Abstract:Phytochemical investigation of the fruits of Daucus carota L. resulted in the isolation of a new sesquiterpene named as daucucarotol (1). Its structure was elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR experiments, coupled with MS studies. To our knowledge, compound 1 is the first example for a natural eudesmane sesquiterpene with a hydroxymethyl group located at a methine carbon rather than a usual quaternary carbon in the two fused six-membered ringsystems.

Abstract:The aerial parts of Artemisia mongolica afforded the eudesmane derivative ludovicin B, two coumarins, umbelliferone and esculetin, two methoxylated flavones, eupatilin and pectolinarigenin, as well as a new eudesmane sesquiterpene, 6alpha,8alpha-dihydroxyisocostic acid methyl ester. Structures were elucidated by highfield 1D and 2D NMR techniques.

Abstract:Four new eudesmanolides were isolated from the whole plant of Sonchus transcaspicus and their structures were elucidated by means of spectroscopic methods, including 2D-NMR (1H-1H COSY, HMQC, HMBC and NOESY) and NOEDS (NOE difference spectra) as 1beta-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-5alpha,6beta H-eudesma-3-en-12,6alpha-olide (1), 1beta-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-15-O-( p-hydroxyphenylacetyl)-5alpha,6beta H-eudesma-3,11(13)-dien-12,6alpha-olide (2), 1beta-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(6'-O-p-hydroxyphenyl acetate)-15-O-(p-hydroxyphenylacetyl)-5alpha,6beta H-eudesma-3,11(13)-dien-12,6alpha-olide (3) and 1beta-hydroxy-15-O-(p-methoxyphenylacetyl)-5alpha,6beta H-eudesma-3,11(13)-dien-12,6alpha-olide (4). Compounds 1, 2 and 3 showed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus cells. Compounds 2 and 3 were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxic activity against cultured SMMC-7721 (human hepatoma), HELA (human cervical carcinoma) and B-16 (murine melanoma) cells. The IC50 values for 2 were 108.0, 161.1 and 203.0 microM and those for 3 were 74.1, 117.3 and 135.0 microM, respectively. The structure-activity relationship is discussed.

Abstract:Four new eremophilanoid sesquiterpenes were isolated from Senecio oldhamianus. On the basis of spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction analysis, their structures were elucidated as: 7β, 11-epoxy-9α, 10α-epoxy-8-oxoeremophilane (1), 8,11-dioxol-6-en-9α, 10α-epoxy-8β-hydroxyeremophilane (2) , 7(11)-en-9α, 10α-epoxy-8-oxoeremophilane (3), 6-en-9α, 10α-epoxy-11-hydroxy-8-oxoeremophilane (4). The experiment of anticancer activity reveals that compound 1 promoted, while compound 2 and 3 inhibited , the growth of human hepatoma cells (SMMC-7721) and human ovarioncus cells (HO-8910).

Abstract:A new sesquiterpenoid, 1α,3α-dihydroxy-5,7,8,11αH-eudesm-4(15)-en-8β,12-olide (1), together with three known compounds, granilin (2), β-sitosterol (3), and β-daucosterol (4), was isolated from the ethanol extract of the flower buds of Carpesium triste. Their structures were elucidated by analysis of spectroscopic data, especially13C NMR and 1D NOE spectra.

Abstract:A new furanoeremophilanen derivative, 6-oxo-9 alpha-angloyloxy-10 beta H-furanoeremophilane (1) was isolated from the aerial parts of Senecio dianthus, together with a known compound, spiroeuryolide 2. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis, including HR-ESI-MS, ID and 2D NMR experiments. Compound 2 was isolated from the plant for the first time. Complete H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectral assignments of 2 were leading to revision of some C-13 NMR assignments previously made for this compound.

Abstract:Four new and five known eudesmane-type sesquiterpenes were isolated from the aerial parts of Erigeron annus. The structures of these new compounds were elucidated by spectral means, including 2D-NMR analysis, to be 1 beta,4 beta-dihydroxyeudesman-11-ene; 1 beta,7 alpha-dihydroxyeudesman-4(15)-ene; (1 R,5 S,6 S,7 S,10 R)-1 beta, 6 alpha-dihydroxyeudesman-4-one and 1 beta- D-glucopyranosyloxy-6 alpha-hydroxyeudesman-4(15)-ene. In addition, a chemical transformation of a known compound 1 beta,6 alpha-dihydroxy-eudesman-4 (15)-ene was carried out and the derivative 1beta,6alpha-dihydroxy-4beta(15)-epoxyeudesmane was obtained. Some of the compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antitumor activities.

Abstract:From the whole plant of Senecio tsoongianus, two pairs of epimers, tsoongianolides A (1) and B (2), and tsoongianolides C (3) and D (4), and two new sesquiterpene lactones, tsoongianolides E (5) and F (6), all of which possess the eremophilane skeleton, were isolated. Two known eremophilane dimers (7) and (8) were also obtained from this species. Their absolute structures were elucidated by 1D- and 2D-NMR techniques and by X-ray diffraction studies, along with chemical evidence.
