Abstract:By using narrow infrared (IR) optical beams, optical wireless communication (OWC) system can realize ultra-high capacity and high-privacy data transmission. However, due to the point-to-point connection approach, a high accuracy localization system and beam-steering antenna (BSA) are required to steer the signal beam to user terminals. In this paper, we proposed an indoor beam-steering IR OWC system with high accuracy and calibration-free localization ability by employing a coaxial frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system. In the meantime, benefitting from the mm-level ranging accuracy of the LiDAR system, a useful approach to assess the feasibility of the link alignment between beam-steering antenna and users is first demonstrated. With the assistance of the LiDAR system, we experimentally achieved the localization of user terminals with a 0.038-degree localization accuracy and on-off keying (OOK) downlink error-free transmission of 17 Gb/s in free space at a 3-m distance is demonstrated. The highest transmission data rate under the forward error correction (FEC) criterion (Bit error rate (BER) <3.8×103) can reach 24 Gb/s.

Abstract:Optical wireless communication (OWC) using line-of-sight connections has great application potential for indoor scenes due to its advantages of high data transmission speed and privacy. Based on the modulation format of non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK), a data rate of 12 Gbit/s per channel can be realized with high sensitivity through 3.1 m free space when the detected optical power is low. The system is proved to be a flexible link with high-speed communication for mobile terminals in a limited space.

Abstract:The current RF wireless communication spectrum resources are facing significant scarcity, which hampers their ability to support the requirements for ultra-high data rates and ultra-low latency. Laser Diodes (LD) based optical wireless communication (OWC) has emerged as a potential alternative technology that has garnered considerable attention. OWC utilizes the abundant spectrum of light and offers several advantages, including rich bandwidth, strong security, and high trans-mission rates. In this paper, we propose an automatic axis-aligned high-speed optical wireless communication system based on laser diode. Using the camera and the 2D steering, we demonstrate a mobile real-time OWC system over a distance of 0.8 m and a field angle of ±10°. This system is based on the 10 Gigabit Ethernet protocol and can consistently deliver TCP data transmission at a rate of 9.36 Gbps.

Abstract:Infrared optical wireless communication system can achieve ultrahigh capacity and high privacy data transmission. However, for using narrow infrared laser beam as carrier to transmit signal, the high-speed data transmission can only be achieved by point-to-point connection. With the rapid number increasement of consumer electronic devices, such connection method puts a heavy burden on the number of transmitters. Thus, the transmitting end with the point-to-multipoint capability or multi-user accessibility is required. In this paper, we present a multi-user accessible indoor infrared optical wireless communication system employing passive diffractive optics based on a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA). Multiple beams can be generated in a point-to-multipoint scheme by using VIPA-based beam-steering antenna (BSA). On the other hand, by tuning wavelength of laser source, fast 2D steering of multiple beams with the same steering trajectory is supported, which can be used for user ends with changing locations. In the experiment, 5 beams are generated by utilizing only one transmitter. All five beams can realize 12.5 Gb/s on-off-keying (OOK) data rate transmission. Free-space optical wireless transmission at 3.6-m communication distance is demonstrated for system performance verification and evaluation. a total 3.44°×7.9° scanning field of view of five beams is achieved.

Abstract:We demonstrate a hybrid solid-state beam scanner based on 32-channel silicon nitride optical switch with the assistance of transmission blazed grating. The optical switch exhibits rather low power consumption of 7.2 mW/π. Besides, end-fire antennas offer high optical efficiency with less reflection. Non-mechanical two-dimensional beam steering with range of 14.32° × 9.94° and beam divergence of <0.1° is achieved by wavelength tuning and onchip optical path switching. The proposed system eliminates complex control and time-consuming array phase calibration, providing a flexible, scalable and effective solution for all solid-state coaxial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology.

Abstract:Beam-steered infrared (IR) light communication has gained tremendous attention as one of the solutions of congested wireless communication traffic. High performance active beam-steering devices play a crucial role in data allocation and exchange. Conventional beam-steering devices such as spatial light modulator (SLM) and micro-electrical mechanical system (MEMS) mirror and the current emerging nonmechanical beam-steering metasurface-based devices are challenging to realize a large tunable steering angle beyond several degrees, which significantly hinders the spatial application of optical wireless communications (OWC). Herein, an angle-magnified liquid crystal (LC) metadevice consisting of LC metasurfaces and a liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) is proposed to realize active beam steering with a tunable large field of view (FOV). Based on the angle-magnified tunable LC metadevice, an intelligent bidirectional high-speed OWC system is experimentally demonstrated, achieving an actively enlarged FOV of 20° × 20°, with a data rate of 200 Gbps over the S/C/L band for both uplink and downlink transmission over a propagation distance of 1.5 m in free space. The proposed OWC system opens a new avenue for the future high performance wireless data transmission.

Abstract:We built a full-duplex high-speed optical wireless communication (OWC) system based on high-bandwidth micro-size devices, for which micro-LED and VCSEL arrays are implemented to establish downlink and uplink, respectively. The high-capacity downlink based on a single-pixel quantum dot (QD) micro-LED can reach a data rate of 2.74 Gbps with adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). VCSEL-based line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) uplinks are designed with lens-free receiving functions for a 2.2-m communication distance. Experimental results have been demonstrated and confirmed that both downlink and uplinks are capable of providing sufficient bandwidth for a multi-gigabit OWC. Besides, the lens-free uplink receiver can alleviate requirements for aligning and improve the mobility of the transmitter. The VCSELs implemented for both systems work with low driving currents of 140-mA and 190-mA under consideration of the human eye safety. For non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK), both uplinks can achieve 2.125 Gbps with bit-error-rate (BER) lower than the forward error correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8×10-3 for Ethernet access.

