Abstract:Exhaust gases emitted from mobile and stationary sources contain many kinds of pollutants, such as SO2, NOx, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), etc. These pollutants can be converted to harmless nonpollutants at reasonable temperatures by cost-effective systems using catalysts. Among these, NOx is a major air pollutant in most of the developing countries, such as China and India, etc. NOx emission leads to the acid rain formation, photochemical smog pollution and secondary aerosols. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with ammonia is the most effective method for NOx removal. The main reaction of SCR is NOx reduced by NH3 to N2, and H2O. After introducing SCR reaction and important related details, two critical topics are discussed. One is the environmentally benign catalysts, including the original design strategy and reaction mechanisms. The other is the poisoning mechanism of the catalyst and the corresponding regeneration methods. During the studies outlined in this chapter in situ spectroscopy technology was analyzed and the nanomaterials electronic structure calculations were conducted.
