Abstract:High Performance Polymers, Ahead of Print. Polyimide aerogel, presenting an outstanding new material for lightweight protective thermal insulation, has garnered significant attention in the aerospace field. Despite its potential, due to the high production cost of the supercritical drying method used for its preparation, its widespread application is limited. In this research, a series of lightweight polyimide aerogels (F-PIAs, 3,3',4,4'-biphenyl tetracarboxylic dianhydride (s-BPDA) and 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA)) with excellent thermal protection properties were prepared by lyophilization. The findings indicated that F-PIAs (Freeze-dried polyimide aerogels) exhibited comparable physical characteristics to S-PIAs (Supercritical-dried polyimide aerogels), while their preparation cost was even more economical. F-PIAs exhibits excellent flexible and compression behavior (compression strength up to 1.16 MPa, modulus up to 12.8 MPa), which provide a great structural basis for the production of molded thermal insulation protective materials. The average pore diameter of F-PIAs is in the range of 7∼11 nm. The nanoporous structure leads to the gas within the pores of the aerogel producing the Knudsen effect, thereby significantly enhancing the thermal insulation performance of the aerogel. The thermal conductivity of F-PIA-4 (Freeze-dried polyimide aerogels with a solid content of 4%) at room temperature is as low as 0.023 W·m−1·K−1, which is superior to the PIAs (0.043 W·m−1·K−1) prepared by lyophilization in literature. Its thermal diffusion coefficient changes from 0.108 mm2·s−1 to 0.18 mm2·s−1 in the temperature range of 27°C to 200°C, demonstrating good thermal insulation performance at high temperatures. Meanwhile, after heating on a 150°C flat plate for 11 min and 41 s, the surface temperature of F-PIA-4 was only 36.2°C, further verifying its excellent thermal insulation performance. The results of the TGA experiment on F-PIA-4 demonstrated the high-temperature stability of aerogel (Td5% is higher than 523°C, Td10% is higher than 566°C). The exceptional properties of F-PIAs hold significant practical reference value in helping to reduce the manufacturing cost of high-performance aerogel thermal insulation materials, thereby enabling their widespread application in aerospace, military, and civil field.

Abstract:Owing to the unique structural characteristics, aerogel has broad utilization prospects in numerousapplication scenarios such as thermal insulation, electromagnetic interference shielding, adsorption, etc.As one of the most commonly used drying methods in aerogel preparation, freeze-drying avoids surface tension at the gas–liquid interface by constructing a gas–solid interface. However, problems such as relatively low freezing efficiency, aerogel structure destruction,excessive and uncontrollable pore size caused by uncontrolled growth of crystals during freezing processstill severely limit the preparation efficiency and performance of aerogel. In this work,the reported ultrasound-assisted freeze-drying (UAFD) strategy was applied to enhanced the freezing efficiency by cavitation-induced nucleation. Meanwhile, by affecting the secondary nucleation, UAFD strategy produced aerogel with smaller pore size and narrower pore size distribution. At the same time, the pore structure could be tuned by the regulation of ultrasonic power. The thermal insulation, hydrophobicity of polyimide (PI) aerogels and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties of PI-derived carbon aerogels prepared by UAFD strategy were significantly improved. The strategy proposed in this work provides a new path to achieve improvement of aerogel production efficiency and performance through structural regulation. Moreover, it could be extended to the preparation of other types of aerogels.
Mechanically strong and thermally insulating polyimide aerogels by homogeneity reinforcement of electrospun nanofibers

Abstract:High-performance thermal insulating materials are greatly needed in many areas. Polyimide aerogels by freeze-drying method have shown great potential as thermal insulating materials. Improving the mechanical performance of polyimide aerogels, meanwhile without deteriorating their thermal insulating performance, is very significative. In this work, a significant homogeneity reinforcement of polyimide aerogels has been achieved by using electrospun polyimide nanofibers as the reinforcing fillers. Short nanofibers could improve strength and toughness of polyimide aerogels by dispersing stress along the pore wall and nanofibers via mechanical interlocking effect due to the good compatibility between them. Consequently, the nanofiber-reinforced polyimide (NRPI) aerogels exhibit better structural formability and excellent mechanical performance, showing compressive modulus of 3.7 MPa with a density of 54.4 mg cm−3, nearly twice that of neat polyimide aerogel. More importantly, owing to the high porosity and intertwined three-dimensional network, NRPI aerogels exhibit better thermal insulating properties compared with commercial insulating materials, especially at high temperatures. Therefore, the nanofiber reinforced polyimide aerogels with good mechanical performance are promising candidates for thermal insulating applications.

