The basic idea of MR/FDTD is to divide the whole computational domain into a number of sub-regions containing strong scatters embedded into a uniform background. The FDTD method is used to compute the EM field inside all the sub-regions, while Kirchhoff integration technique is used to compute the EM field in the uniform background. As for airborne radar simulation, a large portion of the computational domain is the uniform region of air that occupies the area between the source antenna and ground surface where analytic approach of Kirchhoff integration technique can be adopted. In contrast FDTD numerical computation is used for the heterogeneous subsurface in the ice layer. Solutions from the two regions are linked together at the interface coinciding with the land surface. The proposed approach for airborne radar is first validated with a numerical case study of crevasse imaging using full FDTD for land surface GPR, then extended to airborne radar simulation using MR/FDTD algorithms.
