Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are an emerging, environmentally friendly engineering system employed in China. They require lower investment and operation costs while providing higher treatment efficiency and more ecosystem services than conventional wastewater treatment methods. Introduced to China in 1987, CW systems used for wastewater treatment have rapidly increased in number, particularly since the late 1990s. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art application of CW systems for water pollution treatment by reviewing the basics of the technology and its historical development and performance efficiency. Current progress, limitations, future concerns, and the challenges of CW technologies are also discussed. Also highlighted is the need for sufficient and appropriate data to assist in the further development of CW systems and the implementation of integrated "bottom-up" and "top-down" approaches by both the public in general and government bodies in particular.

Abstract:With the unique advantages of cost-effectiveness and low energy consumption, constructed wetlands (CWs) are commonly used for treatment of secondary municipal wastewaters. Over the last decades, CWs have gained increased popularity for treating agricultural runoff and agro-industrial wastewater. This review highlights the practice, application, and research on wetland technology, placing them in the overall context of the need for reliable and sustainable solutions to managing agricultural runoff and agro-industrial wastewater. A critical assessment of the performance and effectiveness of wetland systems for removing various contaminants of importance to agriculture is presented. The design parameters and operational conditions affecting the efficiency of contaminant removal in CWs receiving agricultural runoff and agro-industrial wastewater are also discussed. The role of proper pretreatment, artificial aeration, effluent recirculation, in-series design, and microbial dynamics on the enhancement of treatment is provided. Challenges and perspectives for future research on agricultural treatment wetlands are also addressed.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are affordable and reliable green technologies for the treatment of various types of wastewater. Compared to conventional treatment systems, CWs offer an environmentally friendly approach, are low cost, have fewer operational and maintenance requirements, and have a high potential for being applied in developing countries, particularly in small rural communities. However, the sustainable management and successful application of these systems remain a challenge. Therefore, after briefly providing basic information on wetlands and summarizing the classification and use of current CWs, this study aims to provide and inspire sustainable solutions for the performance and application of CWs by giving a comprehensive review of CWs’ application and the recent development of their sustainable design, operation, and optimization for wastewater treatment. To accomplish this objective, thee design and management parameters of CWs, including macrophyte species, media types, water level, hydraulic retention time (HRT), and hydraulic loading rate (HLR), are discussed. Besides these, future research on improving the stability and sustainability of CWs are highlighted. This article provides a tool for researchers and decision-makers for using CWs to treat wastewater in a particular area. This paper presents an aid for informed analysis, decision-making, and communication. The review indicates that major advances in the design, operation, and optimization of CWs have greatly increased contaminant removal efficiencies, and the sustainable application of this treatment system has also been improved.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been introduced to and developed in China for environmental engineering over the most prosperous three decades (1990-2020). To study the origin, development process, and future trend of CWs, this review summarized a wide range of literatures between 1990 and 2020 by Chinese authors. Firstly, the publication number over years, research highlights, and the author contributions with the most published papers in this field were conducted through bibliometric analysis. Secondly, the most principal components of CWs, substrates and macrophytes were summarized and analyzed. Thirdly, the typical application cases from traditional CWs, pond systems to combined pond-wetland systems were presented. In China, CWs were predominately distributed in the east of the so-called 'Hu Huanyong Line'. Therefore CWs were limited by the socio-economic level and climatic conditions. It is unquestionable that the overall level of China's CWs has improved significantly, and one of the most prominent features has started towards the plural pattern development. There has been a trend of large-scale or low-cost CW application in the recent years. However, lifecycle research and management are required for better strategies in the future.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CW) is an environmentally friendly technique for removing pollutants from wastewater and has been applied to municipal wastewater, petroleum refinery wastewater, agriculture drainage, acid mine drainage, etc. The past decade has seen a remarkable number of innovations in the exponentially growing field of microbiology. This manuscript covers a critical review of key aspects of CW, such as various types of CW, the contaminants and their removal mechanisms, degradation pathways, challenges and opportunities, materials, applications, and theory with a focus on recent advances in the last three decades. In addition, an attempt has been taken to project future advances in the field of CW and facilitate these advances by framing key unsolved problems in CW. Guidelines are prepared for the fast-growing CW field through the standardization of key design aspects. This review covers the evaluation of the current state-of-the-art of CW technology and provides definitions and performance metric nomenclature in an effort to unify the fast-growing CW community. It also contains an outlook on the emerging trends in CW and proposes future research and development directions.

