Abstract:The paper is devoted to the study of shock formation of the 3-dimensional quasilinear wave equation-(1 + 3G ''(0)(partial derivative(t)phi)(2))partial derivative(2)(t)phi + Delta phi = 0,where is a non-zero constant. We will exhibit a family of smooth initial data and show that the foliation of the incoming characteristic hypersurfaces collapses. Similar to 1-dimensional conservational laws, we refer this specific type breakdown of smooth solutions as shock formation. Since satisfies the classical null condition, it admits global smooth solutions for small data. Therefore, we will work with large data (in energy norm). Moreover, no symmetry condition is imposed on the initial datum. We emphasize the geometric perspectives of shock formation in the proof. More specifically, the key idea is to study the interplay between the following two objects: (1) the energy estimates of the linearized equations of ; (2) the differential geometry of the Lorentzian metric . Indeed, the study of the characteristic hypersurfaces (implies shock formation) is the study of the null hypersurfaces of g. The techniques in the proof are inspired by the work (Christodoulou in The Formation of Shocks in 3-Dimensional Fluids. Monographs in Mathematics, European Mathematical Society, 2007) in which the formation of shocks for 3-dimensional relativistic compressible Euler equations with small initial data is established. We also use the short pulse method which is introduced in the study of formation of black holes in general relativity in Christodoulou (The Formation of Black Holes in General Relativity. Monographs in Mathematics, European Mathematical Society, 2009) and generalized in Klainerman and Rodnianski (Acta Math 208(2):211-333, 2012).

Abstract:We study the formation of singularity for the Euler–Poisson system equipped with the Boltzmann relation, which describes the dynamics of ions in an electrostatic plasma. In general, it is known that smooth solutions to nonlinear hyperbolic equations fail to exist globally in time. We establish criteria for C 1 blow-up of the Euler–Poisson system, both for the isothermal and pressureless cases. In particular, our blow-up condition for the pressureless model does not require that the gradient of velocity is negatively large. In fact, our result particularly implies that the smooth solutions can break down even if the gradient of initial velocity is trivial. For the isothermal case, we prove that smooth solutions leave C 1 class in a finite time when the gradients of the Riemann functions are initially large.

A Study of the Early-stage Evolution of Relativistic Electron-Ion Shock using 3D PIC Simulations

Abstract:We report the results of a 3D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation carried out to study the early-stage evolution of the shock formed when an unmagnetized relativistic jet interacts with an ambient electron-ion plasma. Full-shock structures associated with the interaction are observed in the ambient frame. When open boundaries are employed in the direction of the jet; the forward shock is seen as a hybrid structure consisting of an electrostatic shock combined with a double layer, while the reverse shock is seen as a double layer. The ambient ions show two distinct features across the forward shock: a population penetrating into the shocked region from the precursor region and an accelerated population escaping from the shocked region into the precursor region. This behavior is a signature of a combination of an electrostatic shock and a double layer. Jet electrons are seen to be electrostatically trapped between the forward and reverse shock structures showing a ring-like distribution in a phase-space plot, while ambient electrons are thermalized and become essentially isotropic in the shocked region. The magnetic energy density grows to a few percent of the jet kinetic energy density at both the forward and the reverse shock transition layers in a rather short time scale. We see little disturbance of the jet ions over this time scale.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the shock formation problem for the 3-dimensional(3D) compressible Euler equations with damping inspired by the work \cite{BSV3Dfulleuler}. It will be shown that for a class of large data, the damping can not prevent the formation of point shock, and the damping effect shifts the shock time and the wave amplitude while the shock location and the blow up direction remain the same with the information of this point shock being computed explicitly. Moreover, the vorticity is concentrated in the non-blow-up direction, which varies exponentially due to the damping effect. Our proof is based on the estimates for the modulated self-similar variables and lower bounds for the Lagrangian trajectories.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem on formation and construction of a shock wave for three dimensional compressible Euler equations with the small perturbed spherical initial data is studied. If the given smooth initial data satisfy certain nondegeneracy conditions, then from the results in [22], we know that there exists a unique blowup point at the blowup time such that the first order derivatives of a smooth solution blow up, while the solution itself is still continuous at the blowup point. From the blowup point, we construct a weak entropy solution which is not uniformly Lipschitz continuous on two sides of a shock curve. Moreover the strength of the constructed shock is zero at the blowup point and then gradually increases. Additionally, some detailed and precise estimates on the solution are obtained in a neighbourhood of the blowup point.

Abstract:In this paper, both structural and dynamical stabilities of steady transonic shock solutions for one-dimensional Euler–Poisson systems are investigated. First, a steady transonic shock solution with a supersonic background charge is shown to be structurally stable with respect to small perturbations of the background charge, provided that the electric field is positive at the shock location. Second, any steady transonic shock solution with a supersonic background charge is proved to be dynamically and exponentially stable with respect to small perturbations of the initial data, provided the electric field is not too negative at the shock location. The proof of the first stability result relies on a monotonicity argument for the shock position and the downstream density, and on a stability analysis for subsonic and supersonic solutions. The dynamical stability of the steady transonic shock for the Euler–Poisson equations can be transformed to the global well-posedness of a free boundary problem for a quasilinear second order equation with nonlinear boundary conditions. The analysis for the associated linearized problem plays an essential role.

