Abstract:All-cellulose composites are usually prepared by a partial cellulose dissolution approach, using of ionic liquids or organic solvents. Here, an all-cellulose film based on moist ramie fibers was prepared by hot-pressing. The original ramie fiber was degummed, alkali treated, aligned, and mounted into a specially designed mold. The wet ramie fiber “cake” was pressed into a transparent film. The structure, mechanical properties, moisture sorption, and optical properties of the films were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction, tensile tests, gravimetric method, and integrating sphere devices. The all-cellulose films showed an ultimate strength of 620 MPa and a Young’s modulus of 39.7 GPa with low moisture sorption and optical transmittance of 85%. These eco-friendly all-cellulose films are of interest for laminated composites, as coatings and in photonics applications.

Abstract:Transparent films or substrates are ubiquitously used in photonics and optoelectronics, with glass and plastics as traditional choice of materials. Transparent films made of cellulose nanofibers are reported recently. However, all these films are isotropic in nature. This work, for the first time, reports a remarkably facile and effective approach to fabricating anisotropic transparent films directly from wood. The resulting films exhibit an array of exceptional optical and mechanical properties. The well‐aligned cellulose nanofibers in natural wood are maintained during delignification, leading to an anisotropic film with high transparency (≈90% transmittance) and huge intensity ratio of transmitted light up to 350%. The anisotropic film with well‐aligned cellulose nanofibers has a mechanical tensile strength of up to 350 MPa, nearly three times of that of a film with randomly distributed cellulose nanofibers. Atomistic mechanics modeling further reveals the dependence of the film mechanical properties on the alignment of cellulose nanofibers through the film thickness direction. This study also demonstrates guided liquid transport in a mesoporous, anisotropic wood film and its possible application in enabling new nanoelectronic devices. These unique and highly desirable properties of the anisotropic transparent film can potentially open up a range of green electronics and nanofluidics.
Reinforcement of ramie fibers on regenerated cellulose films

Abstract:All-cellulose composite films reinforced with ramie fibers were prepared from aqueous NaOH–urea solvent system via a simple pathway. The structure and physical properties of the modified ramie fibers and composite films were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, ultraviolet–visible spectroscope, thermogravimetry, biodegradation tests and tensile tests. The results revealed that a good compatibility existed between the modified ramie fibers and cellulose matrix. The all-cellulose composite films exhibited high tensile strength, good optical transmittance, thermal stability, and biodegradability. The tensile strength and elastic modulus of the composite films increased with an increase of the ramie fibers. These high-strength biodegradable films prepared by a “green” pathway have potential applications as packaging materials and biomaterials.

Abstract:In this study, cellulose nanofibril (CNF) films from ramie fibers were prepared with different pectin compositions and contents, and the influence of residual pectin on the overall performances of CNF films was evaluated. There was no significant effect of the residual pectin composition on the properties of obtained CNF films. However, when the content of residual pectin was increased from 0.45 % to 9.16 %, the surface area and water absorption of CNF films were increased from 0.2223 to 0.3300 m 2 /g, and from 93.51 % to 122.42 %, respectively. Pectin covers the CNF surface and act as a physical barrier between the cellulose fibrils; thus the nanocellulose films with high pectin content will have a loose and porous structure, resulting in a high surface area and a high water absorption. Besides, with the residual pectin content decreasing from 9.16 % to 0.45 %, the UVA light transmittance and tensile strength of CNF films were increased from 30.6 % to 59.9 %, and from 37.67 to 100.26 MPa, respectively. After removal of amorphous pectins in CNFs, the low pectin containing CNFs are able to pack more compactly to form a strong and thin film. This paper provides guidance for the preparation of CNF films with different performance requirements.