A Photon-Counting Micro-LED Array Based Indoor Optical Wireless Communication System: Design and Experiment

Abstract:In this paper, a 450 nm blue GaN micro-LED array based photon-counting optical wireless communication (OWC) system over 50 metres indoor corridor environment is designed and experimentally demonstrated. As a high luminous efficiency device, the 80 μm×80 μm micro-LED array is adopted. Moreover, we develop a poisson shot-noise limited DC-biased optical-single-carrier frequency-domain-equalization (DCO-SC-FDE) method to overcome the multipath impact. Quantitatively, under 50 metres indoor corridor channel, the low energy OWC link down to -78.6 dBm received optical power with data rate of 1.0 Mbps and bit error rate (BER) of 8.8×10 -4 can be achieved. The good BER performance is underneath 3.8×10 -3 FEC limit, presenting its feasibility for long-range indoor corridor links. Furthermore, the proposed scheme provides significant performance improvements over a recent reported photon-counting system [1].

Abstract:We demonstrate a fully solid-state beam scanner that incorporates a Si3N4 photonic integrated switch array, a collimator lens, and a lithographically patterned diffraction grating. The off-chip components enable nearly circular output beams under the reduced system complexity. By manipulating the optical switch array and tuning the input wavelength, two-dimensional beam steering with $32\times23$ = 736 resolvable spots across a $14.3^{\circ }\times 9.9^{\circ }$ field of view (FOV) is realized. Furthermore, the coherent ranging within 18 m is demonstrated experimentally by utilizing the triangular frequency modulation. The tested results validate the feasibility of the proposed beam scanner, which might offer a flexible, scalable, and easily-implemented solution for the solid-state frequency modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fully packaged 10-λ WDM integrated module based on visible light laser diodes. A data-rate of 110.79Gbps can be achieved in 17.5cm free-space and 1.5m fiber link. Abstract:In the coming Industry 4.0, there is a long-standing challenge to transfer real-time broadband data (e.g., video monitoring data) among machines. Optical wireless communication (OWC), which can easily carry tens of gigabit/s data, is a promising technology but suffering from non-line-of-sight (NLOS) limitation. In the NLOS scenario, the power of diffused light is heavily attenuated while the diffuse-induced multi-path effect suppresses the band-width of received signals. In this article, the diffuse light reflected off a rough surface (e.g., ceilings or walls) can be focused at a target receiver with an average 18-dB-power-enhancement. A record 40-Gbit/s >80°-coverage beam-steered NLOS OWC system enabled by the proposed diffuse reflection focusing (DRF) is experimentally demonstrated over a diffused 25-cm free-space link. The fast-focusing transmission matrix (TM) algorithm, which takes only 513 iterations to do the focusing, is introduced to make the DRF technique more practical for daily applications. The low-cost intensity-modulation/direct-detection (IM-DD) transmission scheme and the simple on-off keying (OOK) signal are selected to support low-cost applications. All these features exhibit its great potential for high-speed indoor wireless communications, especially in the scenarios of Industry 4.0.

Abstract:To develop an indoor optical wireless communication (OWC) system, both the system complexity/cost and data rate need to be taken into consideration. In this Letter, a cost-efficient half-duplex OWC system for photonic home area network applications is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A low-cost Fabry-Perot laser diode is proposed to be employed as both the downlink receiver (Rx) and uplink transmitter at the user side. Enabled by the Fabry-Perot transceiver, the indoor transmission of 10 Gbit/s four-level pulse-amplitude-modulation signal for both downlinks and uplinks is experimentally achieved over a 1.7 km single-mode fiber and 1.1 m free space. Moreover, the proposed scheme also enables us to operate an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal. The bit error rate levels of multi-gigabit OFDM data for both downlinks and uplinks over a 10 h measurements are all under a 7% forward error correction limit of 3.8×10-3, which indicates that the proposed system is robust and, thus, can provide a promising solution for high-speed low-cost home area OWC networks.

Abstract:Vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) array is increasingly integrated in consumer electronic devices as light sources for biometrics and interaction between terminals. In this study, we proposed a high-speed multi-user optical wireless communication (OWC) method based on a near-infrared VCSEL array, and then experimentally demonstrated a two-user quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system in a typical indoor environment over a 2-m link. The measured 3-dB bandwidth is around 1.02 GHz for both links, then the maximum sum rate reaches up to 2.7 Gbps for two users with bit-error-rate (BER) of 0 and 3.2x10(-3) respectively. The designed VCSEL-based QAM-OFDMA OWC system depicts the feasibility of potential scenarios for the interactive information transfer between terminals.

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated a constant envelope linear frequency modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CE-LFM-OFDM) signal by employing an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal to phase modulate the linear frequency modulation (LFM) carrier. The experimental verification was conducted in the photonic-based integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system working at 94.5 GHz. In our system, a 10-km optical fiber and a 1-m free space transmission are incorporated, achieving seamless fiber-wireless networks. As a result, we achieved data rates ranging from 8 to 15.4 Gbit/s and range resolution ranging from 1.5 to 7.5 cm, respectively.
