Abstract:It is essential to avoid deadlock and blockage in the operation of an automated manufacturing system (AMS) since they cripple a part of the system, if not the whole, and then deteriorate system performance. Though a large number of approaches are developed to resolve this issue, few of them are directly applicable to AMSs with failure-prone resources. This study focuses on the supervision for deadlock avoidance and blockage control in a class of AMSs with multiple unreliable resources, where each resource is a workstation. The authors hope that the system, under the control of a supervisor, can at all time automatically continue producing parts whose processing routes do not contain any of the currently failed workstations. Inspired by the widely known Banker's algorithm and a resource order policy, this study presents a robust supervisory controller that satisfies the above desired requirement. All the evidence shows that authors' policy performs better than the original one in terms of permissiveness. Furthermore, an example AMS from existing literature is used to illustrate the effectiveness of authors' proposed method.
Sequence Control of Essential Siphons for Deadlock Prevention in Petri Nets

Abstract:Deadlock prevention is crucial to the modeling of flexible manufacturing systems. In the Petri net framework, deadlock prevention is often addressed by siphon-based control (SC) policies. Recent research results show that SC methods can avoid full siphon enumeration by using mixed integer programming (MIP) to greatly increase the computational efficiency so that it can be applied in large systems in computable time. Besides, maximally permissive control solutions can be obtained by means of iterative siphon control (ISC) approaches and MIP. Then the remaining problems are redundancy and MIP iterations. Redundant controllers make the closed-loop system more complicated and each MIP iteration increases the total computational time. This article proposes a revised ISC deadlock prevention policy which can achieve better results than the other reported methods in terms of redundancy and MIP iterations while maintaining the maximal permissiveness. Several benchmark examples are provided to illustrate the proposed approach and to be compared with the other reported methods.

Abstract:In automated container terminals (ACTs), quay cranes (QCs), automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and automated yard cranes (AYCs) interact intensively to handle containers at seaside and yard side. This work investigates interacting equipment in ACTs that employ AGVs with the capability of lifting a container temporarily buffered at the transfer area in front of a storage block. By establishing and using the Petri net model of equipment interaction system (EIS) for container transportation, deadlock control problem is studied for handling operations in ACTs, where all QCs, AYCs, and transport vehicles are considered as system resources. Deadlock is characterized as maximal special circuits (MSCs) that are saturated at a system state. After a deadlock detection method through MSC enumeration in the system Petri net model is developed, a procedure is proposed to resolve deadlock situations where an AYC is involved in the corresponding circular waiting relations. By modifying the operation sequence of AYCs, the procedure can resolve the conflicts among concurrent processes so as to eliminate deadlocks. Examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the deadlock handling method, which is also tested in a simulation study. Results show that the EIS can recover from detected deadlocks involving AYCs to ensure smooth transport operations of container jobs.

Abstract:Deadlock control problem of flexible manufacturing systems is addressed based on Petri net models. The concept of siphon basis has been proposed to obtain a Petri net controller with small size in our previous work. Siphon basis is a set of strict minimal siphons satisfying some specific conditions. However, it is verified that the performances of controlled Petri nets based on different siphon basis are different in this paper. As is well known, behavior permissiveness is one of the most important criteria in evaluating the performance of controlled Petri nets. It is significant to address how to select siphon basis to improve the performance of controlled Petri nets. The condition under which the performance of Petri net controllers can be largely improved is explored. Based on the condition, an efficient deadlock control policy for flexible manufacturing systems is established. Finally, two examples are provided to demonstrate the proposed condition and policy.

Abstract:A quite great progress of the supervisory control theory for discrete event systems (DES) has been made in the past nearly twenty years, and now, automata, formal language and Petri nets become the main research tools. This paper focus on the Petri nets based supervisory control theory of DES. Firstly, we review the research results in this field, and claim that there generally exists a problem in Petri nets based supervisory control theory of DES, that is, the deadlock caused by the controller introduced to enforce the given specification occurs in the closed-loop systems, especially the deadlock occurs in the closed-loop system in which the original plant is live. Finally, a possible research direction is presented for the solution of this problem.

Abstract:The issue of supervisory control of discrete event systems (DES) based on Petri nets (PN) has been investigated by using various methods. However, there exists a problem that the supervisor, introduced to enforce the given specification, causes a deadlock in the closed-loop system, especially when the deadlock occurs in the closed-loop system in which the original plant model is live. To address this problem, we propose a hybrid approach to design a deadlock-free PN controller for DES with given specification. The approach mainly consists of two stages. Firstly, a supervisor is designed to enforce the given specification using the reported place invariants method. Then, we regard the obtained closed-loop system with deadlock introduced by the supervisor as a new plant net and adopt the theory of regions to design a deadlock-free PN controller. The controller designed by our approach is guaranteed to be maximally permissive when the original plant PN is fully controllable and observable. Even for partially controllable and observable plant PN, it is possible to obtain a suboptimal solution.

Abstract:Deadlock detection and resolution is a quite important problem in distributed systems. But now all of the deadlock detection algorithms can cause false deadlock. It is necessary to reduce the false deadlock rate to improve the performance of the algorithms. This paper focuses on the research of the false deadlock. We analyze the factors af- fecting the false deadlock rate, and propose two improvements to reduce the false deadlock rate. To verify our ideas, simulation experiments are used,and the result is quite satisfied.