Abstract:Chinese traditional Xuan paper is distinguished for its high strength, high toughness, and high flexibility. Microscopically, this remarkable mechanical property is derived from its uniform nano- and microscale structure. Here, inspired by the multiscale structure design of biomaterials and Xuan paper, we report an ultrastrong and ultraflexible transparent cellulose fiber film with an ultrafine nano- and microscale structure. Through introducing micron-sized cellulose fibers into the cellulose nanofiber network, the multiscale film combines high strength (258 MPa) and toughness (7.90 MJ m–3) and low thermal expansion coefficients as well as high light transmittance (82.7%) and high haze (97.4%) simultaneously in one material. Moreover, the multiscale design endows the film to be restored to intactness after being fully folded and rolled, making it a high-performance and eco-friendly alternative film material for practical application in flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:Cellulose nanofibrils are attractive as building blocks for advanced photonic, optoelectronic, microfluidic, and bio-based devices ranging from transistors and solar cells to fluidic and biocompatible injectable devices. For the first time, an ultrastrong and ultratough cellulose film, which is composed of densely packed bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibrils with hierarchical fibril alignments, is successfully demonstrated. The molecular level alignment stems from the intrinsic parallel orientation of crystalline cellulose molecules produced by Acetobacter xylinum. These aligned long-chain cellulose molecules form subfibrils with a diameter of 2-4 nm, which are further aligned to form nanofibril bundles. The BC film yields a record-high tensile strength (approximate to 1.0 GPa) and toughness (approximate to 25 MJ m(-3)). Being ultrastrong and ultratough, yet the BC film is also highly flexible and can be folded into desirable shapes. The BC film exhibits a controllable manner of alignment and is highly transparent with modulated optical properties, paving the way to enabling new functionalities in mechanical, electrical, fluidic, photonics, and biocompatible applications.

Abstract:Uniaxially aligned cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), which are fabricated by electrospinning of cellulose acetate derived from bamboo cellulose (B-CA) followed by deacetylation, were used as reinforcements to make optically transparent composite films. We examined the effects of B-CA concentration and electrospinning parameters (e.g. spinning distance, and collection speed) on fiber morphology and orientation, which act on mechanical-to-optical properties of the CNFs-reinforced composites. Consequently, the resultant composite film exhibits high visible-light transmittance even with high fiber content, as well as improved mechanical properties. The understanding obtained from this study may facilitate the development of novel nanofibrous materials for various optical uses.

Abstract:Cellulose, as a biomass resource, has attracted increasingly attention and extensive research by virtue of its widely sources, ideal degradability, good mechanical properties and easy modification due to its rich hydroxyl groups. Nevertheless, it is still a challenge to attain high performance cellulose-based composite film materials with diverse functional combinations. In this work, we developed a multifunctional cellulose-based film via a facile impregnation-curing strategy. Here, benzoxazine resin (BR) is used as an optically functional component to endow the microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) film with powerful light management capabilities including UV and blue light double shielding, high transmittance, and high haze. Meanwhile, the introduction of tannic acid (TA) substantially enhanced the mechanical properties of the film, including tensile strength and toughness, by constructing energy-sacrificial bonds. An effective self-healing of the film was achieved by controlling the degree of BR curing. The final films exhibited 98.24 % UV shielding and 89.98 % blue light blocking, good mechanical properties including a tensile strength of 202.21 MPa and tensile strain of 7.1 %, as well as desirable thermal healing properties supported by incompletely cured BR. This work may provide new insights into the high-value utilization of biomass resources.
Cellulose separation from ramie bone by one step process with green hydrogen peroxide-citric acid

