Abstract:The ultrafast decay dynamics of pyridine-N-oxide upon excitation in the near-ultraviolet range of 340.2-217.6 nm is investigated using femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging technique. The time-resolved photoelectron spectra and photoelectron angular distributions at all pump wavelengths are carefully analyzed and the following view is derived: at the longest pump wavelengths (340.2 and 325.6 nm), pyridine-N-oxide is excited to the S1(1ππ*) state with different vibrational levels. The depopulation rate of the S1 state shows a marked dependence on vibrational energy and mode, and the lifetime is in the range of 1.4-160 ps. At 289.8 and 280.5 nm, both the second 1ππ* state and the S1 state are initially prepared. The former has an extremely short lifetime of ∼60 fs, which indicates that the ultrafast deactivation pathway such as a rapid internal conversion to one close-lying state is its dominant decay channel, while the latter is at high levels of vibrational excitation and decays in 380-520 fs. At the shortest pump wavelengths (227.3 and 217.6 nm), another excited state of Rydberg character is mostly excited. We assign this state to the 3s Rydberg state which has a lifetime of 0.55-2.2 ps. This study provides a comprehensive picture of the ultrafast excited-state decay dynamics of the photoexcited pyridine-N-oxide molecule.

Ultrafast Depopulation of a Quantum Dot by LA-phonon-assisted Stimulated Emission

Abstract:We demonstrate ultrafast incoherent depopulation of a quantum dot from above to below the transparency point using LA-phonon-assisted emission stimulated by a redshifted laser pulse. The QD is turned from a weakly vibronic system into a strongly vibronic one by laser driving which enables the phonon-assisted relaxation between the excitonic components of two dressed states. The depopulation is achieved within a laser pulse-width-limited time of 20 ps and exhibits a broad tuning range of a few meV. Our experimental results are well reproduced by path-integral calculations.

Abstract:Ionization and dissociation mechanisms of pyrrolidine in intense 800 nm laser field (10(13) to 10(14) W/cm(2)) have been experimentally investigated by using a method of molecular beam and time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Singly charged parent ion and numerous fragment ions are observed in the mass spectra, which are investigated as a function of laser intensity and polarization. In order to understand the details of the ionization processes of pyrrolidine in intense femtosecond laser field, we quantitatively calculate the rate constants and ion yields by means of generalized Keldysh-Faisal-Reiss theory, and the excitation probabilities of the excited states are also calculated by using Floquet theory. The results suggest that the ionization might occur partially through the excited states of neutral pyrrolidine. Comparing with linearly polarized (LP) laser field, we observe some enhancement of fragmentation with a circularly polarized (CP) laser field above the saturation threshold intensity which might be explained by the active energies of the pyrrolidine molecular ions are different under CP and LP laser irradiated. To interpret the dissociation patterns of the pyrrolidine ions, we have used the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus theory with the potential surfaces obtained from the ab initio quantum chemical calculations.
Theoretical Study and Experimental Validation on the Optical Emission Processes in “free” and “locked” Pyrazine Derivatives

Abstract:The excited-state properties of the “free” and “locked” pyrazine derivatives are investigated in solution. DCFP with “free” phenyls is theoretically calculated to be non-emissive due to the non-radiative energy dissipation through strong Duschinsky rotation effect, in agreement with the available experimental result. Surprisingly, DCBP with “bi-locked” phenyls is also calculated to be nonluminous. The emission of DCAP with “conjoined” architecture is predicted to be weaker than DCPP with “single-locked” phenyls, quite contrary to our intuition but further validated by the experimental measurement. The construction of four-, five- and six-membered ring respectively in DCBP, DCAP and DCPP is found to be the major structural origin for the descending relaxation energy in these “locked” systems, thus giving rise to the ascending luminescence order. Our work not only provides strategy for the molecular design of efficient organic light-emitting materials, but also offers valuable insight into the aggregation-induced emission phenomena.
Laser-Induced Electronic and Vibronic Dynamics in the Pyrene Molecule and its Cation

