Abstract:Central sewerage systems consume not only high amounts of freshwater but also dilute nutrients (phosphorus, nitrogen) and organic substances to such an extent that only a small part of nutrients can be reclaimed and recycled for agricultural use, which leads to water squander, losses of nutrients, and deteriorated environment etc. In this paper, some innovative and alternative approaches to improve or substitute for conventional sanitation system are introduced, which can save drinking water and enable water and nutrients recycling in a hygienic and effective way. Furthermore, the development tendency of such systems is also described in order to help people to know or understand the development goal, which will be very helpful for practical application of the approaches.