Abstract:Polymer-based aerogels have many uses because they possess excellent mechanical properties, such as high moduli and remarkable fatigue resistances. Freeze drying is an appealing aerogel preparation method because it is simple, green and inexpensive. However, polymer-based aerogels prepared by freeze drying always exhibit inferior mechanical properties compared to those prepared by classic supercritical drying, even if the raw material is polyimide. Herein, we report a novel double-cross-linking strategy to obtain a freeze-dried and robust polyimide/reduce graphene oxide/cobalt (PI/rGO/Co) aerogel with an interdigitated cellular architecture. The double-cross-linking strategy was attributed to hydrogen bonds derived from the graphene oxide (GO sheets) and coordination interactions from the Co ions. The interdigitated cellular architecture is the critical factor for achieving aerogels with low densities, flexibilities, high moduli (0.506 MPa compression modulus, 43% improvement of tensile modulus), and high fatigue resistances (1000 cycles). The as-prepared aerogel could be modified to achieve hydrophobicity with a 146.1 degrees water contact angle. It was also difficult to be ignited and it exhibited excellent heat stability and low thermal conductivities (0.040 W.m(-1.)K(-1) at 25 degrees C; 0.046 W.m(-1.)K(-1) at 100 degrees C).
Super-flexible polyimide nanofiber cross-linked polyimide aerogel membranes for high efficient flexible thermal protection

Abstract:Experimental preparation of lightweight and highly flexible aerogels has been a longstanding challenge, which limits their practical application in flexible thermal protection. Here, polyimide (PI) nanofiber cross-linked polyimide aerogel membranes were designed to achieve high flexibility, strong mechanical properties, and highly efficient heat-insulated performance. By taking full advantage of the perfect chemical compatibility and robust interfacial bonding strength between PI nanofibers and PI aerogel molecular chains, the PI aerogel membranes achieved the significant transformation from brittleness to high flexibility. The results demonstrate the addition of PI nanofibers exhibits significant reinforcement and toughening effect. PI nanofiber cross-linked PI aerogel membranes possess low density of 0.168 g/cm3 and low thermal conductivity of 0.0279 W/mK. Moreover, 20 wt% PI nanofiber cross-linked PI aerogel membranes exhibit high tensile strength of 2.95 MPa, while the tensile strength of pure PI aerogel is 0.27 MPa. The as-prepared PI aerogel membrane exhibited high-temperature flexible thermal protection performance, which made it a candidate for the application in modern technology, military, and aerospace.

Abstract:Maintaining human body temperature is one of the basic needs for living, which requires high‐performance thermal insulation materials to prevent heat exchange with external environment. However, the most widely used fibrous thermal insulation materials always suffer from the heavy weight, weak mechanical property, and moderate capacity to suppress heat transfer, resulting in limited personal cold and thermal protection performance. Here, an ultralight, mechanically robust, and thermally insulating polyimide aerogel is directly synthesized via constructing 3D interlocked curly nanofibrous networks during electrospinning. Controlling the solution/H2O molecule interaction enables the rapid phase inversion of charged jets, while the multiple jets are ejected by regulating charge density of the fluids, thus synergistically allowing numerous curly nanofibers to interlock and crosslink with each other to form porous aerogel structure. The resulted polyimide aerogel integrates the ultralight property with density of 2.4 mg cm−3, extreme temperature tolerance (mechanical robustness over ‐196–300°C), and thermal insulation performance with ultralow thermal conductivity of 22.4 mW m−1 K−1, providing an ideal candidate to keep human thermal comfort under extreme temperature. Abstract:The rapid growth of the aerospace industry presents significant challenges in developing lightweight and flexible thermal protective materials for spacecraft and related equipment. One longstanding challenge has been the preparation of high-thermostable and highly flexible aerogels, which limits their practical application in flexible thermal protection. In this work, through a rational 'chain-sphere' dual-combination structure design, polyimide-silica aerogels with integrated properties of the adjustable aerogel-fiber skeleton structure, robust flexibility and high thermostable have been prepared. By incorporating 2,2-dimethylbenzidine (DMBZ), we achieve a more solid aerogel network. The aerogel membrane retains its original shape without creases or cracks even after undergoing 500 folding and unfolding tests. Additionally, the silicon nanoparticles surrounding the aerogel exhibit superior performance at high temperatures. The unique structure and components of the composite enable it to possess lightweight (0.075–0.11 g/cm −3 ), low thermal shrinkage (300°C∼6 %), excellent thermostability (95 % weight retention at 474°C∼557°C), and promising thermal insulating performance below 600°C. The integrated performances of the aerogel make it suitable for high-temperature thermal protection applications that require both efficient thermal insulation and robust flexibility.