Abstract:Among polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pyrene is widely used as an optical probe thanks to peculiar ultraviolet absorption and infrared emission features. Interestingly, this molecule is also an abundant component of the interstellar medium, where it is detected via its unique spectral fingerprints. In this work, we present a comprehensive first-principles study on the electronic and vibrational response of pyrene and its cation to ultrafast, coherent pulses in resonance with their optically active excitations in the ultraviolet region. The analysis of molecular symmetries, electronic structure, and linear optical spectra is used to interpret transient absorption spectra and kinetic energy spectral densities computed for the systems excited by ultrashort laser fields. By disentangling the effects of the electronic and vibrational dynamics via \textit{ad hoc} simulations with stationary and moving ions, and, in specific cases, with the aid of auxiliary model systems, we rationalize that the nuclear motion is mainly harmonic in the neutral species, while strong anharmonic oscillations emerge in the cation, driven by electronic coherence. Our results provide additional insight into the ultrafast vibronic dynamics of pyrene and related compounds and set the stage for future investigations on more complex carbon-conjugated molecules.

Abstract:We calculate the lifetime of both the o-Ps and the p-Ps positronium annihilation decay Ps → γγ in the strong circular polarized laser field. We take a strategy of the factorization to separate the effects caused by the Coulomb interaction and the strong laser field interaction. It is factorized in the time direction but not in the space direction. Our results show that in the laser with long wavelength and high intensity, the lifetimes of those Ps states are dramatically increased. For CO2 laser with 10 μm wavelength and 1013 W/cm2 intensity, lifetime of the spin-single positronium is increased by 108 times. Our result is consistent with those obtained by solving the Schödinger equation. This effect may be useful for the high harmonic generation (HHG) effects provided with the Ps [Phys. Rev. Lett. 70 (1993) 774; Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 (2004) 013601].

Abstract:In this study, we have explored the ultrafast formation and decay dynamics of exciton-polariton fluids at non-zero momenta, non-resonantly excited by a small-spot femtosecond pump pulse in a ZnO microcavity. Using the femtosecond angle-resolved spectroscopic imaging technique, multidimensional dynamics in both the energy and momentum degrees of freedom have been obtained. Two distinct regions with different decay rate in the energy dimension and various decay-channels in the momentum dimension can be well-resolved. Theoretical simulations based on the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation can reach a qualitative agreement with the experimental observations, demonstrating the significance of the initial potential barrier induced by the the pump pulse during the decay process. The finding of our study can provide additional insights into the fundamental understanding of exciton-polariton condensates, enabling further advancements for controlling the fluids and practical applications.