Abstract:Component-based development has gained a lot of attention in recent years. As a software development paradigm, it enhances reusability and reduces complexity but it also brings new challenges in reliability, especially the deadlock problem. In this paper, we present a dynamic probe (DP) strategy for the deadlock problem of component-based systems (CBS). First a formal semantic model is proposed to abstract the interaction among the components for analyzing the deadlock connections, and then the dynamic probe detection (DPD) algorithm is used to detect the deadlock loops. If deadlock connections are detected then the dynamic probe elimination (DPE) algorithm is used to evaluate the component reliability using several measurement indexes to find a component with reliability lower than the other components, and then replace it. Last, in comparison to related work, the results show that the proposed strategy can achieve both lower processing cost and higher reliability.

Abstract:This paper introduces a method to detect operating system deadlock.The method consists of three stages:(1) finding the lock-holders by detecting whether the locks and unlocks are paired.(2) finding the lock-waiters by filtering the abnormal process.(3) the method will occur deadlock warning if there is a cycle in the waits-for graph.The results show that the method has only 1% influence to the performance,and does not need to modify Linux kernel and detected program source code.

Abstract:Previous proposals of distributed deadlock detection algorithms remain the disadvantages of high overhead and un-concurrency.This paper proposes an efficient ``edge chasing'' algorithm to eliminate these problems,in where probes are created and propagated by both transaction and data sites.The proposed algorithm neither keeps temporary detection states nor resends resource requests for a transaction,so it speeds up the deadlock detection process,decreases the detection overhead and executes concurrently.The solution is proved correctness,performance simulation shows its detection overhead and timing are better than existing algorithms.

Abstract:Modern model checking techniques concentrate on global properties of verified systems, because the methods base on global state space. Local features like partial deadlock or process termination are not easy to express and check. In the paper a description of distributed system in an Integrated Model of Distributed Systems (IMDS) combined with model checking is presented. IMDS expresses a dualism in distributed systems: server view and agent view. The formalism uses server states and messages. A progress in computations is defined in terms of actions consuming and producing states and messages. Distributed actions are totally independent and they do not depend on global state. Therefore, IMDS allows the designer to express local features of subsystems. In this model it is easy to describe various kinds of deadlock (including partial deadlock) and to differentiate deadlock from termination. The integration of IMDS with model checking is presented. Temporal formulas testing various kinds of deadlock (in communication or over resources) and termination are proposed.

A Semi-centralized Algorithm to Detect and Resolve Distributed Deadlocks in the Generalized Model

Abstract:To detect and resolve distributed deadlocks in the generalized model, a few algorithms have been proposed. Most of them are distributed algorithms which are based on the diffusing computation technique where propagation of probes and backward propagation of replies are required. On the contrary, centralized algorithms send the dependency information directly to the initiator. However, existing algorithms do not distinguish local deadlocks from global deadlocks. In this paper, we present a semi-centralized algorithm which effectively detects and resolves local deadlocks prior to global deadlocks. To be specific, a consistent snapshot of dependency information of involved nodes is recorded in an information table at each site. Therefore, the detection and resolution of local deadlocks can be performed at each site before the dependency information is sent to the initiator to further detect global deadlocks. The proposed algorithm also handles the problem of phantom edges and concurrent executions. Performance analysis shows that the performance of our algorithm is close to or better than that of the existing algorithms in terms of execution time, message traffic and message size.

Besides single unit resource allocation systems(SU-RAS), multicapacity resource systems, flexible routing systems and multiple resource acquisition systems have been thoroughly studied. This paper provides a simple framework employing symbolic model checking to deal with the problem. Furthermore, deadlock avoidance in systems with unreliable resources is briefly discussed.

Abstract:A novel framework, called MAEDD (Mobile Agent Enabled Deadlock Detection), for distributed deadlock detection using mobile agents is proposed. In MAEDD, mobile agents are dispatched to collect and analyze deadlock information distributed over the network sites, detect deadlock cycles in the system, and then resolve the deadlocks. A prototype implementing the proposed framework is developed using IBM's Aglets. The performance of our mobile agent enabled approach is evaluated against traditional message-passing based solutions. Preliminary performance evaluation results indicate that MAEDD can detect deadlock faster than massage-passing solutions, with increased network traffic.

Abstract:Database Security and Protection System (DSPS) is a security platform for fighting malicious DBMS. The security and performance are critical to DSPS. The authors suggested a key management scheme by combining the server group structure to improve availability and the key distribution structure needed by proactive security. This paper detailed the implementation of proactive security in DSPS. After thorough performance analysis, the authors concluded that the performance difference between the replicated mechanism and proactive mechanism becomes smaller and smaller with increasing number of concurrent connections; and that proactive security is very useful and practical for large, critical applications.

Abstract:Deadlock detection and resolution in distributed systems have been studied extensively, and many effective algorithms are proposed. However, traditional algorithms are not suited in the environment in which the clients and re- sources may move freely. This paper presents a new mobile agent based algorithm, Agent Guard, for deadlock detec- tion and resolution in distributed systems. A mobile agent visits the sites in the distributed system according to some special itinerary algorithm. While moving in the system, the mobile agent collects resource allocation information, ana- lyzes it and resolves deadlocks when deadlock cycles are formed. As the simulation showed, the algorithm can achieve shorter deadlock duration and smaller phantom deadlock ratio; the network communication load is decreased, too.
