Abstract:In order to suppress the phase distortion caused by fading in phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer ( -OTDR) system, a new multi-resolution phase compensation algorithm is proposed in this paper. When the intensity of the beat signal approaches the system floor noise, the phase variation will gradually follow the uniform distribution, and fading occurs. The fading region in the spatiotemporal phase plane would be determined subsequently by synthesizing the differential section intensity. The redundancy and local correlation of the phase plane is thoroughly utilized by the patch searching algorithm in multi-resolution. Hence, the marked fading region would be compensated by the fading free region in the phase plane. The proposed method has been proved and analyzed that the fading can be effectively suppressed in the -OTDR system in the experiment. The fading region can be accurately compensated whether the disturbance exists. The disturbance can be restructured effectively with SNR of 31.2 dB. Furthermore, the strain resolution was achieved to 7.685 Hz. Therefore, the proposed method provides a promising approach to realizing fading elimination without additional structure in the -OTDR system.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel interference fading suppression method for phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) using space-division multiplexed (SDM) pulse probes in few-mode fiber. The SDM probes consist of multiple different modes, and three spatial modes (LP01, LP11a and LP11b) are used in this work for proof of concept. Firstly, the Rayleigh backscattering light of different modes is experimentally characterized, and it turns out that the waveforms of Phi-OTDR traces of distinct modes are all different from each other. Thanks to the spatial difference of fading positions of distinct modes, multiple probes from spatially multiplexed modes can be used to suppress the interference fading in Phi-OTDR. Then, the performances of the Phi-OTDR systems using single probe and multiple probes are evaluated and compared. Specifically, statistical analysis shows that both fading probabilities over fiber length and time are reduced significantly by using multiple SDM probes, which verifies the significant performance improvement on fading suppression. The proposed novel interference fading suppression method does not require complicated frequency or phase modulation, which has the advantages of simplicity, good effectiveness and high reliability.

Abstract:Aiming at the frequency drift of the laser and acousto-optic modulator in the traditional phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometric ( $Phi $ -OTDR), a $Phi $ -OTDR system based on optical synchronous heterodyne is proposed and demonstrated. The method of optical synchronization heterodyne is used to follow the beat frequency signal to eliminate the interference of frequency shift fluctuation in the phase information and the ubiquitous residual frequency before the optical path heterodyne. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is more than 31.4 dB on a 10 km sensing optical fiber with a probe light pulses of 5 kHz repetition rate and 100 ns pulse width. The error between the demodulated signal amplitude and the actual signal amplitude is less than 1%, and the maximum harmonic amplitude is about 28.3 dB less than the actual signal amplitude. While improving the real-time performance, this research greatly improves the demodulation characteristics of the system, which is of great significance to the advancement of the practical process of the phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometric system.

Abstract:A real-time detection and self-control phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (φ-OTDR) distributed sensor system is demonstrated. The system software can get the real-time data stream to detect the disturbance and self-control the Mach-Zehnder electro-optical modulator (MZEOM). In this way, the system can operate continuously and compensate the drift of the MZEOM automatically.

Abstract:A phase demodulation algorithm in phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry ( $\Phi $ -OTDR) with self-interference balance detection is proposed. With a simple differentiate-and-cross-multiply (DCM) operation to acquire the perturbation waveform, and a further second-order operation to compensate the amplitude fluctuation of the phase, the phase can be extracted accurately. The self-interference balance detection structure can equivalently achieve the function of dual-pulse detection, but avoid the negative impact of the common-mode noise and the difference between the dual pulses on the demodulation. In experiment, several types of vibrations are retrieved correctly under the condition of single channel and low sampling rate, which demonstrates the validity of this demodulation approach.

