Abstract:In this correspondence, we present 129 new linear codes over F8 and F9 based on the construction by Xing and Niederreiter using algebraic function fields and places of small degrees. In addition, we construct some global function fields in which the number of rational places improves the lower bounds given by van der Geer and van der Vlugt.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of nonlinear algebraic-geometry codes based on evaluation of functions on infinitely near points. Let X be an algebraic variety over the finite field F-q. An infinitely near point of order mu is a point P on a variety X' obtained by mu iterated blowing-ups starting from X. Given such a point P and a function f on X, we give a definition of f(P) which is nonlinear in f (unless mu = 0). Given a set S of infinitely near points {P-1, . . . , P-n}, we associate to f its set of values (f(P-1), . . . , f(P-n)) in F-q(n). Let V be a k dimensional vector space of functions on X. Evaluation of functions in V at the n points of S gives a map V -> F-q(n), which we view as an (n, q(k), d) code when the map is injective. Here d is the largest integer such that a function in V is uniquely determined by its values on any n - d + 1 points of S. These codes generalize the Reed-Solomon codes, but unlike the R-S codes they can be constructed to have arbitrarily large code length n. The first nontrivial case is where X = A(Fq)(2), affine 2-space, and we study this case in detail.

Abstract:Ever since the seminal work of Goppa on algebraic-geometry codes, rational points on algebraic curves over finite fields have been an important research topic for algebraic geometers and coding theorists. The focus in this application of algebraic geometry to coding theory is on algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points (relative to the genus). Recently, the authors discovered another important application of such curves, namely to the construction of low-discrepancy sequences. These sequences are needed for numerical methods in areas as diverse as computational physics and mathematical finance. This has given additional impetus to the theory of, and the search for, algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points. This book aims to sum up the theoretical work on algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points and to discuss the applications of such curves to algebraic coding theory and the construction of low-discrepancy sequences.

Abstract:In the present paper, we make use of the quadratic field Q ( −3 ) to construct dense packings in the Euclidean spaces. With the help from good error-correcting codes, we are able to produce several packings with the best-known densities. Furthermore, if we assume that the best upper bound in coding theory developed by Aaltonen, Ben-Haim and Litsyn could be achieved, then the Minkowski bound would be improved.

Abstract:Function-field codes provide a general perspective on the construction of algebraic-geometry codes. We briefly review the theory of function-field codes and establish some new results in this theory, including a propagation rule. Abstract:Linear codes with few weights have been an interesting subject of study for many years, as these codes have applications in secrete sharing, authentication codes, association schemes, and strongly regular graphs. In this paper, linear codes with a few weights are constructed from inhomogeneous quadratic functions over the finite field $\gf(p)$, where $p$ is an odd prime. They include some earlier linear codes as special cases. The weight distributions of these linear codes are also determined.

Abstract:A set of n-tuples over Z8 is called a code over Z8 or a Z8 code if it is a Z8 module. A particularly interesting family of Z8-cyclic codes are quadratic residue codes. We define such codes in terms of their idempotent generators and show that these codes also have many good properties which are analogous in many respects to properties of quadratic residue codes over a field. In particular we show that the quadratic residuce codes over Z8 have large automorphism groups which will be useful in decoding these codes by using the powerful permutation decoding methods described by F. J. MacWilliams and N. J. A. Sloane (1978, “Theory of Error-Correcting Codes,” North-Holland, Amsterdam). We also define a distance preserving map from ZN8 (Lee distance) to Z4N2 (Hamming distance).

Abstract:For quadratic curves over $F_p$, the number of solutions, which is governed by an analogue of the Mordell-Weil group, is expressed with the Legendre symbol of a coefficient of quadratic curves. Focusing on the number of solutions, a quadratic curve analogue of the modular form in the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture is proposed. This modular form yields the Gaussian sum and also possesses some modular transformation structure.

Abstract:By employing algebraic curves, we give some new asymptotic bounds for (q-1)-ary and (q+1)-ary codes, where q >; 2 is a prime power. In particular, our asymptotic bound for (q-1)-ary codes improves on the bound obtained directly from alphabet restriction given by Tafasman and Vlăduţ , [Th. 1.3.19], while our asymptotic bound for (q+1) -ary codes includes Elkies' result for the square q case (STOC 01) (however, the idea in this paper is different from Elkies' one). Our constructions of asymptotically good nonlinear codes are NOT the same as Goppa's construction of algebraic geometry codes in the sense that we consider evaluation of functions at some pole points as well.

