Abstract:Common biphase pulse compression techniques were not very robustness against Doppler distortions, and the peak signal-to-noise ratio of these methods was not very high. Kwan and Lee (1993) presented a pulse compression approach by using a neural network. A 40 dB peak signal-to-noise ratio can be achieved. Based on Kwan and Lee's method, we present an improved BP (backpropagation) algorithm. The robustness against Doppler distortions and the output peak signal-to-noise ratio of the improved algorithm are examined. The improved method get a 50 dB output peak signal-to-noise ratio, about 10 dB higher than Kwan and Lee's method. The improved method also has a better Doppler resistance ability.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a pulse compressor implementation with DSP for small time-bandwidth (TB) product linear frequency modulation (LFM) waveform. It contains the digital generation of the LFM waveform and the digital internally Hamming weighted compression filter. Two methods for suppression of time sidelobe of the digital pulse compressor are employed. First, the LFM waveform is modified using cubic phase predistortion for reducting the effect of Fresnel ripples in small TB product LFM waveform. Secondly, anti-aliasing filter is used before A/D converter for reducting spectrum skirt level of the returned LFM waveform. The parameters of the compression filter implemented with IMSA100 DSP are programmable. The experiments show that the peak time sidelobe level of the digital pulse compressor is not larger than -32 dB for TB product of 20

Abstract:One-bit radar, performing signal sampling and quantization by a 1-bit analog-to-digital converter, is a promising technology for many civilian applications due to its low-cost and low-power consumptions. In this article, problems encountered by a 1-bit linear-frequency-modulated continuous-wave (LFMCW) radar are studied, and a two-stage target detection method termed as the dimension-reduced generalized approximate message passing (DR-GAMP) approach is proposed. First, the spectrum of 1-bit quantized signals in a scenario with multiple targets is analyzed. It is indicated that high-order harmonics may result in false alarms and cannot be neglected. Second, based on the spectrum analysis, the DR-GAMP approach is proposed to carry out target detection. Specifically, linear preprocessing methods and target predetection are first adopted to perform the dimension reduction, and then, the generalized approximate message passing algorithm is utilized to suppress high-order harmonics and recover true targets. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the 1-bit LFMCW radar under typical parameters. It is shown that compared to the conventional radar applying linear processing methods, the 1-bit LFMCW radar has about 1.3-dB performance gain when the input signal-to-noise ratios of targets are low. In the presence of a strong target, it has about 1.0-dB performance loss.

Abstract:The invention discloses a method of reducing the data transmission throughput of an FMCW (linear frequency modulated continuous wave) radar system. According to targets in the detection range of the radar system, the change distance of each target is limited within the preset small time window interval, the feature of spatial locality exists, each target corresponds to a distance dimension FFT, namely, 1st FFT, and the corresponding target frequency value on a frequency spectrum has invariance. According to the distribution condition of the concerned object targets in the 1st FFT, digital down-conversion processing of each frequency spectrum sub-band is carried out, namely, digital domain NCO shifting is carried out on the ADC (analog-to-digital converter) output, anti-aliasing filtering processing is carried out, then the corresponding multiple extraction output is carried out, and therefore the effect of reducing the data transmission throughput of the whole radar system is achieved.

Abstract:To solve the conflict between the radar range and distance resolution effectively, this paper design and realize a method of pulse compression of radar system. Firstly, the paper describes the working principle of pulse compression. Then a method of pulse compression simulation is designed based on chirp signal and frequency domain filtering design. And the softwares of Matlab and Modelsim are used to the simulation of this method. Finally, the design is downloaded to the chip of Field Programming Gate Array and realizes the pulse compression of chirp signal. The experimental results show that the method described in this article realizes the pulse compression of radar system and has certain feasibility and practicability.

Abstract:The paper presents a digital pulse compression approach for high frequency (HF) chirp radar. The emphasis is to accomplish echo signal de-chirp operation by modified orthogonal transformation on field programmable gates array (FPGA) chip. This approach has been developed for an all-digital receiver platform which is directly radio frequency (RF) band-pass sampling, compared with the traditional analog receiver or intermediate frequency (IF) receiver, it has an easy hardware structure closing to a "soft" radar mode. The system closed-loop test shows the correctness and rationality of the design, meeting the demand of engineering application.

Abstract:Flicker noise and dc offset have strong impacts on the performance of zero-IF receivers. In this paper, we propose a generalized approach to eliminate such impacts on zero-IF architecture pulse compression radars (PCRs). The conventional low-pass filter in a zero-IF receiver is replaced with a predefined filter (PDF) to filter out the dc and low-frequency components from the demodulated radar signal. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that, based on the prior knowledge of the radar signal and the PDF, the performance degradation, due to the complete filtering of the low-frequency components, can be recovered through a newly deduced compensation equation. Our approach can be widely used in the implementation of highly integrated high-performance PCR systems in the future.

