Abstract:Biomass conversion offers an efficient approach to alleviate the energy and environmental issues. Electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has attracted tremendous attention in the latest few years for the mild synthesis conditions and high conversion efficiency to obtain 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA), but there still remain problems such as limited yield, short cycle life, and ambiguous reaction mechanism. Despite many reviews highlighting a variety of electrocatalysts for electrochemical oxidation of HMF, a detailed discussion of the structural modulation of catalyst and the underlying catalytic mechanism is still lacking. We herein provide a comprehensive summary of the recent development of electrochemical oxidation of HMF to FDCA, particularly focusing on the mechanism studies as well as the advanced strategies developed to regulate the structure and optimize the performance of the electrocatalysts, including heterointerface construction, defect engineering, single-atom engineering, and in situ reconstruction. Experimental characterization techniques and theoretical calculation methods for mechanism and active site studies are elaborated, and challenges and future directions of electrochemical oxidation of HMF are also prospected. This review will provide guidance for designing advanced catalysts and deepening the understanding of the reaction mechanism beneath electrochemical oxidation of HMF to FDCA.

Abstract:This review provides a deeper understanding of mechanism for electrochemical oxidation of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), the design of electrocatalyst and reactor, and points out the possible important development orientation, which is expected to promote the economical and efficient electrochemical conversion of biomass for industrial applications. The conversion of biomass is a favorable alternative to the fossil energy route to solve the energy crisis and environmental pollution. As one of the most versatile platform compounds, 5‐hydroxymethylfural (HMF) can be transformed to various value‐added chemicals via electrolysis combining with renewable energy. Here, the recent advances in electrochemical oxidation of HMF, from reaction mechanism to reactor design are reviewed. First, the reaction mechanism and pathway are summarized systematically. Second, the parameters easy to be ignored are emphasized and discussed. Then, the electrocatalysts are reviewed comprehensively for different products and the reactors are introduced. Finally, future efforts on exploring reaction mechanism, electrocatalysts, and reactor are prospected. This review provides a deeper understanding of mechanism for electrochemical oxidation of HMF, the design of electrocatalyst and reactor, which is expected to promote the economical and efficient electrochemical conversion of biomass for industrial applications.

Mechanistic Study on Electro-Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural and Water Molecules Via Operando Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Coupled with an Fe3+ Probe

Abstract:Electrocatalytic oxidation of biomass such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a green route to produce value-added chemicals. However, in-depth understanding of the electrocatalytic process is still lacking. Herein, the mechanism of HMF electro-oxidation was studied by operando surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) coupled with an Fe3+ probe. A multicomponent platform consisting of titanium plates integrated with a gold film and uniform nickel, cobalt and copper nanoparticles (NPs) was employed as an electrode as well as a SERS substrate, enabling operando SERS study on the electrocatalytic process with simultaneous evaluation on cata-lytic activity and visualization on the variations of active sites. Fe3+ was intentionally added into the electrolyte as a probe to correlate the nature of active sites with catalytic activity and product selectivity in virtue of its strong interaction with the active sites of the electrocatalysts. Electrodes integrated with Ni and Cu NPs exhibited excellent HMF oxidation performance but their activity were suppressed by adding 1 ppm Fe3+. Conversely, the activity towards water oxidation was significantly enhanced by Fe3+ addition. Fe3+ inhibits the oxidation of Ni2+ to Ni3+ and promotes the formation of more CuO and CuIII. CuIII is better active sites for water oxidation. The presence of Fe3+ also inhibits the transformation of Co3+ to Co4+, but it has no pronounced effects on HMF oxidation performance. A highest 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid yield (94.0%) and a maximum HMF conversion (98%) are obtained from the electrode integrated with Cu NPs at a potential of 1.47 V. HMF oxidation on Cu NPs follows the aldehyde oxidation pathway, which is not affected by Fe3+ addition. This work could afford a feasible route to explore mechanisms of electrocatalytic processes.

