Abstract:The emergence of self-centering technology enabled steel structures to be designed with upgraded seismic performance objectives. Post-tensioned (PT) steel connections and frames were proposed as an initial attempt to achieve self-centering structural response; however, the gap opening mechanism causes frame expansion (also known as beam growth) of the self-centering MRFs and raises an incompatibility issue between the gravity frames (including the floor diaphragm) and the MRFs. This paper seeks to propose an alternative type of self-centering connection which is safe, compact, easy to install, and induces no frame expansion. The key component for the connection is a novel superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) ring spring damper which is used to provide moment resistance, self-centering ability, and energy dissipation. The damper is located underneath the bottom flange of the beam, and the connection only rotates about its top flange. A proof-of-concept self-centering connection specimen equipped with the SMA ring spring damper is physically tested, where satisfactory energy dissipation and self-centering capability are observed. Based on the test results, some preliminary design comments are made for such connections.
