Abstract:This paper reports a large volume change in a cholesterol based molecular gel in the presence of multi-amine as the gelling solvents dissociated from the gel in a dynamic manner. The release capability can be controlled by the ratio of multi-amine. The shrinkage capability can be restored and recycled by a gel-sol transformation. The mechanism of the shrinkage was followed by SEM, confocal laser scanning microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies. A structural evolution from lamellar vesicles to a more compact hexagonal structure driven by competitive intermolecular hydrogen bonds was proved to dominate the process of the solvent release. Moreover, the process can be stopped by addition of organic acid such as trifluoroacetic acid, which favors the application of this kind of material for molecular delivery systems.

Abstract:A semicrystalline polymer actuator, which is responsive to solvent vapor with fast and large scale locomotion, is described. The thermoset semicrystalline polymer can be easily synthesized from crystallizable polyester segment poly (e-caprolactone) and isophorone diisocyanate trimer. Organic solvent vapor is used to induce the reversible swelling-crystallization conversion of the crystallizable polyester segment, resulting in its expansion/shrinkage. The contraction of the polymer actuator (1 mm thick) needs only approximate to 4 s in room temperature. When exposed to air the polymer actuator can exhibit a fast self-oscillation. Then, a soft crawler based on this polymer is demonstrated. Driven by organic solvent it walks rapidly and steadily. The microscope images show the fast swelling-crystallization conversion that gives rise to reversible shape changes of the polymer.

Abstract:The study of shrinkage behavior in supramolecular soft materialsviathe variation of shape and volume can contribute to a better understanding of and the mimicking of motions that occur in diverse organisms. The fabrication of self-shrinkable supramolecular gels is of great significance in actively moving systems but is still a big challenge. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has been an extremely hot topic and is believed to have significantly stimulated the development of luminescent supramolecular materials. Its realization in self-shrinkable materials can both provoke academic interest and widen the number of innovative applications for actively moving systems. Herein, we proposed a novel molecular design strategy to give self-shrinkable AIE supramolecular gelsviathe use of three benzophenone salicylaldehyde hydrazine derivatives substituted with different length alkyl chains. These gelator molecules prefer to adopt a twisted conformation in the monomolecular and assembled state which is beneficial to their AIE behaviors. The gels of these molecules exhibit distinct phase behaviors where those with longer alkyl chains result in the self-shrinkage of the gel. We consider that this is due to the enhancement of the mobility of the packing layers and thus a shorter inter-layer distance that leads to tighter stacking. The self-shrinkage process was concomitant with a variation in the morphology from a macroporous honeycomb structure to a more aligned and regular nanofibrous structure with an accompanying emission enhancement.

Abstract:Organogels that lock organic solvents within a polymer network shows promising applications in ice-phobicity, anti-biofouling, conserving cultural heritage etc. However, the synthesis of organogels by versatile and costeffective methods still remain challenging. Here, we introduce a novel and economical approach to organogel preparation via crystallization-induced polymer precipitation, which involves the straightforward blending of carbonyl contained polymer, nano Ca(OH)2, and excess ethyl acetate (EA). During the formation, nano Ca(OH)2 reacts with EA to produce ethanol and calcium acetate, in which Ca2+ ionically bonds with carbonyl of polymer. Due to the low solubility in EA and ethanol, calcium acetate initiates crystallization. The interaction between Ca (CH3COO)2 and polymer induces the separation of polymer from the solvent, thereby forming a network that locks the surplus EA and ethanol. More importantly, the organogel is capable not only of encapsulating 12 organic solvents within its precursor but also of effectively removing various aged polymeric coatings from wall paintings without leaving residues. This innovative organogel system marks a significant forward in the realm of organogel with applications in conservation and surface engineering.

Abstract:A novel low molecular weight organogelator (LMOG) containing an azobenzene group has been designed and synthesized. Stable gels could be formed in various organic solvents. UV–Vis spectroscopy indicated that the sol-gel transition of the organogels could be reversibly tuned by UV/visible light irradiations. Importantly, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the characteristic gelation morphologies would vary from solvents of different polarities. FT-IR, XRD and rheological measurements demonstrated that the different nanostructures in polar and non-polar solvents might result from the differences in the intermolecular hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking driving forces as well as the different stacking models for the formation of the gels. Moreover, as an efficient phase-selective gelator, this photo-switchable gel could perform as an efficient absorbent and water cleaner to remove pollutants (e.g. rhodamine B).

