Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to use conservative descent to study semi-orthogonal decompositions for some homogeneous varieties over general bases. We produce a semi-orthogonal decomposition for the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a generalized Severi-Brauer scheme. This extends known results for Sever-Brauer varieties and Grassmanianns. We use our results to construct semi-orthogonal decompositions for flag varieties over arbitrary bases. This generalises a result of Kapranov.

Abstract:For a smooth projective family of schemes we prove that a semiorthogonal decomposition of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves of a fibre uniquely deforms over an étale neighbourhood of the point. We do this using a comparison theorem between semiorthogonal decompositions and decomposition triangles of the structure sheaf of the diagonal. We then apply to the latter a deformation theory for morphisms with a fixed lift of the target, which is developed in the appendix. Using this as a key ingredient we introduce a moduli space which classifies semiorthogonal decompositions of the category of perfect complexes of a smooth projective family. Using Artin's criterion, we show that this is an étale algebraic space over the base scheme of the family, which can be non-quasicompact and non-separated. We generalise this to families of geometric noncommutative schemes in the sense of Orlov. We also define a subfunctor classifying nontrivial semiorthogonal decompositions only, and conjecture it is an open and closed subspace.

Producing "new" semi-orthogonal decompositions in arithmetic geometry

Abstract:This paper is devoted to constructing "new" admissible subcategories and semi-orthogonal decompositions of triangulated categories out of "old" ones. For two triangulated subcategories $T$ and $T'$ of a certain $D$ and a decomposition $(L,R)$ of $T$ we look either for a decomposition $(L',R')$ of $T'$ such that there are no non-zero $D$-morphisms from $L$ into $L'$ and from $R$ into $R'$, or for a decomposition $(L_D,R_D)$ of $D$ such that $L_D\cap T=L$ and $R_D\cap T=R$. We prove some general existence statements (that also extend to semi-orthogonal decompositions with any number of components) and apply them to various derived categories of coherent sheaves over a scheme $X$ that is proper over a noetherian ring $R$. This gives a one-to-one correspondence between semi-orthogonal decompositions of $D_{perf}(X)$ and $D^b_{coh}(X)$; the latter extend to $D^-_{coh}(X)$, $D^+_{coh}({Qcoh}(X))$, $D_{coh}({Qcoh}(X))$, and $D({Qcoh}(X))$ under very mild conditions. In particular, we obtain a vast generalization of a theorem of J. Karmazyn, A. Kuznetsov, and E. Shinder. These applications rely on recent results of Neeman that express $D^b_{coh}(X)$ and $D^-_{coh}(X)$ in terms of $D_{perf}(X)$ along with its new variations corresponding to $D^+_{coh}({Qcoh}(X))$ and $D_{coh}({Qcoh}(X))$. We also discuss an application of this theorem to the construction of certain adjoint functors.

Abstract:We consider the category of modules over sheaves of Deformation-Quantization (DQ) algebras on bionic symplectic varieties. These spaces are equipped with both an elliptic $\mathbb{G}_m$-action and a Hamiltonian $\mathbb{G}_m$-action, with finitely many fixed points. On these spaces one can consider geometric category $\mathcal{O}$: the category of (holonomic) modules supported on the Lagrangian attracting set of the Hamiltonian action. We show that there exists a local generator in geometric category $\mathcal{O}$ whose dg endomorphism ring, cohomologically supported on the Lagrangian attracting set, is derived equivalent to the category of all DQ-modules. This is a version of Koszul duality generalizing the equivalence between D-modules on a smooth variety and dg-modules over the de Rham complex.

Partial semiorthogonal decompositions for quiver moduli

Abstract:We embed several copies of the derived category of a quiver and certain line bundles in the derived category of an associated moduli space of representations, giving the start of a semiorthogonal decomposition. This mirrors the semiorthogonal decompositions of moduli of vector bundles on curves. Our results are obtained with QuiverTools, an open-source package of tools for quiver representations, their moduli spaces and their geometrical properties.

Abstract:Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of any characteristic, and let $(X,P)$ be an orbifold curve over $k$. We construct the moduli space $\mathrm{M}_{(X,P)}^{\mathrm{ss}}(n, \Delta)$ of $P$-semistable bundles on $(X,P)$ of rank $n$ and determinant $\Delta$. In the characteristic zero case, this result is well known and follows from GIT techniques. Our construction follows a different approach inspired by a GIT-free construction of Faltings. We show that when the moduli space is non-empty, it is a finite disjoint union of irreducible projective varieties.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 3$ and $S \rightarrow X$ a $2:1$ branched covering defined by a generic quadratic differential on $X$. In the following notes, we explore how taking direct images of line bundles defined by certain distinguished special divisors on $S$ gives rank-2 bundles having nilpotent Higgs fields on $X$. The key ingredient is the notion of Baker-Akhiezer divisors associated to Higgs bundles and choices of subbundles of the underlying rank-2 bundles.

