Abstract:Incineration residues of hospital waste contain a considerable amount of hazardous materials such as dioxins and heavy metals. Especially, the leaching concentrations of Pb, Cd and Zn in bag fly ash (FA) far exceed the hazardous waste landfill regulatory thresholds, which should not be landfilled directly according to traditional means. To deal with the issues, ash melting treatment technology for hospital waste was developed in combination with electric furnace metallurgical processes. The lab-scale melting tests of bottom ash (BA) alone, a mixture of BA with FA using 2kg DC electronic arc furnace showed the obtained slag is single-phase amorphous, glassy product. Reduced volume of two slag in comparison to BA, mixed ash respectively reaches 78%, 80.5%. Heavy metals of slag are combined into the Si-O network by the melting process and has very low leachability. Residual fractions of Pb, Cd and Zn are lower and higher Cl content of raw ash can decrease residual fraction in melting process. The slag is environmentally acceptable and has potential application. Melting treatment of ash from hospital waste incineration can simultaneously achieve the triple of volume reduction, detoxification and resource recycling.
