Abstract:The ultrafast excited-state dynamics of 2,4-dimethylpyrrole following excitation at wavelengths in the range of 255.8-199.7 nm are studied using the time-resolved photoelectron imaging method. It is found that excitation at longer wavelengths (255.8, 250.0, 246.0 and 242.0 nm) results in population of the S-1((1)pi sigma*) state, which decays out of the photoionization window in less than 30 fs. At 237.7 nm, the second 1 ps* state is excited, which decays in about 130 fs. At shorter pump wavelengths (231.8, 224.8, 217.5 and 199.7 nm), the assignments are less clear-cut. We tentatively assign the initially photoexcited states to the (1)pi 3p Rydberg states, which decay in about 60 fs, with internal conversion to the S1(1 ps*) state as one of the decay channels. The lifetimes of these (1)pi 3p Rydberg states vary little with the pump wavelengths in this wavelength range.

Abstract:The ultrafast excited-state dynamics of 2,5-dimethylpyrrole following excitation at wavelengths in the range of 265.7-216.7 nm is studied using the time-resolved photoelectron imaging method. It is found that excitation at longer wavelengths (265.7-250.2 nm) results in the population of the S1(1πσ*) state, which decays out of the photoionization window in about 90 fs. At shorter pump wavelengths (242.1-216.7 nm), the assignments are less clear-cut. We tentatively assign the initially photoexcited state(s) to the 1π3p Rydberg state(s) which has lifetimes of 159 ± 20, 125 ± 15, 102 ± 10 and 88 ± 10 fs for the pump wavelengths of 242.1, 238.1, 232.6 and 216.7 nm, respectively. Internal conversion to the S1(1πσ*) state represents at most a minor decay channel. The methyl substitution effects on the decay dynamics of the excited states of pyrrole are also discussed. Methyl substitution on the pyrrole ring seems to enhance the direct internal conversion from the 1π3p Rydberg state to the ground state, while methyl substitution on the N atom has less influence and the internal conversion to the S1(πσ*) state represents a main channel.

Abstract:The ultrafast decay dynamics of pyridine-N-oxide upon excitation in the near-ultraviolet range of 340.2-217.6 nm is investigated using femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging technique. The time-resolved photoelectron spectra and photoelectron angular distributions at all pump wavelengths are carefully analyzed and the following view is derived: at the longest pump wavelengths (340.2 and 325.6 nm), pyridine-N-oxide is excited to the S1(1ππ*) state with different vibrational levels. The depopulation rate of the S1 state shows a marked dependence on vibrational energy and mode, and the lifetime is in the range of 1.4-160 ps. At 289.8 and 280.5 nm, both the second 1ππ* state and the S1 state are initially prepared. The former has an extremely short lifetime of ∼60 fs, which indicates that the ultrafast deactivation pathway such as a rapid internal conversion to one close-lying state is its dominant decay channel, while the latter is at high levels of vibrational excitation and decays in 380-520 fs. At the shortest pump wavelengths (227.3 and 217.6 nm), another excited state of Rydberg character is mostly excited. We assign this state to the 3s Rydberg state which has a lifetime of 0.55-2.2 ps. This study provides a comprehensive picture of the ultrafast excited-state decay dynamics of the photoexcited pyridine-N-oxide molecule.

Abstract:The ultrafast dynamics through conical intersections in 2,6-dimethylpyridine has been studied by femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging coupled with time-resolved mass spectroscopy. Upon absorption of 266 nm pump laser, 2,6-dimethylpyridine is excited to the S 2 state with a ππ* character from S 0 state. The time evolution of the parent ion signals consists of two exponential decays. One is a fast component on a timescale of 635 fs and the other is a slow component with a timescale of 4.37 ps. Time-dependent photo-electron angular distributions and energy-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy are extracted from time-resolved photoelectron imaging and provide the evolutive information of S 2 state. In brief, the ultrafast component is a population transfer from S 2 to S 1 through the S 2/S 1 conical intersections, the slow component is attributed to simultaneous IC from the S 2 state and the higher vibrational levels of S 1 state to S 0 state, which involves the coupling of S 2/S 0 and S 1/S 0 conical intersections. Additionally, the observed ultrafast S 2→S 1 transition occurs only with an 18% branching ratio. © 2011 Chinese Physical Society.

Abstract:The ultrafast relaxation dynamics of furfural and 5-methylfurfural following excitation in the ultraviolet range is investigated using the femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy method. Specifically, the pump wavelength-dependent decay dynamics of electronically excited furfural and 5-methylfurfural is discussed on the basis of a detailed analysis of our measured time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy spectra. Irradiation at all pump wavelengths prepares both furfural and 5-methylfurfural molecules with different vibrational levels in the first optically bright S2 (1ππ*) state, the lifetime of which is measured to be at least hundreds of femtoseconds. Besides the prominent deactivation channels of ring-opening and ring-puckering pathways for the S2(1ππ*) state, we propose that there is a minor decay channel of internal conversion from the initially prepared S2(1ππ*) state to the S1(1nπ*) state. The wavepacket decays out of the Franck-Condon region on the S2(1ππ*) state potential energy surface and bifurcates into different parts somewhere. A small fraction of the wavepacket funnels down to the S1(1nπ*) state via internal conversion. The subsequently populated S1(1nπ*) state contains large vibrational excess energy and decays over a lifetime of 2.5-2.8 ps. One of the deactivation channels of the S1(1nπ*) state is intersystem crossing to the 3ππ* triplet state. In addition, methyl substitution effects on the excited-state dynamics of furfural are also discussed. This experimental study provides new insights into the excitation energy-dependent decay dynamics of photoexcited furfural and 5-methylfurfural.