Abstract:Because of depleting fossil-fuel reserves, together with the impacts of climate change, alternative eco-friendly production of high-value chemicals and renewables is needed. Biomass feedstock is of particular research interest. 5-Hydroxymethylfural (HMF) is a versatile precursor that can be converted to high-value chemicals via electrolysis. Reduction generates precursors for ethers, ketones, polyurethanes, polyesters, and polyethers, e.g., 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (DHMF) and 2,5-dimethyletrahydrofuran (DHMTHF), together with high-energy-density premium biofuels, e.g., 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), 2,5-hexanedione (HD) and 5,5′-bis(hydroxymethyl) hydrofuroin (BHH). Oxidation HMF yields valuable chemical products, including 2,5-diformyl furan (DFF), 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furan carboxylic acid (HMFCA), 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA), and maleic acid (MA) that are precursors/intermediates for the polymer industry and chemical/pharmaceutical production(s). In this review, we 1) report a comparative summary of the electrocatalytic refinery of HMF, both electro-oxidation and electroreduction pathways, 2) appraise advances in HMF electroreduction reaction (HRR) and HMF electro-oxidation reaction (HOR), 3) assess reaction pathways and mechanisms, 4) establish a design for electrocatalysts including selection of metal materials, design of the geometric structure, and electronic structural modifications to boost HRR and HOR activity and selectivity, 5) evaluate the impact of reaction parameters including pH, electrolyte composition, applied potential, and initial substrate concentration on HRR and HOR, and 6) provide a prospect on future electrochemical refinement of HMF. We conclude that an improved understanding of reaction conditions is needed to practically boost selectivity and activity for the electrochemical refinement of HMF. Findings will benefit in design for electrochemistry and eco-friendly chemistry in generating fine chemicals and, therefore, are of interest to researchers and manufacturers.

Abstract:2,5‐bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) derived from 5‐Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) through a hydrogenation process has extensive applications in the production of resins, polymers, and artificial fibers. However, screening out the candidate and then modulating the active site to optimize the catalyst for high yield of BHMF are currently insufficient. In this study, Gibbs free energy diagrams of the reduction of HMF on 13 metals were presented, along with the identification of the rate‐determining step (RDS) with the highest reaction barrier for each metal. We attempted to construct a volcano plot for HMFRR reaction. Additionally, a strategy was proposed to adjust the reaction barriers of RDS by combining two appropriate metals. Further experiments confirmed that Pb with the lowest energy barrier exhibited the highest HMF conversion (BHMF selectivity) among single metals. The modified catalyst by doping Ag on Pb, further boosted the HMF conversion (BHMF selectivity) from 42.1% (59.4%) to 80.8% (80.9%), respectively. These results provide an approach to rationally design and construct the catalyst system for efficient conversion of HMF.

Abstract:The catalytic transformation of bio-derived compounds, specifically 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), into value-added chemicals may provide sustainable alternatives to crude oil and natural gas-based products. HMF can be obtained from fructose and successfully converted to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) by an environmentally friendly organic electrosynthesis performed in an ElectraSyn reactor, using cost-effective and sustainable graphite (anode) and stainless-steel (cathode) electrodes in an undivided cell, eliminating the need for conventional precious metal electrodes. In this work, the electrocatalysis of HMF is performed by using green solvents such as acetonitrile, γ-valerolactone, as well as PolarClean, which is used in electrocatalysis for the first time. The reaction parameters and the synergistic effects of the TEMPO catalyst and 2,6-lutidine base are explored both experimentally and through computation modeling. The molecular design and synthesis of a size-enlarged C3 -symmetric tris-TEMPO catalyst are also performed to facilitate a sustainable reaction work-up through nanofiltration. The obtained performance is then compared with those obtained by heterogeneous TEMPO alternatives recovered by using an external magnetic field and microfiltration. Results show that this new method of electrocatalytic oxidation of HMF to DFF can be achieved with excellent selectivity, good yield, and excellent catalyst recovery.
Facet effect on the reconstructed Cu-catalyzed electrochemical hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) towards 2,5-bis(hydroxymethy)furan (BHMF)

