She writes, "[t]he implausibility of Miss Jiang's character is a serious problem for the film. Many feminists, including myself, find Xu Jinglei's rendition of Zweig's story painful to watch, as she reproduces without any irony the logical extreme of the traditional value that a woman must live through her man as his selfless slave and still call it love." Thus, Miss Jiang is "in the end unable to maintain the selfless purpose that has motivated her life." Old plus a surname is a common way that Chinese people use to address a person who is senior in age. Xu Jinglei being called "Lao Xu" is interesting because, while few girls would like to be addressed as "old," Xu, as a young woman, not only does not mind but also welcomes it. For her, this address shows the intimate relationship between her and her readers and audiences. It also helps her divest her old image of a pretty, young, and unsophisticated girl and build a new image of a mature and intelligent woman whose success relies more on her talent and diligence than appearance. Most importantly, this gender-neutral address is one of those many instances through which Xu asserts her uniqueness in gender relationship.23 They include Wang Shuo, one of the most popular writers in the 1990s, whose so-called "Holligan Literature" marks the structural transformation to rampant commercialization in contemporary Chinese literature; Zhang Yadong, one of the most influential pop music producers in China; actor Huang Jue, who stars the unknown woman's lover in Letter; and Stanley Huang, a Taiwanese-American pop singer, music producer, and actor.24 Zhang and Ma, "All Progress Is Attained in the Process of Undertaking Responsibilities," 53.25 Zhang, "Becoming an Auteur," 294.26 Some critics notice the naming trick that Xu Jinglei plays in the film: while the female lead that she plays is called Miss Jiang, the male lead that actor Jiang Wen plays is called Mr. Xu. In my view, this trick is more than a simple play of nomination; instead, it signifies a cross-reference between the world on screen and reality. In fact, Jiang Wen is also an actor known for his unique personality and experience. Both Jiang Wen and Xu Jinglei have established public images that can be categorized as wenyi actors. This name trick reminds the audience of the relevance of these memorable characters to their actors' images in reality. It can be regarded as a part of Xu Jinglei's image building maneuver.27 See note 16 above, 44–45. Guo cites Monica Tan in defining wenqing, an abbreviation of wenyi qingnian: "They are twee, nostalgia-driven, and hipsterish, with a dash of poet. Spiritual at heart, yet living in a very secular, money-driven modern China, wenqing are marked as highly individualistic, romantic, cultural connoisseurs." This definition is useful but at the same time problematic. For one thing, Tan sees wenyi qingnian in China as a counterpart of hipsters in the US, and emphasizes the subcultural and countercultural aspects of wenyi. These aspects are indeed becoming an increasingly important part of Chinese wenyi today and deserve further studies. However, Tan's parallel between wenyi qingnian and hipsters ignores the rich history and complex cultural context of wenyi in China. Tan, "China Has Hipsters, Too."28 Se -Abstract Truncated-