Quasi-BPS categories for Higgs bundles

Abstract:We introduce quasi-BPS categories for twisted Higgs bundles, which are building blocks of the derived category of coherent sheaves on the moduli stack of semistable twisted Higgs bundles over a smooth projective curve. Under some condition (called BPS condition), the quasi-BPS categories are non-commutative analogues of Hitchin integrable systems. We begin the study of these quasi-BPS categories by focusing on a conjectural symmetry which swaps the Euler characteristic and the weight. Our conjecture is inspired by the Dolbeault Geometric Langlands equivalence of Donagi--Pantev, by the Hausel--Thaddeus mirror symmetry, and by the $\chi$-independence phenomenon for BPS invariants of curves on Calabi-Yau threefolds. We prove our conjecture in the case of rank two and genus zero. In higher genus, we prove a derived equivalence of rank two stable twisted Higgs moduli spaces as a special case of our conjecture. In a separate paper, we prove a version of our conjecture for the topological K-theory of quasi-BPS categories and we discuss the relation between quasi-BPS categories and BPS invariants of the corresponding local Calabi-Yau threefold.

Abstract:We compute the Borel equivariant cohomology ring of the left $K$-action on a homogeneous space $G/H$, where $G$ is a connected Lie group, $H$ and $K$ are closed, connected subgroups and $2$ and the torsion primes of the Lie groups are units of the coefficient ring. As a special case, this gives the singular cohomology rings of biquotients $H \backslash G / K$. This depends on a version of the Eilenberg-Moore theorem developed in the appendix, where a novel multiplicative structure on the two-sided bar construction $\mathbf{B}(A',A,A")$ is defined, valid when $A' \leftarrow A \to A"$ is a pair of maps of homotopy Gerstenhaber algebras.

Half-spherical twists on derived categories of coherent sheaves

Abstract:For a flat morphism $\pi \colon X \to T$ between smooth quasi-projective varieties and its fiber $X_0$, we prove that spherical objects on $D^b(X)$ pushed-forward from $D^b(X_0)$ induce autoequivalences of $D^b(X_0)$ itself. Our construction provides new derived symmetries for some singular varieties, which include singular fibers of elliptic surfaces (commonly referred to as Kodaira fibers) and type $III$ degenerations of K3 surfaces. In the case of Kodaira fibers of type $I_n$, we also show the induced autoequivalences of $D^b(X_0)$ correspond to the half twists on the $n$-punctured $2$-torus via homological mirror symmetry. As an application, we describe the autoequivalence groups of elliptic surfaces in terms of mapping class groups of punctured tori.

Categorical actions and derived equivalences for finite odd-dimensional orthogonal groups

Abstract:In this paper we prove that Broué's abelian defect group conjecture is true for the finite odd-dimensional orthogonal groups $\SO_{2n+1}(q)$ at linear primes with $q$ odd. We first make use of the reduction theorem of Bonnafé-Dat-Rouquier to reduce the problem to isolated blocks. Then we construct a categorical action of a Kac-Moody algebra on the category of quadratic unipotent representations of the various groups $\SO_{2n+1}(q)$ in non-defining characteristic, by generalizing the corresponding work of Dudas-Varagnolo-Vasserot for unipotent representations. This is one of the main ingredients of our work which may be of independent interest. To obtain derived equivalences of blocks and their Brauer correspondents, we define and investigate isolated RoCK blocks. Finally, we establish the desired derived equivalence based on the work of Chuang-Rouquier that categorical actions provide derived equivalences between certain weight spaces.

Abstract:The Hecke algebras for all symmetric groups taken together form a braided monoidal category that controls all quantum link invariants of type A and, by extension, the standard canon of topological quantum field theories in dimension 3 and 4. Here we provide the first categorification of this Hecke braided monoidal category, which takes the form of an $\mathbb{E}_2$-monoidal $(\infty,2)$-category whose hom-$(\infty,1)$-categories are $k$-linear, stable, idempotent-complete, and equipped with $\mathbb{Z}$-actions. This categorification is designed to control homotopy-coherent link homology theories and to-be-constructed topological quantum field theories in dimension 4 and 5.