Abstract:There is a growing need for more sustainable wastewater treatment technologies to provide non-conventional water sources. Constructed Wetland systems (CW) are viewed as a low-cost treatment technology with proven treatment efficiency. CWS can treat a variety of contaminants using low energy and natural systems by altering various design parameters. There are two configuration types of constructed wetlands: vertical (VF) and horizontal flow CW (HF). Both configurations have been widely adopted in both large and pilot scale studies with proven records of reasonable wastewater treatment efficiency. The current article reviews the recent development of CW technology and highlights the main achievements and successful applications for wastewater treatment at various locations. The review has indicated that a considerable removal efficiency is attained while using engineered CW systems with variable treatment rates for various pollutants. The treatment efficiency is a function of various parameters including wastewater type, scale dimensions, applied plant and the retention time. The review compared the treatment efficiency for both VF and HF and has revealed that various removal rates of BOD, COD, TSS, TN, TP and NH4 was attained using both configurations. Yet, the removal efficiency in the case of VF was slightly higher compared with the HF with an average treatment level of 77% and 68% was achieved in both systems, respectively. The review revealed that the CW is an effective and sustainable technology for wastewater treatment with the initial influent level, microbial biofilm, detention time, plant species and configuration among the most dominating parameters that are directly controlling the removal rates.

Abstract:In recent years, increasing attention has been given for reclamation and reuse of water (wastewater and stormwater) in the context of augmenting water supplies. Constructed wetland (CW) systems make use of natural substrates, plants, and microbes for decontamination of wastewater and stormwater. These nature-based water treatment systems are cost-effective and sustainable. This review critically analyzes the recent advances on the application of CW systems for removal of total suspended solids (TSS), various chemical (nutrients including total nitrogen and total phosphorus, heavy metals, and organics) and microbial pollutants ( Escherichia coli , enterococci, fecal coliforms, etc.) in wastewater and stormwater. Furthermore, the influence of key factors including CW configurations, substrates, vegetation, ambient temperature/seasonal changes, oxygen levels and hydraulic retention time on the performance of CW systems are discussed. Insights into various pollutant removal mechanisms, microbial diversity and modeling (kinetics, hydrological and mechanistic) are provided. CW systems show good performance for removal of diverse pollutants from wastewater and stormwater. The pollutant removal mechanisms include physical (sedimentation and filtration), chemical (sorption, complexation and precipitation) and biological (biodegradation, microbial transformation and microbial/plant assimilation) processes. The dominant microbial communities enriched in CW systems include nitrifiers, denitrifiers and organic biodegraders. The key knowledge gaps in the development of multifunctional CW systems are highlighted. We believe that this critical review would help urban planners, environmental engineers and managers with implementation of innovative strategies for wastewater and stormwater reclamation and reuse to alleviate water stress in urban areas and to contribute to environmental sustainability. Moreover, this review would help to optimize the performance of CW systems as well as to develop regulatory guidelines for installation, operation and maintenance of CW systems.