Facile Preparation of Continuous and Porous Polyimide Aerogel Fibers for Multifunctional Applications

Abstract:High-performance aerogel fibers with high porosity, ultralow density and thermal conductivity, and good flexibility are attractive candidates for the next generation of effective thermal insulation, efficient personal thermal management, and other functional applications. However, most previously reported aerogel fibers suffered from either limited working temperatures, weak mechanical properties, or complex manufacturing processes. In the present work, a facile wet-spinning technique combined with freeze-drying was developed to fabricate strong polyimide aerogel fibers (PAFs) based on organo-soluble polyimide. Attributed to the unique "porous core–dense sheath" morphology, the PAFs exhibited excellent mechanical properties with an optimum tensile strength of 265 MPa and an initial modulus of 7.9 GPa at an ultimate elongation of 65%, representing the highest value for aerogel fibers reported so far. Moreover, the PAFs possess high porosity (>80%) and high specific surface area (464 m2 g–1), which render the woven PAF fabrics with excellent thermal insulation properties within a wide temperature range (−190 to 320 °C) and potential applications for thermal insulation under harsh environments. Additionally, a series of functionalized aerogel fibers or their fabrics based on PAFs, including phase-change fabrics with a thermoregulation function and electromagnetic shielding (EMI) textiles with a high EMI SE value, have been successfully fabricated for expanding their potential applications. Konjac glucomannan-based aerogels with excellent thermal stability and flame retardancy for thermal insulation application

Abstract:Biomass aerogels are a promising kind of environment-friendly thermal insulation material. However, the flammability, poor water resistance, and thermal instability of biomass aerogels limit their applications. Herein, freeze-drying and thermal imidization were used to create konjac glucomannan (KGM), boron nitride (BN), and polyimide (PI)-based aerogels with a semi-interpenetrating network structure. The introduction of BN was beneficial to improve the mechanical properties and thermal stability of aerogels. The imidization process of PI improved the hydrophobicity, mechanical property, and flame retardancy of the aerogels. The synergistic effect of PI and BN reduced the peak heat release rate and total heat release rate of KGM-based aerogel by 55.8 % and 35 %, respectively, and endowed aerogel with good self-extinguishing performance. Moreover, the results of thermal conductivity and infrared thermal imaging demonstrated that the aerogels had excellent thermal insulation properties, and could effectively manage thermal energy over a wide range of temperatures. This study provides a simple method for the preparation of heat-insulating aerogel with high fire safety, which has broad application prospects in the field of energy saving and emission reduction.

Abstract:Abstract This study reports the fabrication of a serious of anisotropic composite aerogels comprising polyimide and graphene (PI/G) through a simple and eco‐friendly technique. Poly(amic acid) ammonium salt/graphene dispersion, which was produced through the mixture of poly(amic acid), graphene aqueous dispersion, triethylamine, and water, was utilized in the process of creating PI/G composite aerogels employing unidirectional freezing, freeze‐drying, and thermal imidization. The PI/G aerogels displayed anisotropic mechanical properties, thermal insulation, and electrical conductivity. The PI/G aerogels with an anisotropic microstructure demonstrated notable rigidity and a high compressive modulus (52.7 MPa) along the axial direction, while displaying favorable flexibility and a low modulus (18.2 MPa) along the radial direction. Furthermore, the PI/G aerogel exhibited anisotropic thermal conductivity (axial: 64 mW m −1 K −1 ; radical: 55 mW m −1 K −1 ). These properties enable the PI/G aerogel to have a wider range of potential applications, especially strain sensors. The research presented herein establishes a simple and eco‐friendly strategy for the production of anisotropic PI/G‐based composite aerogels.