Abstract:Ramie bone (RB), an agricultural waste generated in the textile industry, is a vastly productive renewable natural resource with the potential to be used as a source of cellulose. In this study, ramie bone cellulose (RB-CE) was obtained in one step using a simple and ecologically friendly hydrogen peroxide-citric acid (HPCA) treatment procedure that avoided the use of halogenated reagents and strong acids while also streamlining the treatment processes. Various analytical methods were used to investigate the chemical composition and structure, crystallinity, morphology, thermal properties, surface area and hydration properties of cellulose separated at different treatment temperatures. HPCA successfully removed lignin and hemicellulose from RB, according to chemical composition analysis and FTIR. RB-CE had a type I cellulose crystal structure, and the crystallinity improved with increasing treatment temperature, reaching 72.51 % for RB-CE90. The RB-CE showed good thermal stability with degradation temperatures ranging from 294.2 °C to 319.1 °C. Furthermore, RB-CE had a high water/oil binding capacity, with RB-CE90 having WHC and OBC of 9.68 g/g and 7.24 g/g, respectively. The current work serves as a model for the environmentally friendly and convenient extraction of cellulose from biomass, and the cellulose obtained can be employed in the field of food and composite materials.

Abstract:In this study, a strategy was adopted to enhance the use of ramie fibers as raw material for isolation of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). Ramie pulp was produced by alkaline organosolv followed by bleaching. CNFs were produced by mechanical defibrillation, and films were fabricated via casting. Effects of number of passes in the mechanical grinding on physical and mechanical properties of CNF films were comprehensively studied. Potential of ramie fibers was proved by fabricating homogeneous nanofibers with average thickness of 8.72 nm, which led to CNF films with dense and non-porous networks, and crystallinity index of 76-78%. Tensile strength (42-82 MPa) and dynamic mechanical (9-11 GPa) performance were good only for less severe mechanical defibrillation. Lower solubility (1.85-2.43%). and activity (0.69) in water, and outstanding barrier properties against water vapor and oxygen make ramie suitable for more sustainable extraction of cellulose nanofibers and production of CNF films for diverse applications.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) is today’s one of rapidly growing nanocomposite reinforcing materials. This is thanks to some advantages that come with it over anorganic nanocomposite reinforcing materials, for example, nanoclay, nanosilica, nanoalumina, carbon nanotubes, among others. Some of the advantages of NCC are environment-friendliness due to being organic-compound-based, high mechanical property, and easy manufacturing. NCC can be extracted from natural cellulose sources, such as natural fiber, wood, and animals. One of the natural fibers rich in cellulose content, in this case around 80%, is fiber of ramie which is ubiquitous in Indonesia. It is well known that the acid hydrolysis method is an easy route to NCC fabrication. A number of chemical treatments like de-waxing, bleaching, and alkaline treatment are typically performed prior to acid hydrolysis process. The effect of such chemical treatments as precursors of alkaline hydrolysis on ramie fiber characteristics was investigated in this research. Firstly, ramie fiber was cut 1 cm in size, then grinded and sieved. The fiber was then subjected to de-waxing process by adding it into a toluene-ethanol solution (1:2). Then, it was submitted to bleaching with 0.7% sodium chlorite (NaClO2) solution at 75 °C for 1 hour. Lastly, the fiber was subjected to an alkaline treatment in 2% NaOH solution for 2 hours. Characterization with FT-IR, XRD, and TGA of the fiber which had underwent a number of surface treatments was conducted. Results show that the chemical treatments had successfully removed amorphous components like lignin and hemicellulose from the ramie fiber. Chemical treatments were proven able to increase the crystallinity index and thermal stability of ramie fiber.
Self‐Densification of Highly Mesoporous Wood Structure into a Strong and Transparent Film

Abstract:In the native wood cell wall, cellulose microfibrils are highly aligned and organized in the secondary cell wall. A new preparation strategy is developed to achieve individualization of cellulose microfibrils within the wood cell wall structure without introducing mechanical disintegration. The resulting mesoporous wood structure has a high specific surface area of 197 m2 g−1 when prepared by freeze‐drying using liquid nitrogen, and 249 m2 g−1 by supercritical drying. These values are 5 to 7 times higher than conventional delignified wood (36 m2 g−1) dried by supercritical drying. Such highly mesoporous structure with individualized cellulose microfibrils maintaining their natural alignment and organization can be processed into aerogels with high porosity and high compressive strength. In addition, a strong film with a tensile strength of 449.1 ± 21.8 MPa and a Young's modulus of 51.1 ± 5.2 GPa along the fiber direction is obtained simply by air drying owing to the self‐densification of cellulose microfibrils driven by the elastocapillary forces upon water evaporation. The self‐densified film also shows high optical transmittance (80%) and high optical haze (70%) with interesting biaxial light scattering behavior owing to the natural alignment of cellulose microfibrils.