Abstract:We report a numerical analysis and direct measurement of the phase fading effect in phase-sensitive OTDR (Phi-OTDR) acoustic sensors. By demodulating the acoustic-induced phase information using a dual-pulse heterodyne Phi-OTDR, we show that the amplitude of the phase signal appears with ripple-like fluctuations over the fiber distance, even though the applied phase modulation has a constant amplitude. A generalized interference model for a Phi-OTDR acoustic sensor is presented, which identifies that this phase fading effect is mostly contributed by the random phase retardant (rather than the scattering amplitude) introduced through the distributed Rayleigh scattering process. Our analysis provides insight on the potential suppression of the phase fading noise in a phase-retrieved Phi-OTDR system. Abstract:A frequency division multiplexing optical time domain reflectometry (FDM-OTDR) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A phase modulator is employed to convert single frequency laser to multiple frequencies where four frequencies are adopted as the probe. Coherent detection between the backscattered Rayleigh signals of the four-frequency probe light pulses propagating in fiber under test (FUT) and original single frequency local oscillator (LO) only generates two intermediate frequencies (IFs) as the result of direct synthesizing of the same IFs. The two dominant IFs are processed by parallel computing method. Experimental results show that compared with conventional C-OTDR the FDM-OTDR is four times faster in fading noise reduction and can also bring a 1.9dB single way dynamic range (SWDR) enhancement.

Abstract:The detected frequency response range of phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry is limited by the sensing fiber length. In this paper, we demonstrate an amplitude modulated pulses based phase-sensitive OTDR to detect vibrations with high spatial resolution and wide frequency response range. The amplitude modulated pulses consisting of narrow pulses and background light are injected into the sensing fiber as probe light. The Rayleigh backscattering generated by the background light interferes at the detection end, presenting a phase sensitive response to external vibrations. The Rayleigh backscattering of narrow pulses are tracked to locate vibrations. The frequency information is obtained from the frequency domain analysis of the interference signal. The system can realize high frequency response with low repetition rate of probe pulses by one-end detection.

Abstract:A simple and effective interference-fading tolerant method for phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry(Φ-OTDR) using optimal peak-seeking is proposed. This method can reconstruct the vibration signal with high fidelity under the premise of using only an ordinary single-mode sensing fiber without changing the structure of the traditional Φ-OTDR system. Based on the data after interference suppression, we applied different machine learning models to recognize the invasive events category. The promising results show potential applications of Φ-OTDR equipment and future implementation with machine learning algorithms.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) realizes quantitative measurement of the dynamic strain employing phase demodulation. Unfortunately, it is difficult to measure the large dynamic strain with the conventional Φ-OTDR due to the restriction of the unwrapping algorithm. In this work, an approach based on two-wavelength probe is proposed and demonstrated to improve the measurable range of the dynamic strain in Φ-OTDR. By utilizing the difference between the two phases acquiring with two different lasers, the large dynamic strain can be recovered. In experiments, dynamic strains with peak values from 10.32 uɛ to 24.08 uɛ are retrieved accurately, which cannot be recovered with the conventional Φ-OTDR. Moreover, the tunable sensitivity is also demonstrated through adjusting the wavelengths of the probe. With the increment of the wavelength interval from 9.06 nm to 23.06 nm, the normalized sensitivity increases from 0.4 to 1 accordingly. That agrees well with the theoretical prediction. Foreseeably, the proposed method will extend the scope of application fields for Φ-OTDR, which requires large dynamic strain recognition.