Abstract:There has been a growing interest in developing novel thermal insulation materials since the traditional insulation material is unable to manage heat intelligently. Herein, bidirectional anisotropic polyimide/bacterial cellulose (b-PI/BC) aerogels with good structural formability, high mechanical strength, and excellent thermal insulation properties have been prepared via bidirectional freezing technique. Polyimide makes the composite aerogels robust in mechanics, while uniform dispersion of bacterial cellulose in the aerogel can inhibit the shrinkage and retain the structural integrity, leading to higher porosity and lower density, thus reducing heat conduction throughout the whole aerogel. Due to its well-aligned lamellar structure obtained by bidirectional freezing technique, b-PI/BC aerogel exhibits distinct anisotropic thermal insulation behaviors with ultra-low thermal conductivity of 23 mW m−1 K−1 in the radial direction (perpendicular to the lamella) and nearly twice (44 mW m−1 K−1) in the axial direction (parallel to the lamella). The anisotropy of the thermal conductivity can substantially reduce the heat transfer in the radial direction, while helps heat diffusion in-plane to avoid heat localization, which possess remarkable advantages over the random and unidirectional counterparts. Therefore, this anisotropic PI/BC aerogel can serve as a promising heat management material for practical and complex thermal insulation applications.

Abstract:Ultrasound‐assisted freeze‐drying strategy to enhance nanoparticle dispersion in aerogels. Thermal protection materials should possess light weight, excellent thermal insulation, flame retardant and hydrophobic properties. Aerogel are considered a promising thermal protection material due to its high porosity and low density. Among them, nano‐silica/polyimide composite aerogel has been intensively studied as they can solve the problem of fragility of nano‐silica aerogel while ensuring thermal insulation and flame retardant performance. However, the problems of nanoparticle agglomeration and the tedious preparation process remain unsolved. The ultrasound‐assisted freeze‐drying (UAFD) strategy presented in this paper avoids the tedious silica solution preparation process by hydrolyzing silica precursors to achieve good dispersion of silica. This strategy replaces the traditional approach of functionalized modification of silica nanoparticles to inhibit their agglomeration with a new method of nanoparticle dispersion by ultrasound and rapid freezing to lock the dispersed state. The UAFD strategy enables the rapid and efficient preparation of well‐dispersed nano‐silica/polyimide composite aerogels, and the hierarchical pore structure of the composite aerogels is imparted by this facile preparation strategy that cooperates with the co‐regulation capability of the tert‐butanol on the morphology of the ice template. The aerogels have substantially improved thermal insulation, flame retardant, and hydrophobic properties when compared with those prepared by conventional freeze‐drying methods. Highlights Ultrasound‐assisted freeze‐drying (UAFD) enhances nanoparticles dispersion. UAFD and tert‐butanol synergistically prepared hierarchically pore structure. Thermal protection performance of aerogels prepared by UAFD is improved.

Abstract:Thermoregulating textiles (or protective clothing) are highly demanded for both human health and labor productivity especially in hot working environments. It is challenging to balance wearability and thermal insulating property as they usually demand for opposite porosity. Here, learning from the porous structure of polar bear hair, we report a polyimide aerogel fiber obtained by a freeze-spinning technique. A textile woven with such polyimide fiber is thermally insulating, strong and highly stretchable, fire-retardant (or self-extinguishing), and temperature-resistant. Additionally, it can be readily incorporated with other functions such as acid alkali resistance and thermoregulation by surface modification and infiltration of phase change material. All these properties indicate its potential in protective clothing in hot environments. With the versatility and scalability, our approach paves a new way for fabricating smart textiles with well-defined microstructure and multi-functionality by learning from nature.

Abstract:PI aerogel composite was synthesized from 3,3′,4,4′‐ biphenylteracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), 4,4′‐Oxidianiline (ODA), and polyurethane fiber. The composite material was composed of PI aerogel as matrix and fiber as skeleton. The composite exhibited excellent thermal insulation, ultra‐low shrinkage (3.52%), hydrophobic feature (water contact angle: 120°), and favorable thermal stability (Tmax: 517°C). Polyimide PI aerogels possess a rather potential in thermal protection material for aircraft, owing to their low thermal conductivity, high thermal stability, and low bulk density. However, the large shrinkage of pure PI aerogels is still a challenge in the complete preparation process. Herein, a kind of PI hybrid aerogel composite was prepared successfully by introducing polyurethane fiber as the reinforcing agent. The aerogel composite could realize the enhancement for the pure PI aerogels from a micro/macroscopic perspective, ultimately ensuring the ultralow shrinkage rate of 3.52%. Due to the inhibition of the shrinkage characteristic, the aerogel composite obtained achieved excellent thermal insulation, especially retaining a low temperature of 40.7°C despite the hot surface temperature reached up to 150°C. Besides, the lightweight low‐density, exceptional flame resistance, and self‐extinguishing properties were reflected from PI hybrid aerogel composite constructed, including the outstanding hydrophobic feature (water contact angle of 120°). The PI hybrid aerogel composite as prepared may be used for the thermal management of aircraft in a great measure, illustrating the feasible strategy of fabricating PI‐based aerogel composites.