Abstract:Updated CW technology was reviewed.Use of CW for water recycling as irrigation and greywater reuse was discussed.Use of CW for source water pre-treatment is highlighted.Perspectives of the CW especially in China are addressed.It has been well recognised that the representative activated sludge process as the principal wastewater treatment technology is not only expensive but requires supervision by technical staff. In line with the need for simple, inexpensive, yet effective methods of wastewater treatment, constructed wetland (CW) is an alternative option and has been increasingly applied for wastewater treatment practice worldwide. The paper provides an informatics glance of the updated development of the CW technology, while some trends and new development including the use of CW for water recycling as irrigation and greywater reuse as well as drinking water source water treatment are discussed. Perspectives of the CW especially in China have been highlighted. Overall, CW provides environmentally friendly solution for water environmental protection, while it owns inherent benefits of aesthetic appearance and wildlife habitats. Abstract:This article examines the utilization and advancements of constructed wetlands (CWs) in South Asia (SA), focusing on their roles, costs, and efficacy enhancements through pre- and post-treatment units for various pollutants. Notable findings include Phragmites and Canna species as commonly used macrophytes, achieving high removal rates for various pollutants. CWs consistently remove total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, emerging contaminants, and antimicrobial resistant bacteria at substantial rates. Anaerobic baffled reactors are effective pretreatment devices for high-strength wastewater. Moreover, CWs exhibit lower operational and maintenance costs compared to conventional treatment methods. However, the bibliometric analysis reveals limited regional cooperation in SA. Key challenges identified include the absence of guidelines for media, vegetation, and maintenance. The review underscores the necessity for further research in optimizing CWs' efficiency through land area management, plant selection, and enhanced design and operation and maintenance protocols.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) have played a vital role in mitigating water pollution as a significant technology employed by over 80 countries worldwide since its inception in 1950s. It has witnessed a huge transformation from a series of experiments into an established technology successfully applied in various wastewater treatments. Since its introduction, CW has seen significant advancements and improvements. Over time, this change has been reflected in the design incorporation of hybrid and specialized systems. Also, the addition of operational improvements, such as tidal flow, effluent circulation, and aeration etc., has expanded the technology. Additionally, currently large-scale operations are witnessed in the USA, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. Together with recent investigations into the removal of new pollutants, substrate optimization for increased pollutant removal reflects the growth in CW research and development. This review assesses the growth of this field by taking a retrospective look at its developmental process from the genesis, highlighting its current state and estimating its expected future technological advancements. CW has had a significant impact on wastewater treatment since its inception, as we look ahead, it offers potential opportunities for future water sustainability due to its versatility and effectiveness in addressing numerous water-related challenges.

Abstract:Wastewater recycling for non-potable uses has gained significant attention to mitigate the high pressure on freshwater resources. This requires using a sustainable technique to treat natural municipal wastewater as an alternative to conventional methods, especially in arid and semi-arid rural areas. One of the promising techniques applied to satisfy the objective of wastewater reuse is the constructed wetlands (CWs) which have been used extensively in most countries worldwide through the last decades. The present study introduces a significant review of the definition, classification, and components of CWs, identifying the mechanisms controlling the removal process within such units. Vertical, horizontal, and hybrid CWs were used to treat different types of wastewater from individual households, waste disposal sites, oil refineries, agricultural production, and tannery effluent. The effects of several design and operational factors related to the type of plant, substrate, and flow direction are studied and surveyed in this work to be the starting point for researchers in future investigations

