Abstract:In this work, we report the formation of a novel, aqueous-based thermo-responsive, supramolecular gelling system prepared by a convenient and efficient self-assembly of a long-chain amino-amide and citric acid. To determine the viscosity behavior and to gain insights into the gelation mechanism, a complementary combination of techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and sinusoidal oscillatory tests, were used. The supramolecular gelator exhibited remarkably reversible sol-gel transitions induced by temperature at 76 °C. At a concentration of 5 wt%, the zero-frequency viscosity of the supramolecular system increased by about four orders of magnitude (from 4.2 to 12 563 Pa s) by changing the temperature from 23 °C to 76 °C. The viscous nature of the supramolecular gel could be preserved up to 90 °C. The synergistic combination of the hydrogen bonding between amino and carboxylic acid groups and the electrostatic interactions arising from the protonation of the amino-group and the deprotonation of carboxylic acid groups enhanced at higher temperatures is presumably responsible for the thermo-responsive behavior. We anticipate that these supramolecular gelators can be beneficial in various applications such as hydrogel scaffolds for regenerative medicine, personal care products and cosmetics, and enhanced oil recovery as viscosity modifiers.
Facile fabrication of self-shrinkable AIE supramolecular gels based on benzophenone salicylaldehyde hydrazine derivatives

Abstract:The study of shrinkage behavior in supramolecular soft materialsviathe variation of shape and volume can contribute to a better understanding of and the mimicking of motions that occur in diverse organisms. The fabrication of self-shrinkable supramolecular gels is of great significance in actively moving systems but is still a big challenge. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has been an extremely hot topic and is believed to have significantly stimulated the development of luminescent supramolecular materials. Its realization in self-shrinkable materials can both provoke academic interest and widen the number of innovative applications for actively moving systems. Herein, we proposed a novel molecular design strategy to give self-shrinkable AIE supramolecular gelsviathe use of three benzophenone salicylaldehyde hydrazine derivatives substituted with different length alkyl chains. These gelator molecules prefer to adopt a twisted conformation in the monomolecular and assembled state which is beneficial to their AIE behaviors. The gels of these molecules exhibit distinct phase behaviors where those with longer alkyl chains result in the self-shrinkage of the gel. We consider that this is due to the enhancement of the mobility of the packing layers and thus a shorter inter-layer distance that leads to tighter stacking. The self-shrinkage process was concomitant with a variation in the morphology from a macroporous honeycomb structure to a more aligned and regular nanofibrous structure with an accompanying emission enhancement.

Abstract:This paper reports a large volume change in a cholesterol based molecular gel in the presence of multi-amine as the gelling solvents dissociated from the gel in a dynamic manner. The release capability can be controlled by the ratio of multi-amine. The shrinkage capability can be restored and recycled by a gel-sol transformation. The mechanism of the shrinkage was followed by SEM, confocal laser scanning microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies. A structural evolution from lamellar vesicles to a more compact hexagonal structure driven by competitive intermolecular hydrogen bonds was proved to dominate the process of the solvent release. Moreover, the process can be stopped by addition of organic acid such as trifluoroacetic acid, which favors the application of this kind of material for molecular delivery systems.
Molecular Structure and Properties of Click Hydrogels with Controlled Dangling End Defect