Abstract:For the speciality of detecting targets, two problems have to be resolved if pulse compression is applied in meteorological radar. The first is the high sidelobe, the second is the big calculated amount. Combining two super- low algorithms algorithms, by de- signing the platform with the TS201’s parallel processing, this paper makes the super- low sidelobe pulse compression. The system structure and parallel processing are particularly descried in this paper and the final testing results indicate the super- low sidelobe is achieved.

Abstract:High-resolution radar imaging system is widely used in both military and civil fields.Wide-band radar signals are necessary in high-resolution radar imaging,while these signals introduce high-sampling rate,high-transmission rate,large data storage and high difficulties to real time signal processing in radar system.These problems are resulted from Nyquist sampling theorem which requires the sampling rate to be more than two times of the bandwidth of the signal.As a consequence,searching for new signal processing and data acquisition methods is in urgent requirement.When dealing with some signals with the property of sparsity,the theory of compressed sensing which is different from the Nyquist sampling theorem,gets a group of numerical values through noncorrelation-measurement and the number of these measurements is much less than that of points sampled according to Nyquist sampling theorem.Then,we can reconstruct original-signal accurately by reconstruction-algorithms.The premise of using the theory of compressed sensing is the signal’s sparse property and the key to the theorem is the relationship between the measurement matrix and sparse degree.Meanwhile,the important support is the reconstruction algorithm.As we all know,response function of radar observations of the scene is usually sparse and this property leads to the sparsity of wide-band radar echo in some form.Based on this property,the application of the theory of compressed sensing in radar signal processing becomes possible.In this paper,the principle of signal sampling and reconstructing according to the theory of compressed sensing has been introduced briefly and a sparse matrix structure scheme for linear frequency modulation signal(LFM)commonly used in radar is proposed with the help of the emission signal.At the same time,the LFM signal model is structured with the help of MATLAB.Then,the processes of sampling and reconstruction of LFM and 2D imaging with the theory of compressed sensing are also simulated.Besides,this paper also studied the different reconstruction algorithms and makes the algorithm effectiveness comparison.The results show that during the process of broadband radar echo signal processing,the theory of compressed sensing can effectively relieve the pressure on the echo data storage and transmission through reducing sampling rate.This advantage can be widely used in wide-band radar target detection.

Abstract:Conventional radar transmits electromagnetic waves towards the targets of interest. In between the outgoing pulses, the radar measures the signal reflected from the targets to determine their presence, range, velocity and other characteristics. Radar systems face multiple challenges, generating many trade-offs such as bandwidth versus range resolution and dwell time versus Doppler resolution. In MIMO radar, high resolution requires a large aperture and high number of antennas, increasing hardware and processing requirements. Recently, novel approaches in sampling theory and radar signal processing have been proposed to allow target detection and parameter recovery from samples obtained below the Nyquist rate. These techniques exploit the sparsity of the target scene in order to reduce the required number of samples, pulses and antennas, breaking the link between bandwidth, dwell time and number of antennas on the one hand and range, Doppler and azimuth resolution, respectively, on the other. This review introduces this so-called sub-Nyquist radar paradigm and describes the corresponding sampling and recovery algorithms, that leverage compressed sensing techniques to perform time and spatial compression. We focus on non radar imaging applications and survey many recent compressed radar systems. Our goal is to review the main impacts of compressed radar on parameter resolution as well as digital and analog complexity. The survey includes fast and slow time compression schemes as well as spatial compression approaches. We show that beyond substantial rate reduction, compression may also enable communication and radar spectrum sharing. Throughout the paper, we consider both theoretical and practical aspects of compressed radar, and present hardware prototype implementations, demonstrating real-time target parameter recovery from low rate samples in pulse-Doppler and MIMO radars.

Abstract:Higher performance is required for a receiver of modern radar system. Digital receiver technology is an effective implementation method of high accuracy and wide band radar receiving systems. The theory and technology of digital receiver are introduced in this paper. The digital down conversion,Number Controlled Oscillator (NCO),Cascade integrator comb (CIC) filter and decimation are discussed. An example for implementing a digital receiver based on FPGA is presented. The analysis and simulation are made and the test results are provided.

