Abstract:Accelerated degradation of SmFe(8.5)Nx (x=1.4 similar to 1.5) powder and the Zn-bonded magnets has been investigated by aging and oxidation at 200 to 300 degrees C in air or under vacuum to estimate their thermal stability. It was found that the Zn-bonded Sm-Fe-N magnets show high resistance to aging at 200 degrees C or lower, both in air and in vacuum. However, the degradation rate (DR) is one order of magnitude higher than that of sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets. The DR in magnetic properties become substantial at aging above 250 degrees C due to the release of nitrogen from the lattice together with oxidation. By aging in air at 250 degrees C or above, DR shows a two-step behavior, i.e., it is very fast during the first 12 hours due to severe oxidation then levels off due to the protecting oxide layer. While the DR during aging in vacuum is monotonic and is one order of magnitude less severe than in air. Weight gain of Sm-Fe-N powder during isothermal oxidation at 250 degrees C shows a stepwise parabolic increase nature, depicting built-up of oxide layer then break-off mechanism.