Abstract:In this study, controlled amount of dangling ends is introduced to the two series of poly(ethylene glycol)-based hydrogel networks with three and four crosslinking functionality by using click chemistry. The structure of the gels with regulated defect percentage is confirmed by comparing the results of low-field NMR characterization and Monte Carlo simulation. The mechanical properties of these gels were characterized by tensile stress-strain behaviors of the gels, and the results are analyzed by Gent model and Mooney-Rivlin model. The shear modulus of the swollen gels is found to be dependent on the functionality of the network, and decreases with the defect percentage. Furthermore, the value of shear modulus well obeys the Phantom model for all the gels with varied percentage of the defects. The maximum extension ratio, obtained from the fitting of Gent model, is also found to be dependent on the functionality of the network, and does not change with the defect percentage, except at very high defect percentage. The value of the maximum extension ratio is between that predicted from Phantom model and the Affine model. This indicates that at the large deformation, the fluctuation of the crosslinking points is suppressed for some extend but still exists. Polymer volume fractions at various defect percentages obtained from prediction of Flory-Rehner model are found to be in well agreement with the swelling experiment. All these results indicate that click chemistry is a powerful method to regulate the network structure and mechanical properties of the gels. (C) 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Degradable and thermosensitive microgels were successfully prepared via simultaneous quaternization and siloxane condensation during surfactant-free emulsion polymerization, with N-vinylcaprolactam as the main monomer and 1-vinylimidazole (VIM) as the comonomer, in the presence of (3-bromopropyl)trimethoxysilane (BPTMOS). The formation mechanism of cross-linking network was attributed to the hydrolysis and condensation of the methoxysilyl groups of BPTMOS and the quaternization of imidazole moiety of VIM by the bromine group of BPTMOS, leading to the microgels. The microgels were spherical in shape with a narrow size distribution, stable in an acidic buffer solution, but degradable in neutral and alkaline solutions. The presence of quaternized imidazolium in the same chain segment of Si-O-Si cross-linking points promoted the decomposition of Si-O-Si bonds and hence the degradation of the microgels. The obtained microgels could load and release the model drug, doxorubicin. The size, thermosensitivity, stability, degradation rate, and drug release behavior of the resultant microgels could be tuned by controlling the cross-linking degree, chemical composition, and degradation medium.

Abstract:A significant drawback of gels formed from low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) is their typically poor mechanical stability due to the weak non-covalent interactions responsible for forming the gel. Here, we present a rare example of bicomponent gels prepared from LMWGs that show excellent mechanical stability even at <0.7 wt.% gelator loading. The gels can be moulded into any desired shape, without creep deformation. Dynamic diffusion of a guest, like β-carotene, from a spiked gel into its submerged solvent environment is explored through UV–vis spectrophotometry and NMR techniques, showing that the integrity of the gel network remains in the presence of the guest.

Abstract:Photoresponsive C-3-symmetrical trisurea self-assembling building blocks containing three azobenzene groups (LC10 and LC4) at the rim were designed and synthesized. By introducing a trisamide gelator (G18), which can self-aggregate through hydrogen bonds of acylamino moieties to form a fibrous network, the mixture of LC10 (or LC4) and G18 forms an organogel with coral-like supramolecular structure from 1,4-dioxane. The cooperation of hydrogen bonding and the hydrophobic diversity between these components are the main contributions to the specific superstructure. The two-component gel exhibits reversible photoisomerization from trans to cis transition without breakage of the gel state.

Abstract:Even without obvious sticky sites, novel supramolecular thixotropic metallohydrogels consisting of rare metal-organic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been readily accessible from simple structured pincer-type terpyridine Cu(II) complexes at the gelator concentration as low as 0.25 wt %. The obtained soft materials have been fully characterized by using a combination of experimental techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS), and theology measurements. Based on these studies, hypothesized molecular assembly mechanisms for distinctly different morphologies observed in different solvents were proposed. Besides general heating-cooling gel preparation procedures, surprisingly, the metallohydrogel was formed by simply stirring the mixture of pincer ligand and Cu salts in water directly, further indicating thixotropic property and self-healing ability of the resulting metallohydrogel under external stress. This stirring approach is highly anion and phase selective with various potential applications. Furthermore, the infrequent observation of the crystal growth from metallogels in situ readily reavealed the self-assembly mechanism that g-stacking and metal-metal interactions along with hydrogen-bonding interactions between gelator and guest molecules are responsible for the gel formation, which is further confirmed by the control gel collapse experiment via external ligand substitution. All these results indicated that pincer organometallic complexes not only can function as a new type of hydrogelators but also are readily to fabricate useful thixotropic materials with various applicability based on their morphologies and assembly mechanism studies.