Abstract:A double covering of a Galois extension K/k in the sense of P. Das (2000) [4] is an extension K˜/K of degree ⩽2 such that K˜/k is Galois. In this paper we determine explicitly all double coverings of any quadratic extensions, the Carlitz cyclotomic extensions of the rational function field over a finite field, and their maximal real subfields. In the case of quadratic extensions, we get the result by Hilbert Theorem 90 and in the function field cases, we get the results by using the method in G.W. Anderson (2002) [1] with a modification and using the results in S. Bae et al. (2003) [2] and S. Bae and L. Yin (2004) [3]. We also construct explicitly a large kind of (q−1)-th coverings of cyclotomic function fields.
Imaginary quadratic fields $F$ with $X_0(15)(F)$ finite

Abstract:Caraiani and Newton have proven that if $F$ is an imaginary quadratic number field such that $X_0(15)$ has rank $0$ over $F$, then every elliptic curve over $F$ is modular. This paper is concerned with the quadratic fields $F=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$ for a prime number $p$. We give explicit conditions on $p$ under which the rank is $0$, and prove that these conditions are satisfied for $87,5\%$ of the primes for which the rank is expected to be even based on the parity conjecture. We also show these conditions are satisfied if and only if rank $0$ follows from a $4$-descent over $\mathbb{Q}$ on the quadratic twist $X_0(15)_{-p}$. To prove this, we perform two consecutive $2$-descents and prove this gives rank bounds equivalent to those obtained from a $4$-descent using visualisation techniques for $\mathrm{Sha}[2]$. In fact we prove a more general connection between higher descents for elliptic curves which seems interesting in its own right.

Abstract:For a given irreducible and monic polynomial $f(x) \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ of degree $4$, we consider the quadratic twists by square-free integers $q$ of the genus one quartic ${H\, :\, y^2=f(x)}$ \[ H_q \, :\, qy^2=f(x). \] We say that a curve $C$ is everywhere locally soluble (ELS) if it has a solution in $\mathbb{R}$ and in $\mathbb{Q}_p$ for every prime $p$ (i.e. if $C(\mathbb{R})\neq \emptyset$ and $C(\mathbb{Q}_p)\neq \emptyset$ for all primes $p$). Let $L=\{q\in \mathbb{N} :\, q \text{ is square-free and } H_q \text{ is ELS}\}$ denote the set of positive square-free integers $q$ for which $H_q$ is everywhere locally soluble. For a real number $x$ let ${L(x)= \#\{q\in L:\, q<x\}}$ be the number of elements in $L$ that are less then $x$. Furthermore, let us denote with \[ F(s)=\sum_{n \in L} \frac{1}{n^s} \] the corresponding Dirichlet's series of the set $L$. In this paper, we obtain that \[ L(x) = c_f \frac{x}{(\ln{x})^{m}}+O\left(\frac{x}{(\ln{x})^\alpha}\right) \] for some constants $c_f$, $m$ and $\alpha$ only depending on $f$ such that $m<\alpha \leq 1+m$. We also express the Dirichlet's series $F(s)$ via Dedekind's zeta functions of certain number fields.

Abstract:Based on curves over finite fields with many rational points, we present two constructions of linear codes from local expansions of functions at a fixed rational point. It turns out that codes from our constructions have the same bound on their parameters as Goppa's (1981) geometry codes. Furthermore, we prove that our second construction is equivalent to Goppa's construction. Finally, an additional construction of linear codes from maximal curves shows that these codes have better parameters than Goppa's geometry codes from maximal curves for a certain interval of parameters.

Abstract:We determine the Weierstrass semigroup at one and two totally ramified places in a Kummer extension defined by the affine equation $y^{m}=\prod_{i=1}^{r} (x-\alpha_i)^{\lambda_i}$ over $K$, the algebraic closure of $\mathbb{F}_q$, where $\alpha_1, \dots, \alpha_r\in K$ are pairwise distinct elements, and $\gcd(m, \sum_{i=1}^{r}\lambda_i)=1$. For an arbitrary function field, from the knowledge of the minimal generating set of the Weierstrass semigroup at two rational places, the set of pure gaps is characterized. We apply these results to construct algebraic geometry codes over certain function fields with many rational places.
