Abstract:A hybrid Artificial Life (ALife) system for function optimization that combines ALife colonization with Genetic Algorithm (GA) includes two stages: in the first stage, the emergent colonization of ALife system is used to provide an initial population for GA; GA is further used to rind the optimal solution in the second stage. However, the optimization result is largely affected by the method of how to select the initial population for GA of the second stage from ALife colony of the first stage. In this paper, different selecting methods are compared with and an effective selecting method is proposed, followed by simulation results.

Abstract:Abstract Nowadays, interdisciplinary fields between Artificial Life, artificial intelligence, computational biology, and synthetic biology are increasingly emerging into public view. It is necessary to reconsider the relations between the material body, identity, the natural world, and the concept of life. Art is known to pave the way to exploring and conveying new possibilities. This survey provides a literature review on recent works of Artificial Life in visual art during the past 40 years, specifically in the computational and software domain. Having proposed a set of criteria and a taxonomy, we briefly analyze representative artworks of different categories. We aim to provide a systematic overview of how artists are understanding nature and creating new life with modern technology.

Abstract:Swarm intelligence and artificial life have been developed rapidly in the last decade. As two artificial intelligence patterns, they open out the living phenomena and evolutive rules in different hierarchies by simulating natural living phenomena, and provide a new kind of thought for complicated behaviors modeling and simulation. The origin and development of swarm intelligence and artificial life are reviewed in this paper. Abstract:Reproduction, development, and individual interactions are essential topics in artificial life. The cellular automata, which can handle these in a composite way, is highly restricted in its form and behavior because it represents life as a pattern of cells. In contrast, the virtual creatures proposed by Karl Sims have a very high degree of freedom in terms of morphology and behavior. However, they have limited expressive capacity in terms of those viewpoints. This study carefully extracts the characteristics of the cellular automata and Sims models to propose a new artificial life model that can simulate reproduction, development, and individual interactions while exhibiting high expressive power for morphology and behavior. The simulation was performed by sequentially reading a book with genetic information and repeatedly executing four actions: expansion, connection, disconnection, and transition. The virtual creatures in the proposed model exhibit unique survival strategies and lifestyles and acquire interesting properties in reproduction, development, and individual interactions while having freedom in morphology and behavior.

Abstract:The effectiveness of path planning and path replanning for intelligent robot using improved ant colony algorithm is explored in this paper. For the purpose of avoiding falling into local optimum and preventing iterative stagnant, this paper describes a new algorithm named stochastic self-adaptive ant colony algorithm to improve the basic ant colony algorithm. Based on the improved ant colony algorithm, the approaches of path planning and path replanning are presented in this paper. Aiming at improving the speed of the algorithm and simplifying the objective function of traditional path planning, this paper presents a principle of eliminating the path nodes .Finally, some constrast emulators are designed.The simulation results proves that the improved ant colony algorithm has strong adaptability in intelligent robots path path planning and replanning.

Abstract:Nature and life include many mysterious events, behaviors and format within themselves. There is harmony between the environmental conditions, behavior and forms of all living organism. Computer science, especially data and information science, is based on the structure or behavior of living things in the creation of many artificial intelligence algorithms by examining this attitude of life. The rapid progress of the developing artificial intelligence and information technology has increased the data and hidden data in our lives many times and has tried to solve (1). Artificial intelligence has examined many areas or environments and has developed approaches based on it. Expert systems, artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms, inductive learning, explanation based learning, similarity based learning, common sense information processing, database based reasoning, model based reasoning, rational protection mechanism, distributed artificial intelligence, natural language processing, chaos theory, logic programming are the artificial intelligence algorithms used for these approaches (2). Among artificial intelligence algorithms; The ant colony algorithm imitates the behavior and direction of ants, and artificial neural networks imitates the behavior and functions of neurons in the nervous system and genetic algorithms imitates the theoretical form of genetic science (3, 4). Many algorithms such as these algorithms are based on the vital form and behavior of living things. The purpose of this review is the relations between the mentioned algorithms and the living science are examined.

Abstract:An optimization algorithm based on artificial life algorithm and particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed. The optimization includes two stages. In the first stage, artificial life system is created. As artificial life organisms have a sensing system, they can find the resource they want and metabolize it. The micro-interaction with each other in the artificial life's group results in emergent colonization in the whole system. The emergent colonization of artificial life system is used to provide an excellent initial position for PSO, and PSO is further used to find the optimal solution in the second stage. Compared with ordinary artificial life based optimization approach and ordinary PSO approach by simulation, in the newly designed method, the performances of searching speed and optimization solution accuracy are improved.

Abstract:Artificial bee colony algorithm (ABC) is a novel biological heuristic optimization paradigm inspired by the honeybee foraging behaviors. And it has received a surge of attention due to its merits of a simplified model, fewer control parameters, and strong robustness. This paper firstly introduces the basic biological principles and mathematical operators of ABC, and then comprehensively presents and analyzes the recent significant research on ABC with aspects of algorithm improvements and engineering applications. Specifically, several representative improvement models and strategies are summarized, and its extended versions including discrete ABC and multi-objective ABC are introduced in detail. Furthermore, its typical applications on neural network training, wireless network, image processing, wireless network, and scheduling are summarized. Finally, we propose our views about the challenges and further research highlights of ABC.

Abstract:Abstract Even when concepts similar to emergence have been used since antiquity, we lack an agreed definition. However, emergence has been identified as one of the main features of complex systems. Most would agree on the statement “life is complex.” Thus understanding emergence and complexity should benefit the study of living systems. It can be said that life emerges from the interactions of complex molecules. But how useful is this to understanding living systems? Artificial Life (ALife) has been developed in recent decades to study life using a synthetic approach: Build it to understand it. ALife systems are not so complex, be they soft (simulations), hard (robots), or wet(protocells). Thus, we can aim at first understanding emergence in ALife, to then use this knowledge in biology. I argue that to understand emergence and life, it becomes useful to use information as a framework. In a general sense, I define emergence as information that is not present at one scale but present at another. This perspective avoids problems of studying emergence from a materialist framework and can also be useful in the study of self-organization and complexity.

Abstract:There has been on-going philosophical debate on whether artificial life models, also known as digital organisms, are truly alive. The main difficulty appears to be finding an encompassing and definite definition of life. By examining similarities and differences in recent definitions of life, we define life as "any system with a boundary to confine the system within a definite volume and protect the system from external effects, consisting of a program that is capable of improvisation, able to react and adapt to the environment, able to regenerate parts of it-self or its entirety, with energy system comprises of non-interference sets of secluded reactions for self-sustenance, is considered alive or a living system. Any incomplete system containing a program and can be re-assembled into a living system; thereby, converting the reassembled system for the purpose of the incomplete system, are also considered alive." Using this definition, we argue that digital organisms may not be the boundary case of life even though some digital organisms are not considered alive; thereby, taking the view that some form of digital organisms can be considered alive. In addition, we present an experimental framework based on continuity of the overall system and potential discontinuity of elements within the system for testing future definitions of life.