Abstract:Two isomeric building units, 4-oxo-4-(2-pyridinylamino) butanoic acid (defined as G1) and 4-oxo-4-(3-pyridinylamino) butanoic acid (defined as G2) formed fiber- and tree-like crystals in aqueous solutions, respectively. The crystal formation process of G1 was suggested based on the layered cross section of an individual crystal and the single crystal structure. Through cooling the aqueous solutions of their mixtures under G1/G2 molar ratios ranged from 7/1 to 1/3, a series of supramolecular hydrogels were formed based on hydrogen bonds as the main driving force. As decreasing G1/G2 ratios, the first observed aggregates in solution changed from fiber to particle form, while the gelating time became longer and longer. At the collapsing temperature, the gels formed at G1/G2 ratio ⩾3/1 kept the original gel shape but released water, while at G1/G2 ratio ⩽2/1 they broke into pieces without releasing water. The “dropping ball” experiment indicated that the highest gel-to-sol dissociation temperature (Tgel) is obtained at G1/G2 ratio of 2/1. As measured by UV–vis spectroscopy, the two building units distributed uniformly within the gel formed at G1/G2 ratio of 1/1, indicating they assembled together in forming hydrogel. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) analysis of the dried samples indicated that the backbone shape changed from fiber to sheet and the content of free carboxyl groups increased with decreasing G1/G2 ratios, therefore resulting in hydrogels with different stability. The simple gelator structures and the possibility in controlling gel structure and stability make the hydrogels suitable for various uses.

Abstract:A novel low weight molecular gelator was designed and synthesized which can gelate several polar solvents with different morphologies. It is interesting that it exchanges morphology between a three-dimensional gel network and vesicles in ethanol via treatment with ultrasound and a heating-cooling process, through supramolecular self-assembly in a certain concentration range. The mechanism of the self-assembly process was investigated by IR, X-ray diffraction and rheological experiments. The results show that the gelator molecules self-assemble in a parallel manner into a lamella structure and the lamellas further aggregate into a gel network or vesicles at room temperature with or without the ultrasonic stimulation.

Abstract:novel tripodal gelator, functionalized by three urea and three azobenzene moieties grafted with three long alkyl chains, was designed and synthesized. The morphologies and surface properties of the xerogels prepared from this gelator strongly depend on the polarity of the gelling solvent. Cabbage-like topography and superhydrophobicity were observed in the xerogel formed from a low polar aromatic solvent such as xylene. The wettability of a xerogel could be turned from hydrophobicity to hydrophilicity by applying a sol-gel process with different solvents. Spectral and structural analysis of the xerogels revealed a basic bilayer arrangement of molecules with polarity changing on going from the inner hydrophilic regions toward the outer region ( edge) of the layer. The cooperation and relative competition of hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions, and azobenzene-azobenzene interactions are suggested to be the main contribution for the bilayer structure self-assembly. This two-dimensional self-assembly and the growth of nanostructures are remarkable in view of the usual fibrous aggregates given by organogels.
Photomodulated Morphologies in Halogen Bond-Driven Assembly during Gel-Sol Transition

Abstract:Photoresponsive supramolecular gels with various applications are being constantly pursued; however, achieving well-defined morphology changes of gels via light irradiation remains a formidable challenge. In this study, a gel is prepared through halogen bond between azopyridine-containing Azopy-C10 and 1,4-tetrafluorodiiodobenzene. The gel exhibits gel-sol transition due to trans-cis isomerization of the azopyridine moiety upon UV irradiation. During this transition, the morphologies vary from flake to fluffy bobble-like and finally to peony-like with increasing exposure time, which is difficult to achieve in traditional assembly systems. The microstructure change is attributed to the variations of cis-isomer content and halogen-bonding strength. The supramolecular gel provides a novel method to achieve photomodulated morphologies and broadens the applications of such kind of materials, ranging from information storage to high-tech anticounterfeit.