Abstract:The dynamics of electronically excited states in 2-picoline is studied using femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging spectroscopy. The internal conversion from the S2 state to the vibrationally excited S1 state is observed in real time. The secondarily populated high vibronic S1 state deactivates further to the S0 state. Photoelectron energy and angular distributions reveal the feature of ionization from the singlet 3p Rydberg states. In addition, variation of time-dependent anisotropy parameters indicates the rotational coherence of the molecule.

Abstract:The vibrational wavepacket dynamics at the very early stages of the S-1-T-1 intersystem crossing in photoexcited pyrimidine is visualized in real time by femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging and time-resolved mass spectroscopy. A coherent superposition of the vibrational states is prepared by the femtosecond pump pulse at 315.3 nm, resulting in a vibrational wavepacket. The composition of the prepared wavepacket is directly identified by a sustained quantum beat superimposed on the parent-ion transient, possessing a frequency in accord with the energy separation between the 6a(1) and 6b(2) states. The dephasing time of the vibrational wavepacket is determined to be 82 ps. More importantly, the variable Franck-Condon factors between the wavepacket components and the dispersed cation vibrational levels are experimentally illustrated to identify the dark state and follow the energy-flow dynamics on the femtosecond time scale. The time-dependent intensities of the photo-electron peaks originated from the 6a(1) vibrational state exhibit a clear quantum beating pattern with similar periodicity but a phase shift of pi rad with respect to those from the 6b(2) state, offering an unambiguous picture of the restricted intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution dynamics in the 6a(1)/6b(2) Fermi resonance. Abstract:Ultrafast non-adiabatic dynamics of the small heteroaromatic compound 2-thiopyridone has been studied with surface hopping simulations based on multi-configurational quantum chemistry. Initial excitation of the bright <math> <mrow><msub><mtext>S</mtext> <mn>2</mn></msub> <mo>(</mo> <mi>π</mi> <mo>,</mo> <msup><mi>π</mi> <mo>*</mo></msup> <mo>)</mo></mrow> </math> state is found to promptly relax to <math> <mrow><msub><mtext>S</mtext> <mn>1</mn></msub> <mo>(</mo> <mi>n</mi> <mo>,</mo> <mo> </mo> <msup><mi>π</mi> <mo>*</mo></msup> </mrow> </math> ) through in-plane motion. The subsequent dynamics are oppositely driven by out-of-plane motion, which results in both complex population transfers among all the available states and intersystem crossing predominantly through the "El-Sayed forbidden" <math> <mrow><msub><mtext>S</mtext> <mn>1</mn></msub> <mo>(</mo> <mi>n</mi> <mo>,</mo> <mo> </mo> <msup><mi>π</mi> <mo>*</mo></msup> </mrow> </math> ) to <math> <mrow><msub><mtext>T</mtext> <mn>2</mn></msub> <mo>(</mo> <mi>n</mi> <mo>,</mo> <mo> </mo> <msup><mi>π</mi> <mo>*</mo></msup> </mrow> </math> ) channel, through significant mixing of electronic excitation characters. Despite this complexity, the femto- to picosecond triplet population, expected from several spectroscopic measurements, is well described as a simple exponential decay of the singlet state manifold. No proton transfer is found in the reported trajectories, but two mechanisms for its possible mediation in previously reported experiments are proposed based on the observed structural dynamics: (i) ultrafast intra-molecular transfer driven by the initially coherent in-plane motion and (ii) inter-molecular solvent-mediated transfer driven by the out-of-plane modes that dominate the later motion.

Abstract:In this work, two-color pump-probe measurements, were performed to study the effect of the structural configuration on the excited state decay dynamics of dithienylethene photochromism systems under ring-closure state. Obvious different transient absorption dynamics were observed under parallel and perpendicular polarization configurations. The rising part of the perpendicular component probed at wavelength of 800nm was clearly delayed compared with the parallel component, indicating some overlap between pure excited state decay dynamic and some processes of other mechanism.