Abstract:Modern sensor networksthose used for autonomous driving, security systems, human motion tracking, or smart citysmart factory applicationsare shifting to a more centralized data processing approach to enable efficient multimodal sensor fusion for optimal environment perception in complex dynamic situations. Among lidars and cameras, radars are typical for these applications, but they generate huge amounts of data, which cannot be transmitted or stored effectively in current setups. Consequently, manufacturers usually have to process the data on sensor. This results in transmitting only a few extracted features as point clouds or object lists to a central processing unit, which usually causes a significant loss of information. With this approach, advanced processingsuch as enhancement of resolution by coherent combination of sensors or ghost target removal with advanced algorithmsis hardly possible. To overcome this, we suggest an alternative method by using signal-based compression with defined losses. The following topology will be proposed: the sensors encode raw data without prior radar-specific processing and after transmission, a central unit decodes and processes the radar data, thus benefiting from its more powerful heterogeneous processing system. We will analyze lossless compression algorithms with rate savings of about 30 to 65, but the focus is on lossy compression algorithms that incorporate higher compression ratios by allowing negligible errors. It is shown that state-of-the-art multimedia compression algorithms can obtain rate savings of 99, and radar specific algorithms can add a 50-fold gain on top, reaching 99.98. To assess the distortions of compressed data, we then present different radar-specific evaluation metrics.

Abstract:The pulse laser range?finding and phase laser range?finding are the main methods of laser range?finding presently, but they may lose efficiency easily in complex noise environment due to oblivion of echo signal covered in the noise. Since the weak echo signal is difficult to extract,the pulse compression laser range?finding method is proposed. The pulse laser of linear frequency modulation is emitted,and received with pulse compression technology to increase the pulse peak power,improve the signal?to?noise ratio,and obtain the echo signal covered in noise. The method has important research significance and application value to improve the range?finding distance and reduce the laser power. The mathematical model of pulse compression method in laser range?finding was established. The typical Gaussian white noise environment was simulated. The influence of pulse compres?sion parameters on the laser range?finding is analyzed. The laser signal source of linear frequency modulation was designed,and the pulse compression signal processing was realized based on FPGA.

Abstract:We demonstrate that 80 radar pulses within 100 μs, overlapping in temporal and ranging from 500 MHz to 5GHz which covers the UHF band, L band, S band and part of C band, are acquired by an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with 520MHz bandwidth based on photonic compressive sampling (CS). In the experiment, maximum detection error of 100 KHz is achieved by testing a traditional rectangular pulse and a linear frequency modulated pulse respectively. The overlapping pulse trains are recovered faithfully and an exact waterfall diagram of the recovered signal is obtained, indicating that photonic compressive sampling technique is appealing in the field of radar detection.
A Statistical Framework and Analysis for Perfect Radar Pulse Compression

Abstract:Perfect radar pulse compression coding is a potential emerging field which aims at providing rigorous analysis and fundamental limit radar experiments. It is based on finding non-trivial pulse codes, which we can make statistically equivalent, to the radar experiments carried out with elementary pulses of some shape. A common engineering-based radar experiment design, regarding pulse-compression, often omits the rigorous theory and mathematical limitations. In this work our aim is to develop a mathematical theory which coincides with understanding the radar experiment in terms of the theory of comparison of statistical experiments. We review and generalize some properties of the Itô measure. We estimate the unknown i.e. the structure function in the context of Bayesian statistical inverse problems. We study the posterior for generalized $d$-dimensional inverse problems, where we consider both real-valued and complex-valued inputs for posteriori analysis. Finally this is then extended to the infinite dimensional setting, where our analysis suggests the underlying posterior is non-Gaussian.

Abstract:In order to probe into the data acquisition method of radar echo navigation information technology, the radar unit constitution, the compression principle of sampling data of Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) algorithm and two common compression algorithms are introduced. The influence of network transmission speed on radar echo data acquisition in VxWorks system is also studied. The flow chart of the compression implementation and the network transmission speed comparison diagram are analyzed. The experimental results show that the LZW compression algorithm can achieve a satisfactory compression rate when the radar echo navigation data acquisition is carried out. At the same time, users can use the memory file in VxWorks to read and write, which can speed up the network transmission. Based on the above finding, it is concluded that the data acquisition and research based on radar echo navigation information technology can speed up the network transmission by using the VxWorks system.

Abstract:We present a photonic-assisted compressive sampling (CS) system which can acquire about 10(6) radar pulses per second spanning from 500 MHz to 5 GHz with a 520-MHz analog-to-digital converter (ADC). A rectangular pulse, a linear frequency modulated (LFM) pulse and a pulse stream is respectively reconstructed faithfully through this system with a sliding window-based recovery algorithm, demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed photonic-assisted CS system in spectral estimation for radar pulses.