Abstract:Alignment of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in the aqueous phase have been studied in depth. However, there are few reports on the orientation control of CNCs as rod-like nano fillers in epoxy resins. In this research, the rheological behavior of CNCs/epoxy resin system before curing indicating that CNCs in which can be oriented through shear-induced orientation. Based on this point, shear-oriented CNCs reinforced resin composite films were successfully prepared, mechanical properties, optical properties and thermal stability of which were systematically investigated. Firstly, mechanical properties of composite films can be significantly improved by introducing oriented CNCs at all CNC content. And the aspect ratio of oriented CNCs also has an obvious impact on their enhancement effect. Secondly, although their transmittance decreases with the increase of CNC content, it is possible to obtain composite films with a transmittance close to that of pure epoxy resin film by adjusting the preparation process of CNCs. Finally, the thermal stability of oriented CNCs reinforced epoxy resin composite films at low CNC content is improved, but then decreases with the increase of CNC content. The successful preparation of oriented CNCs reinforced epoxy resin composite films with better mechanical and thermal properties while maintaining transparency will be conducive to expanding the applications of epoxy resins reinforced with rod like micro/nano fillers.

Highly efficient dissolution and reinforcement mechanism of robust and transparent cellulose films for smart packaging

Abstract:The packaging of fresh foods increasingly focuses on renewable and eco-friendly cellulose films, but their low dissolution efficiency and weak mechanical strength greatly limit their wide application, which also cannot be used for smart packaging. Here, a highly efficient synergistic chloride-salt dissolution method was proposed to fabricate robust, transparent, and smart cellulose films. Cellulose films with appropriate Ca2+ concentration exhibited robust mechanical strength, better thermal stability, high transparency and crystallinity. The metal chelation of Ca2+ with cellulose chains could induce cellulose chain arrangement during the cellulose regeneration process. Particularly, compared to pure cellulose films, the tensile strength and elongation at break of cellulose films with suitable Ca2+ were increased by 167 % and 200 %, respectively. Moreover, optimal cellulose films can be used to reflect the quality of the fruit by detecting changes in ethanol gas. Hence, a novel strategy is presented to fabricate robust and transparent cellulose films with great potential application for smart packaging.
Strong, Ductile, Transparent, Water-Resistant Cellulose Nanofibril Composite Films via UV-Induced Inter-Cross-Linked Networks

Abstract:Brittleness and high water sensitivity have so far hindered the utilization of cellulose nanofibril (CNF) films in many applications. In this study, strong, ductile, transparent, and water-resistant CNF-based composite films were prepared by incorporating UV-curable glycerol dimethacrylate (GDMA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) into CNFs. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and other test results confirmed the cross-linking between PEO chains, inter-cross-linking between PEO and GDMA, as well as self-polymerization of GDMA after UV irradiation. These reactions had a synergistic effect on the mechanical properties and water resistance of the films, leading to outstanding mechanical properties of the films in both wet and dry states. Specifically, an optimal formulation, CNF/15%GDMA/50%PEO, showed a tensile strength, modulus, and toughness at the wet state of 42.1 MPa, 0.3 GPa, and 3.7 MJ/m3, about 6.6, 4.3, and 11.1 times those of the neat CNF film, respectively. This ternary composite film also exhibited a higher transparency than the neat CNF film with an optical transmittance of ∼84.0% at 550 nm wavelength. The film could be pressed into a double-curved structure without a fracture with moisture plasticization, demonstrating its high ductility and formability. Abstract:There is an increasing interest in substituting petroleum based polymer films, for food packaging applications, with films based on renewable resources. In many of these applications, low oxygen permeability and low moisture uptake of films are required, as well as high enough strength and flexibility. For this purpose, rye arabinoxylan films reinforced with nanofibrillated cellulose was prepared and evaluated. A thorough mixing of the components resulted in uniform films. Mechanical, thermal, structural, moisture sorption and oxygen barrier characteristics of such films are reported here. Reinforcement of arabinoxylan with nanofibrillated cellulose affected the properties of the films positively. A decrease in moisture sorption of the films, as well as an increase in stiffness, strength and flexibility of the films were shown. From these results and dynamic FTIR spectra, a strong coupling between reinforcing cellulose and arabinoxylan matrix was concluded. Oxygen barrier properties were equal or better as compared to the neat rye arabinoxylan film. In general, the high nanofibrillated cellulose containing composite film, i.e. 75 % NFC, showed the best properties.