Abstract:Artificial wetlands are used in over 50 countries to sustainably treat wastewater. These constructed wetlands (CWs) make use of natural biogeochemical and physical processes to remove organic matter and nutrients, while providing co-benefits such as ecosystem services and recreation. However, their performance can be variable, as local weather conditions, wastewater composition and operation can affect contaminant removal. In this Review, we discuss the global application and distribution of CWs, and factors affecting their functioning. Based on data from 335 field-scale CWs, hybrid CWs (which use two or more types of CW during water treatment) are the most effective for water-quality improvement and greenhouse gas mitigation, removing 76%, 63% and 72% of organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus, respectively (based on the median values). Plant species, substrate selection, and environmental and hydraulic conditions affect performance, with variations in contaminant removal performance mainly related to temperature, hydraulic residence time and pollutant loading rates. Pollutant removal and long-term performance of CWs can be enhanced through strategies such as artificial aeration, cold-resistant plant selection, electron donor supplementation and clogging repair. Engineers and scientists must work together to design and manage CWs, ideally maximizing their co-benefits alongside pollution control.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are characterized by low construction cost, convenient maintenance and management, and environmentally friendly features. They have emerged as promising technologies for decentralized sewage treatment across rural areas. Source separation of black water and gray water can facilitate sewage recycling and reuse of reclaimed water, reduce the size of treatment facilities, and lower infrastructure investment and operating cost. This is consistent with the concept of sustainable development. However, black water contains high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen, and the denitrification capacity of CWs is not excellent due to insufficient carbon source. Therefore, application of CWs for black water treatment faces challenges. This article provides a review on the progress in CWs for treatment of the sewage with high-influent nitrogen load, with emphasis on the commonly used strengthening means and the role of plants in nitrogen removal via CWs. The current issues of rural sewage treatment with high-influent nitrogen load by CWs are also assessed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are discussed for the optimization of CWs-enhanced denitrification strategies.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic abstract</h3>

Abstract:This paper presents a review of the mechanisms and advantages of the constructed wetland (CW). The wetland as land-intensive biological treatment systems has complicated purificative mechanisms, including physio-chemistry such as substrate adsorption, substrate filtration, plant adsorption, pollutant sediment ion exchange and biochemistry such as plant sorption, microbiology oxidation, microbiology ammunition. Besides the aesthetic aspect of macrophytes to provide wildlife habitats, the advantages of CW are relatively low cost, simple operation with stable effluent quality and good resistance to shock loading. In recent years, these systems have been used in the purification of domestic sewage. Nowadays attention has focused particularly on the use of constructed wetlands for the treatment of industrial effluents. According to the study and present state of constructed wetland for industrial wastewater treatment, feasibility of CW for special industrial wastewater treatment and investigations in the future were discussed.

Abstract:Constructed wetland (CW) is an effective ecological technology to treat water pollution and has the significant advantages of high impact resistance, simple construction process, and low maintenance cost. However, under extreme conditions such as low temperature, high salt concentration, and multiple types of pollutants, some bottlenecks exist, including the difficulty in improving operating efficiency and the low pollutant removal rate. Microbial electrochemical technology is an emerging clean energy technology and has the similar structure and pollutant removal mechanism to CW. Microbial electrochemistry combined with CW can improve the overall removal effect of pollutants in wetlands. This review summarizes characterization methods of microbial electrochemistry-enhanced constructed wetland systems, construction methods of different composite systems, mechanisms of single and composite systems, and removal effects of composite systems on different pollutants in water bodies. Based on the shortcomings of existing studies, the potential breakthroughs in microbial electrochemistry-enhanced constructed wetlands are proposed for developing the optimization solution of constructed wetlands.