Abstract:The ultrafast relaxation dynamics of furfural and 5-methylfurfural following excitation in the ultraviolet range is investigated using the femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy method. Specifically, the pump wavelength-dependent decay dynamics of electronically excited furfural and 5-methylfurfural is discussed on the basis of a detailed analysis of our measured time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy spectra. Irradiation at all pump wavelengths prepares both furfural and 5-methylfurfural molecules with different vibrational levels in the first optically bright S2 (1ππ*) state, the lifetime of which is measured to be at least hundreds of femtoseconds. Besides the prominent deactivation channels of ring-opening and ring-puckering pathways for the S2(1ππ*) state, we propose that there is a minor decay channel of internal conversion from the initially prepared S2(1ππ*) state to the S1(1nπ*) state. The wavepacket decays out of the Franck-Condon region on the S2(1ππ*) state potential energy surface and bifurcates into different parts somewhere. A small fraction of the wavepacket funnels down to the S1(1nπ*) state via internal conversion. The subsequently populated S1(1nπ*) state contains large vibrational excess energy and decays over a lifetime of 2.5-2.8 ps. One of the deactivation channels of the S1(1nπ*) state is intersystem crossing to the 3ππ* triplet state. In addition, methyl substitution effects on the excited-state dynamics of furfural are also discussed. This experimental study provides new insights into the excitation energy-dependent decay dynamics of photoexcited furfural and 5-methylfurfural.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon has attracted much attention in recent years due to its potential applications in optoelectronic devices, fluorescence sensors, and biological probes. Restriction of intramolecular rotation has been proposed as the cause of this unusual phenomenon. Rational design of AIE luminogens requires quantitative descriptions of its mechanism. 2,3-dicyano-5,6-diphenylpyrazine (DCDPP) with "free" phenyl rings is an AIE active compound, whereas 2,3-dicyanopyrazino [5,6-9,10] phenanthrene (DCPP) with "locked" phenyl rings is not. Quantum chemistry calculations coupled with our thermal vibration correlation function formalism for the radiative and non-radiative decay rates reveal that the radiative decay rates for both DCPP and DCDPP are close to each other for all the temperatures, but the non-radiative decay processes are very different. For DCDPP, the low-frequency modes originated from the phenyl ring twisting motions are strongly coupled with the electronic excited state, which dissipate the electronic excitation energy through mode-mixing (Duschinsky rotation effect), and the non-radiative decay rate strongly increases with temperature. For DCPP, however, such mode-mixing effect is weak and the non-radiative decay rate is insensitive to temperature. These findings rationalize the fact that DCDPP is AIE active but DCPP is not, and are instructive to further development of AIE luminogens.

Abstract:We present an investigation of the ultrafast dynamics of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon fluorene initiated by an intense femtosecond near-infrared laser pulse (810~nm) and probed by a weak visible pulse (405~nm). Using a multichannel detection scheme (mass spectra, electron and ion velocity-map imaging), we provide a full disentanglement of the complex dynamics of the vibronically excited parent molecule, its excited ionic states, and fragments. We observed various channels resulting from the strong-field ionization regime. In particular, we observed the formation of the unstable tetracation of fluorene, above-threshold ionization features in the photoelectron spectra, and evidence of ubiquitous secondary fragmentation. We produced a global fit of all observed time-dependent photoelectron and photoion channels. This global fit includes four parent ions extracted from the mass spectra, 15 kinetic-energy-resolved ionic fragments extracted from ion velocity map imaging, and five photoelectron channels obtained from electron velocity map imaging. The fit allowed for the extraction of 60 lifetimes of various metastable photoinduced intermediates.

Abstract:The duration of laser pulses and the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) play a crucial role in shaping kinetic energy release (KER) spectra. In this study, we performed theoretical calculations on pulse duration-dependent KER spectra, ranging from hundreds to sub-femtoseconds, focusing on the scenario. Our findings reveal a distinct shift in KER peaks from sub-cycle pulses, deviating from the resonance energy. Utilizing two-level perturbation theory, we identify that this shift is attributable to the energy-dependent transition matrix elements. Moreover, our investigation uncovers a notable CEP effect in KER from sub-cycle pulses, arising from interference between counter-rotating and rotating terms within a single ultraviolet (UV) photon transition. To leverage this insight, we propose a novel pump-probe methodology for precise CEP characterization of ultra-short laser pulses. We hope this method would promise advancements in understanding and manipulating ultrafast processes.

Abstract:We report on the dynamics of photodegradation and subsequent recovery of two-photon fluorescence in a dye-doped polymer. The energy dependence suggests that photodegradation is a linear process, while recovery is entropic. Such recovery could be useful to high-intensity devices such as two-photon absorbers, which can be used in many applications.

Abstract:A new regime in the interaction of a two-color (ω,2ω) laser with a nanometer-scale foil is identified, resulting in the emission of extremely intense, isolated attosecond pulses-even in the case of multicycle lasers. For foils irradiated by lasers exceeding the blow-out field strength (i.e., capable of fully separating electrons from the ion background), the addition of a second harmonic field results in the stabilization of the foil up to the blow-out intensity. This is then followed by a sharp transition to transparency that essentially occurs in a single optical cycle. During the transition cycle, a dense, nanometer-scale electron bunch is accelerated to relativistic velocities and emits a single, strong attosecond pulse with a peak intensity approaching that of the laser field.