BPS algebras and generalised Kac-Moody algebras from 2-Calabi-Yau categories

Abstract:We determine the structure of the BPS algebra of $2$-Calabi-Yau Abelian categories whose stack of objects admits a good moduli space. We prove that this algebra is isomorphic to the positive part of the enveloping algebra of a generalised Kac-Moody Lie algebra generated by the intersection cohomology of certain connected components (corresponding to roots) of the good moduli space. Some major examples include the BPS algebras of (1) the category of semistable coherent sheaves of given slope on a K3 surface or, more generally, quasiprojective symplectic surface, (2) semistable Higgs bundles on smooth projective curves, (3) preprojective algebras of quivers, (4) multiplicative preprojective algebras and (5) fundamental groups of (quiver) Riemann surfaces. We define the BPS Lie algebras of $2$-Calabi-Yau categories and prove that they coincide with the ones obtained by dimensional reduction from the critical cohomological Hall algebra in the case in which the 2-Calabi-Yau category is the category of representations of a preprojective algebra. Consequences include (1) A proof in full generality of the Bozec-Schiffmann positivity conjecture for absolutely cuspidal polynomials, a strengthening of the Kac positivity conjecture (2) A proof of the cohomological integrality conjecture for the category of semistable coherent sheaves on local K3 surfaces (3) A description of the cohomology (in all degrees) of Nakajima quiver varieties as direct sums of irreducible lowest weight representations over the BPS Lie algebra.

A Semi-orthogonal Sequence in the Derived Category of the Hilbert Scheme of Three Points

Abstract:For a smooth projective variety $X$ of dimension $d \geq 5$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero, it is shown in this paper that the bounded derived category of the Hilbert scheme of three points $X^{[3]}$ admits a semi-orthogonal sequence of length $\binom{d-3}{2}$. Each subcategory in this sequence is equivalent to the derived category of $X$ and realized as the image of a Fourier-Mukai transform along a Grassmannian bundle $\mathbb{G}$ over $X$ parametrizing planar subschemes in $X^{[3]}$. The main ingredient in the proof is the computation of the normal bundle of $\mathbb{G}$ in $X^{[3]}$. An analogous result for generalized Kummer varieties is deduced at the end.

Abstract:In this article we study a relative monoidal version of the Bondal-Orlov reconstruction theorem. We establish an uniqueness result for tensor triangulated category structures $(\boxtimes,\mathbb{1})$ on the derived category $D^{b}(X)$ of a variety $X$ which is smooth projective and faithfully flat over a quasi-compact quasi-separated base scheme $S$ in the case where the fibers $X_{s}$ over any point $s\in S$ all have ample (anti-)canonical bundles. To do so we construct a stack $\Gamma$ of dg-bifunctors which parametrize the local homotopical behaviour of $\boxtimes$, and we study some of its properties around the derived categories of the fibers $X_{s}$.

Abstract:We show that the categorical action of the shifted q = 0 affine algebra can be used to construct semiorthogonal decomposition on the weight categories. In particular, this construction recovers Kapranov's exceptional collection when the weight categories are the derived categories of coherent sheaves on Grassmannians and n-step partial flag varieties. Finally, as an application, we use this result to construct a semiorthogonal decomposition on the derived categories of coherent sheaves on Grassmannians of a coherent sheaf with homological dimension ≤1 over a smooth projective variety X.

Cell decomposition and dual boundary complexes of character varieties

Abstract:The weak geometric P=W conjecture of L. Katzarkov, A. Noll, P. Pandit, and C. Simpson asserts that for any smooth Betti moduli space $\mathcal{M}_B$ of complex dimension $d$ over a punctured Riemann surface, the dual boundary complex $\mathbb{D}\partial\mathcal{M}_B$ is homotopy equivalent to a $(d-1)$-dimensional sphere. Here, we consider $\mathcal{M}_B$ as a generic $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$-character variety defined on a Riemann surface of genus $g$, with local monodromies specified by generic semisimple conjugacy classes at $k$ punctures. In this article, we establish the weak geometric P=W conjecture for all \emph{very generic} $\mathcal{M}_B$ in the sense that at least one conjugacy class is regular semisimple. A crucial step is to establish a stronger form of A. Mellit's cell decomposition theorem, i.e. we decompose $\mathcal{M}_B$ (without passing to a vector bundle) into locally closed subvarieties of the form $(\mathbb{C}^{\times})^{d-2b}\times\mathcal{A}$, where $\mathcal{A}$ is stably isomorphic to $\mathbb{C}^b$. A second ingredient involves a motivic characterization of the integral cohomology of dual boundary complexes developed in a subsequent article [Su24]. Following C. Simpson's strategy, the proof is now an inductive computation of the dual boundary complexes from such a cell decomposition.

Abstract:We investigate the behavior of semi-orthogonal decompositions of bounded derived categories of singular varieties under flat deformations to smooth varieties. We consider a Q-Gorenstein smoothing of a surface with a quotient singularity, and prove that a pretilting sheaf, which is constructed from a non-commutative deformation of a divisorial sheaf and generates a semi-orthogonal component of a bounded derived category, deforms to a direct sum of exceptional vector bundles which are mutually totally orthogonal.