Abstract:The phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) has been developed rapidly as a fully fiber-optic distributed vibration sensing technology. However, the demodulation technique based on the phase term would induce a serious false alarm problem due to the signal fading effect. An effective method to suppress fading-induced false alarms in the Phi-OTDR system is proposed, which is based on the suppression mask and numerical relationship between phase and amplitudes of Rayleigh backscattering. The performance of the proposed method has been experimentally demonstrated in both laboratory environment and in-field situation test. Without any hardware addition in a traditional Phi-OTDR equipment, false alarms rate can be reduced from 4.81% to 0.15%, whereas low missing alarms rate can be achieved at the same time. In-field results show that this work provides a low-cost solution to enhance the performance for real-life engineering application of the phase-discrimination Phi-OTDR system. Abstract:The demand for phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR), which is capable of reconstructing external disturbance accurately, is increasing. However, φ-OTDR suffers from fading where Rayleigh backscattering traces (RBS) have low amplitude and may be lower than the noise floor. Therefore, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is reduced. In conventional coherent φ-OTDR, an acoustic optical modulator (AOM), which consists of an RF driving source and an acousto-optic crystal, is commonly used to generate optical pulses and frequency shifts. Since RF driving and external modulation signals come from an independent oscillation source, every intermediate frequency (IF) trace has a different phase bias. Therefore, it is difficult to average the IF signals directly for noise reduction. In this paper, a coherent φ-OTDR system based on phase-locking structure was proposed. This structure provided a clock homologous carrier signal, a modulation signal and a data acquisition (DAQ) trigger signal. Then, moving average methods were taken on IF signals before phase demodulating to reduce the overall noise floor of the system. This new φ-OTDR is more tolerant to fading, which can provide higher accuracy for vibration reconstruction. The frequency response range of vibration was as low as 1Hz, and a 25dB improvement of SNR was achieved.

Abstract:We propose a novel method to control the electro-optic modulator (EOM) applied in the phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (ϕ-OTDR) distributed sensor system, which uses the data of the OTDR curves rather than applying an independent control module. We explain the relationship between the accumulation value of the OTDR curve and the EOM's extinction ratio, and utilize this relationship to feedback control the EOM. The experimental results show that it can compensate the drift of the EOM, and make the modulator run with a high extinction ratio for a long time. And this method can also ratify a small jump of the EOM's bias point.

Abstract:In the past decade, an increasing number of studies of double-pulse ϕ -OTDR systems have been reported, but so far, there are no studies specifically analyzing the influences of double pulses on system performance. In this paper, we construct a theoretical model of the double-pulse ϕ -OTDR system, analyze the interference process of the system theoretically, and make conjectures on spatial resolution and demodulation range. On the basis, we build a double-pulse ϕ -OTDR experimental setup based on Sagnac balanced interferometer. The feasibility of the proposed theory is verified by experiments altering the probe pulse parameters and localizing two-point disturbances at different frequencies. The results also indicate when pulse width is greater than the pulse interval, this system offers more accurate positioning capabilities and a continuous demodulation range with high fidelity. The conclusions provide a reference for the selection of appropriate double-pulse parameters for similar systems, and the theoretical model offers a methodological suggestion for exploring other types of double pulses or even multi-pulse systems.

Abstract:Phase-measuring phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) has been widely used for the distributed acoustic sensing. However, the demodulated phase signals are generally noisy due to the laser frequency drift, laser phase noise, and interference fading. These issues are usually addressed individually. In this paper, we propose to address them simultaneously using supervised learning. We first use numerical simulations to generate the corresponding noisy differential phase signals for the given acoustic signals. Then we use the generated acoustic signals and noises together with some real noise data to train an end-to-end convolutional neutral network (CNN) for the acoustic signal enhancement. Three experiments are conduct to evaluate the performance of the proposed signal enhancement method. After enhancement, the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the recovered PZT vibration signals is improved from 13.4 dB to 42.8 dB, while the average scale-invariant signal-to-distortion ratio (SI-SDR) of the recovered speech signals is improved by 7.7 dB. The results show that, the proposed method can well suppress the noise and signal distortion caused by the laser frequency drift, laser phase noise, and interference fading, while recover the acoustic signals with high fidelity.

Abstract:Optical pulse coding phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry ( -OTDR) sends a series of pulses into the sensing fiber to enhance signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). And the spatial resolution is determined by the subpulse duration. The current challenges in optical pulse coding -OTDR include long measurement time, complex coding design, and intricate modulation process. In this paper, pulse intensity coding and mismatched filtering is introduced, which could reach the theoretical measurement time determined by the fiber length. Additionally, it also simplifies coding design and modulation process. In order to obtain satisfactory decoding results, the least-squares criterion is used to design the mismatched filter. Experimental result demonstrates a 6.6 dB improvement in the SNR of the demodulated signal using a 10-bit coding pulse.