Abstract:A cross-linked supramolecular polymer network gel is designed and prepared, which shows reversible gel-sol transitions induced by changes in pH, temperature, cation concentration, and metal co-ordination. The gel pore size is controlled by the amount of cross-linker added to the system, and the material can be molded into shape-persistent, free-standing objects with elastic behavior. These features are all due to the dynamically reversible host-guest complexation and good mechanical properties of the cross-linked polymer network. No single organogel has previously been reported to possess all of these features, making this supramolecular gel an unprecedentedly intelligent soft material.
Fine-Tuning of Molecular Structures to Generate Carbohydrate Based Super Gelators and Their Applications for Drug Delivery and Dye Absorption

Abstract:Carbohydrate-based low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) exhibit many desirable properties making them useful in various fields including applications as drug delivery carriers. In order to further understand the structural connection to gelation properties, especially the influence of halide substitutions, we have designed and synthesized a series of para-chlorobenzylidene acetal protected D-glucosamine amide derivatives. Fifteen different amides were synthesized, and their self-assembling properties were assessed in multiple organic solvents, as well as mixtures of organic solvents with water. All derivatives were found to be gelators for at least one solvent and majority formed gels in multiple solvents at concentrations lower than 2 wt%. A few derivatives rendered remarkably stable gels in aqueous solutions at concentrations below 0.1 wt%. The benzamide 13 formed gels in water and in EtOH/H2O (v/v 1:2) at 0.36 mg/mL. The gels were characterized using optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy, and the self-assembly mechanism was probed using variable temperature 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Gel extrusion studies using H2O/DMSO gels successfully printed lines of gels on glass slides, which retained viscoelasticity based on rheology. Gels formed by the benzamide 13 were used for encapsulation and the controlled release of chloramphenicol and naproxen, as well as for dye removal for toluidine blue aqueous solutions.

Abstract:A novel ionic responsive Schiff base organic gelator was successfully designed and synthesized. The solvent selection experiment showed that the gelator showed good thermoreversible gelator behavior in aniline, valerate alcohol and isopropyl alcohol. FT-IR studies have shown that C=O and N–H of molecules participate in the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds, thus promoting the formation of gelator states. The XRD and SEM results show that the molecules self-assemble in the dry gelator to form the entangled network structure. In addition, the fluorescence spectrum test of gelling agent G showed that gelling agent G could specifically recognize Cu 2+ . Gelator G has good selectivity, low detection limit (2.92 × 10 –8 M) and high sensitivity, which can be applied to the detection of Cu 2+ in biology, environment and other fields. The results show that gelator G has broad application prospects in materials science, chemistry, biomedicine and other fields. It also confirms that benzopyran-derived hydrazone Schiff base compounds have far-reaching research significance.

Abstract:Here we report a photosensitive supramolecular hydrogel formed by MeO-Tet-GA.MeO-Tet-GA can selfassemble to form supramolecular hydrogel in neutral buffer.The formed hydrogel has good mechanical properties, and the dynamic energy storage modulus G′ is above 500 Pa.Based on the intermolecular photo-click reaction between biaryltetrazole and the terminal alkene, we could further modify the hydrogel with hydrophilic sodium 4vinylbenzenesulfonate to disturb the hydrogel and induce the degradation of hydrogel.We also tried to use this supramolecular hydrogel for three-dimensional culture of mouse breast cancer 4T1 cells.We found that MeO-Tet-GA has excellent biocompatibility and did not cause significant 4T1 cell death after three days of culture.Overall, this work demonstrates that supramolecular hydrogel formed by MeO-Tet-GA holds great promise in long-term three-dimensional cell culture and in studying cell behaviors through photo-modulation of cell microenvironment.

Abstract:4-(4'-Ethoxyphenyl)phenyl-beta-O-D-glucoside (1) was synthesized. A perfect crystal of I was obtained from all acetonitrile solution. In a mixture of water/1,4-dioxane (8/2, v/v), a gel formed at first and then collapsed into a needlelike crystal. The crystal and the gel were characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-vis absorption, circular dichroism, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. It was found that the crystal formed from the gel had the same diffraction pattern Lis that of the single crystal from the acetonitrile solution, Suggesting identical molecular packing. In a monoclinic cell containing two molecules, molecules took a "T" arrangement with an antiparallel direction. In contrast, the diffraction pattern of xerogel from water/1,4-dioxane (8/2, v/v) displayed a d-spacing ratio of 1:1/2:1/3 (2.39, 1.18, and 0.78 nm), indicating an interdigitated bilayer structure. A molecular packing model from gel to crystal where molecular sheets would insert into each other with a glide movement was suggested, On the basis of the understanding of the deformation mechanism, ail additive was introduced to obtain a stable gel.