Abstract:The electrochemical hydrogenation of HMF to BHMF is an elegant alternative to the conventional thermocatalytic route for the production of high-value-added chemicals from biomass resources. In virtue of the wide potential window with promising Faradic efficiency (FE) towards BHMF, Cu-based electrode has been in the center of investigation. However, its structure-activity relationship remains ambiguous and its intrinsic catalytic activity is still unsatisfactory. In this work, we develop a two-step oxidation-reduction strategy to reconstruct the surface atom arrangement of the Cu foam (CF). By combination of multiple quasi-situ/in-situ techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the critical factor that governs the reaction is demonstrated to be facet effect of the metallic Cu crystal: Cu(110) facet accounts for the most favorable surface with enhanced chemisorption with reactants and selective production of BHMF, while Cu(100) facet might trigger the accumulation of the by-product 5,5′-bis(hydroxymethy)hydrofurion (BHH). With the optimized composition of the facets on the reconstructed Cu(OH) 2 -ER/CF, the performance could be noticeably enhanced with a BHMF FE of 92.3% and HMF conversion of 98.5% at a potential of −0.15 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE) in 0.1 M KOH solution. This work sheds light on the incomplete mechanistic puzzle for Cu-catalyzed electrochemical hydrogenation of HMF to BHMF, and provides a theoretical foundation for further precise design of highly efficient catalytic electrodes.

Abstract:Platform molecules from lignocellulosic biomass, such as levulinic acid (LA), furfural (FF), and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), hold great potentials as precursors to various fuels and high-value compounds through catalytic hydrogenation. However, the existing thermochemical conversions of these carbonyl-containing short-chain organics such as thermal catalytic hydrogenation involve energy-intensive and expensive processes. Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) emerges as an environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and safe process. The ECH of these organics can contribute to mitigating fossil-energy dependencies, fostering sustainable energy production, and yielding socio-economic benefits. ECH of these organics are thus intriguing, but there is a need to objectively evaluate this field. This review summarizes the product outcomes and critical reaction parameters (e.g., electrode materials, temperatures, electrolyte compositions) associated with ECH of LA, FF, and HMF. Emphasis is placed on the mechanisms related to the varying substrates. Special attention was paid to the correlations of catalytic performance with catalyst structures. After a thorough literature survey, strategies for catalyst design are discussed to enhance selectivity by promoting desired product formation and suppressing competing reactions. Moreover, current challenges, unresolved issues, and future perspectives on ECH of LA, FF, and HMF are proposed. It is expected that this work will afford useful information on the synthesis of electrocatalysts for electrochemical conversions of biomass.

Abstract:The utilization and development of biomass resources is an efficient solution to mitigate the fossil energy crisis. Based on the advantages of mild reaction conditions, rapid reaction, and high conversion, the synthesis of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) by the electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMFOR) has attracted considerable attention. This review will summarize the recent advances of HMFOR to FDCA, including the reaction pathway and mechanism, as well as the catalytic performance of various heterogeneous electrocatalysts. The challenges and prospects for HMFOR are also focused on. Finally, it is expected that this work may provide guidance for the design of high-efficiency electrocatalysts and thereby accelerate the industrialization process of biomass utilization.

Abstract:Renewable biomass, with its abundant resources, provides a viable solution to address the energy crisis and mitigate environmental pollution. Furan compounds, including 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural (FF), serve as versatile platform molecules derived from the degradation of lignocellulosic cellulose, offering a crucial pathway for the conversion of renewable biomass. The electrocatalytic conversion of furan compounds using renewable electricity represents an enticing approach for transforming them into value-added chemicals. However, the complex chemistry of furan compounds leads to low selectivity of the target product, and the lower current density and faraday efficiency make it difficult to achieve molded applications. Therefore, it is crucial to gain a better understanding of the mechanism and conditions of the reaction, enhance reaction activity and selectivity, and indicate the direction for industrial applications. Herein, we provide a comprehensive review of the recent advancements in the electrocatalytic of HMF and FF, focusing on mechanisms and pathways, catalysts, and factors affecting like electrolyte pH, potential, and substrate concentration. Furthermore, challenges and future application prospects are discussed. This review aims to equip researchers with a fundamental understanding of the electrochemical dehydrogenation, hydrogenation, and hydrolysis reactions involving furan compounds. Such insights are expected to accelerate the development of cost-effective electrochemical conversion processes for biomass derivatives and their scalability in large-scale applications.