Abstract:The ultrafast excited-state dynamics of a cyanine dye, 3,3'-bis(3-sulfopropyl)-5,5'-dimethoxythiacyanine triethylaminium salt, was investigated by using conventional time-resolved fluorescence up-conversion technique. The fluorescence decay can be well described as tri-exponential kinetics, which indicates the excited-state population decays through the bond-twist, vibrational and radiative relaxation channels. Further analysis shows that the contributions of the three relaxation channels to the fluorescence decay demonstrate very different change with increasing the fluorescence wavelength, through which the detailed dynamics at different regions in the excited-state potential energy surface can be retrieved. Abstract:The development of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) has enabled ultrafast X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments, which are capable of resolving electronic/vibrational transitions and structural changes in molecules, or capturing molecular movies. While time-resolved XRD has received increasing attention, the extraction of information content from signals is challenging and requires theoretical support. In this work, we combined X-ray scattering theory and trajectory surface hopping approach to resolve dynamical changes in the electronic structure of photo-excited molecules by studying time evolution of electron density changes between electronic excited states and ground state. Using pyrazine molecule as an example, we show that key features of reaction pathways can be identified, enabling the capture of structural changes associated with electronic transitions for a photo-excited molecule.

Abstract:In this theoretical study, we show how photoelectron signals generated by time-energy entangled photon pairs can monitor ultrafast excited state dynamics of molecules with high joint spectral and temporal resolutions, not limited by the Fourier uncertainty of classical light. This technique scales linearly, rather than quadratically, with the pump intensity, allowing the study of fragile biological samples with low photon fluxes. Since the spectral resolution is achieved by electron detection and the temporal resolution by a variable phase delay, this technique does not require scanning the pump frequency and the entanglement times, which significantly simplifies the experimental setup, making it feasible with current instrumentation. Application is made to the photodissociation dynamics of pyrrole calculated by exact nonadiabatic wave packet simulations in a reduced two nuclear coordinate space. This study demonstrates the unique advantages of ultrafast quantum light spectroscopy.

Abstract:Detailed simulation study is reported for the excited-state dynamics of photoisomerization of cis-tetraphenylethylene (TPE) following excitation by a femtosecond laser pulse. The technique for this investigation is semiclassical dynamics simulation, which is described briefly in the paper. Upon photoexcitation by a femtosecond laser pulse, the stretching motion of the ethylenic bond of TPE is initially excited, leading to a significant lengthening of ethylenic bond in 300 fs. Twisting motion about the ethylenic bond is activated by the energy released from the relaxation of the stretching mode. The 90 degrees twisting about the ethylenic bond from an approximately planar geometry to nearly a perpendicular conformation in the electronically excited state is completed in 600 fs. The torsional dynamics of phenyl rings which is temporally lagging behind occurs at about 5 ps. Finally, the twisted TPE reverts to the initial conformation along the twisting coordinate through nonadiabatic transitions. The simulation results provide a basis for understanding several spectroscopic observations at molecular levels, including ultrafast dynamic Stokes shift, multicomponent fluorescence, viscosity dependence of the fluorescence lifetime, and radiationless decay from electronically excited state to the ground state along the isomerization coordinate.

Abstract:The decay dynamics in excited states of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene has been investigated by combining time-resolved photoelectron imaging with time-resolved mass spectroscopy. The ultrafast internal conversion from the initially optical excited S2 state to the vibration hot S1 state on time scale of 72fs is observed. The lifetime of secondary populated S1 state was determined to be about 16.4ps, which might be originated from internal conversion to ground state or intersystem crossing to triplet states.

Abstract:We measured the ultrafast dynamics of photoexcitations in a variety of semiconductor pi-conjugated polymer films and solutions, in the spectral range from 0.13 eV to 1.05 eV and time domain from 100 fs to 800 ps. The measurements were made in the low signal regime, where the relative changes in transmission, Delta T/T < 10(-5). In pristine poly [2-methoxy-5(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV) solution we found that the primary photoexcitations are excitons with a photoinduced absorption (PA) band PA(1) at 1.0 eV. In pristine MEH-PPV film, however we found two PA bands, PA(1) at 1.0eV and P-1 at 0.3eV. We consider P-1 to be due to a polarons that are photogenerated intrinsically via defects and/or impurities. When following the transient dynamics of PA(1) in C-60-doped PPV-based films we could easily measure the dynamics of exciton dissociation from the polymer chains onto the C-60 molecules. We found the charge transfer time to range from about 100 fs to 100 ps, depending on the concentration of C-60 molecules in the films.

Abstract:Electronic and nuclear dynamics in one Because of the complex, ultrafast interplay between nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom, probing both nuclear and electronic dynamics in excited electronic states within a single time-resolved experiment is a great challenge. Yang et al. used ultrafast electron diffraction in combination with ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics and diffraction simulations to study the relaxation dynamics of isolated pyridine molecules after photoexcitation to the S 1 state (see the Perspective by Domcke and Sobolewski). They showed that electronic state evolution and molecular structural changes can be recorded simultaneously and independently by tracing a transient signal in small-angle inelastic scattering and large-angle elastic diffraction, respectively. Abstract:We present results of picosecond photoinduced absorption (PA) and time-resolved photoluminescence studies on solid and solution forms of poly(p-pyridyl vinylene). The nearly identical PA response of all forms of the polymer reflects the generation of the same primary photoexcitation, a Couloumbically bound intrachain singlet exciton, and the absence of exotic species such as interchain excimers. The time dependence of the PA points to direct intersystem crossing as the origin of triplet excitons, ruling out generation of free carriers as a precursor to exciton formation.