Abstract:Cellulose possesses numerous favorable peculiarities to replace petroleum-based materials. Nevertheless, the extremely high hygroscopicity of cellulose severely degrades their mechanical performance, which is a major obstacle to the production of high-strength, multi-functional cellulose-based materials. In this work, a simple strategy was proposed to fabricate durable versatile nanocellulose films based on sustaining CO2 capture and in-situ calcification. In this strategy, Ca(OH)2 was in-situ formed on the films by Ca2+ crosslinking and subsequent introduction of OH-, which endowed the films with high mechanical strength and carbon sequestration ability. The following CO2 absorption process continuously improved the water resistance and durability of the films, and enabled them to maintain excellent mechanical properties and promising light management ability. After a 30-day CO2 absorption process, the water contact angle of the films can be increased from 43° to 79°, and the weight gain rate of the films in a 30 h water-absorption process can be sharply decreased from 331.2 % to 52.2 %. The films could maintain a high tensile strength of 340 MPa, and result in a CO2 absorption rate of 3.5 mmol/gcellulose after 30 days. In this study, the improvement of durability and carbon sequestration of nanocellulose films was achieved by a simple and effective method.

Abstract:All-cellulose composite films were prepared, for the first time, from native cellulose nanowhiskers and cellulose matrix regenerated from aqueous NaOH-urea solvent system on the basis of their temperature-dependent solubility. The cellulose whiskers retained their needlelike morphology with mean length and diameter of 300 and 21 nm as well as native crystallinity when added to the latter solution at ambient temperature. The structure and physical properties of the nanocomposite films were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and tensile tests. The composite films were isotropic and transparent to visible light and showed good mechanical properties as a result of the reinforcement by the whiskers. By varying the ratio of the cellulose whiskers to regenerated cellulose matrix (cellulose II), the tensile strength and elastic modulus of the nanocomposite films could be tuned to reach 124 MPa and 5 GPa, respectively. The tensile strength of the nanocomposite films could reach 157 MPa through a simple drawing process, with the calculated Hermans' orientation parameter of 0.30. This work provided a novel pathway for the preparation of biodegradable all-cellulose nanocomposites, which are expected to be useful as biomaterials and food ingredients.

Abstract:In this paper, nano/microfibrils were applied to enhance the mechanical and hydrophobic properties of the sugarcane bagasse fiber films. The successful preparation of nano/microfibrils was confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), fiber length analyzer (FLA), and ion chromatography (IC). The transparency, morphology, mechanical and hydrophobic properties of the cellulose films were evaluated. The results show that the nanoparticle was formed by the hemicellulose diffusing on the surface of the cellulose and agglomerating in the film-forming process at 40 °C. The elastic modulus of the cellulose film was as high as 4140.60 MPa, and the water contact angle was increased to 113°. The micro/nanostructures were formed due to hemicellulose adsorption on nano/microfilament surfaces. The hydrophobicity of the films was improved. The directional crystallization of nano/microfibrous molecules was found. Cellulose films with a high elastic modulus and high elasticity were obtained. It provides theoretical support for the preparation of high-performance cellulose film.
