Abstract:A real-time structural damage alarming technique based on wavelet packet analysis is discussed in this paper. The premise of the technique is that tiny damage (e. g. cracks) in a structure will result in energy variations of structural dynamic responses decomposed by wavelet packet analysis. Such tiny structural damages, although they are not sensitive to the existing methods such as modal frequency approach, are often discernible from wavelet packet analysis. However, numerical analysis reveals that this method cannot be applied directly in real-time structural damage alarming due to the randomicity and uncertainty of the environmental vibration signals, which may make energy variations caused by structural damage difficult to be detected owing to the energy variations caused by environmental signals. The two-stage damage alarming technique is put forward to solve the problem. The wavelet energy spectrums of vibration response signals are firstly obtained by wavelet packet decomposition. Then the variation index and maximum index of energy spectrum based on Monte-Carlo method are presented to judge the occurrence of structural damage. The viability of this new technique is demonstrated with numerically simulated deflection response of a uniform beam containing a short transverse crack under white noise loading conditions. In the example, the deflection response is analyzed with the wavelet packet decomposition. The results obtained in this study show that a short crack can be detected effectively and efficiently. This technique may serve the purpose of real-time damage alarming for structural health monitoring.