Abstract:Constructed wetland microcosms (CWMs) are artificially designed ecosystem which utilizes both complex and ordinary interactions between supporting media, macrophytes, and microorganisms to treat almost all types of wastewater. CWMs are considered as green and sustainable techniques which require lower energy input, less operational and maintenance cost and provide critical ecological benefits such as wildlife habitat, aquaculture, groundwater recharge, flood control, recreational uses, and add aesthetic value. They are good alternatives to conventional treatment systems particularly for smaller communities as well as distant and decentralized locations. The pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and temperature are the key controlling factors while several other parameters such as hydraulic loading rates (HLR), hydraulic retention time (HRT), diversity of macrophytes, supporting media, and water depth are critical to achieving better performance. From the literature survey, it is evaluated that the removal performance of CWMs can be improved significantly through recirculation of effluent and artificial aeration (intermittent). This review paper presents an assessment of CWMs as a sustainable option for treatment of wastewater nutrients, organics, and heavy metals from domestic wastewater. Initially, a concise note on the CWMs and their components are presented, followed by a description of treatment mechanisms, major constituents involved in the treatment process, and overall efficiency. Finally, the effects of ecological factors and challenges for their long-term operations are highlighted.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CW) are widely used for wastewater treatment and environmental protection. However, their large land footprint poses challenges in terms of land use efficiency. Global efforts have been made to develop the novel-integrated techniques and strategies in CW to enhance wastewater treatment ability and capacity. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of configuration-operational strategies and intensification methods on the land-effective occupation of CW. Firstly, regarding configuration modifications, this review has focused on optimizing the operational strategies and layout of CW to improve land use efficiency. Different types of CW systems, stacking and varied aeration methods have been employed to minimize land area and enhance treatment performance. Furthermore, integrating CW with other treatment technologies (such as microbial electrochemical technologies, MET), and developing novel wetland (such as floating wetlands, FWs), enable energy recovery and resource utilization to further improve land use efficiency. Lastly, this study comprehensively evaluated and proposed recirculation stacking hybrid constructed wetland (RSHCW), which achieves optimal performance and land use efficiency in a sustainable and cost-effective manner. In conclusion, optimizing strategies and developing innovative technologies enhance the land utilization of CW to promote their extensive application.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) for wastewater treatment are engineered systems that are designed and operated in order to use all natural processes involved in the removal of pollutants from wastewaters. CWs are designed to take advantage of many of the same processes that occur in natural wetlands, but do so within a more controlled environment. The basic classification is based on the presence/absence of wastewater on the wetland surface. The subsurface flow of CWs can be classified according to the direction of the flow to horizontal and vertical. The combination of various types of CWs is called hybrid CW. The CWs technology began in the 1950s in Germany, but the major extension across the world occurred during the 1990s and early 2000s. The early CWs in Germany were designed as hybrid CWs; however, during the 1970s and 1980s, horizontal subsurface flow CWs were mostly designed. The stricter limits for nitrogen, and especially ammonia, applied in Europe during the 1990s, brought more attention to vertical subsurface flow and hybrid systems. Constructed wetlands have been used to treat various types of wastewater, including sewage, industrial and agricultural wastewaters, various drainage and runoff waters and landfill leachate. Recently, more attention has also been paid to constructed treatment wetlands as part of a circular economy in the urban environments: it is clear that CWs are a good fit for the new concept of sponge cities.

Abstract:Wetlands, either constructed or natural, offer a cheaper and low-cost alternative technology for wastewater treatment. A constructed wetland system that is specifically engineered for water quality improvement as a primary purpose is termed as a ‘Constructed Wetland Treatment System’ (CWTS). In the past, many such systems were constructed to treat low volumes of wastewater loaded with easily degradable organic matter for isolated populations in urban areas. However, widespread demand for improve in water quality, and water reclamation and reuse, is currently the driving force for the implementation of CWTS all over the world. Recent concerns over wetland losses have generated a need for the creation of manmade wetlands, which are intended to emulate the functions and values of natural wetlands that have been destroyed. Natural characteristics are applied to CWTS with emergent macrophyte stands that duplicate the physical, chemical and biological processes of natural wetland systems. The number of CWTS in use has very much increased in the past 50 years. The use of constructed wetlands is gaining rapid interest. Most of these systems cater for tertiary treatment from towns and cities. They are larger in size, usually using surface-flow system to remove low concentration of nutrient (N and P) and suspended solids. However, in some countries, these constructed wetland treatment systems are usually used to provide secondary treatment of domestic sewage for village populations. These constructed wetland systems have been seen as an economically attractive, energy-efficient way of providing high standards of wastewater treatment. Typically, wetlands are constructed for one or more of four primary purposes: creation of habitat to compensate for natural wetlands converted for agriculture and urban development, water quality improvement, flood control, and production of food and fiber (constructed aquaculture wetlands). In present research the sewage water is treated by constructing Horizontal sub – surface flow constructed wetland, and reed grass is used as vegetation to treat waste and make the sewage waste water clean.