Promoting Electrocatalytic Hydrogenation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Using Buffer Electrolytes As Proton-Donating Motifs: Theoretical Predictions and Experimental Validations

Abstract:Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) represents a promising alternative to conventional hydrogenation tech-niques with high-pressure H2 as a reductant. The proton-donating motif is an important factor governing the reaction efficiency but is usually overlooked in the ECH process. Herein, on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) predictions and experimental validations, we demonstrate that proton-buffer salts such as phosphate, carbonate and borate can greatly promote ECH efficiency. The DFT results predict that the buffer species can outperform water in donating protons for *C--O hydrogenation into *C-OH via the Langmuir-Hinshelwood or proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism, thus promoting the hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds. The experimental results demonstrate that with the buffer-promoting effects, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be effectively converted at an efficiency of 96 % into the value-added 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (DHMF) with a yield of 80 % over cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanoarray catalysts under near-neutral buffer electrolyte. In situ Raman analysis and kinetic isotope experimental results reveal that the real mechanism is a combined Langmuir-Hinshelwood and PCET process. Such a buffer-promoting strategy also exhibits wide applicability in ECH of various other carbonyl compounds with different electrode catalysts. This work may provide a deep under-standing of the ECH process and open up new opportunities to design effective systems for the conversion of HMF into value-added products.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic upgrading of biomass-derived platform molecules has emerged as a sustainable and environmentally benign route to produce high-value chemicals. The main challenge lies in developing efficient catalysts for the selective activation of designated chemical bonds in the presence of various reducible groups. This work demonstrated a high-efficiency electrochemical conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF), an important industrial synthetic reagent. A highly porous Cu-based catalyst was developed that achieved nearly 100% BHMF selectivity and long-term stability. Through comprehensive operando and ex-situ structural characterizations, an electrochemically generated catalyst with abundant Cu/Cu2O interfaces was identified as a catalytically active phase for HMF conversion. Deuterated BHMF, with the potential to produce deuterated drugs, was also synthesized using D2O as the deuterium source. Density functional theory calculations show that the Cu/Cu2O interface structure exhibits relatively low energy barriers for the hydrogenation of HMF to BHMF. This work provides insights into the origin of electrocatalytic hydrogenation activity and highlights the promising potential of the electrocatalytic synthesis of high-value chemicals.

Abstract:With the growing shortage of fossil energy and the increasing of concerns over global climate changes and environmental problems have driven the development of alternative energy sources. Recently, great interest has been oriented towards the development of sustainable resources, especially the utilization of lignocellulosic biomass, a renewable and the most abundant source of biomass originating from plant photosynthesis in nature. Catalytic conversion of renewable cellulosic biomass can produce a series of compounds such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) which are important platform compounds and ideal renewable alternative to fossil fuels. To obtain the renowned bio-based platform molecules, various catalysts and reaction systems have been used in the past decade years. To fully understand current biomass to HMF and DMF development, it is necessary to have an overview and comparison of different homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. The reaction systems also exhibit a remarkable impact on the yield and distribution of products with different catalysts. General trends and future research directions of using biomass for HMF, DMF production are also discussed systematically.

Abstract:<p>Conversion of biomass-derived sources into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a value-added platform chemical, has attracted great research interest motivated by the raising economic and environmental incentives. This review assesses the recent advance on the catalytic system of HMF production, with a main focus on the function of emerging catalysts, solvent system, and advanced reactor. A general overview of HMF production, the correlation between the catalyst physicochemical properties, with a special attention on the acidity property, and the catalytic activity under various reaction parameters, such as solvent or reactor have been summarized and compared. Besides, the reaction mechanism of HMF synthesis was discussed in details, which is helpful for designing novel catalyst with better catalytic activity and improving the stability. Research efforts to clarify the interactions among co-catalysts/co-solvents and between catalysts and solvents have been also classified. Future efforts on developing a synergistic catalytic system for biomass valorization has been pointed out.</p>