Abstract:Thermal superinsulation materials play a key role in reducing energy consumption. In this article, flexible polyimide aerogel-like films are developed by a facile non-solvent-induced phase separation combined with ambient drying method. The pore structure and insulation properties are well controlled by changing the compositions of the coagulation bath. Polyimide films with macro-nano hierarchical pore structure and uniform nanopores are prepared by adjusting the content of water and alcohol as the non-solvent. The relationship between the insulation performance and textured structure of polyimide was studied. After optimization, the produced film achieved a low thermal conductivity of 0.019 W⋅m-1·K-1 but good tensile strength of 89.6 MPa, compared favorably with literature results. Hence, this article demonstrates that application of the facile phase inversion method to prepare porous polymers can be expanded from desalination or gas separation fields to insulation for energy-saving purposes.

Abstract:Excellent thermal insulating aerogels have broad application prospects in pipeline transportation, aerospace, construction and other fields. However, defects in thermal stability and mechanical are the main factors limiting their use to special environments. In this work, a novel polyimide composite aerogel is successfully synthesized through 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) functionalized clay halloysite nanotubes (FHal) as inorganic enhancement phase and uniformly embedded in polyimide (PI) aerogels. Functionalization can increase the interfacial compatibility between clay inorganic phase and polyimide acid. The results indicated that FHal with high aspect ratio interacts with PI to form a three-dimensional network structure. The FHal/PI composite aerogels had low shrinkage (21.9%–30.79%), low bulk densities (65.285–71.464 mg/cm3), low thermal conductivities (39.18–42.57 mW/(m·K)), high thermal stability (onset of decomposition above 520 °C) and excellent mechanical property (1.14 MPa, 2.62 times of pure PI aerogel). Therefore, FHal/PI composite aerogels can be used as a promising thermal management material for practical and complex insulation applications.

Abstract:Application of aerogel fibers in thermal insulating garments have sparked a substantial interest. However, achieving a high porosity and low thermal conductivity for aerogel fibers remain challenging, despite the innovative designs of porous structure. Herein, we fabricated lightweight and super-thermal insulating polyimide (PI) aerogel fibers via freeze-spinning by using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a pore regulator. The high affinity of PVA with water enables it to accelerate the ice crystal nucleation, adjust pore formation, and construct a controllable porous structure of PI aerogel fiber. The as-fabricated PI aerogel fiber has a considerable reduced pore size, high porosity (95.6%), improved flexibility and mechanical strength, and can be woven into fabrics. The PI aerogel fabric exhibits low thermal conductivity and excellent thermal insulation in a wide range of temperature (from − 196 to 300 °C). Furthermore, the PI aerogel fabrics can be easily functionalized to expand their applications, such as in intelligent temperature regulation and photothermal conversion. These results demonstrate that the aerogel fibers/fabric are promising materials for next-generation textile materials for personal thermal management.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Ideally, excellent heat-insulating material should have low thermal conductivity, low density, excellent resistance to high and low temperatures and good mechanical properties. But few materials can meet all the above requirements at the same time. Take polyimide (PI) aerogel as an example. Although it has the advantages of lightweight, good mechanical properties and excellent temperature resistance, the value of its thermal conductivity is often unsatisfactory. To solve this problem, a series of mesoporous polyimide aerogels using aminated SiO2 nanoparticles as cross-linker have been prepared. By changing the content of SiO2 and the synthetic methods, the key properties of PI aerogels such as the density and thermal conductivity were effectively tuned. These aerogels have low density, high specific modulus, significantly low thermal conductivity (∼20 mW m−1 K−1), and excellent high temperature resistance. Their general properties (shrinkage, density, compression performances, specific surface area, pore size distribution, high temperature resistance) and their application potential as lightweight, high-performance thermal insulation materials in harsh environments are discussed.