Abstract:A millimeter-scale periodic structure is created in a polyelectrolyte hydrogel by the rapid-heterogeneous swelling process, and is frozen by the polyion complexation of the polyelectrolyte network with the oppositely charged, semi-rigid polyelectrolyte. The hydrogel is synthesized from a cationic monomer, N-[3-(N,N-dimethylamino)propyl] acrylamide methyl chloride quaternary (DMAPAA-Q), in the presence of a small amount of the oppositely charged poly(2,2'-disulfonyl-4,4'-benzidine terephthalamide) (PBDT) that has a semi-rigid nature. During the swelling process, surface creasing due to the large mismatching of swelling degree between the surface layer and the inner one of the poly DMAPAA-Q (PDMAPAA-Q) gel occurs, which induces highly oriented semi-rigid PBDT molecules along the tensile direction of the crease pattern. To accompany the evolution of surface creasing, a lattice-like periodic birefringence pattern is formed, which is frozen permanently by the strong polyion complex formation, even after the surface instability pattern of the gel disappears completely throughout the dynamic coalescence. In this work we rationally clarified that formation of such a long-range ordered non-equilibrium structure in the polyelectrolyte hydrogel by the rapid-heterogeneous swelling process requires the following three indispensable conditions: (i) swelling-induced surface creasing; (ii) polyion complex formation; and (iii) a semi-rigid or rigid dopant. This sort of non-equilibrium structure formation mechanism may help understand how biomacromolecules that are rigid polyelectrolytes, such as deoxyribonucleic acid, microtubules and actin filaments, form rich architectures during the growth of biological organs.

Abstract:Encoding molecular ordering during liquid crystalline network (LCN) formation endows preprogrammed but fixed shape morphing in response to external stimuli. The incorporation of dynamic covalent bonds enables shape reprogramming but also permanently alters the network structures. Here, an entropic approach that can program complex shapes via directed solvent evaporation from an isotropic LCN organogel is discoursed. Different shapes can be erased and reprogrammed from the same LCN on demand depending on the modes of deformation of the organogel during solvent evaporation. The ability to decouple network synthesis and molecular alignment relaxes the requirements to LCN chemistry and alignment methods, allowing for the realization of a variety of origami/kirigami structures and 4D shape morphing of LCNs printed from the digital light processing technique with unattainable spatial and temporal controls.

Synthesis and Gelation Behavior of a Novel Bithiazole Based Low-Molecular-Mass Organic Gelator

Abstract:A novel bithiazole based low-molecular-mass organic gelator was synthesized from 2,2'-diamino-bithiazole through condensation reaction with cholesteryl chloroformate.The structure and purity of the prepared organogelator product were identified by the infrared spectra (FT-IR),the nuclear magnetic resonance spectra for hydrogen (1H-NMR),and the time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF HRMS).The assembly behavior of the prepared organogelator in solution was investigated.The organogelator induces gelation of a wide variety of organic solvents,especially for aromatic solvents.The critical gelation concentration (CGC) of the prepared gelator in toluene is 7 mg·mL-1.The field emission scanning eletron microscope (FE-SEM) images exhibit that the xerogels from toluene and CHCl3 solution contain sheet structure.The curly sheet structures in the xerogel from toluene solution demonstrate that the prepared organogelator has good gelation properties in toluene.The infrared spectra (FT-IR) and UV-vis absorption spectra show that the hydrogen bonding between amide group and the π-π stacking interaction between bithiazoles are the main driving forces for the formation of organogels.

Abstract:Solvent-triggered isometric stress generation of an ultrathin and tough triple-network (TN) hydrogel was systematically studied as functions of the pre-strain and ethanol/water mixture solvent. The obtained results along with the solvent-induced changes in the volume and modulus of the hydrogel were further analyzed with emphasis on clarifying the stress generation mechanism of the TN gel. Ca2+-triggered stress generation of the gel was also preliminarily explored. High stress generation of 0.4 MPa was obtained within tens of seconds at the low pre-strain of 25% by alternating water and ethanol. Both negative and positive stress generation of the gel were achieved just by changing the composition of the ethanol/water mixture solvent. Mechanism analysis indicates that, modulus change of the gel is the dominant reason for their solvent-triggered high and fast stress generation. In the case of the Ca2+-triggered stress generation of the gel, it is also attributed to the modulus change induced by the physical cross-linking of Ca2+ between the negatively charged first network chains of the TN hydrogel.
Solvent-Resistant Adhesive Gel with Thermal Post-Tunability

Abstract:Adhesives have received extensive attention in flexible bioelectronics, wearable electronic medical devices, and biofuel cells. However, it is a challenge to achieve late regulation of performance once polymer-based gels are formed. Here, a double-network organogel composed of a hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer network and a polyamide acid network was successfully prepared. In diverse liquid environments (including isopropyl alcohol, glycerol, epichlorohydrin, n-propanol, dichloromethane, triethanolamine, ethanol absolute, hydrogen peroxide, and ethyl acetate), the organogel adhesive demonstrated remarkable properties. It exhibits a strong tensile strength of 200 kPa, a high fracture strain reaching 560%, and an impressive adhesion strength of 38 kPa. In addition, the organogel demonstrates exceptional adhesive properties toward polytetrafluoroethylene, plastics, metals, rubber, and glass. Note that the organogel could also regulate adhesive and tough performance by thermally triggering a cyclization reaction even after the organogel has been formed. The strategy provides a new idea for designing soft materials with post-tunability.