Abstract:<p>Biomass is the sole renewable organic carbon resource in nature. Conversion of Biomass can produce a series of platform molecules. As an essential multi-purpose bioderived furanic platform compound, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be effectively transformed into a variety of value-added derivatives due to its rich chemistry and potential availability, which is an ideal renewable alternative to fossil fuels. This review highlights recent advances in the development of efficient catalytic systems for the conversion of HMF, especially heterogeneous catalysts. Heterogeneous catalysts have advantages in facile separation and recovery, tunable performance by adjusting catalyst structures. Simultaneously, we mainly focus on the application of downstream products in material monomers, pharmaceutical intermediates, and fuels. Furthermore, a few potential research trends are also proposed, in order to provide some useful ideas for the further exploration of the utilization and conversion of HMF in a much simple, efficient, and economical way.</p>

Abstract:Electrocatalytic conversion of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to value-added 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is of great significance for sustainable chemical production. The key challenge is to establish an electrocatalytic system with a wide potential window, which can selectively oxidize HMF to FDCA without causing water oxidation. In this study, Cu foam decorated with Cu(OH)2 (CF-Cu(OH)2) was successfully fabricated as an efficient catalyst, and CuOOH active species generated by electrochemistry were demonstrated as the main catalytic sites for HMF oxidation. As a result, the current density of CF-Cu(OH)2 reached up to 198.2 mA/cm2 (100 mM HMF, 1.0 M KOH, 0.8 V vs Ag/AgCl), and a high faradic efficiency close to 100% for FDCA production (yield: 98.7%) was realized. Moreover, we reveal the mechanism for the electro-oxidation of HMF to FDCA and further provide an insight into the oxidation pathway for HMF. A paired electrochemical system exhibits superior catalytic performance of synergetic reactions (HMF oxidation and 4-NP reduction). Therefore, this work proposes a strategy to simultaneously produce two types of value-added chemicals at both electrodes, which can be applied in other electrocatalytic systems for the green synthesis of organic compounds.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction reaction (HMFRR) of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has emerged as a promising avenue for the utilization and refinement of the biomass‐derived platform molecule HMF into high‐value chemicals, addressing energy sustainability challenges. Transition metal electrocatalysts (TMCs) have recently garnered attention as promising candidates for catalyzing HMFRR, capitalizing on the presence of vacant d orbitals and unpaired d electrons. TMCs play a pivotal role in facilitating the generation of intermediates through interactions with HMF, thereby lowering the activation energy of intricate reactions and significantly augmenting the catalytic reaction rate. In the absence of comprehensive and guiding reviews in this domain, this paper aims to comprehensively summarize the key advancements in the design of transition metal catalysts for HMFRR. It elucidates the mechanisms and pH dependency of various products generated during the electrochemical reduction of HMF, with a specific emphasis on the bond‐cleavage angle. Additionally, it offers a detailed introduction to typical in‐situ characterization techniques. Finally, the review explores engineering strategies and principles to enhance HMFRR activity using TMCs, particularly focusing on multiphase interface control, crystal face control, and defect engineering control. This review introduces novel concepts to guide the design of HMFRR electrocatalysts, especially TMCs, thus promoting advancements in biomass conversion.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a class of valuable biomass-based platform compounds. The creation of FDCA involves the catalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). As a novel catalytic method, electrocatalysis has been utilized in the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR). Common noble metal catalysts show catalytic activity, which is limited by price and reaction conditions. Non-noble metal catalyst is known for its environmental friendliness, affordability and high efficiency. The development of energy efficient non-noble metal catalysts plays a crucial role in enhancing the HMFOR process. It can greatly upgrade the demand of industrial production, and has important research significance for electrocatalytic oxidation of HMF. In this paper, the reaction mechanism of HMF undergoes electrocatalytic oxidation to produce FDCA are elaborately summarized. There are two reaction pathways and two oxidation mechanisms of HMFOR discussed deeply. In addition, the speculation on the response of the electrode potential to HMFOR is presented in this paper. The main non-noble metal electrocatalysts currently used are classified and summarized by targeting metal element species. Finally, the paper focus on the mechanistic effects of non-noble metal catalysts in the reaction, and provide the present prospects and challenges in the electrocatalytic oxidation reaction of HMF.
