. Once every day, rats were given red wine(12.5% v/v), alcohol (12.5% v/v) respectively at the following doses 5 ml center dot kg(-1), 10 ml center dot kg(-1), 15 mL center dot kg(-1) for a period of 90 days. They were followed free access to food and water. During experimental period, feed consumption was measured every day, and weights were measured every one week. After 90 days of treatment, we dissected the rats, and then investigated the morphological variation in liver cell with electron microscopy and optical microscopy, and the livers were analyzed for liver index. The results showed red wine or alcohol had no obvious influence on the rats' body weights during the trial, and had no effect on food utilization. At the same time, the results examined showed: if given the same drinking level, the liver damages in rats' livers of red wine group were much less than those of alcohol group, moreover, the liver conditions in rats of red wine group were improved. Our result preliminarily shows that dry wine make less injury to human liver than alcoholic does, and red wine has anti-oxidation function.