Abstract:4-(4′-Butoxyphenyl)phenyl-β-O-d-glucoside was synthesized as a low-molecular-mass gelator. It was able to immobilize a variety of aqueous and organic solvents in large amounts through the formation of three-dimensional self-assembled fibrillar networks. The morphologies of the aggregates depended on the nature of solvent where they were formed. Planar ribbons were observed in water, while helical ribbons were dominant in toluene and sheets in CHCl3. The xerogel from water exhibited a lamellar structure with a d-spacing of 2.45 nm as demonstrated by 1D-WAXD, indicating a bilayer structure interdigitated with butoxy tails, whereas the xerogel from CHCl3 or toluene yielded a lamellar structure with a d-spacing of 3.05 nm, implying a bilayer structure interdigitated with glycosyl heads. Increasing the content of 1,4-dioxane in water caused a gradual transformation from planar to twisted ribbons and then tubes.

Abstract:Gel polymers are widely used in different fields due to their unique properties, especially in flexible electronic devices. However, developing multienvironmentally-tolerant (antifreezing, antidrying, and solvent-resistant) gel polymer-based soft electronics is still a significant challenge. Herein, a binary solvent system-based versatile organohydrogel is designed and successfully prepared, which exhibits superior stretchability, favorable self-adhesive properties, prominent temperature tolerance, and excellent solvent-resistant capabilities. Furthermore, the as-assembled organohydrogel-based sensor demonstrates a satisfied sensitivity (GF = 1.8), wide strain range (5-500%), and outstanding human motion detection. Meanwhile, the obtained organohydrogel can also serve as an all-weather sensor for achieving precise and reliable mechanical sensing in a wide temperature range from -50 to 50 °C and diverse liquid media consisting of water, toluene, and carbon tetrachloride. Interestingly, the organohydrogel displays a repeatable transmittance change behavior in water and dimethyl sulfoxide, based on this feature, which could realize the functional applications for recording and erasing information. It is envisioned that these superior performances render the as-prepared organohydrogel suitable to develop future advanced soft electronics with multienvironmental tolerance.

Abstract:Since the work of Tanaka et al.,1, 2 volume phase transitions of polymeric hydrogels has been a topic intensively studied. Pattern formation in a hydrogel associated with this transition is also of interest,3–8 since studies on the underlying pattern formation may elucidate mechanical properties of gels and pattern evolutions in some biological systems. Quasi-hexagonal patterns were found in swelling of an ionized polyacrylamide gel slab by Tanaka et al.3 Afterwards, bubble, bamboo, and tube like patterns were observed in the shrinking of a gel cylinder suddenly immersed into an acetone-rich solution.4 Similar patterns were observed in poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) gel induced by temperature,9 in polyacrylate gel induced by a small molecular agent, dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC)10 and in many other cases. Some complicated phenomena as intermediate states in a sudden volume change have also been reported such as whitening of PNIPAM gel at the early stage of gel shinking.11 In our study, a novel pattern tentatively named “gel helix” was observed during a sudden pH-induced shrinkage of a poly(sodium acrylate/acrylamide) gel cylinder. This process is described qualitatively in this report.

Abstract:The gelation behaviors of binary organogels composed of aminobenzimidazole/benzothiazole derivatives and benzoic acid with single-/multialkyl substituent chain in various organic solvents were designed and investigated. Their gelation behaviors in 20 solvents were tested as new binary organic gelators. This showed that the number and length of alkyl substituent chains and benzimidazole/benzothiazole segment have played a crucial role in the gelation behavior of all gelator mixtures in various organic solvents. More alkyl chains in molecular skeletons in present gelators are favorable for the gelation of organic solvents. The length of alkyl substituent chains has also played an important role in changing the gelation behaviors and assembly states. Morphological studies revealed that the gelator molecules self-assemble into different aggregates from wrinkle, lamella, belt, to fiber with change of solvents. Spectral studies indicated that there existed different H-bond formation and hydrophobic force, depending on benzimidazole/benzothiazole segment and alkyl substituent chains in molecular skeletons. The prepared nanostructured materials have wide perspectives and many potential applications in nanoscience and material fields due to their scientific values. The present work may also give new clues for designing new binary organogelators and soft materials.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive supramolecular organogels are fascinating for their dynamically controllable features, but it is difficult for most versatile linear vinyl polymers to construct suitable cross-linking points in oils or organic solvents. Here, a mesomorphic organogelator was fabricated by self-assembly of one azopyridine-containing polymer and oleic acid for the first time. Particularly, oleic acid acts as not only one important component to construct the mesogenic gelator but also the solvent entrapped in the interstices of the physically cross-linked three-dimensional (3D) network. The resulting organogel shows a macroscopic gel-sol transition upon external triggers of temperature, light, and organic metal ions. Accordingly, holographic gratings were successfully inscribed in the organogel, whose switching behaviors were obtained by manipulation of the three external stimuli. This provides a simple and elegant strategy to construct multiresponsive supramolecular liquid-crystalline polymer organogels with promising applications in optics, data storage, and sensors.