Abstract:The conformational dynamics of the pyrene excimer play a critical role in its unique fluorescence properties. Yet, the influence of multiple local minima on its excited-state behavior remains underexplored. Using a combination of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and unsupervised machine learning analysis, we have identified and characterized a diverse set of stable excimer geometries in the first excited state. Our analysis reveals that rapid structural reorganization towards the most stable stacked-twisted conformer dominates the excimer’s photophysics, outcompeting radiative relaxation. This conformer, which is primarily responsible for the characteristic red-shifted, structureless fluorescence emission, reconciles experimental observations of long fluorescence lifetimes and emission profiles. These findings provide new insights into the excited-state dynamics of excimers. They may inform the design of excimer-based materials in fields ranging from organic electronics to molecular sensing.

Ultrafast Intrachain Exciton Dynamics in Π -Conjugated Polymers

Abstract:We have used the femtosecond transient photomodulation spectroscopy in a broad spectral range for studying the ultrafast dynamics of the primary photoexcitations in various polymers. An emerging universal picture is presented based on the C2h point group symmetry of the polymer chain, where the electron-electron interaction is dominant. In this picture the 1Bu exciton is the primary photoexcitation. However, the 1Bu exciton may decay within a few hundreds fs to the more stable 'dark' exciton (2Ag) in 'dark' polymers where the photoluminescence (PL) efficiency is extremely low. In contrast, in polymers with high PL emission efficiency, the 1Bu exciton is the lowest excited state, and consequently may show stimulated emission that can be utilized for laser action.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the nonadiabatic subcycle electron dynamics in orthogonally polarized two-color laser fields with comparable intensities. The photoelectron dynamics is simulated by exact solution to the 3D time-dependent Schrödinger equation, and also by two other semiclassical methods, i.e., the quantum trajectory Monte Carlo simulation and the Coulomb-corrected strong field approximation. Through these methods, we identify the underlying mechanisms of the subcycle electron dynamics and find that both the nonadiabatic effects and the Coulomb potential play very important roles. The contribution of the nonadiabatic effects manifest in two aspects, i.e., the nonadiabatic ionization rate and the nonzero initial velocities at the tunneling exit. The Coulomb potential has a different impact on the electrons' trajectories for different relative phases between the two pulses.
Enhanced Excitation and Ionization of H-2(+) by A Single- and Two-Color Intense Laser Pulse

Abstract:We study the enhanced excitation and ionization of H-2(+) by a single- and a two-color intense laser pulse. Our results show that the enhanced ionization in a single-color laser field is closely related to the dominant population of the 1 sigma(g) or 1 sigma(u) state and the corresponding width of their Floquet complex quasienergies. The overall trend of the population in higher excited states, once populated, remains flat as a function of time. Therefore, in the single-color case, the excited states do not contribute directly to the ionization. However, when the H-2(+) is exposed to a two-color laser field, an enhanced excitation effect to higher excited states for H-2(+) at some critical internuclear distance R-c is observed, which contributes greatly to the enhanced ionization of H-2(+) because of their much higher ionization rates compared to those of 1 sigma(g) or 1 sigma(u) states. We also find that the enhanced ionization is sensitive to the relative phase of the two-color laser field. By adjusting the relative phase, one can manipulate the enhanced ionization to occur at some critical internuclear distances. This can help the molecule to survive the enhanced ionization peaks at smaller internuclear distances, which is very useful for those circumstances where the preparation of expanded molecules is needed, e.g., for a more efficient generation of high-order harmonic generation. Our method is based on a numerical solution of the full-dimensional time-dependent Schrodinger equation accurately using a method we recently developed.