Abstract:The author studies the 2D isentropic Euler equations with the ideal gas law. He exhibits a set of smooth initial data that give rise to shock formation at a single point near the planar symmetry. These solutions to the 2D isentropic Euler equations are associated with non-zero vorticity at the shock and have uniform-in-time -Hölder bound. Moreover, these point shocks are of self-similar type and share the same profile, which is a solution to the 2D self-similar Burgers equation. The proof of the solutions, following the 3D construction of Buckmaster, Shkoller and Vicol (in 2023), is based on the stable 2D self-similar Burgers profile and the modulation method.

Abstract:We study singularity formation for the pressureless Euler-Poisson system of cold ion dynamics. In contrast to the Euler-Poisson system with pressure, when its smooth solutions experience $C^1$ blow-up, the $L^\infty$ norm of the density becomes unbounded, which is often referred to as a delta-shock. We provide a constructive proof of singularity formation to obtain an exact blow-up profile and the detailed asymptotic behavior of the solutions near the blow-up point in both time and space. Our result indicates that at the blow-up time $t=T_\ast$, the density function is unbounded but is locally integrable with the profile of $\rho(x,T_\ast) \sim (x-x_*)^{-2/3}$ near the blow-up point $x=x_\ast$. This profile is not yet a Dirac measure. On the other hand, the velocity function has $C^{1/3}$ regularity at the blow-up point. Loosely following our analysis, we also obtain an exact blow-up profile for the pressureless Euler equations.

Structure of singularities for the Euler-Poisson system of ion dynamics

Abstract:We study the formation of singularity for the isothermal Euler-Poisson system arising from plasma physics. Contrast to the previous studies yielding only limited information on the blow-up solutions, for instance, sufficient conditions for the blow-up and the temporal blow-up rate along the characteristic curve, we rather give a constructive proof of singularity formation from smooth initial data. More specifically, employing the stable blow-up profile of the Burgers equation in the self-similar variables, we establish the global stability estimate in the self-similar time, which yields the asymptotic behavior of blow-up solutions near the singularity point. Our analysis indicates that the smooth solution to the Euler-Poisson system can develop a cusp-type singularity; it exhibits $C^1$ blow-up in a finite time, while it belongs to $C^{1/3}$ at the blow-up time, provided that smooth initial data are sufficiently close to the blow-up profile in some weighted $C^4$-topology. We also present a similar result for the isentropic case, and discuss noteworthy differences in the analysis.

Abstract:It is well-known that shock will form in finite time for hyperbolic conservation laws from initial nonlinear compression no matter how small and smooth the data are. Classical results, including Lax [14], Liu [22], Li-Zhou-Kong [16], confirm that when initial data are small smooth perturbations near constant states, blowup in gradient of solutions occurs in finite time if and only if intial data contain any compression in some truly nonlinear characteristic field. A natural puzzle is that: Will this picture keep true for large data problem of physical systems such as compressible Euler equations? One of the key issues is how to find an effective way to obtain sharp enough control on density lower bound. For isentropic flow, we offer a complete picture on the finite time shock formation from smooth initial data away from vacuum, which is consistent with small data theory. For adiabatic flow, we show a striking observation that initial weak compressions do not necessarily develop singularity in finite time, in a sharp contrast to the small data theory. Furthermore, we find the critical strength of nonlinear compression, and prove that if the compression is stronger than this critical value, then singularity develops in finite time, and otherwise there are a class of initial data admitting global smooth solutions with maximum strength of compression equals to this critical value.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a transonic shock problem for the Euler flows through a class of 2-D or 3-D nozzles. The nozzle is assumed to be symmetric in the diverging (or converging) part. If the supersonic incoming flow is symmetric near the divergent (or convergent) part of the nozzle, then, as indicated in Section 147 of [R. Courant, K.O. Friedrichs, Supersonic Flow and Shock Waves, Interscience Publ., New York, 19481, there exist two constant pressures P-1 and P-2 with P-1 < P-2 such that for given constant exit pressure P-e is an element of (P-1, P-2), a symmetric transonic shock exists uniquely in the nozzle, and the position and the strength of the shock are completely determined by P-e. Moreover, it is shown in this paper that such a transonic shock solution is unique under the restriction that the shock goes through the fixed point at the wall in the multidimensional setting. Furthermore, we establish the global existence, stability and the long time asymptotic behavior of an unsteady symmetric transonic shock under the exit pressure Pe when the initial unsteady shock lies in the symmetric diverging part of the 2-D or 3-D nozzle. On the other hand, it is shown that an unsteady symmetric transonic shock is structurally unstable in a global-in-time sense if it lies in the symmetric converging part of the nozzle. Abstract:The existence and properties of low Mach-number (M greater than or similar to 1) electrostatic collisionless shocks are investigated with a semi-analytical solution for the shock structure. We show that the properties of the shock obtained in the semi-analytical model can be well reproduced in fully kinetic Eulerian Vlasov-Poisson simulations, where the shock is generated by the decay of an initial density discontinuity. Using this semi-analytical model, we study the effect of the electron-to-ion temperature ratio and the presence of impurities on both the maximum shock potential and the Mach number. We find that even a small amount of impurities can influence the shock properties significantly, including the reflected light ion fraction, which can change several orders of magnitude. Electrostatic shocks in heavy ion plasmas reflect most of the hydrogen impurity ions.
