Abstract:Background: Mixed depression, i.e. depression plus co-ocurring hypomanic symptoms. Previous reports have shown a close coorelation between suicide ideation and mixed depression. The study aim was to explore the depressive mixed slate Of fenders with major depressive disorder violent of (MDD), and further to examine the relationship between depressive mixed state and violent behaviors.Methods: 38 violent offenders with MDD and 105 non-violent patients with MDD were recruited All subjects were retrospectively diagnosed according to DSM-IV Mixed depression was defined as a major depressive episode plus three or more concurrent hypomainc symptoms, according to the definition proposed by Akiskal and Benazzi (2003).Results: Current mixed depression was present in 16[hjj1] among the 38 violent offenders. Of all hypomanic symptoms, Psychomotor agitation was present in more than 70%, Irritability was 60.5% of the same sample, The rate of mixed depression was significantly higher among violent than non-violent subjects with major depression episode(42.1% vs 29.5%).Limitation: The original data written down before maybe did not emphasized the symptom of hypomania of offenders or patients with MDD enough.Conclusions: The important new finding of this study is the high prevalence of mixed depression among violent offenders with MDD. And the violent behaviours is closely related to Psychomotor agitation and Irritability.
